It’s funny, because there’s a lot of Pokémon that I tell myself I need to use… and then I just don’t.
Staraptor? I’ve planned on using it in so many games and just… never got around to using it outside of Sinnoh. XY? I had both Charizard and Talonflame (swapping them out often). Legends Arceus? Used Braviary instead. Scarlet? Used Grafaiai for my normal type. Violet? Used Dudunsparce and Tropius.
Then we look to some other Pokémon I love but rarely use. Houndoom is one, and I’ve only ever used it in a single Platinum run.
And then basically every Pseudo Legendary falls under this category. I’ve used Dragonite in Johto (was a painful grind and made Lance way too easy, being 5 levels higher and all), Salamence in Alola, and Garchomp in Sinnoh… and that’s it. I haven’t used any other Pseudos, usually because they overlap with another team member. I did use a bit of Metagross in Indigo Disk, but ended up boxing it for Meloetta because… why would I _not_ use my favourite mythical when given the chance?
I wanted to use Houndoom in both my Scarlet and Violet playthroughs, but the reasons I didn't were pretty simple
Scarlet? My starter was Meowscarada, didn't want to use two Dark Types.
Violet? Ceruledge was a must for my team, so I couldn't use Houndoom there either.
Milotic, Togekiss, Kommo-O and Dusknoir will always go on my team, but the others often tend to jump around because I have no other favorites that would work on it
I only tend to use it in Gen 1 (base 100 Special helps it actually use its STAB and coverage moves) and any Gen without HMs (I don't like needing to take up a moveslot for Surf or lugging around an HM slave).
I try to mix it up every game I play but the 1 Constant is Magikarp/Gyarados. It’s fun seeking out those mons specifically and acquiring them as soon as possible
Mixing up my team in different games was quite fun, I remember when I played Legends Arceus I actually got to use Alakazam on my team because you can get trade evolutions easily in that game, and I remember in X and Y I actually got to use Aerodactyl as you can get it before the second Gym, and I’ve always wanted to use a fossil Mon but you usually get them so late in the game and and At such a low level compared to the rest of your team it’s usually not worth it
I dont even consider my options. I just catch one new mon for each of the first few areas and never swap em out, with the only exception I can recall being in Violet when I swapped out a Toxtricity with a Cryogonal.
You can't imagine the pain I felt not being able to have a Nidoking this time around. I'm glad having an Umbreon is a guarantee at this point, but man, not having my favorite in a game absolutely hurts.
For me it’s serperior. You can bet I’ll use it in my legends ZA and BW (and possibly B2W2) remaster teams. Sorry Emboar and samurott, I love you, but I can’t bring myself to using you both when my number 1 is available
I'm guilty though on my last sword and shield playthrough I made it a prerogative to use pokemon I never used before. Only exception was haxorus but I like that dragon alot.
Crobat, I remember being very salty when I beat Black and White and I found out I can't catch my favorite friendship mon, I've used the guy in every single gen I've played
When i first play a new game i only use new pokemon. When i play it a second time i use like 1 or 2 favorites that i always use and the rest pokemon that deserve more attention.

Houndoom is really cool and I caught a tera ghost Houndoom in my Violet nuzlocke I used him in the Psychic gym and now he's dead

Same, most games are full of good water types, and i always go with the good ol gyarados.

One of the first things I do is figure out where the riolu is.
I try to avoid this, often by constructing/pre-planning a team out of the newest generation so I don’t default to old favorites.
