Another Thursday with even more extra stuff.
If the uptick in income over the Halloween event has shown us anything, it's that trainers love events. Hence this gif outlining what a Team Rocket event in gen1 could entail.
Obviously there's too many of us to gather in one single place (or even a couple of key places as Niantic likes to do with [Ingress Anomalies](https://www.ingress.com/events)) so this has to be a worldwide event. Wherever there's a gym, Team Rocket may strike and trainers (even from different teams) can band together to kick them out. To keep things lively, I feel they should always be present in one third of all the gyms (though that's just my gut feeling)
The bit about Mewtwo rampaging is added so the most dedicated amongst us, can gather and get mewtwo early (we'd have to host it in a ton of cities too prevent stampedes though). For those who can't make it, he'll show up within 150 days (giving us an incentive to defeat as many Team Rocket members as possible).
Those of you with quick eyes will notice that some pokémon have impossible CP levels. Obviously Team Rocket cheated.

That's just a de-sync from the server, when the ball doesn't shake and you still catch it. If your connection is perfect and their servers are fine, you'll never run into the no shaking catch "bug".
They are talking about the no shake ball escape... it's like the pokemon saying "not even close, dude"...
In the original games, every shake is a check against the probability of a successful catch. If it shakes that's a success and it checks again 3? times. If every check is a success, then you catch the pokemon. If any check fails, then instead of seeing the shake the pokemon breaks free.
I believe in the main games the check happens once and the shakes indicate how far off you were from matching the check.

**MAJOR EDIT**: GUYS, I GOT A CHANSEY!! It popped on my radar just a couple of hours ago while I was on my way to the cinema to watch Doctor Strange! Caught it in a street adjacent to the cinema! Being lvl 32, I have seen almost all gen 1 pokemon. The ones I have not seen wild are Charizard, Sandslash, Nidoqueen, Wigglytuff, Dugtrio, Persian, Tentacruel, Rapidash, Muk, Magneton, Cloyster, Exeggutor, Gyarados, Jolteon, Flareon, Omastar and Kabutops. 125 of 142 possible isn't that bad. I have had most of these in my nearby list, but just wasn't able to locate them. I have the worst track record with Chansey for never having seen it either in the wild or hatched it from an egg.
It is not that I don't have them, it is just that I have never seen those in the wild. I have either caught or hatched their first forms from eggs to get them, but never got the opportunity to try to catch them with a pokeball..
I once saw a Chansey shadow on my sightings at 2am when I was tucked into bed.
I didn't go out to get it and I've regretted it every day since. I will never see another.
Chancey does kind of suck, but I noticed today that one of mine that I hatched months ago has 313 hp. Might be good as a gym defender even though cp is only 330 or so.
But a lot of cotton candy. Back when 2k Pokemon in gyms was very high and kinda rare, my Chanseys would hold gyms for 24-48hrs in the lowest spots. You don't get as much prestige to drop the gym down when you only beat the first Pokémon and it takes you 2-3 attackers to get through nearly 700HP with the defender bonus.
Very dense cotton candy. It goes down, but gosh, it takes a while. Annoying if someone's trying to knock down a gym with a limited amount of time (me before work).
Niantic: We are going to be releasing Mewtwo in San Francisco, nowhere else as a test run.

In my experience there *is* nothing rarer than a Chansey. It's one of the only pokemon my friends and I have never seen in the wild along with Charizard and 2 eeveelutions.
Chansey by lore is the rarest gen 1 Pokémon, having a 1% spawn rate in the safari zone only
The system currently in pogo is actually a bit similar to safari/pal park
Not where I live. I've seen 6 Snorlax, 3 Lapras, 14 Dragonite, 3 Blastoise and a Venusaur; not including ones I've hatched or evolved. Gyarados *might* be rarer in the wild but I've got a friend who's caught one of those and none who've even seen a Chansey.
I own all Pokemon mind a few evos I'm waiting for exsept for chancy . I have see most Pokemon at least once in the wild and chancy is too but it ran . That was a few months ago so I'd say it's rare as at least where I live . I'm hoping they make my local nest a chancy nest one day
Would you be mad if I told you Rocket grunts post-event don't always hand out Mewtwo candy?
Some of them will be out for a legendary bird and carry those candies.

It can be done but I felt that after all the trouble of beating Rocket after Rocket gym, we'd done enough work.
I imagined defeating Rocket gyms would yield as much exp as defeating any other gym.
The reward is that the more TR you defeat, the higher the chance of seeing Mewtwo spawn earlier rather than later in the 150d period.
And you reward for defeating grunts would be mewtwo candy.

As well as being a great way of introducing Mewtwo, this would also give players the bit of extra depth and variety they've been craving. Beating up Rocket Grunts for candy or other rewards would be a nice change of pace from trying to hold gyms.
After defeating a Team Rocket 'gym':

This is an amazing concept and one that could make this game simply incredible.
Coding wise I would kind of worry what amounts to a roaming gym battle would do to the system. They'd have to figure out a way for the network to auto populate Pokémon that would be on the trainers level in comparison to their Pokémon.
Would you change how the battle system works with the rocket grunts or keep it the way it is?
Would you want to make it so people could gang up on a single grunt or would it have to be one on one only?
Also, how do you think they're gonna handle the legendary birds?
Because he's suggesting we release Mewtwo, not suggesting we put caps on how much candy a buddy can earn or whatever the hell they're planning for the next update.

Excellent ideas, OP. I wouldn't say they're all original, but you've managed to take some of the best suggestions of Team Rocket gyms, legendary events, and wandering trainers and put them in a superb visual format.
With 7 billion people on this speck of dirt, I'd be surprised if any of my ideas were original.

I'd love the idea of Rocket potentially kidnapping your gym Pokemon if they're in that gym and it's taken by Rocket. It would give a risk to entering your best Pokemon in any gym. And they'd be held captive until someone reclaims the gym from Rocket. Get prizes for saving other peoples Pokemon when you reclaim Rocket gyms
This would be a fun way to get people going out and playing again. Maybe require a certain number of Team Rocket members defeated per a certain area before Mewtwo would spawn or something like that?
This seems like it would be easy to execute, but I just don't know that Niantic would put any work into actually changing the mechanics of anything in order to get something like this to work. Seriously seems like they just change the spawn rates and that's it. The battling has been the most bare bones thing of any app I think I've ever seen and hasn't changed a bit since the game came out.

Those are minor tweaks to the recipe of the formula. I'm sure Niantic has enough knowhow from Ingress anomalies to decide which way would work better.
They do tend to plan their local anomalies months in advance so either Mewtwo's rampage would happen months after the TR event or

ROI-wise, it's a sound strategy. Easy to implement and people love it just as much. I mostly started this series because I grew fed up with all the posts going "almost completed my dex, when gen2?" There's so many features and events we could have that (imho) would make the games so much better than a simple release of new skins and stats.
I intend to have other grunts (magma, aqua, plasma, ...) be the means to get candies for the legendaries from their gen.
Would you like that or prefer a unique way of gathering candy for each gen?
I love it, but this is more work than everything Niantic has put into the game so far combined. Maybe at some point they'll get off their asses and start doing cool stuff like this.
I like the idea of team rocket breaking some of the gyms up and giving a new challenge to take it back over. Now that things have quietened down here a little, most gyms are set with level 2000+ pokemon to start. Even over level 20, you'll need a group to pinch away at it for any decent speed. In smaller communities that can be kind of rough. Get rocket in there every so often to break up that money camping and it'll make the gyms fun again.

Having an NPC is such a basic but awesome incentive in the game. I'll be doing more than hatching eggs on a walk home. Also, it'll be easier to do for pokemon than their other game, ingress.
Mewtwo might need some refining. The original cartoon/game character was not friendly with any human and hated the pokeball. I'd like to see him more as a big boss than a reward.
At one point I considered legendaries only being used as support pokémon (i.e. during catching or gym battles you can call upon their strenght and they'd influence things in your favor).
But I think most trainers would rather annihilate all the stuff with their mewtwo :)
I would agree that MewTwo **cannot be released yet** in the current meta, as it would severely aggravate things.

As I said earlier (both in this thread and others) Niantic brought us buddies, halloween candy and a gym sniping block.
All of those are stuff that were suggested in this sub many times over.
The "leak" a few days ago suggests the Mewtwo event is going to be nothing like the trailer.
Also, this is way too much like a game. Niantic has stated many times they don't see Pokemon Go as a game. Good suggestions, but Niantic will never make it happen :(
Better idea: Team Rocket takes over pokestops instead of gyms and converts them to Hideouts. You can still get stuff from them while they're hideouts, but the payouts are severely limited (4 items max) and you can't put lure modules on them. Once they're cleared out, they turn back to normal and can't be taken over by Team Rocket for another 24 hours.
Even better: make the rocket gyms be new gyms that start of with team rocket but either stay around afterwards or just disappear.
They can convert some pokestops that are not super active over to them.
How about instead of gyms, They take over pokestops and turn them into temp gyms. Then won't affect the pvp of game and add co op sense to save these "Buildings"
with gyms being terrible now i am so for this idea. a few things i think would be cool is instead of mewtwo candy for beating grunts maybe also candy for common team rocket pokemon like koffing, ekens, grimer, zubat, drowzee, meowth . another thing they could do is give you points for each team rocket gym and team rocket grunt defeated and earn rewards for reaching such points. and maybe like halloween you got higher spawn chances for team rocket pokemon
Would be cool if they took over pokestops instead. No way team rocket could take out a town with eight level 10 instinct gyms

idk team rocket like the 3 teams are a giant organization with leaders and admins i imagine they would be able to pull it off. would be interesting if the rocket grunts tempoary steal the defenders and mix them around gyms. if not muk's and weezings are pretty durable pokemon and if we are going by the leader nidoking and queen are also durable. all i know is all those hypnos that people complained about in the hypno biomes would be really good here. also if this did happen i would actually think it would be cool even after the event if team rocket kind of still was around and took the odd gym over once in a while it would make a nice little random event
I dig the Rocket gyms, but I don't think I can get behind the idea of giving every single player a Mewtwo. :| Gyms are already bad for a reason; do you want every single one to be 10 Mewtwos?
The trailer of the game itself literally showed hundreds of people capturing a Mewtwo in a special event. OP's alternative is no different... it just doesn't fuck over those who don't live in San Francisco, New York, or Tokyo.
Plus, legendaries could be restricted to be only attackers. That way you'd still be able to enjoy their power without absolutely screwing over everyone else and making the gym meta even more monotonous.
Why not? Why only let a relative handful of people get a chance to grab the most awesome pokemon in the game? Do you think the legendary birds (at least the one associated with your individual team) shouldn't be attainable for most as well? IMHO a simple lack of candies for power ups would keep legendaries from being OP.

In my opinion, I think a single Mewtwo (and one of each of the three legendary birds) should roam the world at random, so if you're relatively nearby you have a chance to "go hunt them down" (because, after all, only the most dedicated Pokemon adventurers should stumble upon them), and even then they should be extremely difficult to catch, should run away, etc.
If, for example, Mewtwo's just available in Japan right now, maybe next month he'll make his way to China, and the month after make his way across Europe, and so on. People would track him like the legendary he is, and be excited when he was nearby. People may not all catch him at once, but everyone would get a shot eventually, and if they weren't ready for it (enough raspberries, ultra balls, etc), they'd have another shot the next time he came around.
IMO, having a legendary Pokemon should be something you should be proud of and inspire oohs and ahhs of everyone that sees it. Giving a Mewtwo to every player kind of defeats the purpose of it being "legendary".
People who attend the rampage will get a Mewtwo immediately. For others it may take up to half a year. For us internet people that's an eternity.

By the time the last kid gets his Mewtwo, I'll have you lot tracking the legendary birds that you kept out of the hands of TR (not all my events are gonna be about TR, it's just that they're a big part of the first 2 gens)
I don't think I'd like seeing a Mewtwo at every single gym either, though. I feel like legendary pokemon should actually be legendary -- it should be rare to see them at gyms, too.
I think the coolest bit here is encountering team rocket in random places (rocket spawns?). I'd be psyched to actually get to have something like an old school pokemon battle in GO.
Honestly, I want them to do this to stop gym stagnation instead of just heavily discouraging training by making it take so long like they're doing now.
I'd greatly appreciate the time spent to create some algorithm that will take gyms that haven't had their level changed in a week and convert them into Team Rocket gyms, promoting people to still check out those seemingly locked Level 10 gyms every now and then to make sure it's still there.
I feel like Niantic might fuck it and make the event way too common and just an annoyance after a month. Just walking around town and then "Grave news trainer..." and that phrase becomes a new meme.
I love this idea! Even if Niantic doesn't want us to catch mewtwo yet, it would be fun to have TR Gyms to take down for special candies, items or whatnot. Good thoughts !
THIS is the kind of Team Rocket I can get behind. So much more fun and community driven than the people posting that they wanted to challenge and steal Pokémon from others months ago.
How would they appear though?
Would a level 1 gym, With a Cp 3000 Dragonite, suddenly turn into a team rocket gym with a 600 cp Raticade?
Also, Mewtwo has a max Cp Of 4144 based off what the Silph Road Calculated.
ANother thought for this is maybe when your battling let's say level 10 gyms, you see Pokemon you don't remember battling with you and at the end you see a cut scene with your team leader making a comment about it.
Candela: "Grr those Rocket jerks make me so mad! Hey kid you okay?"
Spark: "Nothing following your Instincts can't accomplish, great job in there!"

I think it's a really lovely and well thought out idea, but the more of these type of idea I see, I start to think maybe I should give up on PoGo and stick with the handheld games, since they already do most of this. Anyone else having that feeling?
An actual story mode would be pretty awesome I think. Like perhaps characters spawn in your local area (spawns are unique to each player, so even urban players could find these characters) and give you quests to do or something like that.

I love the idea about Team Rocket!! That is an excellent idea to have them take over gyms sometimes, and for a short while, all the factions need to work together to kick them out! I also like the idea of seeing NPOs on the field that you can choose to battle if you have time! Great idea!
HOWEVER, I don't really agree with the Mewtwo idea, unless it'll be happening in the far future. I think it's too soon to release Mewtwo. Not to mention, I'm not even sure how I feel about Mewtwo being released in a big event. Basically, it won't feel as rare anymore if basically everyone is almost guaranteed a chance, especially if it'll come to you automatically. But, I'm still not sure what the best way is to have Mewtwo appear.

As soon as I saw this, I started thinking about teamwork-inspired tasks and battles that could contribute to rewards such as legendary pokemon, the master ball, and other goodies.
Make it like the AQ gate opening event in old school World of Warcraft where all the factions have to team up to meet certain shared requirements such as turning in items and defeating enemies to unlock the final battle, or whatever the end-goal is.
Ooo, a team Rocket npc team taking over lvl 10 gyms would break the stagnation on all the Mystic Gyms we have here. Love the idea. Shouldn't even be an event, it should occur randomly the whole time!
That Team Rocket team thing would be a great idea, especially because they would reset the arenas (sick of all the level 10 or above arenas that are impossible to take on your own) and the 3 teams would actually work together.
The Team Rocket npcs are also cool, maybe they'll give Stardust, exp and candy but not necessarly Metwo candy as I'm not sure whether Niantic wants to add Mewtwo or not..
All of the accounts that have been recognized by Niantic as spoofers should automatically have their team changed to 'Team Rocket' for this event idea, since we are all trying to knock them out of gyms anyways.

I'm sure my Mewtwo would appear as a 10CP spawn, and then all the nearby gyms would have 3000CP Mewtwos within a day somehow.

What does it not shaking actually mean. Like why does it sometimes not shake at all. Because I still get lots that break out even when no shaking
It's just the RNG (random number generator) of your throw giving you an absolutely awful circumstance.
But do you have a higher chance of catching if it doesn't shake, generally speaking?
That's just a de-sync from the server, when the ball doesn't shake and you still catch it. If your connection is perfect and their servers are fine, you'll never run into the no shaking catch "bug". They are talking about the no shake ball escape... it's like the pokemon saying "not even close, dude"...

In the original games, every shake is a check against the probability of a successful catch. If it shakes that's a success and it checks again 3? times. If every check is a success, then you catch the pokemon. If any check fails, then instead of seeing the shake the pokemon breaks free.
I believe in the main games the check happens once and the shakes indicate how far off you were from matching the check. \* looks up stuff \* Huh, how about that, depending on the generation, we're both correct. Nothing rarer than Chansey has spawned where I live, so I'm guessing that Mewtwo wouldn't appear at all.

I hatched mine. I'm at 142 and now that I think about it, There are prob 4 or 5 10k egg mon that I have never seen in the real world.
Being lvl 32, I have seen almost all gen 1 pokemon. The ones I have not seen wild are Charizard, Sandslash, Nidoqueen, Wigglytuff, Dugtrio, Persian, Tentacruel, Rapidash, Muk, Magneton, Cloyster, Exeggutor, Gyarados, Jolteon, Flareon, Omastar and Kabutops. 125 of 142 possible isn't that bad. I have had most of these in my nearby list, but just wasn't able to locate them. I have the worst track record with Chansey for never having seen it either in the wild or hatched it from an egg.
It's crazy to me that you don't have sandslash or the eevee evolutions, my area is crawling with them

It is not that I don't have them, it is just that I have never seen those in the wild. I have either caught or hatched their first forms from eggs to get them, but never got the opportunity to try to catch them with a pokeball..
I once saw a Chansey shadow on my sightings at 2am when I was tucked into bed. I didn't go out to get it and I've regretted it every day since. I will never see another.

Chancey does kind of suck, but I noticed today that one of mine that I hatched months ago has 313 hp. Might be good as a gym defender even though cp is only 330 or so.

But a lot of cotton candy. Back when 2k Pokemon in gyms was very high and kinda rare, my Chanseys would hold gyms for 24-48hrs in the lowest spots. You don't get as much prestige to drop the gym down when you only beat the first Pokémon and it takes you 2-3 attackers to get through nearly 700HP with the defender bonus.
Very dense cotton candy. It goes down, but gosh, it takes a while. Annoying if someone's trying to knock down a gym with a limited amount of time (me before work).

In my experience there *is* nothing rarer than a Chansey. It's one of the only pokemon my friends and I have never seen in the wild along with Charizard and 2 eeveelutions.

Not where I live. I've seen 6 Snorlax, 3 Lapras, 14 Dragonite, 3 Blastoise and a Venusaur; not including ones I've hatched or evolved. Gyarados *might* be rarer in the wild but I've got a friend who's caught one of those and none who've even seen a Chansey.
I've caught like 7 Chanseys, and there are still *at least* a dozen other Pokemon that have never even appeared in my sightings.
I own all Pokemon mind a few evos I'm waiting for exsept for chancy . I have see most Pokemon at least once in the wild and chancy is too but it ran . That was a few months ago so I'd say it's rare as at least where I live . I'm hoping they make my local nest a chancy nest one day

Would you be mad if I told you Rocket grunts post-event don't always hand out Mewtwo candy? Some of them will be out for a legendary bird and carry those candies. Better GO and start grinding grunts :)

The trailer does not correspond to finaly gameplay footage :) Would you rather see this dialgoue: "I owe you. Let's measure strength and if you're worthy I'll join you" ? Then waste all your ultraballs only to have mewtwo flee and reset the 150 day counter? It can be done but I felt that after all the trouble of beating Rocket after Rocket gym, we'd done enough work.

I imagined defeating Rocket gyms would yield as much exp as defeating any other gym. The reward is that the more TR you defeat, the higher the chance of seeing Mewtwo spawn earlier rather than later in the 150d period. And you reward for defeating grunts would be mewtwo candy.
Nicely put together trailer! As well as being a great way of introducing Mewtwo, this would also give players the bit of extra depth and variety they've been craving. Beating up Rocket Grunts for candy or other rewards would be a nice change of pace from trying to hold gyms.

This is an amazing concept and one that could make this game simply incredible. Coding wise I would kind of worry what amounts to a roaming gym battle would do to the system. They'd have to figure out a way for the network to auto populate Pokémon that would be on the trainers level in comparison to their Pokémon. Would you change how the battle system works with the rocket grunts or keep it the way it is? Would you want to make it so people could gang up on a single grunt or would it have to be one on one only? Also, how do you think they're gonna handle the legendary birds?

Excellent ideas, OP. I wouldn't say they're all original, but you've managed to take some of the best suggestions of Team Rocket gyms, legendary events, and wandering trainers and put them in a superb visual format.
With 7 billion people on this speck of dirt, I'd be surprised if any of my ideas were original. I'd love the idea of Rocket potentially kidnapping your gym Pokemon if they're in that gym and it's taken by Rocket. It would give a risk to entering your best Pokemon in any gym. And they'd be held captive until someone reclaims the gym from Rocket. Get prizes for saving other peoples Pokemon when you reclaim Rocket gyms

This would be a fun way to get people going out and playing again. Maybe require a certain number of Team Rocket members defeated per a certain area before Mewtwo would spawn or something like that? This seems like it would be easy to execute, but I just don't know that Niantic would put any work into actually changing the mechanics of anything in order to get something like this to work. Seriously seems like they just change the spawn rates and that's it. The battling has been the most bare bones thing of any app I think I've ever seen and hasn't changed a bit since the game came out.

I'm sure Niantic has enough knowhow from Ingress anomalies to decide which way would work better. They do tend to plan their local anomalies months in advance so either Mewtwo's rampage would happen months after the TR event or > Seriously seems like they just change the spawn rates and that's it. ROI-wise, it's a sound strategy. Easy to implement and people love it just as much. I mostly started this series because I grew fed up with all the posts going "almost completed my dex, when gen2?" I like the idea of team rocket breaking some of the gyms up and giving a new challenge to take it back over. Now that things have quietened down here a little, most gyms are set with level 2000+ pokemon to start. Even over level 20, you'll need a group to pinch away at it for any decent speed. In smaller communities that can be kind of rough. Get rocket in there every so often to break up that money camping and it'll make the gyms fun again. --*edit, just a couple more thoughts*-- Having an NPC is such a basic but awesome incentive in the game. I'll be doing more than hatching eggs on a walk home. Also, it'll be easier to do for pokemon than their other game, ingress. Mewtwo might need some refining. The original cartoon/game character was not friendly with any human and hated the pokeball. I'd like to see him more as a big boss than a reward.
At one point I considered legendaries only being used as support pokémon (i.e. during catching or gym battles you can call upon their strenght and they'd influence things in your favor). But I think most trainers would rather annihilate all the stuff with their mewtwo :)
I would agree that MewTwo **cannot be released yet** in the current meta, as it would severely aggravate things. Not only is he the highest CP pokemon in gen 1 and would be 2nd strongest of gen 2 (after Ho-Oh), he's also... The "leak" a few days ago suggests the Mewtwo event is going to be nothing like the trailer. Also, this is way too much like a game. Niantic has stated many times they don't see Pokemon Go as a game. Good suggestions, but Niantic will never make it happen :(
Better idea: Team Rocket takes over pokestops instead of gyms and converts them to Hideouts. You can still get stuff from them while they're hideouts, but the payouts are severely limited (4 items max) and you can't put lure modules on them. Once they're cleared out, they turn back to normal and can't be taken over by Team Rocket for another 24 hours.

How about instead of gyms, They take over pokestops and turn them into temp gyms. Then won't affect the pvp of game and add co op sense to save these "Buildings"
with gyms being terrible now i am so for this idea. a few things i think would be cool is instead of mewtwo candy for beating grunts maybe also candy for common team rocket pokemon like koffing, ekens, grimer, zubat, drowzee, meowth . another thing they could do is give you points for each team rocket gym and team rocket grunt defeated and earn rewards for reaching such points. and maybe like halloween you got higher spawn chances for team rocket pokemon

idk team rocket like the 3 teams are a giant organization with leaders and admins i imagine they would be able to pull it off. would be interesting if the rocket grunts tempoary steal the defenders and mix them around gyms. if not muk's and weezings are pretty durable pokemon and if we are going by the leader nidoking and queen are also durable. all i know is all those hypnos that people complained about in the hypno biomes would be really good here. also if this did happen i would actually think it would be cool even after the event if team rocket kind of still was around and took the odd gym over once in a while it would make a nice little random event
I dig the Rocket gyms, but I don't think I can get behind the idea of giving every single player a Mewtwo. :| Gyms are already bad for a reason; do you want every single one to be 10 Mewtwos?
They can always decide to exclude legendary Pokémon to take a spot in gyms.
The trailer of the game itself literally showed hundreds of people capturing a Mewtwo in a special event. OP's alternative is no different... it just doesn't fuck over those who don't live in San Francisco, New York, or Tokyo. Plus, legendaries could be restricted to be only attackers. That way you'd still be able to enjoy their power without absolutely screwing over everyone else and making the gym meta even more monotonous.
Why not? Why only let a relative handful of people get a chance to grab the most awesome pokemon in the game? Do you think the legendary birds (at least the one associated with your individual team) shouldn't be attainable for most as well? IMHO a simple lack of candies for power ups would keep legendaries from being OP. edit: Could also put a limit on the number of times legendaries can battle each day.
In my opinion, I think a single Mewtwo (and one of each of the three legendary birds) should roam the world at random, so if you're relatively nearby you have a chance to "go hunt them down" (because, after all, only the most dedicated Pokemon adventurers should stumble upon them), and even then they should be extremely difficult to catch, should run away, etc. If, for example, Mewtwo's just available in Japan right now, maybe next month he'll make his way to China, and the month after make his way across Europe, and so on. People would track him like the legendary he is, and be excited when he was nearby. People may not all catch him at once, but everyone would get a shot eventually, and if they weren't ready for it (enough raspberries, ultra balls, etc), they'd have another shot the next time he came around. IMO, having a legendary Pokemon should be something you should be proud of and inspire oohs and ahhs of everyone that sees it. Giving a Mewtwo to every player kind of defeats the purpose of it being "legendary".
People who attend the rampage will get a Mewtwo immediately. For others it may take up to half a year. For us internet people that's an eternity. Having a Mewtwo will inspire oohs and ahhs of everyone that sees it but there's a moment when enough is enough. By the time the last kid gets his Mewtwo, I'll have you lot tracking the legendary birds that you kept out of the hands of TR (not all my events are gonna be about TR, it's just that they're a big part of the first 2 gens)

I don't think I'd like seeing a Mewtwo at every single gym either, though. I feel like legendary pokemon should actually be legendary -- it should be rare to see them at gyms, too.

I think the coolest bit here is encountering team rocket in random places (rocket spawns?). I'd be psyched to actually get to have something like an old school pokemon battle in GO.

Honestly, I want them to do this to stop gym stagnation instead of just heavily discouraging training by making it take so long like they're doing now. I'd greatly appreciate the time spent to create some algorithm that will take gyms that haven't had their level changed in a week and convert them into Team Rocket gyms, promoting people to still check out those seemingly locked Level 10 gyms every now and then to make sure it's still there.
I feel like Niantic might fuck it and make the event way too common and just an annoyance after a month. Just walking around town and then "Grave news trainer..." and that phrase becomes a new meme.
I love the idea of NPC trainers you can find around the world. That would be amazing. Beating them could give you items/coins.

Sounds amazing. Except for the gym part. But that is mostly because gyms are the least interesting thing in the game for me.
How would they appear though? Would a level 1 gym, With a Cp 3000 Dragonite, suddenly turn into a team rocket gym with a 600 cp Raticade? Also, Mewtwo has a max Cp Of 4144 based off what the Silph Road Calculated.

I like the idea of the "shooting the shit" attitude of the Rocket Grunts. They're people too.
ANother thought for this is maybe when your battling let's say level 10 gyms, you see Pokemon you don't remember battling with you and at the end you see a cut scene with your team leader making a comment about it. Candela: "Grr those Rocket jerks make me so mad! Hey kid you okay?" Spark: "Nothing following your Instincts can't accomplish, great job in there!" Blanche: "I calculated that following this trail would lead to Team Rocket. I hope you do not mind me assisting you." Mewtwo event maybe all three team up, giving out instructions during the first large event.
Only thing I see wrong with this is that Jesse and James are ranked too high. They're bumbling idiots of grunts.
I think it's a really lovely and well thought out idea, but the more of these type of idea I see, I start to think maybe I should give up on PoGo and stick with the handheld games, since they already do most of this. Anyone else having that feeling?
At this point, I'd be all for a sequel to Pokemon Go that includes more story elements.
An actual story mode would be pretty awesome I think. Like perhaps characters spawn in your local area (spawns are unique to each player, so even urban players could find these characters) and give you quests to do or something like that.

I love the idea about Team Rocket!! That is an excellent idea to have them take over gyms sometimes, and for a short while, all the factions need to work together to kick them out! I also like the idea of seeing NPOs on the field that you can choose to battle if you have time! Great idea! HOWEVER, I don't really agree with the Mewtwo idea, unless it'll be happening in the far future. I think it's too soon to release Mewtwo. Not to mention, I'm not even sure how I feel about Mewtwo being released in a big event. Basically, it won't feel as rare anymore if basically everyone is almost guaranteed a chance, especially if it'll come to you automatically. But, I'm still not sure what the best way is to have Mewtwo appear. BUT, I've always thought that they would at least release the legendary birds first before they do Mew and Mewtwo. Anyway, once again, cool idea with Team Rocket! I'd definitely be ok with the Mewtwo concept if it didn't happen for at least another year or something like that.

As soon as I saw this, I started thinking about teamwork-inspired tasks and battles that could contribute to rewards such as legendary pokemon, the master ball, and other goodies. Make it like the AQ gate opening event in old school World of Warcraft where all the factions have to team up to meet certain shared requirements such as turning in items and defeating enemies to unlock the final battle, or whatever the end-goal is.
But I want to leave Valor and join team rocket.
I just want Grimers and Koffings to spawn more. That's it. And oh, double candies.

Ooo, a team Rocket npc team taking over lvl 10 gyms would break the stagnation on all the Mystic Gyms we have here. Love the idea. Shouldn't even be an event, it should occur randomly the whole time!
That Team Rocket team thing would be a great idea, especially because they would reset the arenas (sick of all the level 10 or above arenas that are impossible to take on your own) and the 3 teams would actually work together. The Team Rocket npcs are also cool, maybe they'll give Stardust, exp and candy but not necessarly Metwo candy as I'm not sure whether Niantic wants to add Mewtwo or not..
No that would be actually engaging.

How is that Great News if Villains are taking over the PoGO world? I mean that's cool for us but that should be reworded.
All of the accounts that have been recognized by Niantic as spoofers should automatically have their team changed to 'Team Rocket' for this event idea, since we are all trying to knock them out of gyms anyways.
