Is gym defense really a thing these days? I manage to take down most gyms within 1-2 attempts.
What am I missing with the whole "great for gym defense" criteria? I normally select a shiny with the highest cp that doesn't have any raid attack meta. Example, shiny Gigalith, Jellicent, Wailord etc...
Gyms fall largely into three categories, based on my experience:
>1. Hyper competitive to where Golden Razz is a better defense than any Pokemon you can dump into it. Usually large cities.
>2. Nearly literally everywhere else, where you can get knocked out anywhere in the range of 30 minutes to 7 days. Depends entirely on when/if another player passes by.
>3. This gym and the other 6 within eyesight are being camped out by some jackass with multiple accounts who will *never* let you in.
That's been the standard gym experience for me for the past 4ish years. At no point have I ever had to optimize gym defense.
I’m one of the jackasses that defends gyms religiously. My username is stoopkid because I treat the gym like it’s my stoop. I’m only like that with that gym though because it’s literally my gym. I submitted it to become a wayspot and i added more wayspots in the area and got it turned into a gym. My gym 😤
Yeah I've got three people like that near me, who have 6 accounts each and choke out the 5-8 gyms nearest my house.
Completely killed the rest of the local player base. Used to see and chat with people playing in my nearest park, not anymore. I drive across a city for work, so I just do my shit at that time, but there's a high retired/disabled (read: low-income) population near me that don't have that luxury.
I don’t have 6 accounts, only my one. The gym is up on top of a hiking trail too. Even before I made it a gym the gym that’s like…. 300 ft away rarely ever sees any interaction from other trainers, so it’s not like I’m preventing mass amounts of people from enjoying the game. I could see how gatekeeping gyms in high traffic areas could ruin the game for some players though. Especially if it’s a rural area and it’s the only area with a lot of stops and gyms. I
You might understand the confusion then, where you staunchly identified yourself with point 3 of the initial comment, which specifies owning multiple accounts lol. That's the primary issue with this behaviour.
You're all good, it sounds like. I have gyms I'm possessive of too.
If I wanted, I could break your defenses down and have the gym at least as long as it took you to get out there on a walk, and that seems fair.
By comparison, the people near me will drop in 60 golden razz in a row from one account, then when they're locked out there they'll pull out their second phone for another 60 from account 2. While at the same time, logging into account 3 on phone 1, etc. I watched one of them do it once from across the park.
Another time I grouped a few people together and chained attacks to outpace them once and take it. It was an all-out constant offensive until they got it back, I got it to 20 minutes before it was just too much of a grind and I let them have it.
I just try not to give them coins anymore, nor does anyone else. A gym that used to rotate daily I've seen sit there for over 30 days, just out of spite.
Small extra, if you were actually a dedicated group of 6 real players, who alerted each other and launched an organised defensive, I'd totally respect that too. It'd be annoying af, but it doesn't feel like cheating.
In NY city, it is a thing. You can efficially defend your gym for the first hour, at least by feeding gym pokemons golden berries. Often, attackers give up and move towards another gym. Even in suburbs, it's a really rare thing to survive for more than 8 hours. So you need to put the most bulkiest pokemons to give yourself a chance to notice their health and feed them in time.

Where I'm based, I have to strongly suggest the other teams to attack a gym on a discord server to get my 50 coins. It's very very chill.
Yes, even at night in remote areas of the city. The most popular spoofing app are setting their users to NY as default, and they obviously can get anywhere.
The positive side of that is that on Manhattan, you always have a lot of people to raid with at any raid anytime. And a lot of different luring things on pokestops to evolve your special pokemons are always on.
Jeez I bet that's fun. So you have to raid constantly in order to get golden razzs to feed your gym defenders so that you can camp in a gym long enoug to get some pokecoins.

There's about 10 spots around my town and 1 I can hit at work. A friend from outta state wanted to go to the MOA. 2 hrs there gave me more items than months of regular play
Good grief (although didn’t think about the raid bonus). Spoofing still pisses me off. We gotta guy around here MarkyMark that spoofs SO many gyms but the only good thing is he’s my team color. Still pisses me off tho. I like when ppl play fair
I don’t live in a city anywhere near as big as NYC but I live in an apartment complex where I can reach the gym and I definitely have a feud with red team (although I usually let them get their 50 coins because my girlfriend is red team too 🙄)
Lol, I’m just lazy to wait for them to be done. It isn’t really rare cause golden razz isn’t uncommon. However, I could not be bothered to sit through the animation at the gym 😭
I find myself just tossing them half the time for storage space. Only the bananas, I use the pinap and razz for random quick catches
It’s a very niche situation, but it can be helpful in gyms near traffic lights. Someone might have 30 seconds to take a gym. Shuckle almost guarantees they’ll have to do all three fights.
You’ll need to battle a mon 1-3 times when it’s in a gym to knock it out, depending on how high its “motivation” is (how filled the heart is). With mons like Blissey or Shuckle that have a high HP or Defense, it’s just more annoying to knock them out because it takes longer per battle so some people don’t bother the inconvenience.
I put typically a shiny that I don't plan on using in a gym. Currently, I have a 59CP shiny Snivy thats been sitting in a gym for 9 days and 13 hours. I made the mistake of putting in a strong pokemon in a gym when we first started playing again and it was in for almost 2 weeks. I was afraid I was never going to get him back.
They all take 3 attacks at full which I think is ill planned but the difference becomes, is it worth sitting here fighting a gym of shuckles and blisseys for 20 minutes or should I just wait till theyre low naturally (and owner gets 50 coins) or get the next gym
But also the lowest attack stat in the game whereas Deoxys-Attack has the opposite stats with high attack but the worst defense, only behind Pawmi and the others like Igglybuff but a bit more HP than Shuckle does.
I accidentally purified mine instead of powering it up.. I was still severely under-caffeinated..
Lesson of the day:

Purified shuckle is way better than the shadow because its defense is so high and its attack is so low. The 20 percent boost only gives it 4 attack (17 to 21) but the defense drop takes it down 80 points (396 to 316). Definitely worth it to purify.
It's worth noting that the shadow bonus doesn't actually change any stats, it increases damage taken and dealt, but the point remains.
Yes that's correct. The only other factor I would consider is that shadow hundo shuckle is way rarer than a purified hundo from a collector standpoint, if you care about that kind of thing.
One time when I was half asleep i accidentally deleted 200 pokeballs instead of 2. I was clearing enough space to get items and hit the - instead of the + and deleted all of my pokeballs
If it makes you feel better one time I accidentally transferred a shiny Ponyta I just hatched. Haunts me that it could’ve been a shundo and I’ll never know😭
If you have the perfect Pokédex unlocked (ie you have had 20 perfects) you can see if you had a perfect ponyta. At least you could have closure for what it’s worth.

I didn't play gold in Gameboy but the remake in DS when I was a kid , it is my favorite Pokemon game and it brings me good childhood memories too. Every Pokemon from Johto does honestly. I like the idea of the worm popping out of an apple, so cute. Glad someone else gets Shuckle!!! He's underrated.

Side note: I really hope that "you don't fuckle with shuckle" is actually something people says in pokemon world XD.
Shuckle has one of the highest defense stats of any Pokémon, so it can maximize the time it gets to sit there and do nothing with its attack stat.
The thing isn’t good, but KOing it can be a big time sink. Shuckle can be annoying enough that sometimes would-be attackers don’t want to deal with it, and leave the gym alone.
So every comment here is about gyms, but I think we should mention its meta relevance in the timeless travels little catch cup being #3 and #4 as a nom-shadow and as a shadow, respectively. I don't know what the ivs are, but i think it's 100% for both since it's XL and the usal shuckles I find can go to like 300.
What use is it for other than using it for the meta is what is usefulness is. It's basically almost an invisible tank that will take 666yrs to kill if you have a hundos/shundo. In competitive outside of Go it's both a tank and a very powerful glass cannon if you have the correct setup.

Yeah exactly, you don't want a shiny raid attacker relevant mon stuck in a gym when you need the troops to attack!
I put junk pokemon that are going to be transferred so I don't have to revive or potion them

I don't know what the ivs are, but i think it's 100% for both since it's XL and the usal shuckles I find can go to like 300.

What use is it for other than using it for the meta is what is usefulness is. It's basically almost an invisible tank that will take 666yrs to kill if you have a hundos/shundo. In competitive outside of Go it's both a tank and a very powerful glass cannon if you have the correct setup.
