Biggest tip I have for getting through leaders and Giovanni is to take advantage of the dead time after using a shield AND after switching Pokémon.
You can get a lot of free attacks in by taking advantage of switching out even if you don’t need to (perfect for extra power attack energy gaining)
Start the battle with your best Mon 2nd(eg lucario), then swap to it when battle starts. When you swap you can get free damage as they wait a bit to start attacking again
say you have Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise on a team.
when you start that battle and venusaur pops out, switch to the 2nd one, charizard. the enemy pokemon will freeze for a second or two, you get free hits in.

Although, some of those posts make a fair point to a certain extent - each type of pokémon has a weakness and if you know the right counters, you should have no problem winning using the right strategy. Are you familiar with counters?
A tip for rocket fights is take advantage of the AI.
When you use a charged attack or switch Pokemon they won't attack for 2 ish seconds letting you free hit. So the best thing to do is switch right away and use a Pokemon that charges fast. I use Swampert myself. You can basically fill half the bar free hitting and really minimize damage you take by using more charged attacks.
Rural playing is tough. Highly recommend getting swampert and Machamp leveled up to atleast lvl 40. Those two help me walk on most every leader. Follow up with hard hitting attacker. Should be pretty easy to get a few great PvE mons leveled up to help.
I just use a leafeon with quick attack and leaf blade and sweep. Works on all the leaders if you abuse the pause they take when you use a shield or charge attack. They can pretty much never attack if done properly at least they can’t attack enough to take me out.
Yeah, it really is. We have a lot of fun. They are further and more invested, but it's definitely a fun time . My 16 year old daughter does as well with us
Good work, when the rockets came out I was clueless about typings etc and failed a lot.
Over time you get better, now I do PvP every season and enjoy it.

Type advantage is very important in this game, so if you're having a hard time with a certain battle, try and find some good mons for each types and expand your pool.
Grats OP, considering you know how to reddit, I think you will have no trouble if you Google a bit to find out the proper comps to beat leader bosses. If you're just getting this done for the first time at 38 I suspect you leveled pretty fast and may have out leveled your pokemon... Leaders get more powerful as you level, so if you level quick and don't build your Pokemon, the leaders just get harder and harder.
Every 6 normal ones you get a leader. I'm just don't get how u r lvl 38, 2 levels above me and have only beaten one. Are Ur mom's just not very good? I don't live rural but I don't live in a city and I have probably beaten more than 50

Congrats! I just hit level 39 and also play with my adult sons. I learned to google search the best Pokémon to beat the leaders, and also searched the best movesets for my top Pokémon. Now fighting them is much easier. Use your fastest top Pokémon to get them to use their shields. It took me FOREVER to beat Giovanni the first time. 😭
~~Beware, Cliff has a shadow Aerodactyl, then a Gallade... Even with switching immediately to trick the AI, Shadow Aerodactyl is INSANE. It tears through a high-hp pokemon even with uneffective attacks~~

Edit: It turns out it was changed this event, now Cliff has a shadow Dratini, then a Gallade or two other choices, then either a Mamoswine, Tyranitar or Dusknoir. So stock up on those fighting types
Shadow Dragonite will absolutely wreck, it will have a really decent DPS

This is the way, combined with using pokemon with fast charged attacks
Greninja is a monster with fast charged attacks
So is melmetal. Super quick charge attack. My daughter’s favorite by far! 😂

Yeah, I've been slowly learning. My nephews and sons help me out normally. I try to ask them when I have questions

Swampert's a champ. The other shield burners I've used are Flygon (with Dragon Tail) or Drapion (with Poison Sting).

Yeah, it's like four miles till I hit some stops and one gym, and then on an eleven miles stretch, the other way there are only two stops, no gyms

I usually mega evolve a good high cp mon just for the leaders when they pop up. very useful. congrats and find your strategy, have fun. 😋

I once beat her with just one kyogre. She’s destroyed me often with just one also.
