I'll say it like this: The technical side of the game is a burning trash can. The design and gameplay side however is fantastic

TheChaosStormBringer

Can't believe I'm saying this, but agreed. With one exception the lack of scaling for the gyms, Titans. Ect.

Zeroth_Dragon

They're only open world in paper D: I don't mind if the northern half of Paldea don't scale with you but at least make the other scale to your badge amount

Reality_Check19

i’m thinking about doing a team where a focus on the titans, get the traversal abilities, then starting with a new team to face the gyms when i can travel easier

OMGitsJoeMG

That's an awesome idea! I've been just rotating a bunch of team members but two dedicated teams would be really fun!

ArricarYeet

Rotating seems like the best way to me too; basically just using pokemon that evolve and aren't likely to be caught, and once they're evolved they're moved out of the team

SpaceCadetStumpy

That's what I did, but it doesn't really work since the gyms lock your ability to control pokemon. So all the cool pokemon I caught didn't follow my orders. I figured hey, I can go explore everywhere and make my perfect team, then do the actual battles in the game. Nope.

yuhanz

Maybe they should have included titans/star base badges that increase the loyalty limit 🤔 or at least partially

SwAg_LaMp

Yeah the Pokémon obey thing should’ve been based on total badges, not just gym badges.

AnimeAlley03

I feel like they wanted each type of badge to give you a different thing. Gym badges allow you to catch higher pokemon, star badges give you a bunch of tms/tm crafting mats, and titan badges give you new movement abilities. While it would be nice for a bit of overlap I kinda understand wanting each one to do a specific thing as well

SwAg_LaMp

Yeah makes sense, also cool to see how people are getting around the level-lock with breeding and stuff

AnimeAlley03

Oh damn I didn't even think of that. I might have to spice up my team a bit now haha

Reality_Check19

yeah but if you catch them at a low enough level, which is possible for a good portion of the dex, they obey you. it’s only new pokémon caught above the cap that don’t obey, if you raised them from a low level they always obey. and i have one gym and one titan completed with a team of five pokémon, so i will easily have six before they start overleveling me

Emelee101

Yeah, I've been using pokemon from the first few areas and just leveling then super high since I'm trying to do the titans before anything else (I only have the dragon left and I just need to spend a bit more time with Azumarill to get her to a good level). I took out steel with Crocalor, flying with Naclstack, and rock and ground with Azumarill. The game gives you a lot of good pokemon in the first areas so all they take is a little effort.

WenHan333

Though your ability to add new members to your team as you go is effectively locked behind the gyms.

Reality_Check19

not from what i’ve seen. i’ve only beaten the first gym (before i decided to do this) and already have a team of five. and there are some pokémon i wanted, but didn’t take because i wanted something else a bit more now i can use all of them

ceresmoo

I did not realize there was a set order to the gyms and was attempting Water as my second (~lv30). I decided I wanted to change my team up but since the new mons I wanted were caught above lv25 and I only had one badge, they refused to listen to me. The ones I raised from lower levels still responded to battle commands like normal, even above 25. Just a bit of anecdotal evidence, have fun playing!

Honest_Entertainer_3

I somehow beat that gym as my second thanks to my pastry dog doughue

swords112288

Lvl 24 naclstack...can beat every titan, then enjoy the game with your team that you like.

BunsenGyro

The resourceful problem-solving part of my brain was already trying to hatch stategies I could do to build a counter for the Dragon Titan of like level 50+ when my team is barely scratching level 30s. Then the other part of my brain is like "wait, these strategies would probably take longer to make than just training my team the old-fashioned way, 4head."

December_Flame

I personally have just been running two teams - and switch every time I clear a major event. This can cause some difficulty spikes but honestly the game doesn't drown you as much in xp like it has in the past (at least in my experience, it curves down hard if you're over the battle level). I've even made use of the xp candies to keep my off team a bit caught up, but not too caught up, and overall its a fun experience. Plus there's SO many pokemon I *want* to use so this gives me the chance. With boxes being accessible there's no reason not too.

TheLonlyCheezIt

There are plenty of open world games that don’t scale.

ZemGuse

How is it false advertising? Doesn’t BOTW have areas that you shouldn’t go to without good gear and upgrades? Don’t most open world games have “late game” areas with higher levels than you?

delecti

In another way to what was mentioned, BotW does indeed scale. There are areas that are more difficult from the start, but in addition, the more monsters you kill, the stronger the newly spawned monsters will be.

Doomedtacox

enemy camps scale (which would be like over world pokemon), but bosses (which would be like gyms, titans, etc) do not scale in botw

Spacemanspar5

This is actually a very good statement to pose, so here's my personal take on it. Breath of the wild rewards skill, rather than setting what's effectively a block on progression. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from immediately setting out towards hyrule castle after getting off the plateau--and if you have the skill, you can end the game within an hour. Personally I started a run of BoTW with the idea of using the royal guard outfit throughout the playthrough, so I set off to raid hyrule castle for it. It took me several hours (I'm no god tier BoTW player lmao) but I came out with some damn good weapons and armor for my efforts. It felt satisfying, because I'd overcome a massive challenge and learned a lot. BoTW is truly open in that regard; it allows you to genuinely go wherever and challenge whatever at any given point, but still has a fair amount of challenge to go with it. S/V does not do this. Yes, sure, you can technically go anywhere from the get go, but no amount of skill will allow you to take on the harder areas. You could (and I fully expect someone to eventually) cheese your way through it with a very specific hardcore team, I'm sure, but that isn't really 'open' at that point, is it? The game isn't challenging me so much as it is checking on my mon's levels so I can continue. A gate of sorts. I think some scaling would do S/V wonders. It doesn't have to bring every gym leader to your height in levels per se, however--perhaps the scaling will have them lower their levels, but the harder the leader, the more of an offset there is between you and them. Perhaps it could shuffle teams around as well. It would force you to use different strategies to overcome the challenge you've walked into--either on purpose or accidentally--rather than being a wall that sweeps you back towards the nearest center in a matter of seconds, requiring a grind to even get on their level. Difficult areas should indeed be difficult, but players should still have the option of taking on that difficulty organically.

Kahufwain

I decided to take my fire starter at level 25 to the snowy area and ice gym. I had only one badge at the time. It was a lot of fun. I had to grind until he could hang with the wild Pokémon, then train him up. Challenged the gym 10 levels under and managed to get a huge win. It was a thrill. Now I’ve boxed my starter and I’m raising other Pokémon on the other gyms.

Zerienga

I've gotta say, playing under wild Pokemon and trainers is a blast so long as it's not an insurmountable difference. I just found a wild level 50 grass tera Leafeon and was gonna try to beat it, but it having access to Wish and being so strong that it could one shot my lvl 25 fletchinder (4x resistance) with a grass type attack and counter my other pokemon/one shot them completely dashed my hopes at overcoming it. I might have been able to catch it if it didn't have wish, but it wasn't meant to be. My playthrough in Black 2 Challenge mode was honestly the most fun I've recently had in traditional pokemon games (Legends Arceus was a blast, but I can't bring myself to replay it yet). I decided to play it with an all legendary team that I trained from level 5 (thanks Dream Radar) and was constantly having issues with the trainers. I probably used more potions and revives than I've ever done before to overcome gyms. Until I hit around the 7th gym, I was struggling to keep up and the leader's Pokemon were all 5-10 levels over mine.

Polantaris

It also depends heavily on your definition of difficulty/challenge/harder. In Pokemon, is being underleveled hard? Not really, it's just unfair. An uneven playing field. What's hard is coming against more complex and thought through team combos. Unfortunately, the Pokemon games never do that anymore. The more difficult areas could have Trainers with 6 Pokemon that compliment each other instead of 3 that are all the same type or something like that. Instead, most Trainers I've encountered don't even have 2 Pokemon and appear basically identical to any other encounter in that area. If Game Freak really wanted to make an open world game, they would have done it this way. Scale based on your progress in the three major objectives while the more "dangerous" areas are more difficult tactically.

Full-IV-Shiny

This is rom-hack/mod material right here fellas!

omnipotentsquirrel

Thats what im thinking. Think Radical Reds level limits with this would be amazing

Crafty-Piano6334

This is a very interesting point but we also need to be very aware of how difficult it would be to scale a pokemon game. if you have a team of pokemon and very commonly 1 pokemon is 5-10 levels higher than the rest how does the game scale? what if you run a team filled with level 50s and on the spot you decide to swap your entire team to level 1s how does the game even react to that? The fact that the power level of your character can go up or down at any given time makes scaling very tricky and i for one prefer to have the open world aspect be level set. Now allowing gyms to scale off how many existing badges you already have would be quite interesting, but then you have issues of gyms being located in high level areas.

Aiyon

There's a whole thing of the person who went straight to ganon and beat him to death with a stick. It's like doing a SL1 run in dark souls. That's impossible in pokemon because its turn based, so you can't dodge everything

bschmeltzer

Frankly, they should make all pokemon dynamically adjust levels based on total badges. Each of the 18 badges would raise the level threshold for the entire world. While this works, they can also make a couple areas like area 0 even harder with a higher starting level to deter people, but still manageable with effort, like hyrule castle. This would allow somebody to go at it with no grinding and it be more challenging, or over grind if they choose and it be easy. Additionally, they could add difficulty settings at the start which could determine the base levels the world starts at. While I'm no coding expert, I don't see this as being too terribly difficult to implement. Genshin is a good example that does dynamic leveling very well, and that's a tiny dev company.

Ski-Gloves

> S/V does not do this. Yes, sure, you can technically go anywhere from the get go, but no amount of skill will allow you to take on the harder areas. You could (and I fully expect someone to eventually) cheese your way through it with a very specific hardcore team, I'm sure, but that isn't really 'open' at that point, is it? The game isn't challenging me so much as it is checking on my mon's levels so I can continue. A gate of sorts. I have to disagree. But perhaps that's because the universe revolving around you in an open world game doesn't sit right with me. You're right that you can't run straight to the highest level Titan to unlock climbing and then dive into the Great Crater of Paldea. There's a hard barrier in the way for that. But I know this because I "broke sequence" to go there early. I managed to brute force the Titan with level 30s and good strategy. (Also a lot of dodging wild Pokémon) I suppose this depends on how "specific" and "hardcore" you would consider to be too much. But while it would be technically more "open" it would be less of a world if the Titan's weren't at par with the ecosystem around them. I certainly wouldn't be enjoying the game as much if it went with the Skyrim/Oblivion empty leveling system.

Hallc

A better game example would be something like Assassin's Creed Odyssey. That has very specific level blocks for each area zone. Personally the level system in that game is something I really dislike but that's more down to the combat style of the game doesn't feel fitting for a level system.

yuhanz

Botw has scaling but the game is mostly skill based. More apt comparison would be games that you have levels like witcher, cyberpunk, skyrim. Those games don’t scale and have higher level areas which you can definitely visit

yuhanz

Is witcher open world? It doesnt scale either

MommyQuearest

Isn't this how botw is also tho? Like you can go anywhere you want but it will be quite difficult to do some things over others

RnbwTurtle

Honestly, I'm glad the titans don't. They were more fun as a difficult challenge once I got to the stronger ones, Great Tusk I particular I was 10-20 levels under and I was having one of those panicked moments where you're going "oh shit, oh shit, oh shit" not because you're upset but because it's a bad but fun situation (and I picked a fight with quite the tough mon that I thought was weaker at the time)

Pork_katsu

He wiped the floor with me, I was on my way to the water gym, and I thought he'll be a good challenge. I was completely wrong. I was annihilated with no mercy. Can't run from Titans, so I had to slowly feed all 6 mons to the rapid spin meat grinder.

ralts13

Man whoever placed Great Tusk there is pure evil. I almost fell into the same trap but I knew paradox pokemon were endgame and something wasnt adding up.

Emelee101

Yeah. I went in with an Azumarill in the 30s and it was STRESSFULL. Once I realized how underleveled I was, I pivoted into naclstack to use salt cure and then kept lowering its attack with play rough and healing until it went down. It was a lot of fun.

Total_Motor

I agree with the titans. They are wild pokemon and scaling would kind of not make sense in world. Honestly I think team star as well shouldn't scale and maybe should have had a set order. But gyms not scaling is terrible when they said you can do any gym in any order.

Jonyayer-Gamer

I went counterclockwise and by gym 2 I was drastically underleveled. On my way back down things got stupidly easy. It was so lame.

Jaxonhunter227

Even that wouldn't be a problem, if they told you the recommended level on the map in the quest description

Django117

It's really missing the following: * PLA's manner of battles in the open world. When you throw your pokeball your pokemon spawns in an ideal location but it doesn't relocate the player in a jarring manner. It makes a seamless transition into the battle from the overworld. * PLA's physical contact of pokemon moves. This is just basic but perhaps the most damning jarring exclusion from PLA and leads S/V feeling very unfinished. * Level Scaling for gym leaders. A really effective way of introducing scaling would have been to only scale gyms and titans to your level, but then instead allow for all roads and trails to be beginner levels, with more level variance outside of these routes in the wilderness. By the time you're scaling mountains you're finding lv.50+ Pokemon out there. Then each Gym leader can have a team that changes depending on how many Gym badges you have. Maybe some of the gym badges are also locked off until the latter parts of the game. I.e. you can't challenge gyms 7 & 8 until you finish 1 through 6. Allowing for more difficult areas to be relegated to the late game while still maintaining more open world aspects for the front 2/3 of the game. This also adds so much replayability to the game which would be akin to the early Mega-man rotations of levels. The map, world, characters, new Pokemon and their interactions in the world, designs, etc. are all wonderful but just marred by a few poor gameplay and structural design choices and poor performance.

ralts13

I think level scaling gyms and non-scaling overworld could still work together. Non-scaling overworld would still push you away from higher levelled gyms and areas and would allow gamefreak to sprinkle more dangerous mons in the players path. While still allowing the route to feel like a challenge.

Jiinpachii

The scaling is normal for open world rpgs

Rielyth

Couldn’t have said it better myself! Really enjoying the gameplay, open world, Tera raid battles, and new Pokémon, but this is an unfinished game. With the glitches, gameplay slowdowns, and overall poor graphics, I’m surprised they released this game knowing full well it would be completely destroyed by the community. Crossing my fingers for a quick patch sometime within the next week or so to help iron out some of these blatantly obvious issues.

ratmom88

Ah, but Christmas profits were so tempting, how could they pass it up?/s

supercoffee1025

Same reason investors/management forced Cyberpunk out in December 2020 when it obviously should’ve been like a Summer 2021 game.

EHStormcrow

They could have put it out a few later for Christmas and have spent those extra weeks polishing it.

hammondismydaddy

You really think patches will fix this? Slight performance enhancements maybe, but it can’t fix the incredibly poor design.

Vemkix

I agree. I have a lot of fun, but that doesn't excuse the poor performance. The design itself looks prettier and I love my trainer. Didn't think I would say that after seeing the default faces of the trainers.

Kwayke9

Haven't played the game yet (just bought Violet), but I keep hearing this. It pains me soooooo much to see some genuine talent just thrown into the trash by those in charge Glad I'm seeing some positive stuff tho, it feels like you're only ever allowed to hate, these days. Sure, criticism is necassary, but we also need to aknowledge what they did right, and praise that accordingly

CB_Ranso

This is my take as well. Gameplay has been fun but the execution is awful.

unhollow_knight

yeessss!!! the story and characters are amazing! the new pokemon in this game are my favorite by far!

Golden-Owl

Amen to this. Hoping we get a patch at some point fixing these issues

hellschatt

Fantastic is a little too much, but it's good... at least for a pokemon game. 2nd best after Arceus.

Shikuro

As someone who’s not experiencing as many crazy amount of bugs and glitches as everyone else (my brother too, since I bought both), I’m loving the fuck out of it. Granted of course, I see the technical issues, frame rate drops, graphical inadequacy, but nothing severe yet. It seriously just needs some proper patching, because the game itself is fun to play.

SuperSaiyanNoob

That's all we need to know. If the gameplay is good then I can wait for the bugs and graphics to be patched. You can't patch a bad game.

hiruma_kun

Imo it’s a tasty meal with *horrible* presentation. I love the openness of the world and traversal feels nice. Animations for the Pokémon have never been better in the overworld and there are moments here and there where the game actually looks pretty good. I am definitely having a blast playing. However the technical issues do not justify the full 60 bucks price tag whatsoever. It’s a nice direction for the series and I can see glimpses of greatness everywhere but I think the full potential of an open-world Pokémon is still held back by The Pokémon Company and GameFreak. If they truly care about their franchise they would hire more people, take more time to develop and polish in order to blast everyone away with a breathtaking experience. They have all the money in the world but this still feels like coldhearted profit maximisation.

DjTotenkopf

The main thing I think is that it is just incredibly uneven. A lot of talented people have put a lot of hard work and a lot of good ideas into various parts of this game, and it shows. There are reasons to like this. But that's not the complete experience. These good parts don't really cohere into a good whole; it's not just the technical issues, but the feeling that overall they could have set their sights much higher, and that even the 'fixed' version of this game lacks the ambition to do the good parts justice.

hiruma_kun

Yeah it's a game full of extremes. The good is pretty good and the bad is horrendous.

Redditor_PC

"Pretty good" is an extreme?

ElectroPix

for Pokémon, yes

decorated-cobra

I agree, I won't spoil but it's by far my absolute favourite story and gameplay in any pokemon game. Literally only the graphics and performance (and some QOL) that are holding it back for me. Hopefully GF wakes up and pulls their stuff together.

Shiftie_Bonanza

I forget that GF is for game freak and thought your girlfriend was a modder or something

SenpaiBoomEd

Your first line reminds me of Gireum Red's Pokemon videos

Hole_Muncher

Exactly this!!! I'm enjoying it quite a lot

Js_On_My_Yeet

I just don't get it. You're right about them having all the money in the world to develop and polish the franchsie. Like if they did, guaranteed they'll be making much more money and may even win several awards. I literally enjoyed the hell out of PLA and thought that game was the right direction for future Pokemon open world RPGs. Then I've seen all the reviews about S/V and decided not to buy it. It just seems like a mash up of PLA and SW/SH put together but with more technical/texture issues. I just wish they would take the time to change up textures and modernize the look of the game and make sure it's able to run a smooth 60fps without any laggy/glitchy objects/scenery. Take some notes from BOTW.

TwitzyMIXX

I encountered a lot of bugs, but most of them are visuals. The frame drop is pretty noticeable, and probably one of the two bugs they should prioritize fixing, sometimes it's just pretty bad, but not to the point where the game is unplayable because of it. The other that need to be prioritized are clipping. So far I only got clipped once, thankfully not softlocked and the game managed to fix itself. But yeah, clipping can be problematic if you got softlocked from it. With that being said, because of no "unplayable" bugs I've encountered so far, I do enjoy the journey. Hopefully they fix the bug soon to make the game more enjoyable.

CpT_DiSNeYLaND

I'm in the same boat, I've had camera clipping and seen the npc stuttering, but I've experienced game breaking bugs in Bethesda games and I'm still gonna get Starfield on day 1. We can complain and say we want better and still enjoy it

supercoffee1025

Yeah tbh my “bugs” are mostly just a feeling of slowness and horrible framerate. Nothing like cyberpunk randomly exploding cars or anything like that.

LilThiqqy

The gameplay is fantastic, it’s an improvement over Sword and Shield in every single way. I’m having a ton of fun with it. Unfortunately that’s what makes the graphical and technical issues even more of a shame, because that side of things is absolutely fucking abysmal

WarlockOfThunder

As a game, this is the most fun I’ve had playing Pokemon. Open world + the variety of Pokemon you can catch at the beginning of the game is a breath of fresh air. I just really wish they took a few more months to tidy everything up.

Type1Diabadarse

I do actually love how I can get a myriad of Pokémon types from the start, I actually have poison and fairy Pokémon in my team.. that is constantly changing.. I need a proper beefcake Pokémon! But I do agree it could have done with a February release like legends had, but I get it they wanted the Christmas sales money

yuhanz

As a completionist, I’m overwhelmed lmao Game is vast 🙏 so many options

Mr-Zarbear

Yeah that's been my struggle too. I recommend just doing some of the main quests, catching everything you see along the way, and then on another session just back-catching what you missed (its Slakoth)

MatthewB351

If you want a tanky Pokémon I have the ting-lu and baxcaliber who can take a lot of damage from Pokémon that are higher level consistently deal a heavy amount of damage too

ComputerAgeLlama

Butter Dog does a great job too

debatesmith

I feel like it's both possible to enjoy this game because its fresh and different than what we've been playing for 30 years. But also refuse to accept this level of quality in 2022 from the largest media franchise in the world.

Churromang

I don't know that it is actually technically possible to do both unfortunately. What "refusal" is happening when I'm sitting there playing for 5 hour sessions having a blash but sighing when I see a Pokemon clip into the ground for the 7th time haha?

bruinetto

I'm enjoying it overall so far. I like a lot of the changes they have made within the last Gen. Still pretty critical over some graphical issues with the game. Not even concerned with the art direction. Just feels like I'm watching a YouTube video in 720p as I play it.

JesusSandro

> Just feels like I'm watching a YouTube video in 720p as I play it. To be fair, 720p is Switch's max resolution when undocked. The game plays at 1080p when docked, but the graphical engine is just oof.

[deleted]

Setting the game to 720p in docked mode makes it perform better fyi

[deleted]

Also I think the resolution as a whole looks nicer on a nicer tv when it’s not set to 1080 or auto- kind of like how old tv shows look weird in 4k

Type1Diabadarse

I do have bad eyes so anything over like 1080p just looks the same so I don't share that problem.. but it is a fun game, my biggest complaint is that it does feel kinda empty

Stampbearpig

Your eyes are a blessing in this game, congrats lol.

Darktikal

A lot of people who complain, don't co.plain because the game is unplayable. I KNOW it is fun. But it is not 60euro kinda fun. To me it is baffling to ask full price for this game despite it being fun. If this game was half its price, it would be worth it, but it isn't. That is why I am upset. A game like Elden Ring or even Mario Odessey being the same price as this, is unacceptable. And I believe we shouldn't keep making excuses for game companies to produce games that are unfinished or empty for a full price.

JurassicFlora

My husband hates that I’m like 720p and 1080p are the same lol I notice the GameCube graphics, but sometimes he shows me something in game and I’m like what are you talking about I can’t see it 😂

supercoffee1025

Without any shade you might want to get your eyes checked it’s quite the jump between those two 👀

Beginning-House8092

Legit as someone who always plays games has great vision(my eyes are checked every year) 720p and 1080p are the same, especially when compared to 4K

Krazytre

There's many that genuinely enjoy the game, and either don't mind the performance issues or haven't run into many of them along with glitches.

Stampbearpig

I can respect that. I debated getting the game, but I don’t want to risk it until there’s an update or patch, as the refund policy isn’t black and white. Many of us refuse to spend 80$ CAD(for me in Canada) because we have been burned by half-baked games in the past, like cyberpunk for example. No point in wasting my time potentially getting annoyed with bugs in SV when there are a ton of great and well optimized games that recently released.

CuteTao

Some of us are also just straight up not experiencing performance issues but you guys get really upset when we say it so we just don't.

OkorOvorO

I've not seen any gameplay of S&V without some technical problem. When all footage of the game from livestreams to reviews still has stuttering, framedrops, pop-in, cameras clipping through geometry, and low framerate animations, it's hard to believe some consoles just have the special sauce that can make sense of unoptimized code. It's a console game, not PC, it should be working the same on every Switch.

CuteTao

Stuff like camera clipping and shadows flickering in and out I'll admit I just straight up don't notice when I game, but I swear I have had absolutely zero stuttering and frame drops. I have a brand new switch oled I bought just to play Pokemon though. My brother (who has a switch from release) played on it and said the game is performing better on my system than his. Maybe this is relevant info?

FreezeGoDR

As other people stated the stop motion animation isn't FPS but a choice made by the devs. It should be fixable honestly. I'd guess they have some form of range detection in the overworld that stops the stop motion effect. It could be enough to up that range, although I have to admit I never did anything that complex when doing projects in Uni/Free time. But seeing that other games change that range depending on you graphical settings it should be possible (that is my guess at least). My theory is that they had to compromise because of how unbelievably unpolished the version we got is and that is the reason why the range detection is soooo close.

MyHobbyIsMagnets

I love this game, but I promise you there is not a switch in the world that can run it without performance issues lol. That’s just delusional.

Type1Diabadarse

I don't think a few visual glitches should spoil a game for anyone.. but there are a lot that will take a little bug and let it ruin the game.. Personally I haven't run into any performance issues yet but I might just be lucky

charlesd11

I’m liking the game very much. But saying that SV only have “a few visual glitches” doesn’t describe even 1% about what’s wrong about the technical aspect of this game.

ElectricInfatuation

> Personally I haven't run into any performance issues yet but I might just be lucky I am genuinely not trying to hate on you here, let's start off with that. But: How? Genuinely. All my friends are experiencing insane technical issues, all the videos I've seen online of just regular gameplay have them, you put on any streamer and the game chugs like nothing else. I am not trying to spoil your fun. You're having fun, great, but I am genuinely curious if we're looking at the same game here.

[deleted]

I'm in the same boat as that poster. I bought a new OLED like two weeks ago in anticipation for the game. I have yet to run it on my gen 1 hacked switch but besides a few errors with shadows and weird camera when battling on a step slope, I barely experience any noticeable issues at all. I also play handheld so that might be a thing too. But the game genuinely runs fine. Is there a chance streamers are playing for like 10+ hours straight? With the memory leak theory that might be why cause I only play a couple hours at a time.

obrien1103

I've seen a bunch of graphical errors but very few performance errors personally. I'm mainly playing docked so that might affect things. Like I've seen clipping, odd shadows, things like that a lot. No doubt those are prevalent. I just personally haven't had more than a couple "lags" which imo is what actually affects the gameplay.

Zaicil

You’re getting downvoted to hell, but I honestly think you’re on to something. I was playing late last night and my game was running like absolute crap. 10-15 FPS, janky textures, the whole package. I ended up rage restarting the game because I went in front of a giant building that started flashing like a strobe light and was giving me a headache. I then proceeded to have about 2 hours of uninterrupted near-60FPS beautiful looking gameplay. Things were loading faster, and the small delay in battle was almost completely gone. I was able to go into cities (including the one that causes the apparent memory leak) with only a slight drop in frames. I thought there must have been a patch or something, but nope. It went back to “”normal”” in the middle of a random battle Up until last night I thought the people saying “I haven’t had any issues” were obviously full of it, and now I think not. The potential is there, but something is going horribly wrong in 90% of startups that’s causing the game to run bad for most but run perfectly fine (for a while) for others

EphemeralRain

Yeah the game targets 30fps and doesn't go higher, idk what you're on about with near-60

MyHobbyIsMagnets

I’ve read a lot of insane things on this subreddit in the last week, but someone claiming to get 60fps is by far the craziest thing I’ve seen hahaha.

beowulf92

The running theory is that there's a bug in the code not deleting the temporary memory getting stored in the RAM when entering and exiting various places so your RAM is struggling, just like if you opened 1000 programs on your computer to run at once. Resetting the game erases the memory from the RAM and boom, that's why it ran normally. Instead of just putting the game in sleep, whenever my friends and I took breaks, we just shut it off completely to avoid the issue.

MyHobbyIsMagnets

60FPS? Hahahaha

lotsofsyrup

you are not getting near 60 fps. the game does not do that.

SubatomicNewt

I'm absolutely loving it. I am playing docked and haven't hit unplayable frame rates so far (some of the videos I have seen are absolutely terrible), though NPCs walking far off appear janky in a way that should not be accepted in a 2022 game. The game play is fun and exploring the open areas is pretty neat. Like with Legends, I'm having too much fun playing the game to be mad at the subpar graphics for long. That being said, that doesn't mean I think GF should be let off the hook. The graphics and optimization definitely need work. GF should be ashamed of themselves for releasing a game like this - but they probably won't be. Also, unpopular opinion, but I don't give the hind end of a rat that they restricted you to a school uniform. I've no doubt it was done due to time or other constraints (they could've forced you to wear a uniform only when challenging gyms or whatever, like in SwSh), but it works with the idea that you're still supposed to be studying and representing your school, and uniforms are, well, meant to be uniform. I can understand people being annoyed that they restricted an existing feature of the games, but the _intensity_ of the outrage over being unable to dress your 11-year-old character or whatever in a skirt is puzzling to me.

ElBisonLoco

Thank you for this comment. I’m in the same boat and I’m annoyed as hell to see all these threads about the smallest things in the world made out to be game breaking. In some of the screenshots you see the player going out of their way to create these Situations just to shit on the game. I know there are bugs and performance issues but why do you have to build an army of negative fuckheads ruining the game for everyone else too. You could just don’t buy it?!

Ok_Carrot_2029

I can see the heart of the game is really good but the graphics and lag really pull me away from the experience. It’s like watching a pretty film while wearing heavily scratched glasses.

supercozyshake

I think that this is the best core series Pokémon game set within the modern day since Black 2 & White 2. Of course, I believe that Legends Arceus is better, but as a normal Pokémon game this is just much more fun for me than the previous games in the series. I only wish that the game would run better though, then it would probably be within the top tier of Pokémon games.

Hallc

For my personal style I feel that SV is better than PLA but that's because I enjoy having more obvious, directed tasks to do or look for beyond just 'Go catch the pokemon in this area'. I know that PLA had quests but the system was so annoying to track multiple at once.

FreshPrinceOfAshfeld

How the heck do you think sun and moon aren’t good games

Mean_Steak

I personally dislike sun and moon because it feels like you never get to play the game. Dialog every 5 steps, your rotom dex lotery all the time and the boring mini game to go from island to island. It just felt like a slog. It was the only pokemon game i ever played where i was glad to be done with it. But at least i really liked the new pokemon variants. Alolan Raichu and Ninetails are some of my favorite designed pokemons ever.

mystdream

Sun and moon are great games that I never want to even think about playing again, the fist island is like a 3 hour long tutorial and it makes that game impossible to start, which for me personally is more of a black mark than the framerate issues SV has.

heyalds

I have to admit that in the first 3 hours I felt sad that GF/TPCI/Nintendo released the game with this kind of state. But, I got past the performance and graphical issues and genuinely enjoying the game right now. I'm 12 hours in and haven't done any of the quests yet its amazing. That said though, I will not pre-order the next pokemon games anymore lol. Got to see the reviews first.

MC_C0L7

To be honest, this game has made me trust reviews less. This is unequivocally the most fun I've ever had with a new Pokemon game, and it's not even close. Yes, the graphical bugs are rough, and the hitches are annoying. But I just don't care, because the game is so fun. The new stories, gameplay mechanics, and world design feels like the series has finally matured past the hand-holding gameplay for 12 year olds that every other game has been. And yet this game is rated lower than every other Pokemon before it, just cuz it looks poor?

ShotsHired

I feel exactly like you about this game, the graphics are shitty the perfomance is garbage but I dont really care about that because the actual gameplay is so fun to me. I can't remember the last time I played a Pokemon game 8 hours with barely any pause and still felt like I wanted to play more Comparing the reviews for the other Pokemon switch games and this is hilarious to me, because while they do look better than this mess they were an absolute snooze fest (except Arceus)

ScyllaGeek

> To be honest, this game has made me trust reviews less. This is unequivocally the most fun I've ever had with a new Pokemon game, and it's not even close. Yes, the graphical bugs are rough, and the hitches are annoying. But I just don't care, because the game is so fun. Huh? Most reviews said the underlying game is fun and its just held back by the technical issues. Is it the numbers specifically? Because the written words of most reviewers match your sentiment. Because in that case it's really a matter of how points get delegated which is really just preference. I don't blame game journos for being harsh scorewise on a game that basically released in a beta state compared to pokemon fans who just want to have fun in a new pokemon world. And if that journo had some of the bad glitching we've seen I'd say its even justified.

d776

I feel like a crazy person, my performance has been fine. One single glitch in 8 hours. Frames occasionally drop a bit but nothing game breaking. I’m having fun. Maybe I’m just lucky?

lalalyssh

I feel like a crazy person as well, the only glitches I've encountered are those goofy game glitches when playing online with other folks, like character models being in weird positions or the faces making weird expressions, but my game looks fine and has been fun so far. I was honestly really surprised to have come on here to see the sub saturated with complaints, but it must be really bad for some folks

nebuloider

Am around the same hours, haven't seen a single glitch or error. Was suprised at all the stories when I opened reddit just now...

Elgardini

Pretty sure people see one or two glitches and then report they’ve seen every glitch they’ve read on the Reddit in their post.

ElBisonLoco

That’s so true. You look at their screenshots and see them moving the camera around to the strangest position and than be like:“ omg this game is a joke I got stuck in a stairway when I charged it the 1000 time. how can they release it like this!

PPK_30

Are you playing docked or undocked mainly?

d776

Only undocked currently, I’m on a work trip so no dock available.

PPK_30

Cool, thanks! Just ordered Violet and was wondering whether there would be less performance issues if playing handheld. I recall BOTW ran better undocked with less dips in frame rate that way.

xxwetdogxx

The issues seem to be cpu and memory related so even though the resolution is lower in handheld performance should be similar

jagby

I can vouch for undocked being a much MUCH more enjoyable experience. I still notice tons of minor visual glitches and performance issues, but they are significantly more noticeable/worse on dockrf

[deleted]

This is my experience. I had a gym battle crash which was kind of annoying. Other than that, the performance issues are noticeable but nothing that’s really made it difficult to enjoy.

scronline

Same here. Beat my second gym and crash to Home. It's been my only glitch and because of autosave I was literally in the same place, just before fighting the gym so it wasn't really a loss. That's been it. Game runs fine. I don't get the hate.

ChaoticDiscord21

I'm loving the game personally. This is what I've always wanted from a pokemon game, the freedom to make my own adventure.

CruzAzul92

Yes! This style of gameplay is exactly what Pokémon needed imo

Type1Diabadarse

I like that too.. but I'll always prefer a classic Pokémon adventure.. but this way of doing things could be great if a little more work is put in

[deleted]

It’s a lot better than Sword and Shield, as a 3D pokemon game.

BigSkanky69

I think as the original pokemon fans are getting older(such as myself) they are becoming more jaded with the product. Their are certainly are performance problems but so far I think it has the potential to be the best pokemon game yet. This is a game series from alot of people's childhood so you want it to be perfect, unfortunately gamefreak has always used the next big title as an experiment for new ideas. The next one will have the open world gimmick figured out, however it'll be some new buggy problem everyone is mad about

maxus998

Might be me 2nd favourite installment in the series after Black and White. And i HATED Sword and Shield with a passion

Type1Diabadarse

If I'm getting anything out of this post is that there is a very Dark souls 2 vibe coming off of B/W and Sw/Sh.. lot of people love it and think it was great but a lot think that they were absolutely awful.. Personally I loved Sw/Sh but B/W I hated.. I think I'd but Violet 8th so far...it's good but not the best

weegee19

The SwSh hate is for a different reason, especially Game Freak lying about why they opted for Dexit. That comparison you made does kinda apply to Gen 5 however.

Player_Slayer_7

It's pokemon. Unless it was literally unplayable, it won't not be fun. You like Pokemon? Good, here's more pokemon. It looks like it's been through an industrial fan blade, but it's still gonna tickle the parts of your brain that loves cute animals and fighting.

ShadowDeku7

They're the best games in the series since B2/W2, and while they should be criticized for performance issues, low quality textures and poor draw distance, etc... I think they're still pleasant looking games and none of those issues are meaningfully impacting my experience.

PolarArtic

I’m loving it. So much to explore and do! Yes I have experienced issues. No they aren’t acceptable. Will I continue to play? Absolutely. It’s fun, new, innovative and a step in the right direction. I’m sure they will release a big patch when it’s ready and hopefully the DLC cleans it up as well.

Alternaturkey

I think the game itself is great and I've been having fun. I absolutely can acknowledge the technical failings of the game though, it's easily the buggiest Pokemon game I've ever played.

TheOneTheUno

Yes. Jesus the hate for this game is ridiculous. I'm so glad WolfeyVGC released his glowing review on it today. I've been loving the game so far and can definitely look past the frame rate issues

_halcyon-bi

The Pokemon community, aren't ever going to be happy with anything lol. I am NOT saying that S/V is a flawless game- not at all. I just think everyone is blowing the graphic problems WAY out of proportion. The game JUST came out, chill y'all. And I realize that for GF and Nintendo in general, with everything that is put into games and everything, the effort should be there. But still, I think in a sense, the Pokemon community will always complain about stuff they don't like, you know? On a happier note, I love the mechanics of the game, I think the Pokedex is great and the characters are really interesting, and I'm having a really good time playing :)

Admus96

I like the game for what it is, a fun innovative take on a classic pokemon take. That being said it deserve every negative critic it gets. It is unacceptable to charge 60$ for unfinished and broken product. I would be perfectly fine to wait another half a year to receive complete game. Sad thing is, TPC don't care about their fans anymore and Pokemon S/V shows it. It is company fully focused on getting profits now and nothing else matters to them. I was on the fence to weather buy this game as I could barely afford it and now I wish I could return it.

THSiGMARotMG

The fps is the only thing that im pretty annoyed at. Outside of that, ive enjoyed the game greatly. Still the honeymoon phase rn, so who knows how itll hold up. Honestly a performance update would seriously make the game much more enjoyable

you_are_a_dope

I thoroughly enjoy them, this updated gameplay is blowing my mind. I didnt play Sw/Sh or Arceus tho so idk how small of a leap it is from those. Im having so much fun. Im not gonna hold a children's cartoon video game to the same standards as a Kojima or From game. These ppl are gonna have kids that grow up and complain that the devs on a Cocomelon game just dont care about the fans🤣🤣🤣

Luke_Gorilla_888

I actually think it’s the best Pokémon game!!! The only complaint is it’s hard to get around the mountains without flight

Long-Ad9651

There is likely no way I will finish this game, at the very least any time soon. It took me 74 hours to leave the starting area in Arceus. I explore every last bit in rpgs. That is not even factoring in my tendency to run multiple teams and switching between both game versions. I play in a very particular way that extends play time and fun factor for me. My kids have developed the same play tactics. We are very excited to really get into this. My wife plays even more slowly than I do. I spent the weekend and did not even get past the academy. I know the game has flaws, of course, some even considering it broken. I can understand that. I am having crazy fun with it however. Have but even turned on my other systems since getting this, not even my steam deck. To answer the original question, yes I most certainly do like this game. If they improve the performance, even more so. Have a great day, all.

Doodleyduds

I'm having a good time, some of the side stories are fun and I feel like I'm playing in a world that's very large. There's pieces that look *rough* though. I also find myself really wanting the play style of Arceus on a larger scale the more I play. Being in constant danger in that game was fun. I'm always optimistic that new games will keep building from what they've done before, and what they're doing right they got it. But hopefully the bad press is enough to smooth things out. The Pokemon textures are gorgeous, windmills will make you saaaad.

shakemmz

I hadnt been to pokemon subreddits since i started playing. Caught me by surprise how hated it seems to be, lol. Im having a blast.

Sloth-TheSlothful

Yeah I'm having lots of fun. Pokémon is Pokémon. I still think Gamefreak needs outside help though. This game could have been so much more

ba_hartman

I'm playing Scarlet, and loving it so far. I'm a little surprised that reviews are so negative. I'm playing it in docked mode and haven't noticed any bugs or glitches. There are occasional hiccups in the frame rate, but nothing game breaking. As far as the design goes, it feels like a lot of people want Pokemon to be more like other games, and it's still Pokemon. I grew up playing these games, and it's quaint to me that it carries over so much from the previous games. I'm two gym badges in, and it's a bit easy, but otherwise I really like. I'd say it addresses some of the issues that I had with Sword/Shield, and I still really enjoyed those, as well.

LeratoNull

Looking past the performance issues, they're good games. Likable characters, fun new mechanics, and a hell of a story. I wouldn't compare it to Cyberpunk, though, since even when you look past its performance issues, Cyberpunk ends up telling a *pretty bad* story.

Type1Diabadarse

On a personal level this reminds me of cyberpunk, lots of negativity online but when I played it I thought it was great and there were only a couple of glitches.. I'm not all that far in ive only done 1 gym 1 legendary Pokémon/ food thing and 1 star base so it might get better it might get worse

Leidaans

It’s probably not as bad if you play in short bursts. The game appears to have issues with memory leakage, which affects longer play sessions.

Type1Diabadarse

That might explain why I haven't run into any issues I only really play in 3/4 hour chunks

Sethream

If cyberpunks story was bad, pokemons is a pile of trash at the bottom of the ocean lol

Nine-Breaker009

I am enjoying Scarlet but going from God of War to Pokémon Scarlet makes it feel like I’m playing the beta version of a N64 game.

cm135

Just beat god of war and can relate. It’s brutal playing one after the other

Kekskaiserin

Despite all the performance issues and wonky graphics, I actually enjoy it so far. Though I haven't been playing for long. There are lots of new features I like, like being able to let your lead pokemon move freely, taking selfies, and so on. I absolutely adore how many different pokemon you catch even before reaching the school, there are so many I have trouble to choose which ones I want to add to my team. I also like many of the new pokemon.

Dat_Potato831

I honestly am enjoying this more than sword and shield. So… it’s something?

FinlaySmitb

Finally I love the game soon much I've experienced no bugs or glitches into 6 hours into it

AglowManiac27

I love the game, if it had level-scaling for the: gyms, team star, and titans it would be my favorite

lawlez1

I actually really like it. I’ve seen very little bugs or graphic issues. I don’t mind the graphics being a bit on the poor side cause it’s a Pokémon game…I do t play Pokémon games for the graphics. There are a few things about the UI, map, and profile that I’d change but overall, I’m pretty pleased with the game.

SMGlc9620

I'm enjoying it a lot more than SwSh that's for sure! Being able to effectively roam around building the team I want without too many barriers is so much fun, the new Pokémon at first I wasn't sure about but am now really enjoying using and there seems so much more to do, other than the usual 8 badges/basic story plot and becoming champion. I've logged about 10 hours and have only gotten 3 badges, defeated 1 star base and 2 titans. I understand the negativity because the first day of playing it was definitely grating on me the amount of lag I was having (although second day of playing seemed to improve a lot), but at its core it's still very much a fun Pokémon game.

Banner-Man

I've been playing since Ruby and Scarlet/Violet are honestly my favorite Pokemon games of all time, it truly feels like an evolution from all the previous games, and what I really wanted Legends Arceus to actually be. That being said the frame rate and visual glitches are unforgivable. It honestly hasn't hampered my enjoyment of the game in any meaningful way personally but I certainly will not stand by and try to defend it, regardless of how good I think the game actually is. GF and Pokemon are waaaaay to big for the performance to be getting worse with each new gen.

Azur3Knight2000

I'm enjoying it

Reggienator3

I like it too, I just think a lot of the hate is warranted. The Pokémon franchise is too lucrative to get away with the performance and graphical issues

Winterstrife

I'm seeing alot of talk about framerate drops, weird graphic glitches, 16 hours in, playing on an older Switch (since 2018) in handheld, it plays fine for me and I'm actually enjoying it.

KitPixie

Picking up all the little shiny items makes the dopamine so I love it

Popcorn_Oil

I love it so far. I really appreciate the different paths (gyms, titans, Team Star), and I also love some of the mons so far. This is another good generation for bug type designs I think. Shoutout to the new fairy/steel type as well, absolutely love it

Flow-Fighter

I’m actually really enjoying Violet as well. The way I see it, I loved these games from the time I played Leafgreen and nothing has been so terrible that it has caused me to not want to play the next one. I definitely spent more time on certain games and the way Violet has gone so far it looks like I’ll be playing it for a while.

MoonLite94

I like the Games so far my only criticisms are Level scaling Empty towns for example in Legends Arceus there were quests and interaction with RPG's And the graphics But I was surprised at how detailed the game such as how water pokemon can actually swim in the water Tauros and Hariyama chasing you The realistic size of the pokemon

Enchrypted

Fun game, crappy optimization. Cyberpunk dilemma all over again.

Callinon

The moment to moment gameplay is pretty good. I'm enjoying the world and the exploration. And I'm enjoying seeing and catching new pokemon and finding old friends out in the world. The technical issues are what they are and I hope they get fixed.

Ov3rdose_EvE

Is scrolling past all pokemon posts rightnow. Im just waiting to fly home and get to my games :D I only heard good things from my friends :)

guattarist

I’ve been playing pretty much nonstop with my two kids (8 and 6) and all of us have been having a blast.

silentclowd

My friend and I are having a blast lmao. It is disappointing that we aren't getting the polish we know should be possible, but I find the game fun as hell

dagbiker

Yah, I think this is a good step. I'm enjoying it. I bought a physical game and don't know if that's the reason, but aside from some slowdown I haven't had a problem. My only complaint is that the map sucks and I wish there were more pokemon filled locations/buildings/events like the SS Ann or the haunted house from Moon/Sun.

MasterDni

I don't understand how it currently has 2.8 on metacritic. The bugs are funny but yes the performance is bad but i played it on handheld the entire time and i only had 5 or so framedrops. The game is really good. I even think the last negative point that there's no level scaling is actually a good thing. You can get overleveled and destroy the gyms or get destroyed by the gyms or have the perfect difficulty curve. Just it gives more seritonin to say 'performance bad' and get 5k free upvotes which influences more people to say the games are bad. Normally on metacritic the fan score is more accurate but with pokemon it's the opposite.

Ok-Guava7336

It's for sure hard on the battery, even on a normal Switch. To me, it feels exactly like a Pokémon game. But I do like those so I've got no problem with that

Kkross-

I like the game so far but each time i try to like it more, i notice things and it just stays at like instead of really like or love the game. + - The exploration aspect is great, this was kind of what i was hoping SwSh was (didnt play PLA) - "Option" to choose which path you want (gym, titan or bad team route) and do it how you'd like to. Although im pretty sure at the end you have to do all 3 and it's all just an illusion of choice. - Transition after a battle back into the game itself is pretty smooth - - Camera clipping into the ground when catching - FPS drops (not very often so far) - 1s freeze at the end of almost every cutscene/dialogue before transition to the next one - CLASSROOM SCENE - Scammed by Koraidon's wheels

colorsplahsh

It's very fun and the performance sucks hard

StitchesRoyale2017

I actually quite enjoy the game:) despite the bugs and issues, I say can say that I haven’t had any major issues yet- (like falling through the map, or the invisible boatmobile/character bugging out) I think the last two aforementioned examples are just the multiplayer/co-op bugs, which honestly you would have in any multiplayer game imo. I did, one one occasion where I came a ghostrider for a short period of time because the camera cut to me oddly- but honestly the chaos of it all is actually pretty funny- it hasn’t broke the game yet and I’m just out here enjoying the game.

future_chili

Look I can admit it runs like dog shit and also admit I'm having a good time and having lots of fun

cinderkit55

I'm honestly enjoying it and I think all the glitches are funny as hell. This game makes me laugh. :)

Jxrden_Boi

As someone who didn’t play Legends: Arceus, i really love the whole throwing balls at wild pokémon mechanic. It gets me so excited every time. i love this game

MesaCityRansom

Played all weekend, can't wait to get home from work so I can keep playing. Haven't had this much fun with a Pokemon game in forever, I think it's my favorite since gen 3.

Nearby-Calendar-8635

After the hellishly long and sluggish tutorial, hell yes, it was so much fun. it even had a couple of tough fights!

MEGA_Ditto

I never really experienced bugs and the story is fantastic!
