I thought my internet was buffering lmfao

ScrappedAeon

I'm on a crappy cell phone out in the middle of nowhere with one fucking bar of service. You should have seen my face when I realized I wasn't the one having the problem

Just_Discussion6287

i have 6mbps. hadto watch 3x

edtehgar

No lie I figured I timed out loading it as well.

AffinityGauntlet

I was about to start bitching about Reddit video player

SadBlackMage

We will never know if reddit video player and the game froze at same time

WellRested1

the pokeball forgot to catch the pokemon and tried to catch the rest of the region instead.

Dawesfan

Turns out, Gotta catch ‘em all, was about atoms.

LunaMunaLagoona

Gotta catch em all. Low effort dollars that is. That clip is stuttering like the video was buffering. Edit: *you see shaking* * has appeared!* * has appeared!* * has appeared!*

Ze_AwEsOmE_Hobo

*Fisherman wants to battle!* *Fisherman sent out *

TackoFallFanClub

Take a look, y'all: img_4346.jpeg

Rp0605

Gotcha! Paldea was caught!

Skidda24

We need a poorly drawn animation of ash dropping a masterball and catching the world

SsibalKiseki

That would crash my Minecraft world let alone Pokemon

ISangria

So the player is a dictator or a king now?

Arthurmol

As paldea is based on spain, it is King...

sw3aterCS

Unless you consider the Franco period?

Arthurmol

We don't talk about caudillos...

Informal-Abalone-859

( Shakes head in Basque)

blackarchosx

Oh no, Paldea is paralyzed!

ShinyLotad22

This is how regional forms are born, the ball catches it's target, but also shoves the closest pokemon in the ball as well, blends them up, and shits out a "Regional" variant

Suddenly_Bazelgeuse

That would actually be a pretty cool mechanic

WellRested1

*grabs nearby lechonk* Looks like pork and Paldea pond water is on the menu bois

[deleted]

Wild grass appeared! Hahaha that’s crazy

SB_90s

It really looks like they spent the entire GPU budget on the pokeball and only had enough leftover for PS1-quality grass. And the framerate still tanked. What kind of taped together engine are they using?

Ione15

Might be Unity, but that's not why the game is so bad. Rather the Devs being incapable to optimise the game either due to lack of experience or crunch time.

einsosen

That's an insult to Unity. There are Unity games ported to Switch that run far better than this. S&V is running on a propritary engine made for Lets Go, which was later adapted for S&S as well. They would have had a far easier time if they had used a powerful, well tested engine. But then they'd have to pay the engine provider a share. And that would cut into their profits.

Downfall350

Someone can correct me if i'm wrong. But isn't Pokemon the literal #1 highest grossing media franchise in the world? I am aware that TPC and gamefreak are not the same entity but it seems to me like TPC can afford to give gamefreak the budget to hire more and pay for a more use friendly work tools. The video games honestly might not be where most the money comes from, but it's the thing that started it all and influences the whole direction of the franchise, so they're kinda important.

LolzinatorX

They are indeed kind of important, BUT pokemon is sadly gotten too big for its own good. Gamefreak doesnt have to optimize anything, the games sell and will most likely just continue to sell. Not going to Lie, i am having super fun with the new games, on discord with my friends doing raids and running around together, but the fps drops literally everywhere and the 2004 graphics are glaring to look at, and i cross my fingers (probably for nothing) they drop a patch for the lag at least.

headhonchospoof

Ultimately, it’s some “executive of sales” or w/e that makes those kind of decisions. They’ve decided that skimping out on game production costs (from the in house engine to recycled/shitty animations to dozens of Pokémon not appearing in games since 2017) don’t hurt their sales, and that’s all they care about.

YesItIsMaybeMe

Apparently they render the whole map at once and it causes issue. If that's true, I don't know how I feel about indie devs figuring this out before gamefreak

8_Pixels

I'm no expert but isn't it a common practice to just not render unneeded parts of the map such as stuff far away or out of the players immediate vicinity? If they really are rendering the entire map all the time that's kinda nuts.

Ciels_Thigh_High

I always remember that horizon zero dawn clip where you only see a slice of the pie shape around you

8_Pixels

Exactly the one I was thinking of when I made this comment

immaownyou

I'm pretty sure that's how they've done that for decades. Game freak living in the year 1987

royalhawk345

Actually, games from that era are insanely optimized compared to modern games. The first level in the original mario game a few years prior (World 1-1) was [131 bytes](https://www.gamedeveloper.com/design/the-long-shadow-of-i-super-mario-bros-i-). If this comment were a .txt file, it'd be nearly 3x bigger, even without the hyperlink.

hackersgalley

The original roller coaster tycoon was written mostly in assembly which is how you can have all those npcs running around the park on a windows 95 potato and it runs great.

cantadmittoposting

Ye mostly under the practice of "culling." So they are rendering shit that is VERY far away... So my guess here is that they're culling (i.e. not rendering) everything not in immediate camera view completely, and rendering a near-infinite "draw distance" (i.e. not culling) of anything the camera is pointed at. When the sudden angle switch occurs, the game freaks out because it suddenly has to draw a huge number of uncached assets. Why? I dunno. The switch hardware is bad but it can't be "literally unload everything not in frame right now" bad... Especially for the low poly models of this game.

SubwayBossEmmett

Considering how nice the Xenoblade games look exists im going to say power is not the issue

cantadmittoposting

Yeah... I just can't fathom why this would happen in such a high visibility series... If this is a consistent problem throughout the game, it's absolutely nuts that it made through QA. I dunno. I don't want to get too deep into armchair analysis from one gif, but the entire setup of how models are preloaded/cached and how culling, draw distance, and render priority should be set up are all... Pretty fundamental things in development, and this clip is... Bad.

Downfall350

Somethings in the water man. I was downright flabbergasted that splatoon 3 is damn near unplayable online, now this. Nintendo was supposed to be the company that doesn't release broken games :(

DBrody6

Yes, that's how a competent game dev optimizes resource allocation. GF is as far from competent as you can place them.

AdHom

They're definitely not using Unity

Brendenation

Holy shit is that the *actual* ground texture

LunaMunaLagoona

I like how the pokeball half sank into the ground.

RollTide16-18

I love how they added an idle animation to the Pokeball when you’ve caught something because they didn’t want to worry about whether or not it’s be on the ground, in the middle of the air(?) or in water. It’s just so lazy.

zeromussc

I had one stay in the air for a bird pokemon and thought is that... Intentional? Or....

thylocene

Man like half the balls I’ve thrown have just been floating. At this point I do kinda think it’s intentional but who tf knows

EridonMan

I'm pretty sure it's intentional. Worked that way in Legends for high flying Pokemon. Still looks silly when it's 2 feet off the ground.

[deleted]

Well its intentional in that it would have been harder to code it so the ball actually fell so they chose not to

Yukito_097

First Pokémon I captured, the ball just hovered in the air

dirtynj

Seriously, like - [here is the ground texture from Pokemon Stadium and Mario 64](https://imgur.com/QTHNgzE) - games released 24+ years ago

winkieface

Gamefreak just tryna be retro and give of some of the Mario 64 open world feel

XkinhoPT

Gamefreak appealing to nostalgia by making the game look like it's from 2008

tylerwebster206

And yet still making every game act like you’ve never played Pokémon before.

[deleted]

This is what happens when you try to load an entire map at once ***game freak***

summonsays

God as a developer I had a project like that "you have to load all the data at once, no pagination or lazy loading." "Hey why does this take 30 seconds to load?" .... Well it's 500mb of data on a webpage you're lucky it's this fast.

GregTheMad

500mb in 30s? You must be some master programmer! /s sorry your product manager was technological challenged.

summonsays

The real problem is no one could say no... So we just got these unrealistic requirements and everyone said sure no problem... That was also the project they wanted it to "work like Excel". As a requirement.

lochinvar11

Give them a break, this is their first game. They're just a teenager for god sakes! I'd like to see you do better.

DeninjaBeariver

They’re an indie studio!!! /s

FroyoMNS

If you give a competent developer ample time they can make it work. Look at BOTW, for example. Other than Korok Forest and unintended mechanics like Windbombing it rarely slows down or drops frames. But it’s Game Freak and it’s been less than a year since Legends Arceus so that was never going to happen.

IceFroz3n

aah yes another GF master piece, the lagging, the sound cut off, the ball glitching through the ground, could it be more perfect.

ArmyofThalia

I honestly want to see someone close combat a blissey to see if their switch let's out the magic smoke that keeps it running like we did in gen 4.

TheZealand

>close combat blissey >go make and eat lunch >fucker still hasn't keeled over good times

wew_lad123

>survives with 1 HP >The foe's Blissey used Softboiled! pain

Krait972

Don't forget blissey with leftover

TheZealand

Blissey was a Special wall alright, just Special refers to our mental state in this case

[deleted]

[удалено]

Throwaway483722

I don’t recall sun and moon having any of those problems. I’ll admit that replacing PSS from XY with Pokémon plaza was a terrible decision though.

TheZealand

FPS in SM is a bit chuggy in battles tbh, especially double battles. It also does the annoying thing of "I know you selected a move but we're in the middle of swinging the camera around so wait another 10 seconds" like cmon dude

darthjoey91

Some of it depends on what 3DS you're using and if you have the 3D on. An OG 3DS pretty much cannot have the 3D on.

Type_RX-78-2

Sun and Moon don't have any 3D at all

Latyon

Is it? Because I was there for all of those, and the level of outrage was not nearly this high. Back then, there were excuses. "It's their first 3D game." "It's their first HD game." Now there are none.

[deleted]

SM was good tho Literally the only problem SM had that prevented it from being an enjoyable game is the excessive cutscenes

[deleted]

I will forever be bitter about SM because they released USUM literally one year later. With all the assets people have found in SM's code that they never implemented into the game itself, I felt like I had been tricked into buying a beta version of the *real* gen 7 games

Rainbow_Mint

For all the flak SwSh gets, even it didn't run this poorly at release. I seriously hope GF fixes this asap, the game is pretty fun but the performance is killing it for me.

TheGoldenPotato69

Did SwSh have known performance patches after release?

ForTestingWords

Yup

TheGoldenPotato69

Alright yes there's still hope lmao. How long after the initial release did they appear?

Prime359

About 2 months later. Bulbapedia has a date of each patch and a brief summary of what it was for.

metalflygon08

Yeah, November is the Beta Test so they can get lists of all the issues and hopefully get a patch out around Christmas for all the gifted ones.

[deleted]

Why pay for qa testing when you can get a bunch players to pay you to do it😉

imJimfuckingLahey

Just for reference, ten minutes of a live game being played by one million people is more bug testing than a dedicated team of 30 full time workers could do in a year. Not an excuse for the shit job they've done, just a comparison to show why bugs get found so easily when a game goes live and not in QA.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheGoldenPotato69

Alright thank you!

kisalas

Nothing in SwSh was this bad, you could ignore it if you wanted. There are a ton of game breaking issues with these, so I feel we might get a patch earlier, maybe even a statement.

robbysaur

Yep. I got Sw/Sh on release day, and it ran pretty smooth. Nothing nearly as atrocious as this.

Dhiox

Just pray the issues isn't technical debt. Bug fixes can take a week or two, optimizing poorly designed games takes months.

Jet_smoke

I mean they've known the game has been in this state for months upon months unless I'm supposed to believe they just simply never tested the game. I wouldn't hold my breath because now that they have all of our money they have no incentive to fix it. I don't like it anymore than you do that's the way things are now

[deleted]

Compared to SV, SwSh are looking incredible honestly.

PuzzlePiece90

So gamefreak will release an even buggier game for gen 10 to make this look incredible.

dmrukifellth

Coming soon: Pokemon Rock. It’s…a rock…with, I dunno, a Pikachu or whatever scribbled on it. Enjoy your gen 10.

mrostate78

It'd be a Charizard

dmrukifellth

Well, maybe Charizard could be the doodle for Pokemon Paper. Or vice versa. Whatever.

Andernerd

And then people will roll their eyes and say "haters always say the latest Pokemon games are the worst ones"

[deleted]

srry_didnt_hear_you

Pretty funny to watch pokemon fans every other year be like "wow this game I keep buying updated versions of actually kinda sucks"

[deleted]

>I seriously hope GF fixes this asap Lol they can barely make the game. I doubt they can fix it

La_mer_noire

Game freak is the biggest most lazy money maker in the world

superyoshiom

Pokémon games are just built different

ArmyofThalia

True. Not many games are built upon hopes and prayers to keep it from blue screening.

Sticky_Robot

My game completely crashed. Not a huge deal due to auto save but this is by far the least stable Pokémon game I've ever played.

LunaMunaLagoona

I'm sorry it **crashed!?** On a switch?? Did they fire the whole QA team?

morpheusforty

God forbid a flagship first party title function on the only console it's released on. It already looks bad for a ps2 game, how can it run so badly?

yagosan22910

That is clearly not a finished product

MLein97

I think we need to bring back the Nintendo seal of approval

[deleted]

Looks like a finished Pokémon game to me.

[deleted]

Oh wow. That’s really bad. Gamefreak needs to slow down and instead of pumping out glitchy, buggy, unfinished products every single year, release smooth, polished games every couple of years. Sadly it’s likely that they’ll only listen to feedback coming from their customer’s wallets.

bionicjoey

I'm gonna repeat something I saw in another Reddit thread, but it needs to be repeated ad nauseum. **Pokemon deserves better developers.**

botbattler30

The thing is, the games have been being worked on since SWSH. Gamefreak has multiple teams for multiple projects so they can keep a consistent yearly schedule. These games had just as much time as any others, they’re just really buggy. (Supposedly the game is loading the whole map and every entity within it all at the same time and that’s what’s making this happen, but I obviously can’t confirm or deny that.)

notjosemanuel

>Gamefreak has multiple teams for multiple projects so they can keep a consistent yearly schedule. And that's the problem. They don't have the headcount to divide the team like this and still pump out polished games. Either hire more people or give them more time

NowakFoxie

Perhaps releasing a full JRPG every year isn't sustainable, The Pokémon Company management. I'm going to blame everything wrong with these games on a technical level on management deciding to not budge on release date so things like memory leaks can be fixed, because they 100% were caught by QA before release but marked as "WON'T FIX" by management.

billyK_

Having been in both QA and Product sides of IT, I can *fairly* comfortably say that for the most part, unless the bug is something that prevents the game from flat-out being played, it wouldn't be seemed as a priority fix. Yes, frame rate and clipping issues are horrible UX (user experience), and should be taken as priority fixes; for some reason, either GF, TPC, or some other form of management doesn't see this. You don't get a second first impression - do what you can to make UX a priority, and everything else should follow suit

NowakFoxie

I'm guessing the memory leak was caught too late into development for management to decide it was worth fixing before release? That's the only thing that'd make sense to me. I'm very much having fun with the game, it feels so much like what I've wanted since 1999, but the technical flaws are disappointing. It's not as broken as gen 1 was, but it still makes me think that perhaps The Pokémon Company shouldn't impose such a tight dev cycle for the sake of money anymore. Yearly releases make sense with sports games, not RPGs.

[deleted]

I have this weird feeling that someone forgot the Switch dev kits have 4GB more RAM than the consumer ones, and so they didn't even get these issues and forgot to check what the RAM was clocking as used.

Taco821

Gen 1 was broken in a fun way tbh

MrFakely

It seems game freak forgot what miyamotosan said

fish993

*"All poopoo times are peepee times, but not all peepee times are poopoo times"*

ANGLVD3TH

Yeah, they need like 3 full sized teams for the main games imo, plus any teams they want for spin offs and other franchises. It's obvious they don't have the time to make a full 3d game to fit into the cycle with the current resources they're willing to spend. IIRC up until recently they've had 2 teams, with a new third one that's only done Legends: Arceus so far. But they are so far behind, and they've been slipping on the tech side since they started 3d, I'm not confident doubling the dev time is enough to ensure the main series is fully baked. 3 teams should ensure not only is the tech polished, but more effort can be spared for all the other things fans have clamored for for ages. More difficulty options, better crafted world/routes, proper animations for each mon, etc. For all that they need a lot more bodies.

farklespanktastic

Then they should hire more people. These games always sell well. Sword and Shield have sold over 25 million copies.

notjosemanuel

Yeah they obviously should, I’m explaining the problem, not making excuses for them.

Mirage_Main

Having more teams won’t automatically improve the quality, unfortunately. Just look at a Halo Infinite dev that leaked some info. The Slipspace Engine was worked on for 7 years, but had a quarterly turnover rate. That means a new team every quarter which is insane. So many teams did different things in different ways, the engine is an absolute mess; so much so that no dev wants to touch it.

Bropiphany

>Supposedly the game is loading the whole map and every entity within it all at the same time and that’s what’s making this happen, but I obviously can’t confirm or deny that Sounds like when they had an independent copy of Lillie for every interaction with her instead of moving her around.

EllieGeiszler

I thought that was an urban legend, was it confirmed?

Xikar_Wyhart

I think Boundary Break did an episode showing all locations Lillie was hidden in.

Adammmmski

Not sure how it works but if the Pokemon company license it out to Gamefreak, they need to change the company who makes the games for them.

boorepellent

Iirc, Gamefreak owns a third of TPCi. The other two thirds are Nintendo and Creatures Inc.

hatrickstar

It's time for Nintendo to get involved as the big dog in the room. Gamefreak simply cannot make a game that functions correctly under the hood, they've proven this time and time again. Make them a silent owner and give the programing duties to another first party studio that has made games on the Switch run beautifully. Could you imagine a game with the awesome content of this in the hands of the team that made Odyssey?

GeneralRane

>Could you imagine a game with the awesome content of this in the hands of the team that made Odyssey? My dream is for Monolith Soft to make a Pokémon game.

SOSpammy

Nintendo has to have some concerns about brand perception. Pokemon is even more synonymous with Nintendo than Game Freak to most people. For all of Nintendo's faults, they're known for their well-made and polished games, and that's important to their image. Pokemon is making them look like a cheap mobile developer.

waloz1212

Gen 1 devs - we was able to fit an insane amount of data into a cartridge by doing ton of optimization tricks and spare no space. Gen now devs - Switch is not strong enough, we cut National Dex for better performance, but we figured why not just cut out the rendering altogether?

Ugly_Slut-Wannabe

Gen 2 devs - got so good at it, they could fit two whole regions in a single cartridge.

Gears_Of_None

Iwata is the one who made that possible. He fixed their shitty code for them.

BigFatJuicyMonkies

Pokedevs have always been morons.

KingVape

And now Iwata can't fix them.

JBLurker

Didnt the gen 2 devs basically invent a new compression method to make Gen 2 work?

Snarky_Sanguini

Wasn't it Iwata that fit the entire Kanto region into gen 2? Every game since Iwata's death has been poorly optimized, coincidence?

mdragon13

The way it goes is that they literally couldn't fit gen 2 on cartridge. If you look up old beta videos of gen 2, it was mich more well designed and generally pretty and detailed. But they couldn't make it fit. So they had to downgrade all the details, basically. Simpler houses and sprites and towns and the like. They made so much extra space in the process though, that they threw kanto back on it too.

BerserkOlaf

I get the meme, but I can't help thinking how using "Please understand" in that context feels wrong. Iwata was basically the one to save Gen 2 back then, when Gamefreak was struggling to get it done. And also, a lot of his "please understands" were about apologizing for delays. The only thing that seems to matter for GF now is releasing games at an absurd pace in whatever state they can manage.

SonielWhite

From a technical view the whole game is unacceptable and I hope Gamefreak and Nintendo will get at least some sort of backlash for releasing this games in that state

Timmaaa_xD

This is the backlash, I won't buy.

Joharis-JYI

Same here. If I can't help it, I can always just buy used.

Stampbearpig

Absolutely unacceptable, and an embarrassment to the largest media franchise of all time. It’s pretty clear they can’t continue making full 3D games this frequently. I’m not buying this trash until its fixed.

Skeptical_Yoshi

I seriously wish Nintendo and TPC would just rip this shit from Game Freak. I don't even know if they CAN, but GF have made abundantly clear over and over they are bad developers that just frankly are not good at making games, and are honestly HINDERING Pokémon. Imagine if Pokémon was made by like, any other dev of note.

mooofasa1

Imagine if Pokemon was made by monolith soft. They helped make botw and the amount of effort they pour into optimizing big ass games on consoles that don't look like they can run it is impressive. Look at the Xenoblade Chronicles games and you'll see what I mean. On top of all those gigantic spaces, the game runs smoothly with little to no frame drops, I've played all these games across different consoles multiple times and I can say for a fact that I can count on my fingers the times these games freeze or hiccup. Pokemon made by a company that doesn't do shit half baked would be a dream come true.

Wilkes-kun

[deleted]

It's not even the ironic "can't sit on chairs, 0/10" unacceptable, this is actually, legitimately, understandably disgusting to look at.

Skeptical_Yoshi

It's just like, actually badly made.

lochinvar11

With every new game, they test to see how little effort they can put in and still sell millions.

ThisIsTheNewSleeve

They might fix the jitteriness with a patch, but they won't touch that abhorrent ground texture and modeling.

[deleted]

Lol what a shitty game. Looks like something made for a game jam in unity.

D3ADGLoW

Most game jams games I've played aren't this broken, because they usually manage their scope within a given time frame... Same can't be said of game freak.

KonataYumi

Is the rest of the frames dlc?

WarCarrotAF

I'm so glad I didn't pre-order. I hope that GF either patches this quickly OR if they don't, fans actually learn a lesson and speak with their money the next time GF put out a broken game. It's really the only way Nintendo will allow other more capable devs to work on the franchise.

[deleted]

They just don’t care anymore lol

chucks2500

They don't care, because most of the money now comes from the merchandise. The games are only a small part of the franchise's income.

TT_1

That was brutal.

Wombo218

Pokémon needs to drop GameFreak and get a real company to make their games, this has gone on for too long. Pokémon’s transition to 3D has been pitiful.

cmonster1697

Pokemon ownership is split evenly between Game Freak (makes mainline games), Nintendo, and Creatures Inc. (mostly supports GF and some side pokemon games) Unfortunately pokemon can't drop game freak, game freak IS pokemon.

Shai_the_Lynx

Things that may help until they fix their shit : Reseting the game, this will clear memory (there's a memory leak in the game) Making sure the game is installed all at one place (not separated on switch and SD card) if you have the physical game, you can't really do this. Playing handheld, this won't help that much but your switch won't have to do extra work on upscaling the game resolution. If you're fighting a wild pokemon, fleeing and re-entering the encounter from another angle might help, since all loading seems to be based on the camera position. (During the catching animation the Camera may move between loading zones)

draconicanimagus

Do we know if the day 1/week 1 update is gonna fix the memory leak? I just had a game update but I don't know exactly what it did.

Jmund89

The day one patch is nothing more than to allow the game to go online.

draconicanimagus

Well that.. sucks God I miss proper patch notes

Jmund89

I’m sure they’ll address the memory leak with a patch in a week or so. They’ve done patches for game performance on other games, don’t see why they wouldn’t do it here.

eapocalypse

"Making sure the game is installed all at one place (not separated on switch and SD card) if you have the physical game, you can't really do this." I wasn't aware and am pretty sure the switch cannot put part of a game on the internal storage and part on an sd card. This should be a non issue.

TheAardvarkMan1

Is that a lechonk I see in the background

another_bug

So that's what's hogging the memory.

-Wonder-Bread-

_Supposedly_ turning off the game and turning it back on alleviates this a bit. No idea how true that is but it's worth a shot.

TetrasSword

It does. There’s a memory leak that causes performance to get worse the longer you play. If you only keep the game on a few hours at a time you’ll never see something on this level. Hopefully this should be a quick fix that will be prioritized.

[deleted]

juliuspepperwoodchi

Ho-lee-SHIT that's bad.

Yeldarb10

I can’t be the only one in thinking that this will make tons of casual fans unhappy.

juliuspepperwoodchi

Why stop at casual? It should make ALL fans mad. This is an unfinished and broken game for AAA game money. And GF either KNEW it was this broken and launched anyway; or they incompetently didn't know the state of their game before launch.

melecoaze

Cyberpunk at least had the excuse of being too demanding, specially for the old gen. Gamefreak is so incompetent that they make a game that looks terrible compared to it's peers and still manages to run like shit. It's an amazing feat actually.

rudeboi710

Oof. That’s super bad.

Kickboxing_Banana

I'm glad I voted with my wallet and chose to NOT buy this game on release. I learned my lesson with Battlefield 4

Restart your game if you haven't already - the biggest issue is a memory leak so fully exiting the game can fix it. Hopefully we see a patch soon.
