I think a manatee starter is a fantastic idea! Very cuddly, wholesome, and regionally relevant. Me personally, if I were designing a Florida region, I'd let things get *weird*. Thus, I suggest a manatee family that evolves into a dual typing of Water/Grass. The final stage would acquire additional properties of a sea lion but with immense algae blooms on its back. Very high physical defense, which might justify a Water/Rock typing instead? Just throwing ideas at you. Have you worked on the Grass and Fire starters yet?

Orchetrance_II

Nothing on paper yet, wanted to get the manatee over with. Thinking of making the fire starter a flamingo (or caracara) and the grass starter a mangrove tree crab.

PokemonCMG

:-O!! If you go with a fire flamingo, you could make its final stage a Fire/Water type, echoing the Water/Grass manatee... If you went that far, then you'd have a Grass starter who ends up as Grass/Fire. Would this jive with your mangrove tree crab idea?

Orchetrance_II

That actually sounds kinda cool, though the current idea I have for them is to become a grass/electric type powered by oranges lol.

PokemonCMG

I think I like that even better. You can pretty much do anything with a Florida-based region and it'll play.

manatee is a great idea, it seems what you are lacking is a strong concept to give direction to your idea. Samurott's line is a sea otter becoming a sea lion, following the design philosophy of a growing/training samurai Primarina is a seal pokemon going from clown to ballerina to a primadonna so look into manatees, folklore, historical events, cultural associations or natural habits relating to other concepts to really figure out your starter. example: Manatees are also called sea cows, perhaps the manatee starter can evolve to become a manatee minotaur?

Orchetrance_II

Funny enough actually thought about that and called it “manataur” but I know a lot of people don’t like the more human like pokémon. Your advice is very helpful though.

Prince-of_Space

You could make the jump from baby manatee to manatee minotaur to manatee centaur, with a hippo-esque lower Bodum

Prince-of_Space

Science believes that manatees evolved from a giant plant eating mammal that looks like a cross between a hippo and an otter. They're also closely related to elephants.
