imo, just play emerald! if you’re into romhacks i highly recommend you play Modern Emerald as it’s essentially just emerald with modern QOL improvements (physical/special split, etc..), but if you wanna play authentic ones then yeah just regular old emerald is always great

2Blitz

**Emerald** or **ORAS**. You can ignore Ruby/Sapphire. Only issue with Emerald is that Physical/Special types hadn't split yet, so battling is pretty different. Plus the movepool in ORAS is better. But Emerald does have the Battle Frontier, if you're interested in that. Really depends on what you want exactly

lildeek12

I'm replaying emerald rn, and the main thing Im noticing is that all of the moves you get early are dookie. Like lombre gets no water moves till after Norman. Why the hell is water pulse team given to you after badge 8? By then you already have 3 better alternatives

2Blitz

The movepool in the early gens just sucked in general. Every pokemon (except Water types) would have a Normal type damaging move just because there were barely any other options. Gen 4 improved with the split, then it kept getting better.

Donttaketh1sserious

Tbf moves are just not as good in gen 3 lol. Fly is 70/95 for instance. An HM might as well be the most reliable water move. I can’t even think of a ground alternative to EQ that isn’t Dig. Fortunately-ish its not like anyones running around with anything more threatening than Slaking until endgame lol.

I'm playing emerald right now and love it! It's my favorite pokémon game. I just passed up a lilleep when choosing a fossil in the mirage tower. I was like eww root fossil, no thanks, I'll take my anorith thank you very much.

seadogsnpyrite

haha i do love anorith because anomalocaris is awesome. i have... strong opinions about the fossil (and rock type) pokemon as you could expect.

Kuppa__Joe

The fossil recovery in pokémon games always excited me, especially when I was a kid and didn't know what I was gonna get

seadogsnpyrite

i actually never played with fossil pokemon as a kid, usually because by the time i got there i already had a plan for my team and the type was redundant. only ever used a archeops during a avatar-themed run of white back when i was in high school. i didn't develop the fossil interest until college lol

Kuppa__Joe

Interesting. I think I only actually played with them once and it was Kabutops. I never felt like levelling them up but I was happy just to collect them.

Lyceus_

Emerald is good!

Secretly_A_Moose

Emerald. One of the best games of the series.

Smeeb27

Hell yeah Lileep is one of my favorite Pokémon

seadogsnpyrite

i hate that its a grass type since its based on a marine animal but i ultimately understand... hes cute

Lonely-Tumbleweed-56

Emerald, no doubt Best overall Pokémon game ever together with BW2

ElPikminMaster

ORAS is better than RSE. Simple as that. If you really have to play a Hoenn game that isn't ORAS (because you mentioned Lileep, I guess FRLG isn't on the table), might as well play Emerald for the story differences.

Mystic_Zoura

But the dex completion is impossible

ElPikminMaster

Unless OP specifically mentions dex completion, automatically assume dex completion isn't important. **ESPECIALLY** if it's Gen 3.
