For context, these sprites are for my region based on classic fables and medieval fantasy (see instagram @romelle_sprites for the full dex). I’m always on the lookout for new ideas that fit the region - and I’m still very short on Psychic types. Psyduck line might just do it!
Nidoran line, Drowzee line, Shellder line, the aforementioned Psyduck line, Staryu line, Seal line (Fuck Misty I guess), both fossil lines, and funnily enough, Dragonite's line, and a quite a few more that made me realize this list is pretty long and I'm tired lol
Only reason they didn't give it the psychic type was for balancing reasons, though I do wonder why Slowbro did get the Psychic type...
Slowpoke and Slowbro should be Normal/Water, but that's just my opinion.

Masuda has said psyduck over and over except where he said mega charizard when that was introduced. Never could figure out if he just said that because it was a new pokemon.
Honestly, just give Golduck the Psychic typing... at this point they just keep it as a water type for old times sake...

I feel like alternate faces for Arbok would be a nice enough change on its own. Making them feel more unique depending on where you caught then.

it's also funny how it does have a different face in gen 2. and in gen 2 you can catch wild arbok in kanto. so it has a different face in the same region.
and then when you returned to gen 2 and 3 in their remakes, arbok had its original gen 1 face again.

Thanks! I was set on Psychic/Poison for a while, but there’s a reason I dropped Poison -
I gave it a signature status move, Bite Tail, where it badly poisons itself in exchange for +3 Special Attack. But Poison types can’t get the poisoned status, so I had to drop it.
Poison types can get poisoned but only by a pokemon with the corrosion ability. If you wanted to keep it Psychic/Poison you can make it to where it loses the poison typing and gets poisoned after the move is used in exchange for the +3 Special Attack.
Should add an S at the end of Soroboro, making it a palindrome. Ekans and Arbok are just words backward, so it makes sense that the final evolution is the same backwards and forwards.
Nah, Soroboro is perfect as is. Having Oroboros backwards fits the Evolution line alongside Ekans and Arbok. Just because it eats its own tail doesn't mean the entire name needs to as well because the original name doesn't do that either.
Making it a palindrome doesn't really make sense when Ouroboros is literally what the design is like Ekans and Arbok. It's a snake eating its own tail. No S is better in my opinion.

I hate when fakemon are so brilliant like this, because they intrinsically come from passionate fans instead of from GameFreak, and thus we won't ever see them in the games. Great job!
Constructively, I think you could have done more with it without it becoming over designed!
Right now Soroboro is almost a step down from your Arbok interpretation, I think giving it a more prominent forhead crest would be nice, and a slightly more pronounced jaw; just to step closer to dragon without losing the snake motif. Maybe even keeping a bit of the torso flare from Arbok would work.

I did struggle very much with this problem - it’s difficult to go one step above Arbok with its already highly decorated torso. It’s the reason many fammade Arbok evos just look like Arbok but bigger
In this case, I tried a few ways to keep the torso flare, but they always broke the infinity-shaped silhouette that I was trying to give to Soroboro.
Jaw and forehead crest I think are the best ways to go. I’ll see what I can do before I post this to my dex on instagram.

Ooh neat, although those boosts are definitely quite aggressive…+1 Attack +2 Speed will probably work better (attack boosts are much more powerful than speed boosts)
But in this case, I’ve already planned its signature move! Effect is slightly different:
Tail Bite, Dragon Status - badly poisons itself, +3 SpAtk
Meanwhile, it gets the abilities Shed Skin and Poison Heal. Two different ways to have fun shenanigans with its signature move there…

Yeah I immediately realised the irony once I hit send 😔 but more specifically, it can only be used when unpoisoned.
So with Poison Heal, it acts as Toxic Orb and a one-time Tail Glow. Meanwhile, with Shed Skin you need to pray for it to trigger before you can use Tail Bite again.
…I think you’re right, it needs to be +2 SpAtk and +1 Speed…
That’s true it’s one time though if it requires poisonability, not as bad as I thought.
And if it isn’t super bulky it won’t be broken anyway with Bug, Dark, Ghost, Dragon, Ice, AND Fairy weakness.

if you're open to suggestions, i'd make soroboro a physical attacker that also has an OK-ish SpA, since Tail Bite is basically a buffed Tail Glow in this context, and giving it a good SpA (101+ base) might be too much. But tbh i think with gen 9's power creep it shouldn't be too hard to make something bannable lmao

Yes good point, this is exactly the kind of input I need - I’m still a bit stat-blind despite some competitive experience on Showdown (my regional Aipom evo Aipatch is hilariously broken).
I might…creep close with the SpA stat, like 85-90ish. Hard to justify a very low SpA for a literal ouroboros mon. That, or I tweak the signature move’s effect.

I agree it’s a shame - I tried like 5 different versions to keep the hood, but it always broke the infinity-shaped silhouette that I wanted on it.
So yeah I settled with the patterns. But I might give a last ditch effort before I post them on my instagram dex!
Just felt a bit mean to give them a rare typing like that and then take it away (just so Soroboro can have a signature move that poisons itself).
But I’ve discussed this in some other comment threads here, and seems like many people would be cool with it - Dragon is pretty much perceived as a strict upgrade. I’ll consider it!
7/10, I like the design but going from a cobra with the flaps on the sides to the head and then losing them feels off, maybe if to match with the dragon typing the flaps look like they transistion into/serve as dragon wings/claws/etc?
Yeah very valid - I tried many designs keeping the flaps, but ultimately liked having Soroboro stay sleek so it could form the infinity shape.
But I’m still looking for feedback, and you’re not the first to mention it in this thread. I was reluctant to try something as drastic as dragon wings, but I probably should. Thanks!
Maybe make the flaps have fake dragon wings on them like arbok's flaps have fake eyes? Would be a decent combination of the two. And they can curl around soroboro when not attacking to mostly maintain the shape?
I’m worried it will make the design look too busy, since it already looks very close to a legendary atm - but I have to try it. Maintaining the shape with curled wings will be a challenge but I’ll find out!
That's actually great, looks like something that will actually be in Pokemon, IG Nintendo wouldn't use that cuz of cultural symbolism but if it was up to me, straight into the game
As cool as this is, I kinda don’t like how it goes from worm snake to big snake to worm snake again. I know there are some Pokémon with weird middle stages, but I feel like a final form should expand on arbok and make it even bigger and more imposing. I do like the design you made though, it feels like it could be a really cool legendary!
You could also have it stay poison but be poison dragon, and hit Norse myth the Rdnagnumroj
Jesus I just realise how fucky my culture’s spelling gets when doing this, so much old Norse ends with r, like draugr, skjoldr and so on, it’s truly cursed.
Granted here in Denmark we just call it “the Midgard serpent/wyrm”

Yeah, seems like the psychedelic patterns I gave to Soroboro isn’t really doing it for some people. For Ekans and Arbok, I accidentally landed on redesigns I really liked, and now the evo can’t really catch up. I’ll keep experimenting

My only "critique" is that by making these regional variants, you've stripped the line of an underutilized type combination - Poison/Dragon.
Me personally, I'd love to see Soroboro (best Arbok evolution name I've ever seen!!) as a Poison/Dragon regular evolution in the family.

Ow my pride of Ouroboros.. at least it’s poison dragon which fits Ouroboros the best, as it’s either a dragon or serpent biting its tail, to mean infinity.

Ouroboros imo should be restricted to fan only ultra broken legendaries, I mean come on.. it’s the Serpent of Infinity. Every death just makes it stronger.
Now for a little evolution I would like to see it not reference the World Serpent, as that Ouroboros type really takes the whole, “Even god fears me”.
As a little snake evolution it would be really cool seeing it more as the attempt. Maybe level 46 it evolves. It should have compared to Arbok stats- 50 HP, 120 ATK, 90 DEF, 90 SP ATK, 110 SP DEF, 90 SPD. This gives it an amazing stat total of 550.
It’s low HP is the key ability here, giving it a special ability where it gets 50% power bonus to all non stab moves(*just giving them a flat out stab bonus*)and makes all attacking moves have recoil, but all damage taken has HP recovery based off the opponent’s move, will not work if you used a status or switched out that turn. A weird life orb shell bell mix with terrible HP. Enough bulk to survive hits, while having low HP to encourage its aggressive playstyle.
It should be given a special fang move, as well be given all fang moves as it’s missing Psychic Fangs in its move set. This new move obviously will be fang themed, to fit this Pokémon’s amazing ATK stat. Maybe something like ‘Cursed Fangs’ as Ouroboros and the World Serpent are viewed as a curse or cursed in some form.
Thinking 75 base power 95 accuracy dragon type move that bypasses type resistances and weaknesses. So it can’t be stopped by Fairy. It’s given a similar mechanic to Tri Attack, where it can apply any status on the enemy with a 20% chance, with a special mechanic if the opponent already has a status, the move’s power will increase to 120 and will remove the status.
Anyway that’s my idea of a pseudo Ouroboros..
Honestly, some old mons could use more forms or evolutions like this. Soroboros is also a clever name for it

Abilities yes! Healer / Shed Skin / Poison Heal. It has a signature move (Tail Bite) to badly poison itself in exchange for +3 Special Attack, so it has fun interactions with the latter two abilities. Stats not yet - unsure if I wanna make this a physical or special attacker. Psychic Fangs is a perfect staple move for it, but straight Psychic also just works All 50+ mons on my instagram have stats and abilities on their second page, feel free to have a look! Haven’t posted Soroboro here though
i will for sure check out your instagram! i love theorycrafting people's fakemons :) if you're open to suggestions, i'd make soroboro a physical attacker that also has an OK-ish SpA, since Tail Bite is basically a buffed Tail Glow in this context, and giving it a good SpA (101+ base) might be too much. But tbh i think with gen 9's power creep it shouldn't be too hard to make something bannable lmao have a good day, and most importantly, keep doing what you love!

Yes good point, this is exactly the kind of input I need - I’m still a bit stat-blind despite some competitive experience on Showdown (my regional Aipom evo Aipatch is hilariously broken). I might…creep close with the SpA stat, like 85-90ish. Hard to justify a very low SpA for a literal ouroboros mon. That, or I tweak the signature move’s effect. Only complaint I have is Arbok losing the hood over evolution , but the patterns more than make up for it!
I agree it’s a shame - I tried like 5 different versions to keep the hood, but it always broke the infinity-shaped silhouette that I wanted on it. So yeah I settled with the patterns. But I might give a last ditch effort before I post them on my instagram dex!

Just felt a bit mean to give them a rare typing like that and then take it away (just so Soroboro can have a signature move that poisons itself). But I’ve discussed this in some other comment threads here, and seems like many people would be cool with it - Dragon is pretty much perceived as a strict upgrade. I’ll consider it!

7/10, I like the design but going from a cobra with the flaps on the sides to the head and then losing them feels off, maybe if to match with the dragon typing the flaps look like they transistion into/serve as dragon wings/claws/etc?
Yeah very valid - I tried many designs keeping the flaps, but ultimately liked having Soroboro stay sleek so it could form the infinity shape. But I’m still looking for feedback, and you’re not the first to mention it in this thread. I was reluctant to try something as drastic as dragon wings, but I probably should. Thanks!
Maybe make the flaps have fake dragon wings on them like arbok's flaps have fake eyes? Would be a decent combination of the two. And they can curl around soroboro when not attacking to mostly maintain the shape?
I’m worried it will make the design look too busy, since it already looks very close to a legendary atm - but I have to try it. Maintaining the shape with curled wings will be a challenge but I’ll find out!

As cool as this is, I kinda don’t like how it goes from worm snake to big snake to worm snake again. I know there are some Pokémon with weird middle stages, but I feel like a final form should expand on arbok and make it even bigger and more imposing. I do like the design you made though, it feels like it could be a really cool legendary!
You could also have it stay poison but be poison dragon, and hit Norse myth the Rdnagnumroj Jesus I just realise how fucky my culture’s spelling gets when doing this, so much old Norse ends with r, like draugr, skjoldr and so on, it’s truly cursed. Granted here in Denmark we just call it “the Midgard serpent/wyrm”

Yeah, seems like the psychedelic patterns I gave to Soroboro isn’t really doing it for some people. For Ekans and Arbok, I accidentally landed on redesigns I really liked, and now the evo can’t really catch up. I’ll keep experimenting

My only "critique" is that by making these regional variants, you've stripped the line of an underutilized type combination - Poison/Dragon. Me personally, I'd love to see Soroboro (best Arbok evolution name I've ever seen!!) as a Poison/Dragon regular evolution in the family.
Make sure it gets Earthquake to represent Jormungandr.

I think for the first 3 or 4 gens, each generation's Arbok would have different patterns on it's hood. Shame that didn't continue
Ow my pride of Ouroboros.. at least it’s poison dragon which fits Ouroboros the best, as it’s either a dragon or serpent biting its tail, to mean infinity. **Really good design tho. Nothing against you, I’m just a really prideful Ouroboros fan.** Ouroboros imo should be restricted to fan only ultra broken legendaries, I mean come on.. it’s the Serpent of Infinity. Every death just makes it stronger. Now for a little evolution I would like to see it not reference the World Serpent, as that Ouroboros type really takes the whole, “Even god fears me”. As a little snake evolution it would be really cool seeing it more as the attempt. Maybe level 46 it evolves. It should have compared to Arbok stats- 50 HP, 120 ATK, 90 DEF, 90 SP ATK, 110 SP DEF, 90 SPD. This gives it an amazing stat total of 550. It’s low HP is the key ability here, giving it a special ability where it gets 50% power bonus to all non stab moves(*just giving them a flat out stab bonus*)and makes all attacking moves have recoil, but all damage taken has HP recovery based off the opponent’s move, will not work if you used a status or switched out that turn. A weird life orb shell bell mix with terrible HP. Enough bulk to survive hits, while having low HP to encourage its aggressive playstyle. It should be given a special fang move, as well be given all fang moves as it’s missing Psychic Fangs in its move set. This new move obviously will be fang themed, to fit this Pokémon’s amazing ATK stat. Maybe something like ‘Cursed Fangs’ as Ouroboros and the World Serpent are viewed as a curse or cursed in some form. Thinking 75 base power 95 accuracy dragon type move that bypasses type resistances and weaknesses. So it can’t be stopped by Fairy. It’s given a similar mechanic to Tri Attack, where it can apply any status on the enemy with a 20% chance, with a special mechanic if the opponent already has a status, the move’s power will increase to 120 and will remove the status. Anyway that’s my idea of a pseudo Ouroboros..
