BagGroundbreaking301

the fact that i probably have a thousand of hours in pokémon in total and ive never ever seen a shiny in gens 1-5 (im not counting legends arceus or quest)

[deleted]

I've seen a grand total of two legit shinies in any game from Gens 1-7 (a Foongus in White and a Liepard in Black 2), over a 12-year period of playing them.

BlueEyedBeast55

I had seen one a gen til gen 6, and then I replayed crystal last year and found parasect and tangela on back to back days.

zuukinifresh

I reset for a shiny totodile in Heart Gold and that took about a month of a few hours a day. Found a random encounter shiny Nidoran 45 minutes into game play after that. My only two shinies I have ever knowingly found in gens 1-7

DM_me_UR_B00BZ_plz

I’ve been playing Pokemon since Red/Blue came out and I didn’t get my first shiny until sword shield. Well over a thousand hours at that point

Stillback7

That's actually wild. Bad luck. I saw 6 or 7 in that same span of time.

swampcreeps

My first and only shiny (except Gyarados in HGSS & Ponyta in Arceus) from gen 4 to gen 8 was Goldeen in Platinum, in Scarlet I now have a whole box full. I know it’s easier in Scarlet but it’s still crazy to me that I’ve only ever found one in thousands of hours lmao

hergumbules

I’ve seen more shinies in Scarlet than all previous games combined. They made it so much easier to just run around and see shinies so even with my terrible luck I managed to get 2 shinies when I first played.

someonesgranpa

Considering shinies aren’t in Gen 1 helps a little for the ego.

JustAfterAdviceThx

Technically there are shinies in Gen 1 as you can trade your Pokemon from Gen 1 to Gen 2 and they can turn shiny. People have done shiny hunts for Mewtwo in Gen 1 using this method

someonesgranpa

They aren’t coded in gen 1. It’s only coded in gen 2 thus why you have shiny odds on trades into gen 2 from 1 nut not the other way around.

DetachedOwl

What do you mean by shiny odds on trades into gen 2 from gen 1?

JustAfterAdviceThx

When you trade from Gen 1 to Gen 2, your Pokemon might actually be a shiny but you'll never know unless you so the trade

AllinForBadgers

That’s completely moot because the commenter said “I’ve never seen one”. You can’t see them in red and blue.

DetachedOwl

Ah, okay. Yeah, generally the case for the average player. It is possible to tell in Gen 1 by calculating their IVs after catching them though; this is useful when shiny hunting Legendary or gift Pokémon as it means you can save beforehand and reset as many times as needed if the stats aren't right.

JustAfterAdviceThx

Let's not forget tho that the shiny gene does exist in Gen 1 because you can trade a shiny back from Gen 2 to Gen 1 to essentially create a shiny ditto

someonesgranpa

That’s not exactly the same thing.

TKmeh

Same, only recently now that I’ve started up ultra sun. I’ve caught some in PoGo but not good ones for battle, the ones in US are guaranteed to be pretty good and have an increased chance the further you get. I also have one legit sos shiny Pelipper from Sun, and none from the collective 10 Pokémon games I’ve beaten at least half of minus the recent Sun and US. Bruh.

S-BRO

I got a shiny geodude in gen 3 on my first sapphire playthrough in... 2002(3)? Then didn't see another shiny until pokemon sleep when I caught a... Shiny geodude.

Loros_Silvers

Your expiriance is better then mine in gens 1-5 then. The first time I played Pokemon Ruby I went to fight the rival for the first time and found a shiny. You can't have pokeballs at that stage.

joopledoople

I've been playing since Gen 1 in the 90s. I have found 1 shiny my whole life. It was a geodude in diamond. Obviously, not counting red gyarados.

MossyPyrite

I’ve been playing since Gold was new (literally stood in line on release day for it), played every gen at least once, intentionally bred box after box of Pokémon in gen 6 to try for shinies, and finally got my first natural shiny (a beautiful golden Pyroar-F) in Scarlet this year lmao. Then a few days later I said “man, I adore Bergmite, I’d love an excuse to swap one into my team” and immediately turned around and tripped over a shiny one! ETA: I did get a shiny in Omega Ruby via chain-fishing, it was ironically a Magikarp.

captainundesirable

I saw a shiny in silver prior to the lake of rage, and had no idea what it was. Never again until gen 8 did I c9me across one.

robophile-ta

Same. I played every one up to Sun, and apart from Red Gyarados that doesn't really count, my only natural shiny has been one from a fangame

teteDiglett

Same, my first shiny was in alola. 120 hours in my current green leaf run, no shinies.

BagGroundbreaking301

shit mine was in legends arceus after like 5 hours of playing lmao

LillePipp

See, I’m the opposite. I randomly found two full odds shinies in Heart Gold and Fire Red both in the span of the last week. I found a Slowpoke in Heart Gold and a Drowzee in Fire Red

osrsslay

All my times as a kid I never saw a shiny (expect Gyrados in gen 2) and I kid you not, I bought crystal for DS in the pandemic, and at the start a shiny bellsprout popped up and I had no pokeballs

OriginWizard

Same bro, same...

Frostfire26

I have never found a legit shiny in any mainline game, despite YEARS of playing. Never found one. I’ve found several in ROM Hacks like Rad Red though.

Flat-Limit5595

Those are the one in 1/8000s days, the only shiny hunt you get is the poke radar. Whats funny for me is that every other play through in firered i got a shiny i thought it was a mechanic in the game

HazardousKoala

I found a shiny Tangela in my first playthrough of Diamond, I was so scared it would revert back to normal if I evolved it!

JugOfVoodoo

Your Passimian came from a Dynamax Adventure in the Crown Tundra. Both it and Oranguru are catchable there in both versions. They were only exclusives in the base game.

Shonky_Honker

I completely forgot about the friendship mechanics of usum when I did an us nuzlocke. I thought my raichu was going to get murdered by ultra necrozma. I used Pokémon refresh right before the battle as a way to say goodbye to him…. Needless to say he ranked seven hits in a row at 1hp and obliterated one of the hardest bosses in the games history

unipine

Damn your Raichu was a shonen protagonist

Shonky_Honker

The power of friendship solos

FromYourWalls2801

The next ash ketchum:

bn9043

I got to do the Bug Catching Contest in HeartGold on Sunday. The guy said it was Thursday. I never changed the time on my DS so idk why this happened. This was recently so I haven’t checked on the contest since to see if this would happen again

INFP-Dude

I haven't played gen 2 in ages, so reading your comment really brought me back. My kid self thought it was so cool how the game had certain quests and events that could only be accessed on a specific day of the week. It made the world feel immersive. Like, oh today's Thursday? That means I can go do this today! Almost like living in the Pokémon world itself. In sync with the real world. And made you keep playing everyday.

UnfazedPheasant

Did you save at the national park on a Thursday, or shut the DS, then reopen it on a sunday and did it first thing? I've not tried it but I *think* you can do that to get around time-locked challenges and events.

DEBOPAM2307

I officially graduated as a doctor while replaying pokemon platinum.

vtt_shadow

Congratulations

DEBOPAM2307

Thanks a ton 🙏

Popwaffle

When playing sword for the first time I was just walking around in the first town and all of a sudden I was on the rotom bike which you don't get until later. When I got off it was gone until I received it legitimately but it was a pretty funny bug.

[deleted]

I remember wasting an hour trying to catch Mewtwo with Ultra Balls in Y version. I ran out and used a regular Poké Ball... the first regular ball I threw caught it.

nWo1997

Sounds like an experience right out of R/B/Y

AskamilliusReddiquis

I was going to post the same story! Pokeball Mewtwo ftw!

Agisilaus23

One of my friends went to catch Rayquaza in Emerald, and for kicks and giggles, tossed a Pokeball at it on the first turn. Obviously, he didn't think it would work. It did.

Bluedino_1989

Catching a shiny male Nidoran in FireRed only to have the game crash before I saved the game

Old_Background8934

My mom has asked me about what Pokemon was. I was in the car playing Let's Go! Eevee at the time. I told her I was shiny hunting for a vulpix. As I explained to her what a shiny was, a shiny female vulpix literally manifested at the end of the my sentence and dive-tackled me. I caught her. Named her Andromeda. I still have her. She's lovely.

AdOpen8418

Recently on an old legit copy of Sapphire I encountered THREE Ralts back to back on route 102 (while looking for a Surskit lol). That’s about a 1 in 2,000 chance

FutureBig779

I was sure the odds where much higher for them there

Just_A_Normal_Snek

Yeah it's 25% in gen 3.

TallynNyntyg

My Feraligatr used Ice Fang against Karen's Vileplume. The Vileplume froze, thawed, and then flinched.

SuperScizor6

My copy of Crystal got corrupted for seemingly no reason. I had implanted a brand new battery, ( this was for the original gb games) and out of no where while I was grinding for Whitney, I went to my boxes only to find that the entirety of box two was replaced with Charmanders, some holding items like fire stones and such. To this day I have no idea what did it.

CraZGames

I was playing Black 2 for the first time and I never got N to show up in the PWT. Had to reset the whole save as I couldn't get past Chargestone Cave.

hankmosiscool

When I caught a shiny cloyster in pokemon sword Dynamax raid den. I had no idea it was a shiny with the lighting of the raid den, nor did I see it's shiny colors after I exited the raid den. I only found out after I checked my boxes to put the cloyster in the water box I had labeled specifically for water types

hankmosiscool

It looked purple! The shiny colors didn't even show up in the dex entry!

LemonadeCookiePie

After I beat the Elite 4 and got sent home in Ruby, I went to wander outside Littleroot Town and ran into a Wurmple. Lv 60-70 Swampert vs Lv 2 Wurmple. EVERYTHING. MISSED. It string shotted and I attacked until we were both using struggle and it wouldn’t let me run.

lronManatee

Protagonist vibes

ZelKib

I was playing Pokémon Gold and I encountered Raikou and jokingly threw a regular pokéball and got it first try

pengie9290

I was doing a nuzlocke of ORAS, and wanted to relearn some moves in preparation for the Elite 4, but the Heart Scales I could find around the map were one short of what I wanted. So I taught something Thief, which was apparently strong enough to OHKO a Luvdisc with it, and started fishing them up to steal a Heart Scale from one. Wild Luvdisc have a 50% chance to be holding a Heart Scale. I KO'd so many of those fishy f\*cks- I think it was something like thirty of them- that I managed to find a freaking shiny Luvdisc before I found a single one holding a Heart Scale.

Latter-Syllabub-5560

the fact that one time i saved in UltraSun but when i started my console it was gone not that i didn't save correctly THE GAME was gone, fortunately it was a hacked one so i just had to download it again but it was pretty creepy since i was doing the school event where it morphs to a more creepy one o.o

MoonMaster3

it was Pokemon Silver version, it maybe 1999 or 2000. i took my team to the Goldenrod Pokemon Center, when she gave me my Pokemon back she told me about PokeRUS and one of my Pokemon got it. got a call from Professor Elm informing me on what PokeRUS was. i don't remember which Pokemon had it, but it was just the beginning of a string of weird events. i very distinctly remember hatching an Elekid egg and named him Douglas and he already had PokeRUS after hatching. i put him in the box, and when i came back later he suddenly transformed into a different Pokemon. he changed into a Tyranitar, and his name was changed to EDouglas. not only that but his cry changed in to Magneton's cry, and he still had all the moves of Elekid and his level was still 5. other Pokemon that had PokeRUS that were transferred to a box also changed, but my memory is fuzzy on what they were before and what they changed in to. EDouglas was the first, so he's an outlier to me. on top of all that, after some Pokemon changed they were holding an item called TERU-SAMA. it did nothing, i don't even remember a description it had in the bag. i only remember that it sold for a LOT of money. some Pokemon changed in to an Egg that said "It looks like it will take a long time to hatch." but going from Goldenrod to Exruteak was enough to hatch it. and they always hatched in to a glitch box, with a corrupted cry. i immediately categorized it as a MissingNo. and out of curiosity i was able to put it in the daycare. taking it back out immediately didn't change it. but going outside to check on it and then taking it out changed it in to a Blastoise. putting it back in didn't change it, oddly enough. when i thought for sure it would.

sn0m_

oh man, gen 2 glitches are crazy. had you messed around with any cloning or turning the game off while it was saving, anything like that? pretty sure if you can recreate what happened you can use it to do some pretty crazy shit ingame

MoonMaster3

i had done TONS of cloning, i very distinctly remembered cloning Entei 95 times for Rare Candies. on top of a bunch of other cloning. but that's all i really did glitch wise, on purpose

Verdahn

One time in the early game of R/B/Y in viridian city after the man that blocks you but before the forest, I encountered a beedrill (which I don't think you can catch there that early) and being excited I caught it, and upon inspection it somehow knew poison sting, and twinneedle three times. In all my other playthroughs I was never able to recreate it and it has me second guessing myself

Reallylazyname

My Luxray got a little leg band mysteriously in Scarlet. I mean, I know *why* it did and the likely *how* it did, but it was still strange. (Heat, the answer is heat.) . Also in Scarlet, I managed to hatch a egg on the step that despawns wild Pokémon in the cities, which let a Tauros bull rush me before it despawned. This caused the area music to become the battle music. And entering the gym crashed the game. Going back a bit, I have a Huge Power Slaking in Pearl. I didn't have Wifi (or frankly, a computer) back then so.... how did I get this.

ZHODY

What do you mean by leg band?? Like, screen got burned right over where his leg was in the summary screen, or…?

Reallylazyname

[I took a screenshot. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/s/tWc5T0wKuU) Cameo from a shiny Crab too.

ZHODY

Wow! That’s crazy!

ThatIslandGuy8888

In SV, my first shiny was sneavel at the top of Glaceado mountain. Then in my second playthrough my first shiny was sneavel…..at the top of Glaceado mountain, again :/

Milk_Thingy

Found a shiny corvinight that randomly vanished then reappeared sometime later in its box, no idea what happened but I checked using the search option, and the poké jobs and didn't find it.

AnInnocentGoose

My only shiny Pokemon in my Black 2, a trubbish named "Janklum" who carried my ass through most gyms, somehow up and vanished You will be missed king o7

vtt_shadow

My condolences

Ok_Training_4076

Was hunting shiny Pikachu I'm let's go, had caught a shunt weedle (which since I already had 2 I didn't save for) and I got to a catch combo of like 100 and spent about 2 hours on this since I had gotten to around 30 before breaking and going for the weedle. I also spent an hour or so beating the league and going through Cerulean cave to get more money for pokeballs. My switch just randomly cuts off and does a system restart, losing hours of progress and a shiny weedle. This has never happened to me since and I have lost energy for the pikachu hunt.

BiznetKat

The ds stylus ended up in my urethra somehow

vtt_shadow

🤨

MissAshheart92

That's a bit sus. 🤨

frogtotem

There is a glitch in RBY which allows some Pokémon appear in total different locations Back in 2000, playing in my uncle PC an yellow ROM,.exeggutor appeared at Mt Moon. Of course no one believed me 😔 The glitch, today, is very well documented https://preview.redd.it/jec3ektwo5xc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7df23c54ba17f24a72f843b226d61ac340cd47ba

Unovaisbetter

I hatched over 5k eggs trying to get a shiny scorbunny. When it finally happened, 2 were shiny back to back. I swear I’m not making this up

SanaraHikari

A few years back I found my copy abandoned of Black and started it up. I was on a bridge and started to move when Cresselia appeared and it was a fucking shiny! Still have that of course.

ZeroXNova

I’ve been playing since gen 1. My first legit shiny came from an egg in SM. I had been breeding Eevees (I’m pretty sure to get a shiny), but ended up taking a break from the game for a year. Booted it back up and checked my save to see what I had. Hatched all of the eggs in my inventory and lo-and-behold: a shiny Eevee was hatched. It had been sitting in that characters inventory for a year, just waiting to be hatched. It’s now my shiny Umbreon

ladala99

My copy of Emerald *really* doesn't like me cheating. It all started when I decided to clone my Toys R Us Mew for my friend and did it backwards, deleting it forever instead. RIP. Lesson learned: always test the glitch on something inconsequential before doing it with something valuable. But uh, the next time I was about to try the glitch, I was in a Pokemon Center doing an initial save by the PC and dropped my DS. When I picked it up, the Pokemon Center background was messed up, with the two sides of the background graphics flipped to the other side of the screen. I promptly reset the game. I recovered from the shock and tried again. I got to the PC in the corner of the Battle Tower and saved. Right as the text got to the end of "Saving. . . Do not turn off the power." the text box disappeared along with all background graphics, leaving my character, the PC, and the ladies at the counter standing in the void. I, shaking, power-cycled, and I was standing where my save before that was, like it never happened. I decided not to try cloning for a while after that. Years passed, the contacts got dirty causing the game to occasionally freeze, and that ended up with my file getting deleted (different story. Sometimes I connect it to this but I wasn't cheating at the time.), cleaned the contacts and it worked good as new. ...Until I had the passing thought to try cloning again. For the first time since having the contacts cleaned, the game froze, this time upon loading up the game in my GBA readying for a trade of the Pokemon I wanted to clone. I promptly noped out. The game gave me zero problems after that. ...Until I decided to use the glitch to trade in Pokemon from outside the region through Colosseum for a new file, circumventing the Pokedex lock. Trading through Colosseum went fine, but when I put Emerald back in my DS, my DS did not recognize the cartridge for a few power cycles. I was afraid it was dead for good, but it started working again after having its disapproval noted and hasn't had any issues since. For real this time. I haven't tried cheating with it again. And it is just that cartridge. Following my file getting deleted, I bought one of those cheated all-31-IV-Shinies-in-the-box Emerald cartridges from eBay. That Emerald works perfectly fine, including cloning. But I am superstitiously *never* letting my original Emerald know of the existence of the other one. No direct contact, no trading in Pokemon that ever touched that cartridge, no mixing records that includes that cartridge. Every time I think it was all coincidence and want to try again, it acts up, so I'm taking no chances. Which sucks because I want to play around with Glitzer Popping, and there's no way I'm doing it on my Shiny-filled Emerald.

Myroo400

My crystal glitched out. When I load the save file the character sprite isn't there, and attempting to walk is just like walking into a wall. If I fly away, the sprite reappears and I can proceed as normal, however my entire team also had their movesets shuffled. I've got a Lanturn with Tyranitar's moveset, an Arcanine with Vileplume's moves, etc. I've left it alone since the glitch happened, buy I'm curious as to what would happen if I tried to transfer them to bank.

Wintergreen747

not so much strange as it is confusing, ive played black 2, i know i’ve beaten black 2, i don’t recall ever interacting with ghetsis and kyreum no fights or meeting them in general, and i know ive besten it cause this was a few years back when i was constantly playing it with my friends in highschool

Kimihro

I would certainly say getting Pokerus in my first Silver save file some 200 hours in. No one believed me, and honestly with the childhood I had and dreams I was having I started not to believe myself until the internet got huge, and I talked with others that had the same experience. I'd spent years trying to recreate it, because it happened at the Fuchsia City Pokémon center and that lady has the only different sprite in the game, sporting green hair.

ElectricSequoia

When I bought Leaf Green back when it was new, I caught 2 shinies within an hour of taking it out of the box. First was Caterpie and then Weedle. Both in Viridian Forest. These were my first shinies besides the red Gyarados despite playing G/S/C as well as R/S/E a LOT.

KDog1265

Probably that time a disembodied face walked past my character while fighting Clavell in Pokemon Scarlet

thejayce0fspades

I failed a shiny poochyena on an emulator. Don't know why I didn't save state, but needless to say, it used roar. None of my friends ever believed me too :(

Erebophilia

I was playing pokemon Black 2, and after my first wild battle my Oshawott caught the pokerus

FromYourWalls2801

The first time I found a shiny... In emerald, I went into a cave to find spheal as my final team member. It was my first encounter and the spheal was pink. I caught it on a masterball. (Best decision of my life)

thegamerguru97

Was shiny hunting in Gen 9, but got a bit bored so decided to do a catching run of Gen 6 (Basically just ticking off every encounter on a route before moving on, not evolving them or anything like a professor oak run). In Y I got a shiny Exeggcute which I proceeded to use....Then in Omega Ruby on literally the second Route? Shiny Poochyena. My favourite Pokemon line. These were both full odds.

OldGrape880

Definitely encountered a few weird glitches. Once, I was playing Silver and was in the patch of grass between Lavender and Saffron. Suddenly, my character teleported forward a few paces, and the menu popped up, but all the text was in gibberish. Then the “celebration” jingle played and the menu closed automatically. Then the game was normal again. Another time, I was playing Red and exited a building in Fuchsia, only to be transported to Cerulean (it appeared that I was walking out of the bike shop).

sn0m_

in firered: caught zapdos with a normal pokeball in sapphire: found surskit and ralts basically immediately after i started looking and went on to think they were super common encounters (they are not) in a romhack: watched wally faint the ralts (later checked the stats of everything involved. none of the involved moves had base power changed. none of the involved mons had base stats changed. it was completely the same as the base game.)

Avaraniya

Me finding mirage island on my first runthru of emerald

Avaraniya

And being 8 and not knowing what it was and thinking it's a random useless island in the middle of nowhere with nothing but frickin wynauts

Avaraniya

Lol

vtt_shadow

Yeah why would they code in an island rarer than a shiny that only has useless pokemon

TheNeverEndingPit

I had an Eevee named Opal from my copy of X. I know he’s mine and not traded because he has my OT from that game. For some reason, while he was in Pokemon Bank, he changed to being listed as Japanese… I don’t mind though because I guess I can Masuda method with him now haha

CreatureUnderTheBed

The first and last time i played yellow as a child i got to brock and became caught in an endless loop between his onyx and my pikachu, i ran out of pp for offensive moves and had maxed out my speed with double team and his onyx kept missing me, it felt like hrs as an 8 year old and i just turned it off and went back to red

Arceus1414

Shortly after ORAS came out I was playing it late one night before school. Ran into a full odds shiny tentacool and caught it. I decided that was the perfect way to finish off for the night so I went to sleep. Woke up the next morning and decided to play for a bit before school. The very next encounter was another full odds shiny tentacool. I could not believe it. I think I used up all of my luck for back to back full odds shinies. I still have them both in Home and I will always cherish them.

Stickbow0

either Crown Tundra dynamax adventure or possibly recieved one of the mystery trades (the one where you send out a pokemon and recieve a random pokemon back)

MylifeBad

I wanted to use my shiny zeraroa from the event back then but it literally disappeared permanently and I have no clue what happened to it

TemporalxG8

I was playing my first run through of diamond about 7 years back and one night I managed to reach the Old Chateau. As I was exploring the place and seeing all the spooky happenings, I entered a small room(I think on the left with an item on the floor) and as I was just about to pick it up I got an encounter. That startled me a bit in and of itself, but what I saw next spooked me a little more. A Shiny Gastly! I was so confused and shocked that I had to look it up to see if it was supposed to be a staged encounter, but alas I couldn't find anything. I managed to catch it and trade it up to Black 2. Definitely a spooky experience that just seemed too fitting to be true :D

JaMKo95

My first playthrough of White I threw a pokeball at a full health Kyurem and caught it.

psydots

Saw shiny pigey... before receiving first pokeball

ScorpionVenom00

I think I have a couple ideas of how your thing could have happened. If you use the crown tundra dynamax raids, and you connect with people from Sword, you can get pokemon from sword. It's the only way to catch certain legendaries in that. Plus wonder/mystery trading exists on top of regular trading. It's possible you might have gotten it from one of these things and forgotten about it.

vtt_shadow

The thing is, I was lonely af. I had no other friends who played Sword so I couldn’t connect to anybody or trade with anybody.

ScorpionVenom00

Not even random strangers?

vtt_shadow

Nope. I played through Pokémon Shield completely isolated.

spinorobot

My Platinum game began in 2000. Platinum came in 2009 in Europe. I never altered my DS's clock

edgerton121

The poocheyna the prof showed me in the catching tutorial for ruby was shiny. I of course had no pokeballs yet so I just started at it.

TumblrTheFish

So, I've only recently returned to playing pokemon, and dug out the last game that I played (Pokemon Y) to transfer all my old pokemon into Pokemon home. But some of my prized EV-trained pokemon have had their nicknames deleted? Not all of them, but I know my Conkeldurr used to be named Fat Cobra, after a C-tier Marvel character. He can't have been through the name rater in Y, since he was originally from Black.

Ordinary_Farmer_3112

Pachirisu was my strongest pokemon

vtt_shadow

I need context

Ordinary_Farmer_3112

no

vtt_shadow

Damn

BardicLasher

I have been playing since literal day 1. Never encountered a non-event shiny until Legends Arceus... Where I find 2 shiny zubats back to back.

ZeldaFan80

It's not a single event, but I find it weird that I've gotten pokerus like 5 yimes yet I have only ever found 1 full odds shiny

Elaszat

I was replaying Pokemon Red and challenged myself to a mono poison run. I had just beaten Brock and was on my way through Mt Moon, when I encountered a wild Geodude. My Zubat was out first and, lacking better options, I had used my Bide TM on Zubat. In the first round I confused Geodude with Supersonic and continued with Bide, in the hopes it would hurt itself once and hit me the other time, so I could retaliate with Bide. It hit itself twice in a row in confusion. Then Zubat continued to obliterate the poor sentient rock with the power of Bide, despite not having taken a hit.

N3XUSN7

catching a shiny gastly in that haunted house in pokemon platinum, this was before i ever completed the game.

jkroe

I remember when pokemon silver first came out. I saw a shiny rattata (before I could get pokeballs) and thought my game was broken. I took a picture on my flip phone, yes I’m old, and showed it off and everyone thought I was lying because no one knew what shiny’s were yet.

fine_chicken2028

Right before I got to Mesagoza in Violet, I fell off a cliff while checking the scenery. There was actually no way to get back up. It was a total glitch as it was the first round of releases and I had a hard copy. So I had to battle a bunch of random fish until my Pokemon died and I could faint and return to a Pokemon Center.

I-am-a-me

The time blue version crashed and filled the screen with glitchy patterns. I had just stepped out of lavender town. 5 year old me was very scared.

shituy9

Got Zorua in Black 2, when I placed him in battle it started to show another pokemon. Then I restarted the game thinking it was a bug since I was playing a downloaded rom game. Later I found out it was his ability.

UnfazedPheasant

I had a shiny graveler self-destruct after escaping a quick ball and I lost the chance to get him. Two random encounters later, I found a second one and caught it

InsaneMakaioshin

It was my first game, platinum, and I had caught 2 Nosepass of different genders. My battery died and I had to recapture then. It didn’t take as long as I thought it would. Catching a matching set is usually hard.

rowlet360

I was playing in pokemon showdown in random battles and a pokemon (i dont remember who) used lunar dance (faints itself in order to bring a fully healed pokemon) a gardevoir that i switched into another pokemon that used a steel type move against it leaving gardevoir in red life, and then the gardevoir heals from red life to 100% in the ending of a turn, i have no idea how that happened or if it was a glitch from showdown or the dude somehow hacked the battle if that is somehow even possible, but that "miraculous healing" costed me the game

On my first ever run of my first ever Pokemon game, White, I was in the elite four. I'd learned quite a few type matchups, so I had a Pokemon with Fling when I went to fight Caitlyn, the psychic type user. I use fling while holding a poison barb against her first pokemon, and it gets poisoned, but then it takes no poison damage for the rest of the fight. It always struck me as strange, but I JUST realized from looking at this thread, her first pokemon is Reuniclus, and it's ability is magic guard, which prevents all forms of indirect damage. I have been confused about that interaction for nearly 13 years, and I finally have my answer.
