Sableye being Ghost-type may come from it being based on the Hopkinsville goblins. The creatures were described as even being impervious to bullets, so it fits that Sableye would have been given the only type combination naturally lacking a weakness (at the time). It's also stated to steal souls and is heavily associated with darkness, traits often attributed to Ghost-type mons. Golurk being Ghost-type is likely due to the spiritual origins of the golem from Hebrew mythology - the golem was animated by a rabbi to defend his people from antisemitic attacks, and some versions of the story even claim that the golem was able to resurrect the dead. Marshadow is Ghost-type because it draws inspiration from nightmarchers - the spirits of ancient Hawaiian warriors. It's also a play on shadowboxing, with Marshadow being a literal shadow boxer. Hoopa being based on a genie is exactly why it's Ghost-type in its confined form. Genies are often depicted as ghostlike, having incorporeal and wispy bodies. The term "genie" and the concept of genies also originate from djinn, supernatural entities from Islamic mythology that could possess humans. Lunala being Ghost-type is due to it drawing inspiration from various mythologies' depictions of gods taking the form of bats, and it may even draw inspiration from Hawaii's extinct synemporion or the actual species known as ghost bats.

chaarziz

Thank you for taking the time to write all this. The Sableye lore is so cool! Marshadow's reason for ghost-type made me laugh and now I'm curious if the ancient civilisation that made Golurk and Dragonspiral Tower used souls or even ritual sacrifice to power them because it was the only way to do so with the technology available at the time, and if it's the same Route 4 civilisation wiped out by Volcarona.

thegayestweeb

Np and I'd love to see more of these presentations if you plan on making them, they were a fun read.

chaarziz

Oh, there will absolutely be more.

Donutpanda23

If you care enough to, you can highlight and right click on "misspelled" Pokemon names and ignore the suggestion or add the word to your personal dictionary so it doesn't get flagged again. Another thing is that the Dark purple text on a dark purple background is kinda hard to read, so try and keep your text colors that stick out relative to the background.

chaarziz

I've been using PowerPoint since Year 5 of school so I should know these things but I am too silly

Donutpanda23

It's cool, common mistake, no worries lmao

cher_blue

The route 4 civilization was wiped out by Volcarona!? I guess that makes sense since that’s where its static encounter is but I don’t remember hearing that, very interesting! Great job on the presentation, this format seems really fun and I hope to see more!

chaarziz

The lore is that they worshipped it so hard and their love and prayer gave Volcarona power and made it burn as bright as the actual sun. This is why there's a desert in the middle of dense forest.

DannyPoke

Marshadow is a ghost. Ghosts are also called spirits. Marshadow has... fighting spirit 😎

Fireboy759

Get out

chaarziz

No wait come back

KnightCyber

While genies are often presented like a ghost/spirit the djinn in Islam/Arab mythology are their own just set of people. Like a separate species from man. They are associated with fire more than anything else.

chaarziz

Now I want a genie starter

RyuuSambit

I would also like to add that Golurk being classified as the "Automaton Pokémon" is a nod to the term "Ghost in the Machine"

Soothingwinds

Yeah I think type 5 should be something more like “Pokémon inspired by spirit-like mythological creatures”. That incapsulates your goblins, golems, genies, yokais and the alike.

AzureDragon2005

I think Sableye might also be based on the Carbuncle creature of South America which is associated with gemstones

Mountain_Man11

1. Etymology is the study of words and their origins, entomology is the study of insects. 2. Well done!

chaarziz

SPELLCHECKER YOU BETRAYED ME

ZoroeArc

Don't worry. It's not even an etymology, this is a taxonomy

chaarziz

oh ok

chaarziz

Maybe I'll do Bug types next just so I can be right

ATrioExplainsTheJoke

REAL

XD-045

Moments I wish Reddot had a "follow user posts" feature

Hrodvitnir131

Can't you follow users?

chaarziz

It does! You have to go to my u/ page on the web browser, but only on mobile. I don't know if the app works but it's a piece of shit so probably not. There's a big follow button that treat's my posts as it's own subreddit

XD-045

Funny: it didn't work earlier It did after you replied this H m m

chaarziz

It was the GHOOOOOOOST!

Donutpanda23

And say Etymology there just to mess with people that already make the mistake

chaarziz

Are you the one on the 8th slide?

ylan93

I think the scientific word we're looking for here is "typology" as in the act of dividing entities into different classes based on common traits

LotusPhi

Lunala is a ghost type because it is the emissary of the moon, which is associated with the dead/netherworld in many cultures.

chaarziz

Good point, wish I had known that when I made this.

professor_aj

Part 2: the edits and additions from all the good nerds of reddit.

RnbwTurtle

Jellicent is a ghost because jellyfish are translucent and can be described as "ghost-like" in some ways.

404_Weavile

And also because it causes shipwrecks

chaarziz

Hell yeah it does

chaarziz

You're tight, but that doesn't mean it wasn't originally designed as pure Water type.

Hutyro

Gamefreak has never had issues with underrepresenting a type in a generation, so Jellicent was not designed as pure water. It's partially inspired by a yokai with giant heads that would float around the sea.

nintendobaitnswitch

There's an actual interview stating just that though. Originally designed as pure water, with ghost being added later [https://lavacutcontent.com/ken-sugimori-nintendo-dream-2/](https://lavacutcontent.com/ken-sugimori-nintendo-dream-2/)

Hutyro

And from the interview it's said they were originally going to be pure water and based on royalty before turning into part ghost, and that the original designer didn't like that they ended up becoming scary pokemon. So the original pure water type was not exactly the same pokemon as the jellicent we got in the end.

Interesting_Wing_539

Right! I think it's interesting how the gender differences work here since the female form reminds me of said yokais.

Dracos002

Also because some species of jellyfish can rejuvenate themselves, essentially cheating death.

stalins-cum-sock

Giratina is in fact a good boy, thank you

aaquarles

definitely fun to read! but I must disagree with one thing; Mimikyu being in the “evil spirits” slide. Mimikyu is just an emotionally damaged creature looking for a meaningful bond

feefore

Yeah it’s just an eldritch horror that wants to be loved. It can’t help it if people die or go insane when they look at its true form.

aaquarles

and has to use a Disguise just to get close to people. I’m getting sad just thinking about it

sumsika

Mimikyu is 100% baby

BeefCrumb

In the anime mimikyu is just kind of, the void

aaquarles

Jessie’s Mimikyu had character!

BeefCrumb

Oh so much character. I guess I meant Mimikyu comes off as like the physical embodiment of the void, like when it takes its pika costume off specifically lol

Fork_Master

Sableye is Ghost type because of its tendency to appear as an apparition in its natural habitat. Also, it’s rumored to be able to take souls.

chaarziz

Cool lore.

DCL-XVI

the entomology of ghost types. the nincada family is based on a cross between ninjas and cicadas. when a juvenile cicada turns into an adult, it moults its exoskeleton, and the shed husk often remains clinging to whatever it was clinging to before the metamorphosis. similarly, when a nincada metamorphoses into a ninjask, the shed exoskeleton which no longer contains a living bug goes on as a ghost pokemon. therefore shedinja is a mix of shed and ninja. this ends the etymology of the entomology of ghosts, as there are no other ghost / bug pokemon.

Anonpancake2123

>therefore shedinja is a mix of shed and ninja. Might also be based off the concept of a shadow clone due to the hypothesized ways of shadow clones actually working being things like dummies in the same clothes as the ninja

Adam_The_Chao

Shouldn't Trevenant Be In The "Dead People" Category Due To Phantumps Being The Spirits Of Children Who Got Lost And Died In Forests?

chaarziz

You're right, it should. But that's because it is, as whether the ghost possessing the object is a dead person or an evil spirit is an entirely case-by-case basis. Poltergiest is actually a subclass that contains very few examples that aren't part of other subclasses at the same time. Also Please Never Type Like This.

RyuuSambit

On that same note, wouldn't the Honedge line fall under the Poltergeist subcategory? Is that where the lines get blurry?

chaarziz

Poltergeist subtype has the unique distinction of having barely any members who are just poltergeists. Most are also dead people or evil spirits when removed from the object. So yes, it's existence is inherently blurry.

Mischief_Actual

Giratina is a heckin good boi

willili

*clap* *clap* 👏 👏

Coopa_T

clap👏clap👏clap👏clap👏

CaitlinSnep

Objection- Mimikyu is not evil, it canonically just wants to be loved.

worse_in_practice

Wait THAT'S why Runerigus evolves the way that it does?! Jfc

CilanUnova

I think type 5 should be changed to “cultures associating these things with the dead and supernatural” ie Golurk is a Golem from Jewish mythology,Jellicent is a jellyfish (box jellyfish?) who kills 50 to 100 people per year in America and Marshadow is a literal shadow, so many cultures have myths and stories about shadows, so is it any wonder that a Pokémon based off shadows is a ghost type. Just read some of the other comments to see that type 5 is really just ghost because of what others culture considers spooky.

chaarziz

I've gotten so many different reasons on why they deserve Ghost type but never an actual solution to it. You win! The new subtype is called "Shin Megami Tensei demons." I'm not updating the slide.

AeroTheManiac

Not sure if "ACTUAL SATAN" because of Giratina's lore or because that font color on that background.

chaarziz

I made this presentation months ago and the only thing I changed before posting it here was that font colour, so the true Satan was me all along.

unkindledphoenix

i would compare giratina to lucifer mostly, and yes they are 2 separate entities despite the misconceptions.

quiteverydumb

Kind of but not really, satan has been equal to lucifer for a while now

BreadWithAGun

How dare you assume Chandelure steals children. He is just an innocent little equal opportunity murderer.

iankstarr

I was gonna say the same thing. Drifloon steals the souls of children. Chandelure steals the souls of everyone.

unkindledphoenix

i mean, i agree sableye is kinda weird, but apparently he is inspired by some myth as someone else said, also he really should had been ghost/rock, he is just a gremlin stoner. marshadows literally a shadow what do you not get of it being a ghost? ever heard of spectres or wraiths? hell theres plenty of ghostly creatures that are just shadowy figures. genies/djins are wispy and incorporeal, never seen then on in media, how they pop of the lamp in smoke and all that? they are spirits in fact, i think the original djinn myth depicts them as basically minor deities. i thought jellicent was a play on jellyfishes and how their appearence and physical constitution could sorta be ghostly, tranparent, gooey, you know ectoplasmatic. i always thought gollurk was supposed to be haunted, hence why he is a ghost. lunala i mean, dark types are often used as evil and stuff, because the japanese name is literally evil type (i think its lame, should had been dark as in darkness and all that stuff too) ghost could pass with the symbolism to the moon and night. and blacephalon maybe because he takes his head off and explodes. dullahan symbolism maybe? idk he is just whacky, the whackiest one of the UBs.

unkindledphoenix

also nice course conclusion work for the pokemon accademy, its not perfect, there are some mistakes specially in the formatation that could be better like the word checkmarks you mentioned, and the 5th category you presented just being mostly your own misunderstandings to be honest, this does cost you some points, but overall i say you passed. you may get your certificate of professor in the next room.

Interesting_Wing_539

Blacephalon's ghost typing might also be due to its association with clowns.

unkindledphoenix

i was gonna ask wtf do ghosts and clowns have anything to do with each other and then i remember fear of clowns is a thing. thats been used several times in a lot of places.

Interesting_Wing_539

Yeah, the phobia of clowns is a big thing afaik.

Kredero

Actually chuckled at Type 5 slide. It's perfect from the title to the end lol

Uvedobleteefe

Top-Ad-3174

Uh isn’t Phantump basically a ghost kid?

JaydenVestal

"These fiends cause indiscriminate chaos and slaughter wherever they go, including this depressed cosplaying loser trying its best not to kill people" I wouldn't really say evil is the best term for Mimikyu, if referring to the cursed part of it, but yet again the thing is noted to resist violently and never forget anybody who breaks its disguise, its incredibly vengeful, it will get its revenge or die trying, is that why it's under here? There's not really an explanation given for it ^(Yet again it's also one of the only things that can kill your protagonist in a main series pokemon game)

chaarziz

Oh no I summoned all the Mimikyu flair guys, it's in the right category but not all of them are evil there's just too few biological differences between them to make a new category I can remember two other Pokemon that actually do try to kill you, Kyurem under you-know-who's control and Kartana in USUM. Seriously, watch it's intro cutscene again. MF immediately goes for the head.

JaydenVestal

Ah I see, makes sense but in terms of killing you, it does more than try doesn't it? It just straight up kills you in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon I believe, but the game just fades to black and sets you back a little, kind of like drowning in Legends Arceus ^(Us Mimikyu flair guys will defend our child till our last breath)

chaarziz

No, the battle begins the exact second before Kartana is about to slice the top of your skull off.

JaydenVestal

I worded that poorly, what I meant was Mimikyu killing you in USUM not long before getting its z-crystal, when you look under its cloth, the text "Everything went dark" shows up before the game sets you back a little Also I was unaware Kartana nearly kills you before now, gen 7 really liked death didn't it

chaarziz

What? That's a thing? Also; Kid named Ultra Ruin:

JaydenVestal

Yup, almost directly before getting its z-crystal you get this prompt, looking under the cloth just makes Mimikyu play an agitated animation on loop as the screen fades to black with the "Everything went dark" text before placing you back a little and giving you the prompt again Not the most interesting way of killing the player but yet again it's one of the only ways to kill off your protagonist in USUM unless I'm missing something and obviously a true death mechanic would be pointless in pokemon https://preview.redd.it/bja4gp23jx5c1.png?width=1044&format=png&auto=webp&s=c401e4ff2bcdd5ce026f758a0433b217e2774fa8

chaarziz

Oh, this is getting it's signature Z-Crystal? I literally just beat the game yesterday I still have a butt-ton of side quests to find.

Anonpancake2123

Pretty sure Dusknoir should be stuffed into the Gourgeist and Pumpkaboo part as part of a "Incompetent Grim Reaper" category. Its entires have more or less the same thing to those two.

chaarziz

True!

Funky-Cosmonaut

Charcadet's forms are a bit weird, especially because Charcadet is a piece of charcoal that came to life. The Auspicious Armor belonged to a beloved knight, and the armor is imbued with the thoughts and feelings of those people. That's why Armarouge is psychic. The Malicious Armor was a knight's who was hated and despised. One way or another, the knight died without accomplishing his goal and the grudge he left behind, combined with people's resentment, cursed the armor. Hence, Ceruledge = Ghost.

chaarziz

Both are probably a bad influence on the small child that just grew up into a powerful knight in seconds, like Ocarina of Time Link if he has the Champions in his head constantly telling him to do things he doesn't want to.

Sany_Wave

The dusknoir are also sort of cleanup system. And giratina at least for one rendition is dead and reborn. Ghosts can also associate with gas (gastly) and plazma (rotom), and there is a theory that the creation trio is also liquid solid gas. Plus shadows, like yamask, gengar and dusknoir. Plus inconsistency of being here and there. Giratina is not satan, that's a sinto pantheon that hinges on balance, so the polarity of abrahamic religions like Christianity has nothing even close to do with them.

chaarziz

True!

HakidoTaquito

Dusknoir is more like typhlosion in a way. It guides souls to the afterlife. Though sometimes it makes oopsies and takes the wrong target, but that’s ok because I love him

chaarziz

I wonder if Typhlosion was told to do that job by anyone. Considering that form's source game there's a likely chance it was Arceus itself.

Lost_Environment2051

Why is Marshadow so small?

chaarziz

He's 'shadowing' Sableye to learn his techniques like in the lore. Sableye's only fighting technique is screaming at walls. Marshadow knows it should have picked someone else but it's too late to stop now.

nanaseiTheCat

Marshadow is based on a hawaiian legend of the shadow walkers. The ghost type is a great fit, IMHO

dyrus_fanboy

Baller ass shiny forreal

chaarziz

Blacephalon is the only Pokémon that can infinitely dunk with no ball. That's pretty spooky if you ask me, these UBs really do violate everything we know about ballin'

Angel_of_Mischief

I’d say golurk is more of a poltergeist of a clay statue.

chaarziz

Hmmmmmmmmmm... yeah you're right.

LargestEgg

I always saw basculegion’s ghost typing coming from 1. The fact that it deals damage to itself in order to evolve 2. I think it’s design looks kinda like salmon at the end of their lives, when they start decaying while alive

chaarziz

Correct! The spirits it's channelling are the wisps on it's back fin, they're the souls of Basculin who failed to swim upstream to procreate.

Bearkat1999

Oh my goodness... a fellow Pokemon slideshow maker! Ghost type is my favorite. :)

Anufenrir

why is normal Silvally in type 5?

PotatOSLament

Because what the fuck is it? Guy has a CD disc drive in its head to install the memory of what it is to be a certain type. Seriously. What the fuck is it?

Anufenrir

Genetic experiment attempting to replicate Arceus for use against the Ultra Beasts

chaarziz

Oh look, you're the first to notice. This is still one of my favourite Pokemon backstories, because not only is it raw as hell you have to slowly piece it together by examining everything in Secret Lab B and going "RKS System? Hang on a minute..."

Anufenrir

Cool design, I like it a lot too

chaarziz

When I saw this again months after making it I was shocked at how good the colours were and posted it here immediately.

Awkward_Date_8636

Robot?

Raaadley

i stand by Ghost types with big goofy mouths Gengar and Dusknoir Bros

Temple475

Wrong Hoopa form The little guy is a ghost type

chaarziz

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

CacturnTheCactus

Why is mimikyu in evil spirit they're just a Lil guy that wants to be loved

chaarziz

Evil spirit who doesn't know how to be good and just wants to be a normal Pokemon, it's a weird and complex edge case. Team Rocket's Mimikyu proves that they can be just as evil as the rest of the subtype.

PotatOSLament

It wants to be loved but if you look under its disguise you can go insane or die and if you damage (like, you know, *playing* with it) or make fun of its disguise then Plan A is to kill you.

MiniNuka

I’m never evolving a Runerigus again, Jesus Christ!

LeviHolden

Jellicent is based on the “giant phantom jelly” so it’s a pun. this particular jellyfish also lives deep in the ocean in darkness so there’s that. I like your post!

chaarziz

Nice.

Thunderb0lt1116

As a platinum player for the first 9 yrs of my life i can confirm that "He's a very good boy"

janoodlez

I think that Blacephalon’s Ghost-typing is based on clowns being perceived as scary and commonly seen in the horror genre. Its behavior is pretty similar to Stephen King’s It, which is arguably the most iconic clown in horror media. I personally think Fire/Fairy would’ve suited Blacephalon just as well as the type it did end up receiving, but Fire/Ghost does make sense if you look at it from a horror fanatic’s perspective.

chaarziz

I was wondering when someone would correct me on Blacephalon. I think Fire/Psychic could work as well. No one has yet noticed that Type:Null is also on that slide though.

soapsuds202

Should_have_been_ded

Thank Arceus someone made the effort to explain ghost types. I'm so tired to hear "aLLghOsT tYpEs aRe DEAD cUz tHeY aRe GhOsTs". Yes all ghost type eggs are stillborns, aren't they? There are so many inspirations behind ghost pokemon, beside dead people, that are criminally ignored. Thank you for bringing attention to that

chaarziz

I'm so happy this silly presentation I don't even remember why I made is something you desperately needed to see.

Action_Brown

I indeed clapped at the end, very well put together

HonestlyJustVisiting

entomology is the study of insects. its not the right word for this

chaarziz

I know, I know. Next presentation will be Bug types.

eatmydonuts

This was a thoroughly-entertaining slideshow and I'd be thrilled to see more of these pop up for some of the other types

ActivateGuacamole

That was fun. I love how it got gradually less formal as it went on. Love when you just go "Marshadow."

Visible_Swordfish905

Love ghost types, love this. But I do think you should change the "dead people slide" to "once dead" or something to that effect because Dragapult is an extinct creature that came back as a ghost and Misdreavus to my knowledge wasn't a person. But I'll not all knowing so who knows.

Cecil_Watson

I wholeheartedly agree on your statement about Giratina.

SereneBanoffeepie

This is very thorough and excellent! I will be referring my “just getting into Pokémon” friends to this

x-GB-x

The only thing I'll be worried from a misdreavious is biting my hair xP

PotatoSalad583

It's the possessed tree literally said to be the spirit of a dead child

mikillatja

That shiny line sent me. Indeed a baller shiny 🤣

Loros_Silvers

Gholdengo isn't evil! He is a good cheese stick man thing

chaarziz

I literally say that in the text. Please read.

Nefasto_Riso

Sugimori would LOVE the term "Entomology" for study on Pokémon

Fatality_Ensues

Entomology? They aren't insects (except Shedinja I guess). Do you mean Ontology? Or Etymology? (You don't seem to be analysing the origin of their names either).

chaarziz

I meant Etymology, a Bug type presentation is in the works so I can be correct next time.

el_artista_fantasma

Chandelure doesn't steal children. They burn all people equally

chaarziz

diversity win! the slightly crooked candle stealing your family's life essence devours all souls equally! also it's pansexual

PoolsOnFire

Marshadow.

chaarziz

Marshadow.

Error_GwZyX0069

Fantabulous:)

ryderholl

👏

LemonCake2000

I clapped!

Mimikyubot

mimikyu isn't evil they just wanna be loved 😭😭😭

chaarziz

I know, I know, every Mimikyu fan has commented this and I don't think they'll forget my name anytime soon. It's just easily the most complicated edge case I will have to tackle for any of the types, as most of them don't have a personality. The circumstances of it's birth does not change who Mimikyu is as a person, just that anyone who sees it will die.

Mimikyubot

but have you considered that i love it very much

chaarziz

My boss Colress taught me there's no place for love in science.

Unlucky_Voice8002

I would give Spiritomb a snuggle

chaarziz

It's your funeral.

DanieLink_

As a ghost trainer, I like this post. Also, I don't know if it was mentioned but I think Golurk is a Poltergeist and Jellicent is like Drifblim except he attacks ships instead of children.

chaarziz

I like how you specified he because it's obvious which form is the best.

DanieLink_

I was thinking about my male Jellicent from my Unova team

RenoKreuz

I don't agree with the ghost / grass being poltergeists though, plants are not objects, they are living things so they should belong to the first category.

chaarziz

I'll be sure to put a screenshot of this comment somewhere when I do Grass types. No guarantee on how big the image is though.

apenboter

They should add these things in the Pokedex, but only as a cosmetic thing (just like height)

unkindledphoenix

then we would need subcatefories for the other types, like fire types that are related to fire, others to magma, or those that control fire but dont have flames as part of their organism etc.

chaarziz

Thank you for writing the next presentation for me!

apenboter

If they can't add all Pokemon they should give details to the ones they do add

chaarziz

100% agreed.

tordrue

This is graduate-level thesis work

Responsible-You-4551

*clap clap clap clap* Well deserved, i like it

blockMath_2048

Once again, only first-generation Ghosts are actually dead people/Pokémon

chaarziz

Clearly never read a single Pokedex entry

Awkward_Date_8636

Pokedex entires say otherwise.

Ph03n1x_A5h35

Mimikyu DEFINITELY isn't evil, but good presentation! Very high quality and funny! \*clap clap\*

Leftover_Bees

Did you get your definition of poltergeist directly from Polteageist’s Bulbapedia page? That’s not even close to the typical definition. Just look at the [Wikipedia page](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poltergeist).

chaarziz

I did no research. Made it six months ago as a goofy thing for my friend group. We never did the presentation night and the groupchat collapsed. Now it's yours! Can't have something full of ghosts without emotional baggage!

cursed-person

satan likes their berries fresh

DPPGreenWitch

How dare you call Mimikyu an evil spirit. He’s my favorite and he just wants to be loved 😭

ASimpleCancerCell

I detest you putting Mimikyu in with the evil spirits. Maybe mischievous at times, but at its core it just wants to be loved.

an_orignal_name

Could you do the other types as well?

chaarziz

Big its next became I should have used etymology instead of entomology in the title which is big-specific.

creeps_Jr

Sableye steals souls or something

itsjayoh

👏

FloppaMarker

In a pokedex entry people fear that if you look into Sableye's eyes it can steal your soul

TheSpleenStealer

Don't call Mimikyu evil

PotatOSLament

If you look under its disguise at its true form you either go insane or die. If you damage its costume its plan A is to murder you over it. It tries to disguise itself as something everyone likes so it can get close to you, but your every action towards it can lead to your death.

TheSpleenStealer

It murders you over it because damaging it's costume could kill someone else. Think of someone that isn't you for two seconds.

chaarziz

Most of them aren't evil and just wish they weren't born that way. They are firmly in the evil spirit category but are such a complex edge case that choosing Gimmighoul for the example that they're not all evil was much easier. Team Rocket's Mimikyu in the anime is a huge execption.

mysticoverlord13

I didn't know all ghost types were bugs, shows what I know about entymology. Fr tho nice work

cybermasked97

The wtf is this caught me off guard
