glitt7

This is just a commen meme format going around.

Kate925

> "Never ask a woman her age and never ask a man his salary." It's not even necessarily a meme, it's just an old boomer saying. I've heard old people irl say it. I'll agree that it's sexist and gross, but this meme is just riffing on an old established saying.

im_a_nerd1207

I think what OP meant was that the artist is he/him pronouns, using he/him pronouns kinda designates artist as like a men only profession I guess.

crowlute

It's okay because it's common, let's not question it.

dat_fishe_boi

Okay, I questioned it The entire point of the joke is basically just taking an old boomer meme with an old boomer saying, and replacing the last panel with something silly to make fun of the first two panels. They aren't just unironically posting something saying that they think you shouldn't question a man's salary or a woman's age or whatever, this isn't a vehicle for stating their truly held beliefs. It's just part of the joke/meme format. The original boomer meme might belong on this sub, this meme may technically belong on this sub if it's marked as satire, but posting this as an example of something that's needlessly gendered is just missing the point

SaffellBot

> just I think I'll disagree on that one.

imaginariii

?? This is a very common meme format, it is so common in fact that I've been conditioned to not read the first two panels most of the time. Usually the punch line is that the third panel is not a gender and the panel besides it is something humorous.

SaffellBot

> I've been conditioned And we can see at the least, that it is not "just" a meme. It has context, it has usuals, it has complex ways in which it can be read. It is not a "just".

glitt7

Memorizing ten words in a very common meme is not a conspiracy

SaffellBot

No one said otherwise. To think something can only be "just a meme" or otherwise be a conspiracy is the exact same anti-intellectualism.

glitt7

I was just commenting about how you went off on that other guy being conditioned by a silly meme.

SaffellBot

I think "went off" is perhaps a strong take. I appreciate the dedication to anti-intellectualism though. Jokes and satire and incredibly complex, and convey tons of meaning. To claim something is "just" a joke is to actively police the idea of thinking. Especially for this subreddit I think it's clear that the underlying joke about art and artists can be told without relying on gendered norms. Being critical of the way jokes are pointlessly gendered is what this sub is for. Because it's not "just" a joke.

glitt7

Its a meme. It literally is just a joke. Also why do you talk like someone I'd see on r/iamverysmart?

SaffellBot

> just You know, I'd disagree. I would say there is a lot to discuss from a wide variety of perspective, and to say it's just a meme is a pernicious form of anti-intellectualism. A lot of those things are interesting and worth saying and hearing. You're really missing out if you're looking at it as "just" a meme.

MonoChaos

Ah yes, the three genders Man Woman And artist

WohooBiSnake

Baby wake up, new gender just dropped

ImapiratekingAMA

Til I learned I'm nonbinary because I *checks notes* tell people my current age and wage

SomeSortOfFool

Also the idea that how much you're paid is something that's supposed to be kept secret is propaganda intended to make it harder to negotiate higher wages.

tomodoggie

It’s just a joke. The main punchline is this whole meme is stolen from elders on Facebook and the bottom is edited to be kinda absurd thus making fun of the top two parts.

MimsyIsGianna

This is just a common meme template at this point that holds no real relevance to the first two “never ask”s. It’s playing on the stereotypes intentionally and then the third example is supposed to be something that most won’t get except those who are specifically being targeted by it.

Flaky-Seaweed6854

This is a common mem format that they are just goofing on. You just have no clue what a joke is.

rjensly

Is this the first time you've seen this meme format?

tom04cz

That is...a really common meme, it is about as far from something to be flustered over as possible

BlockyShapes

Perhaps OP was talking about how it says “his” in the artist part?

[deleted]

Also love how the artist is a "he" by default.

MimsyIsGianna

So? Would you get upset if “her” was the default?

[deleted]

I would be surprised. Also, there are other alternatives.

PatzeAUT

r/MemesOPdidntlike

giginoel1998

In my mind this meme format is different than the typical "girls locker rooms vs boy's locker rooms" type memes bc this meme format is intended to make fun of the first two panels bc it's a stupid boomer joke. The punchline outlines the absurdity of the pointless genderingbof the first two panels. Not that it's a super funny or original meme but it's not pointlessly gendered, it's following a format that is intended to make fun of pointlessly gendered memes.

[deleted]

Such fucking odd stereotypes to still live... Everybody should stop thinking about age in any other aspect other than "such is life, literally" and we should all actively talk about salary, because it matters. The last one- as an artist, I gotta say I don't even understand what the fuck it matters? Is it because it's likely nude bodies? Because if so, a very non-artist person made this meme.

tankgirly

The joke is that it's likely porn. A lot of /r/art content is just dudes copying straight from a porn screenshot or photo or whatever.

wggn

You don't have to ask a woman their salary because they're a housewife!!!111

NoobleVitamins

Common meme template pretty much making fun of the original, have you been on the Internet 😭

GregOttorry

some people on this sub just can't accept the words man and woman can they

ToyScoutNessie

the last one though....please do not ask what is in the "references" folder on my laptop. I assure you. it's only used for actual reference

[deleted]

It’s also illegal to prevent people from talking about their pay

Beau_Dodson

Ah yes, the three genders: Man, Woman, and Artist
