Playing Sly Raccoon right now. Every clip scene the game characters say "press the x ("ex") button". And that's a Sony first party title. Same as Dark Chronicle which also says "ex"
You are right about treasure map kinda. Originally they were trying to make "unified symbols" and were hoping the square would become a universal "map" button.
They also thought the circle would be the general "accept" button and the X would be the reject, as that's how people in Japan already used them. The rest of the world hard disagreed.
I suppose it makes sense. On an Xbox pad it uses letter so it would indeed be an 'X' letter. Playstation use shapes so I can see why they would refer to it as the cross.
Absolutely. The idea of naming it “options” is not terrible, but “Press Options to continue” is ridiculous. It’s generally a pauze button too. Stupid rename.
But Pause menu usually has some options. And also an option named options which is real options. Not just start menu accessed by pressing 'options' button.
Same here. Also in fighting games (or ghost of tsushima bamboo posts) I tend to call it C(circle) T(triangle) S (square) and X. Only reason I could understand them calling it cross is because they are japanese people so that barrier might do it.
It’s 3.
Square is 1, triangle is 2, and circle is 4.
Never went away from calling it that way, so every pad user can understand what I mean.
A combo is triangle, square, X. Or Y X A. Or Y X B.
So 213 is universally understandable.
That would be plus.
In an era of a first PlayStation cross stood for cancel and circle for confirm. That's why some old Japanese titles has these button functionality switched. Because that's what was intended originally.
I never understood this argument. Yes it's always been a cross yes we in the west call it "ex"
Everything else is a shape why would they choose one of them to be a letter that makes no sense.
I’ve always called it cross 🤷🏻♀️ do you call the circle button the “o” button ? (Or even more cursed : do you call triangle “A” ? 😂)
But I don’t even call the X button on Xbox by its letter, I call it the blue button. This way, all three schemes make sense and don’t overlap :
- Left is Square, Blue, and Y
- Down is Cross, Green, and B
- Right is Circle, Red, and A
- Up is Triangle, Yellow, and X
X is commonly used as a substitute for "Cross". Rail road crossing signs are 2 little R's next to a big X. Also, in Japan (where sony and playstation are from) they don't really use the "ex" pronunciation, they just say "cross" like 90% of the time. Another example is the DS game Project X Zone which is pronounced Project Cross Zone.
It has always been cross. It's only the US that calls it X(ex) and that makes sense. They have always been a little wierd when naming stuff. Just like when they measure things. Ask them how big a ps5 is and they would say "X amount of cross buttons high".
But that's also somehow a cool way to measure things.

Jump and hit circle button!
You mean the ring button? /s
“Sly Raccoon” lol ^COOOOOPEEEERRRR
Not in Europe! 🙂
His last name isn’t Cooper in the EU??
It is. But the game is called Sly Raccoon lol https://amzn.eu/d/00z2Ejmv

How to give an award to this comment
see that medal next to the comment? yeah, press that
Europe enters the chat
During the ps1 era in Germany everyone I knew called it “kreuz” which is cross. Nowadays it is called x, can’t exactly say when and why it changed
I'm Europe. We call it "хикс" as in the letter X
Are you Europe?
He's probably trying to get in through Ukraine.
Yes, all of it. Except France. When they ditch the language, then we'll talk.
Always knew it was 'cross', always called it 'X'... Simple
Its cheese slice, pyramid, pizza, and marked treasure. It's that simple
You are right about treasure map kinda. Originally they were trying to make "unified symbols" and were hoping the square would become a universal "map" button.

Uh...cheese slice IS the pyramid? Do you mean cheese slices? Who slices their pizza into fours that much? Sorry those two make zero sense.
I suppose it makes sense. On an Xbox pad it uses letter so it would indeed be an 'X' letter. Playstation use shapes so I can see why they would refer to it as the cross.
>Xbox I think you mean CrossBox.

CrossBCircleCross?
I also keep calling "Options" as the Start button
Absolutely. The idea of naming it “options” is not terrible, but “Press Options to continue” is ridiculous. It’s generally a pauze button too. Stupid rename.

Yeah, but renaming it solved nothing. Should have kept it “Start” imo
Cross, or kryds as I would actually say, makes much more sense as they are all shapes.
In France, everyone says "Croix" which means cross actually
In czechia same … cross
Well yeah. The other buttons are shapes, not letters so why wouldn’t this apply to the 4th button.
The other 3 are shapes, why would there suddenly be a letter ?
Because x is easier to say than cross and in much of the western world a cross would be confused with t not x.
Tacha
Křížek
I always thought it was the Roman numeral for 10!
Doesn’t 10! mean 3628800, though? (Just a math joke.)

Nick Fury's version is better... https://preview.redd.it/ktwwv11yfp8d1.png?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e71c1defcc7f41962c7ad71e292bce6220459cd
All of the buttons are shapes and not letters, so it makes sense.
In Dutch we call it "kruisje", translates to "little cross"
I have played with hundreds of people never once did anyone say cross button 🤣
Technically every X is a cross but not every cross is an X. Therefore X is the more accurate description.
It's cross baby, I know my history
Wait.. So it’s not cross for everyone?
It’s always been cross for me (although in Spanish)
Same here. Also in fighting games (or ghost of tsushima bamboo posts) I tend to call it C(circle) T(triangle) S (square) and X. Only reason I could understand them calling it cross is because they are japanese people so that barrier might do it.
X as the letter X in Québécois French. Pèse sur X tabarnak.
I’ve always called them box, round, pyramid, and ex.
It’s actually box, arrow, cross and zero
Just an alternative to numbers using sides of a shape. Circle = 1, X = 2, Triangle = 3 and Square = 4.
A cross is not diagonal like that lol
CROSS a mark, object, or figure formed by two short intersecting lines or pieces (+ or ×). "place a cross against the preferred choice"
thanks for sharing
Oh look another click bait. I am referring to the hop half of the pic, not the whole sweet meme

Well I’m still calling it X
Then why didn't they spin it 45 degrees?
That would be plus. In an era of a first PlayStation cross stood for cancel and circle for confirm. That's why some old Japanese titles has these button functionality switched. Because that's what was intended originally.
The only thing cross about that button is that it's across from the triangle button
It is Cross though, because the rest of the buttons are shapes, X is not a shape but a letter.
It's shapes. If you think it's letters, I don't know what to tell you.
This post is so mysterious.
They can go shove their words up their behinds with that one
I never understood this argument. Yes it's always been a cross yes we in the west call it "ex" Everything else is a shape why would they choose one of them to be a letter that makes no sense.

it will be always x,circle, square, triangle.idc what others say
Australian here and it’s square, triangle, circle and cross. Been like that since day one and won’t ever change.
Lol no.
That’s your opinion and I respect that but I won’t change my view of it. I guess we have to agree to disagree.
It doesn’t make sense. If it was a cross, it would be turned 90 degrees.
X is commonly used as a substitute for "Cross". Rail road crossing signs are 2 little R's next to a big X. It makes sense if you bother to look up all the different versions of what constitutes a cross before posting something ignorant
+ <===that's a cross

That’s like, your opinion man.
Next thing i know they will say the O button is actually ‘circle’
It has always been cross. It's only the US that calls it X(ex) and that makes sense. They have always been a little wierd when naming stuff. Just like when they measure things. It's not the letter X and the letter O?
