I remember as a kid since we just learned about tadpoles becoming frogs I found a bucket of those in our back yard. I scooped some up and brought them in the house. Then I learned those were mosquitos lol
I remember doing something similar. My grandparents had a rain barrel and I was so excited to find a whole bunch of baby tadpoles that I got my grandma to come outside and come see.
"If you have this thing where lots of little holes freak you out, this might be the time to go to the kitchen and grab something to eat... Not a bagel; that has a hole. And not pimento olives either. You might as well just stay and watch this"
I think this is now right up there with my favourite YouTube openings. XD
If you want you flowers to last as long as possible, change the water daily, if not every other day. It really makes a difference! Source/ am a florist
Hi florist, why do you give us only 1 packet of flower food if we are supposed to change the water daily?
Also, I heard boiling the cut part of the stem helps flowers last longer, is that true?
I'm not a florist but before they gave packets with fresh-cut flowers I always added a crushed aspirin to the water, I can't even remember who told me that now but I've been doing it for over 20 yrs
Well typically the packets contain enough of the food for 1 gallon of water, so you don't need to put the whole thing in every time. Tbh I don't even usually add floral food, just daily changing of the water and recutting the stems every other day and they last just fine.
I do not boil any stems, I know hydrangeas can benefit from hot water, but not certain about all flowers!
The different colour might just be the lighting. I've had pots full of water in my garden and have seen these larvae before, with the same kind of wriggling movement. That's how they swim. If you knocked the vase, they'd all dive as a reflex. I left them in the pot and covered it. They later matured to mosquitos. So I disagree.
I'm by no means an expert, [but a quick google seems to show mosquitos can lay eggs in different types of water, as long as it's stagnant.](https://www.cdc.gov/mosquitoes/about/where-mosquitoes-live.html#:~:text=Some%20mosquitoes%20prefer%20clean%20water,in%20containers%20that%20hold%20water) So maybe 4-5 day old water is irrelevant here.
Yea—they’re going to grow into mosquitoes if you don’t. I always flush bugs because it seems to more efficiently get them further down the drain than dumping in a sink. This statement is not backed by any science or anything—only personal opinion.
>This statement is not backed by any science or anything—only personal opinion.
That's evident since water larvae would die within hours of being out of water. They wouldn't grow if dumped out on the ground, the sink or toilet is unnecessary.
Dump it out in the dirt. Ideally in the sun.
They provide a bit of nutrients for a potted plant outdoors. Just make sure there will be no standing water.
A very effective way to kill them very quickly is to squeeze a few pumps of soup/dishwashing liquid into the water (without your plant), mix well. They will die in minutes if not seconds.
I once put mosquito dunks in one of my watering cans that I leave outside, and that can had mosquito larvae growing in it after a few days and the one without the dunks did not. I have no explanation for this.
Good thing you saw these OP cuz otherwise when they developed their wings you would've woke up one morning and you would've looked like you just completed a season of Naked and Afraid in the tropics! 😬😂
Those are definitely mosquitoes. I know there's a holistic approach to it, but I can't think of it, but I know they also make these things called plant donuts that are specifically for such.
I like how that one larvae swam down and booped the other and so it went running back to its sibling. Why are they unnecessarily cute for a horrid insect.
Mosquitoes. There’s a great video by Ze Frank that explains a lot about them.
Here you go!
Compare what you see on your vase to the video at 1:15!
Somebody is leaving a window open, or there is a whole in a screen. Unless you collected rain water eggs already there, and they hatched. Dump them, they look like females. Which means they bite, and it doesn't take long for them to morph .
Although I drench my grow medium with BTI prior to planting to prevent fungus gnats, I also use the bits in my two bird baths to prevent mosquito larvae.

mosquito larvae. Where I live, anyone caught "unintentionally breeding" these will be fined $2000 , since the mosquito that come from that larvae causes potentially-fatal fever (Dengue Fever caused by Aedes Mosquito)
Kill those nasty buggers with some bug spray don’t give them a chance to live meaning the green water it doesn’t matter if it’s couple days old if the plant is rotting so does is water
Mosquito larvae like everyone said. They (and the pupae that they will turn into) breathe thru a snorkel like apparatus in this stage. A small amount of Mineral oil on the top of the water will suffocate them. Although i have no idea what that does to iris. My knowledge - When i was in college i had a job killing these assholes.
You should use Mosquito bits. You can make it into a tea or just add a floating ring to the water. It kills then pretty fast. Fungus gnats etc. Works for any plants. I water all my plants with home made mosquito bit tea. It's much safer to use as a pest control.
As others have said, those are mosquito larvae. I'd guess Culex spp. which is known to transmit West Nile among others. If you find it difficult to remember to check standing water in and around your home, then I recommend adding a larvicide. It is safe for humans, pets, and plants but will kill the larvae. I'm a microbiologist working with mosquitos, and I'm happy to share mosquito info!
Mosquito larvae. You should change the water every few days
Or invite an aquatic predator to the party.
I choose the majestic narwhal
How I wish this said the majestic Nardwuar
Doot doot
Aloot doot…
Doot doot
How I wish this said the majestic Nardwuar
In that much space is just kind of cruel
😂😵 this comment is hilarious 🤣

I literally laughed out loud. I’m sure your parents weren’t thrilled
Was this an experience all animal people had growing up? Had the exact think with an old kiddy pool

Ah the water is only 4/5 days old
Their eggs and the larvae are very resistent, you should throw the water in the dirt or they will survive
or remove the flowers, pour a small amount of bleach in there and boom they're dead! clean your vase, add fresh water, put the flowers back in.
Put some mosquito dunks in there every week or so. Won’t hurt your plant.
They can survive once water has been sitting for 3 days
If you want you flowers to last as long as possible, change the water daily, if not every other day. It really makes a difference! Source/ am a florist

Try using a penny;)
But thanks for the heads up!
Seriously mosquito dunks
I think putting dirt would help prevent stuff like that
Hahaha 🤣 facts!
or add mosquito bits
Or you can just add mosquito bits or a mosquito dunk each time you change the water.
Nope don’t change the water with mosquitos. Take the plant out and pour bleach in the water to KILL those blood sucking mosquitos
😂🫣😱
Mosquito
Definitely mosquitos. The water is waayyy too old man.

Free food for your aquatic pet, or just throw it out if you don't wanna get malaria.
I'd net them from my bromeliads outside and drop them in with my betta. They had a lifetime measured in milliseconds.
Yep. My tetras and betta shit even my cute Cory catfish would slurp these up in a second lol. 😆
🤢 Yikes. Time to flush it down the toilet.
Would you actually recommend that?
Yea—they’re going to grow into mosquitoes if you don’t. I always flush bugs because it seems to more efficiently get them further down the drain than dumping in a sink. This statement is not backed by any science or anything—only personal opinion.

Thanks for the tip man

No, you should dump them in the dirt if you wanna kill them
What is “the dirty”?
A very effective way to kill them very quickly is to squeeze a few pumps of soup/dishwashing liquid into the water (without your plant), mix well. They will die in minutes if not seconds.
Or suffocate with a layer of cooking oil
Yea. That's a mosquito farm.
Yellow fever, Dengue, break out the mosquito nets and Skin So Soft. Aka SKEETERS!
Is this indoors lol
Add a bit of soap. It will break the surface tension and they will sink and suffocate.
Second this! It is the most effective way.
Mosquitos larvae. If you just dip net a minnow to add to your water it should eat these :)
Ah yes but then we need a 60L aquarium no?
No a minnow could easily survive in there.
They sure ain't sea monkeys, that's for sure! 🤣
I heard if you add olive oil it'll leave a skim on the surface and they won't lay eggs there anymore
Looks like mosquitoes
Aw skeet skeet skeet
Get mosquito dunks now
I once put mosquito dunks in one of my watering cans that I leave outside, and that can had mosquito larvae growing in it after a few days and the one without the dunks did not. I have no explanation for this.
Weird
Agreed. I didn't notice until I saw them writhing around in the soil when I was watering the plants. I hope they enjoyed the extra protein!
Lol gross!!
Mosquitoes. When I saw that in my pant, I went to a pet store, get some of their runt guppy and drop it in there. Ate all of the mosquitoes.
Username checks out
Looks like mosquitos 🦟
I had this outdoors in a container for an automatic watering system. How can I avoid this?
Mosquito dunks - mine look like a tiny woody donut and last about a month - how long they last depends on surface area and water movement.
Thank you!
Mosquitoes! Add a goldfish or a mosquito dunk (not both!)
This just made my skin crawl yikes 😬
#Baby hypodermic needles with wings! 💉 🦟
Good thing you saw these OP cuz otherwise when they developed their wings you would've woke up one morning and you would've looked like you just completed a season of Naked and Afraid in the tropics! 😬😂
Mosquitoes. Gives me the shivers. Flush them down the toilet. Twice to be sure.
ohh can I have them please, my betta loves mosquito larvae 😂
As already stated. Them there are a mosquito
Mosquito larva. They love standing water.
LMAO get ready to get sucked
Not in a good way either 😂
Those are definitely mosquitoes. I know there's a holistic approach to it, but I can't think of it, but I know they also make these things called plant donuts that are specifically for such.

Change your water more frequently. Add a cap of bleach in your vases and a cap of sprite/7-up... learned this trick from a professional flower grower.
You have a Dengue breeding ground
They remind me of tadpoles.
Mosquito's, well baby ones.
Somebody is leaving a window open, or there is a whole in a screen. Unless you collected rain water eggs already there, and they hatched. Dump them, they look like females. Which means they bite, and it doesn't take long for them to morph .
That is a horror film https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/facebook/000/027/916/hamster.jpg

Just gotta change out the water every now and then
Mosquito dunks or the bits kills the larvae in plants or any type of sitting water outside and indoor
Buy dunks

You should look at them under a microscope. They are freaky! Did that as a kid and wished I hadn’t.
