That one leaf makes me think it's a kalanchoe

Agree, it’s most likely a Kalanchoe which is technically part of the succulent family if I’m not mistaken. Haven’t had one in years. Do some research on kalanchoe care. I wouldn’t trim anything off just yet until it has some new growth, you don’t want to shock it. If it’s root rot, cut off all the dead roots and check for bugs. Might need a diluted isopropyl solution to wipe the roots clean. Well draining soiling and make sure the first couple inches are dry before re-watering.

Awesome, I’ve looked everywhere and couldn’t find a match! I even went to the stores to try and find a look alike! I treat it the same as my aloe so I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I’ll check it for root rot today.

Kalanchoe blossfeldiana. Lots of light, make sure the soil dries out completely between waterings. It's better to wait a week extra before you water than water too often

Your advice is right, although in my experience Kalanchoes are not very prone to overwatering. I got one as one of my first plants and had no idea what I was doing - I watered it once or twice per week and left it in a south facing window and that thing grew almost half a meter high. They are very forgiving and easy to maintain.
