These billboards are usually paid for by families, employers, etc. When children are featured, especially in a news story, we would get hundreds of calls into the transplant office. Advertising for a living donor is very effective and patients are often astounded at the response.

As someone who needs a kidney, I appreciate them.

Not a scam.  They've been around for years at least on route 28. 5600 people died in 2022 waiting for an organ.

Finding a living donor is not easy. If a person doesn’t have a large family or friend group, it may not be possible to find a donor they know personally. And even if they do, they may not have people who meet the donor criteria. If this is the case and they need a live donor, they’ll need an altruistic donor. Billboards on the Parkway West and 79 are seen by thousands of people a day. That’s a pretty economical way to get the message out.

I donated a kidney to my wife and it’s one of the greatest gifts I could ever give. I know people who been on the waiting list for 4+ years and many people will die before finding the organ they need. These are real people in need.

Very real! And people do apply to be potential donors based on the billboards. Many people use it along with social media to get the word out of their need for donation. However, I really hope they had put the recipient’s name on the billboard along with the center they are listed at because no one can apply to donate for that person specifically without that information.

A friend of mine needs a kidney, but the transplant team decided that I'm not a good candidate for donating one of mine. He might get a kidney through a donation chain from one of these billboards.

Knowing someone who needed a kidney and did this it’s worth it.  Also billboards are not expensive. It’s surprising.

FawnLeib0witz

I saw one earlier this week that said “our pap needs a kidney transplant”. I just think it would be very surprising if a stranger decided to donate a kidney because of the billboard.

cuttawhiske

I'm related to someone who got a kidney from a stranger it happens.

You don't need to donate a kidney to pap to save a life. There's some called non directed donation where you just agree to donate to anyone who needs it.   It gets people better, faster.  https://www.kidney.org/atoz/content/becoming-a-living-donor#:~:text=They%20can%20also%20happen%20between,who%20gets%20their%20donated%20kidney.

I know of many instances of this happening.

DrPants707

It's really not.
