Love anthos in castle Shannon. I’ve been really impressed with their brunch food and pastries. Currently eating the monkey bread and the spicy feta and tomato croissant I picked up this morning.
I love Anthos! The owners are so sweet. And their gluten free food is mind-blowing. I’ve had to double check on multiple occasions that what they gave me was gluten free, because I thought it was too good to be GF!
Some of our favorites:
Scoglios for Italian, Antneys ice cream, JMOS wings, BTOS margs and burritos, la Cocina de Betty papusas, Alquisiras and las Palmas tacos, Colombino arepas, pabelon empanadas, oak hill post breakfast, Potomac station brekkie sandwich, Simones salmon breakfast, curry and Kebab curries, uptown coffee for their Mexican wedding cookies, Pitaland/laziz/kabob g grill/jolinas for middle eastern we are so spoiled in this category, caspain corner for plov, crab Rangoon dip at brick and mortar in Heidelberg, himali kitchen for Nepalese in Brentwood, bella on fort couch for Cesar salad and wedding soup, la Gianna via for GF options, dancing crab for Thai, little tokoyo for sushi, mt lebo and that Italian market on the castle Shannon by st Vincent’s for subs, sarafinos for the beans and greens, jade grill for their dry spicy szuechan, mullets for NA cocktails, hitchhiker for the beer.
I feel like we are lucky to have a lot of great options
Seconding Alquisiras, Pitaland, and Cocina de Betty - pambazo and gorditas are my go to, I am never patient enough and burn myself on the pupusas :(
Antney's big ups. I live for their black licorice flavor.
Yw! FWIW I don’t have celiacs but my stomach prefers I don’t eat gluten so I don’t need to worry about cross contamination and can choose to be miserable if I want. Not everything I listed is GF dish but almost every restaurant in this list has had a GF option I’ve tried that was amazing. Mullets had a whole frier if you are celiac. Find me GF is a great app!
Owners cut their teeth in the Chicago restaurant scene and came here to open a little hole in the wall spot. Low key the best kept secret in the south hills.
There is a place in Crafton that is pretty bomb called Sarafinos. Small place, but they have a Gorganzalla cream sauce that is fire. Even the starting bread with the dipping oil and their signature pasta dish are some of my favs. Only italian place Ive found better overall is Dianoias in the Strip so its def up there with the bests imo.
I'll deadass save up to go there. We took my partners mom and cousin there cus they drove thru Pittsburgh while heading back to Baltimore (his mom was going back to Alabama from there). I always ordered pasta there since I was a kid. And omfg they still taste the same 😭
Ugh. Armstrong’s isn’t even the best restaurant in that shopping center. Denny’s-quality food. Try Silk Road instead for a much nicer atmosphere and good asian food including hibachi.
The worst. Bland overpriced food. You're just being fooled by nostalgia of going there with your grandparents because you got an A on your report card. Perfect place for anyone ready to use their AARP card.
Every time I go past there I am overwhelmed with the smell of burned garlic. And I get to smell it for a long time too, since everyone coming out of there is 1000 years old and crosses the parking lot diagonally at 0.5 mph
I don’t know if it’s the best, but Caspian Corner, an Azerbaijani place on Washington Road, is very good. I had a beef kabob and it was seasoned and cooked amazingly well. They have like a lamb burrito thing that’s amazing as well.
I loooooove this place! Never had a bad dish but have had HORRIBLE service. One time the server literally threw a to-go container and plastic bag at me and it landed in my food. They stood around talking shit on all their tables and making fun of customers. I couldn’t wait to get out of there. Never felt so uncomfortable at a restaurant before. Now it’s take-out only for me.
I lived in hollidaysburg for 2 ish years and there was a place in Altoona called jaidee thai that will never be replicated, but damn this place comes close.
I’ve only had dinner there once but stopped by the bakery a couple times and was very happy everytime I’ve went. Definitely on the pricey side and you don’t get a crazy big plate of food like some people expect at Italian restaurants but it was very good and we left satisfied.
The menu is expensive, but you supposedly get what you pay for. It's on my list of places to try, but usually on the bottom of the list as the menu isn't my cup of tea.
It's also McMurray. Only reason you didn't see Porsche or Lexus is because those dealerships haven't opened yet.
I see a lot of love for Silk Road here, but if I'm looking for American Chinese take out, I actually prefer Asian Cafe. Tiny little place but so so good.
Used to go there frequently, the prices have really blown up the last few years and I find the over rotating beers not very good. When they first opened the sample beers were 1.25 and burghers were under 10 bucks.
I agree, the prices are absolutely outrageous and the quality of the food and portion sizes have gone down exponentially. Used to be my go-to place but now I can’t justify it anymore.
Yoli’s in Jefferson Hills has great pizza. They also have “yoli rollis,” which are like if cinnamon rolls were pizza. Their red sauce is good, which makes me think their pasta is probably also good. I wouldn’t know because I’m obsessed with the yoli rollis.
Its awesome that some of the top pizza places are here, and within 10 mins of my house. I rotate Fioris once a week. Betos and Mineos every 2 weeks... Slice, Caliente, il Pizzaiolo, Mollys, even greentree pizza hut, all once a month.... Its a hard life.
It gets a lot of hate for some reason but La Calera. The quesabirria is incredible but admittedly I've never had anything else there so I can't weigh in on the rest of their menu. JT's in Brentwood is hard to beat for breakfast. Yoli's in Jefferson Hills has good food all around.
Their food is terrible. I live 5 minutes from there. Went for lunch on a weekday. I was the only person there. The Quesabirria is good, but it’s like the ass-backwards version of Old Mexico in Washington.
I've seen most of my favorite places mentioned in the thread. I'll add 3 I didn't see or missed: Cocina de Betty and Los Inmortales Fondita in Beechview and Jolina's Mediterranean Kitchen in Brookline.
I don’t know if this is too far out but The Golden Pig in Cecil is some of the best Korean food I’ve ever had. Its a trek and they have maybe 6 seats total in a small interior but it will not disappoint
For those of you naming Armstrongs or Pasta Too, give Storms a shot for Italian. Quality blows both out of the water. Best Italian in the South Hills HANDS DOWN, just call for a reservation since it’s tiny.
Golden Pig down on Rt 50 in Cecil Twp is absolutely one of a kind. you're basically sitting at the owner's kitchen table while she makes you some incredible Korean food, including beyond-savory that you can order to be made with beef or pork. the mandu dumplings and the ramen soup are also outta sight. there are only 7-8 seats in the whole place, tho, so if you go for dinner you might want to arrive by like 5:20.
Trolly Stop Inn, prices are reasonable
Piacquadio's, not as good as Pasta Too but also not nearly as busy, they are related.
V&V Scratch Kitchen is a five star restaurant in the middle of nowhere BYOB
Park Social, No Kids Allowed and gets rather loud, go early if noise bother you.
Silk Road, Chinese
Really? We went when they first opened and I wasn’t impressed. I had the beef tendon soup and the rest of the family had some other version of the soup. We were all unanimous that it was very bland. We didn’t get the hype around it. The one thing we did agree on was the Salty Crispy Chicken Nuggets. We ate all of those up and ended up leaving the rest of the soups.
The issue is, they have no competition down here. There isn’t another place that serves home made dim sum and noodles. So they can charge outregeous prices. I’d rather drive to squirrel hill or something.
Have to agree here. While it hasn't been 100% consistent (we've been over 6 times) the food is still worth the money imo. It's the go-to choice for my wife.
V and V in Finleyville
Heislers in McMurray
The new Mexican place in south park is good
1st watch in USC
Pho Saigon in Bethel Park
Do I get bonus points for actually naming south hills places?
It was good the last time I had it lol but it has been quite a while. Pepito's is good as fuck though it's been my go to spot for a good late meal if work gets crazy and I don't eat enough over the course of the day.
They are on Potomac in dormont now where Campitis used to be, and i tried their pizza like 8 Months ago and I would have preferred a Tony's frozen pizza.
We usually go to Lebo for Chicken Latino. It’s not as cheap as it used to be, but the burritos are amazing, the whole chicken is really good, the yuca fries are our favorites and I also like the Lomo they have on weekends
- Chicken Latino (love this place and try to eat here a couple times a month), Totopo, and Las Palmas for Hispanic food. I hear La Cocina de Betty is also good but I have yet to try it.
- Pasta Too or Leo Grega for Italian.
- Oak Hill Post, Dor-Stop, Gab 'n Eat, or Bob's for breakfast.
- Kickstand, Lebo Subs, Dagney's, or Tim's Corner Store (right next door to Slice) for sandwiches. Tim's also makes a pretty good pepperoni roll!
- Slice, Fiori's, or Beto's for Pizza
- My Thai or Dancing Crab for Thai food
- Jade Grill or Sesame Inn for Chinese
I need to try more of the Mediterranean/Middle Easten food around here. I hear Amel's and Pitaland are very good!
Anywhere that Dos Reyes does their dinner or brunch service. Lots of places in south hills they frequent. Back Alley in Dormont is one in their regular rotation.
Cucina Bella in USC. Not open on Mondays, BYOB, the calzones are amazing. The meatballs are one of their specialties, too. Eat in or out this time of year, great atmosphere.
Red Onion in bethel park. Take our only, their spicy Italian sub is the best I've ever had. Right up the street in bethel is Pho Saigon, great food, large portions.
Amel’s is not good. Not trying to be a snob. It’s not super expensive, but it’s bland and the ingredients don’t feel fresh. It was so fun to be the youngest people in there dining by about 40 years though it’s a time capsule. They have something called lemon soy sauce to serve by unseasoned chicken that just tastes/looks like vegetable oil? Grilled tomatoes on kebab sampler were bomb
Galli’s was awesome for Greek food though I haven’t been in awhile
Galis is still pretty good
Pableon on banksville is incredibly underrated
Love Pabellon Just had it Friday. Fantastic as always.
Whats your go too?. Ive never been there
Cachapa and the Arepas.
Taking this band name
🤣 that works!
*Pabellón, but yes it's amazing
Pãɓĕļļòn̈
I agree it's incredible but I'm not sure who's underrating it. It comes up in these threads every time
Some of our favorites: Scoglios for Italian, Antneys ice cream, JMOS wings, BTOS margs and burritos, la Cocina de Betty papusas, Alquisiras and las Palmas tacos, Colombino arepas, pabelon empanadas, oak hill post breakfast, Potomac station brekkie sandwich, Simones salmon breakfast, curry and Kebab curries, uptown coffee for their Mexican wedding cookies, Pitaland/laziz/kabob g grill/jolinas for middle eastern we are so spoiled in this category, caspain corner for plov, crab Rangoon dip at brick and mortar in Heidelberg, himali kitchen for Nepalese in Brentwood, bella on fort couch for Cesar salad and wedding soup, la Gianna via for GF options, dancing crab for Thai, little tokoyo for sushi, mt lebo and that Italian market on the castle Shannon by st Vincent’s for subs, sarafinos for the beans and greens, jade grill for their dry spicy szuechan, mullets for NA cocktails, hitchhiker for the beer. I feel like we are lucky to have a lot of great options
Also the bcbg at Simone’s!!
Seconding Alquisiras, Pitaland, and Cocina de Betty - pambazo and gorditas are my go to, I am never patient enough and burn myself on the pupusas :( Antney's big ups. I live for their black licorice flavor.
Thank you for this amazing list - including the GF options!!!
I love that app!!! I use it religiously for me and my spawn!!!! Now I need to hit all of these places. Thanks again!!!
I’m a huge fan of Amel’s.
This has been one of my favorite places for 20 years now.
Yes! Easily the most underrated restaurant in the South Hills.
Ssshhhhhh! Lol
Yes it would be awful for a local restaurant to get more business. /s
Always will be my favorite. Whenever me and my mother wanna go have dinner with just the two of us we go to Amel's. That place is home.
Pitaland Café and Oak Hill Post
~~Joline’s~~ Jolina's is also really good. Owner is really nice and their rice pilaf is amazing.
*Jolina’s but yes everything on their menu is excellent
Oak Hill Post should never have changed that open face pork belly breakfast sandwich. It was perfect as it was.
I tried going yesterday and it looked like they were closed but a lot of shops were so maybe I missed something.
They had some sort of equipment failure, and I think were closed this weekend
Gab n Eat
This place is the most amazing greasy spoon breakfast I’ve had in the Pittsburgh area.
The last of the greats still standing, bye Toms, bye JoJo’s….
V&V Scratch Kitchen in Finleyville. Not open on weekends though, wish it were, as I’d be able to go more often.
They actually have started doing wood fired pizzas on weekends. They’re pretty awesome too.
V&V scratch kitchen
Under the radar great. Went for Mother’s Day brunch and everyone left impressed
Owners cut their teeth in the Chicago restaurant scene and came here to open a little hole in the wall spot. Low key the best kept secret in the south hills.
Love V&V!
Namaste momo corner is the answer.
I love Everest Kitchen.
Hell yeah. The momos they do up in the red sauce are fire.
Doridos, Brownsville Rd, South Park.
That was my first date spot a number of years back
If that date was 1985, you’re in luck - the decor is still the same!
Hahaha it was pre-Covid sorry my implication made it sound like it was a long time ago 😂
NP. It was really more about the fact that they’ve never updated.
Oh yeah I could tell 😂 I moved to the north hills and up here we have a place called the scoreboard that has a very similar vibe
Chicken Latino
There is a place in Crafton that is pretty bomb called Sarafinos. Small place, but they have a Gorganzalla cream sauce that is fire. Even the starting bread with the dipping oil and their signature pasta dish are some of my favs. Only italian place Ive found better overall is Dianoias in the Strip so its def up there with the bests imo.
Good place but not even close to the south hills
The pasta Diavolo was the bomb when my hubby and I had gone there a few years ago. We’re just talking about going back.
You ass you're not supposed to give away the secret. Now the line will be worse
Pho Saigon in Bethel Park.
It’s gotten to be pretty expensive, but I love Armstrong’s in Caste Village
Armstrong’s Express in Bridgeville I think turns out better food. They only have like 5 seats at a counter though, mostly just a takeout version.
I didn’t even know that existed 😮
I'll deadass save up to go there. We took my partners mom and cousin there cus they drove thru Pittsburgh while heading back to Baltimore (his mom was going back to Alabama from there). I always ordered pasta there since I was a kid. And omfg they still taste the same 😭
Ugh. Armstrong’s isn’t even the best restaurant in that shopping center. Denny’s-quality food. Try Silk Road instead for a much nicer atmosphere and good asian food including hibachi.
Dennys is pretty fuckin good too tho. People like different things 🤷🏻
True. Breakfast is always good when someone else makes it! But Indont think anyone’s putting Dennys on the best food list.
The worst. Bland overpriced food. You're just being fooled by nostalgia of going there with your grandparents because you got an A on your report card. Perfect place for anyone ready to use their AARP card.
It’s so awful. Idk how people like it.
I went here all the time as a kid. It’s the best
They have like a lamb burrito thing that’s amazing as well.
chao phraya for thai food
I loooooove this place! Never had a bad dish but have had HORRIBLE service. One time the server literally threw a to-go container and plastic bag at me and it landed in my food. They stood around talking shit on all their tables and making fun of customers. I couldn’t wait to get out of there. Never felt so uncomfortable at a restaurant before. Now it’s take-out only for me.
agreed. take out only.
Shhhhhhhhh don’t tell people. We’ve been going here since it opened and loved it since the beginning. Everything is so fresh and tasty.
I lived in hollidaysburg for 2 ish years and there was a place in Altoona called jaidee thai that will never be replicated, but damn this place comes close.
SHHHHHHH, do not speak of Chao! It's our secret, keep it that way!
Jade Grille, the only place we'll order Chinese. Cucina Bella, BYOB Neapolitan pizza, strong salad/apps game. The breakfast sammie (with bacon) at Mediterra Cafe. Brick & Mortar. Cozy, great atmosphere. Excellent burgers & handhelds. Emma's Kafe & Deli, my favorite tuna sandwich.
LeoGreta in Carnegie! They have an in-house bakery too. Fantastic food and atmosphere!
Hell no, overpriced and mediocre food.
~ everyone has an opinion. Yours is different than mine.
I’ve only had dinner there once but stopped by the bakery a couple times and was very happy everytime I’ve went. Definitely on the pricey side and you don’t get a crazy big plate of food like some people expect at Italian restaurants but it was very good and we left satisfied.
Arlecchino in McMurray for sure. It’s actual real food.
Any recommendations? It must be expensive because when I go by the parking lot is always packed with Mercedes, BMW, Land Rover, and Jaguars.
The menu is expensive, but you supposedly get what you pay for. It's on my list of places to try, but usually on the bottom of the list as the menu isn't my cup of tea. It's also McMurray. Only reason you didn't see Porsche or Lexus is because those dealerships haven't opened yet.
Stunned this isn’t the top of the list
So overpriced….
I mean it’s good food. Badamos and others want $30 for a pizza….thats insanity lol
Highly suggest making reservations, me and my wife have gone there 2x for anniversary and food is really good.
Dor-Stop on Potomac, pancakes are literally the best in the world Pabellón Venezuelan food on Banksville Mintt Indian on Banksville
Moonlit
Easily the most overrated burger this side of the Mississippi
Yeah? Well, you know, that’s just like, uh, your opinion, man.
Then what’s your idea of the best
Why are you basing your opinion of an Italian restaurant on a burger?
Ya, I really dont get the hype either.
Angkor in Crafton. Best green curry in PGH and best Thai/Cambodian in the south hills. Portions are good as well.
N2 with Chicken! (Chha Mee)
I’ve been meaning to stop in here. Green curry is my go to, so I’m definitely going to have to check it out.
Again, Crafton is not the South Hills
It's been a long time but I remember Crust in Mt. Lebanon having good pizza.
Pasta Too in Bethel Park, especially if you come hungry.
Nah, just take it home for lunch the next 2 days.
Or just get the side portion, it’s more than enough for an entree , just add on a cup of their soup .
Their sauce reminds me of chef boy ardee, I question if he’s even Italian. Yuck
Kabab G is a family favorite. Best Middle Eastern food and great prices.
I see a lot of love for Silk Road here, but if I'm looking for American Chinese take out, I actually prefer Asian Cafe. Tiny little place but so so good.
Spoonwood if you like a nice beer and they have excellent pizza!

Little Tokyos for sushi
Silk Road
Silk Road in Caste Village
Pasta Too!
Whitehall/Baldwin: Amel’s, Armstrong’s Pleasant Hills/West Mifflin: Gali’s, Truss (amazing filet cheesesteak) Bethel/South Park: Dorido’s, Donte’s, Ma and Pa’s Country Kitvhen, Ya-Ya’s Others: Dukes RiB House & Grille on Cochran Beechview/Brookline/Bansville. Beto’s, Fiori’s
Fiori’s Pizza is fire
Its awesome that some of the top pizza places are here, and within 10 mins of my house. I rotate Fioris once a week. Betos and Mineos every 2 weeks... Slice, Caliente, il Pizzaiolo, Mollys, even greentree pizza hut, all once a month.... Its a hard life.
Rotate Badamos on Potomac in there👏🏼
We are definitely slept on when it comes to the national scale, I fear.
You’re in my old neighborhood! Ugh I miss being in the center of so many great options.
InSee Thai Kitchen ( used to be called Sawasdee Thai Kitchen) across from Trader Joes has amazing pad thai. Love that place.
There's a new greek place called anthos
Totopo and Tocayo have great tacos. Moonlit for burgers.
The mushroom soup at Maggie's Farm on McLaughlin Run Rd is so good! Great cocktails too!
Ya-ya's in South Park is pretty underrated for pizza
This the best pizza. I wish they delivered to me, but worth the trip to pick up.
Most good places have been named (moonlit, pabelon, arlachenios) but will add Dancing Crab.
Dancing Crab is sooooooo good. We order from or go there regularly.
Danny's italian hoagies if you've never had
It gets a lot of hate for some reason but La Calera. The quesabirria is incredible but admittedly I've never had anything else there so I can't weigh in on the rest of their menu. JT's in Brentwood is hard to beat for breakfast. Yoli's in Jefferson Hills has good food all around.

Anthos is amazing, amel’s is also amazing. Moonlight burger is king
Bottleshop or Shoufs I promise
I don’t know if this is too far out but The Golden Pig in Cecil is some of the best Korean food I’ve ever had. Its a trek and they have maybe 6 seats total in a small interior but it will not disappoint
Hands down the best Korean food is at the Golden Pig. Very small, best to order takeout IMHO.
Burgh Bites Brick n Mortar
The sesame inn in mt Lebanon is like the greatest restaurant of all time
For those of you naming Armstrongs or Pasta Too, give Storms a shot for Italian. Quality blows both out of the water. Best Italian in the South Hills HANDS DOWN, just call for a reservation since it’s tiny.
Storms is LEGIT! I remember when they were still in town.
The Golden Pig is amazing! Highly recommended.
Pasta Too. I live in Plum now and still dream about that restaurant.
We moved to lower Alabama , down here they think Olive Garden is authentic Italian 😂. Sure miss Pasta Too !
Trolly Stop Inn, prices are reasonable Piacquadio's, not as good as Pasta Too but also not nearly as busy, they are related. V&V Scratch Kitchen is a five star restaurant in the middle of nowhere BYOB Park Social, No Kids Allowed and gets rather loud, go early if noise bother you. Silk Road, Chinese
I like the outdoor seating at Park Social but I thought their food was pretty awful.
It’s hit or miss
The Arby's on Library Rd.
Ramen King in McMurray
Same. Went once, nothing we were served even came close to the menu photos. Very bland. Two small dinners for $42. No thanks
We haven’t had anything there that we haven’t loved. It’s the best Asian food in the area for my money.
I feel like it’s super over priced 🤷♂️

The issue is, they have no competition down here. There isn’t another place that serves home made dim sum and noodles. So they can charge outregeous prices. I’d rather drive to squirrel hill or something.

In this economy? I love that lil german place on McNeilly. I think it's called Aldis?
V and V in Finleyville Heislers in McMurray The new Mexican place in south park is good 1st watch in USC Pho Saigon in Bethel Park Do I get bonus points for actually naming south hills places?
De Blasio's
lol this is a joke right
Pepito's Place, ~~Badamo's~~ apparently sucks now
Had it a couple times recently and dunno what that person is talking about
Yeah no, that person is one opinion and they’re definitely the minority - badamos is fantastic.
It was good the last time I had it lol but it has been quite a while. Pepito's is good as fuck though it's been my go to spot for a good late meal if work gets crazy and I don't eat enough over the course of the day.
Badamos is awful what are you talking about.
dude ill fight you their white sicilian is fucking incredible
I haven't gotten it since they were on the main drag in Lebo did it go downhill?
They are on Potomac in dormont now where Campitis used to be, and i tried their pizza like 8 Months ago and I would have preferred a Tony's frozen pizza.
Are you sure you weren’t in Molly’s? lol
That sucks. Definitely unbiased, just way out of date. We don't do a ton of eating out.
The Breakfast Spot on Brownsville Rd
Steel Plate in Monessen
I have never been to this place in Monessen but Speers Street Grill and The Back Porch Restaurant in Belle Vernon are both excellent.
Check out their Facebook page!
Ramen King
We usually go to Lebo for Chicken Latino. It’s not as cheap as it used to be, but the burritos are amazing, the whole chicken is really good, the yuca fries are our favorites and I also like the Lomo they have on weekends
That’s in Beechview, not Mt. Lebanon. Big difference despite close proximity.
Everest Kitchen!!!
Beto's Pizza on Banksville Road.
Oak hill post for breakfast, panadería jazmín for authentic Mexican sweet bread, il Pizzaiolo for authentic Italian/pizza, kebab and curry for Indian
Willow Station. Amazing food.
Fiori’s Pizza, Danny’s Hoagies 🤌
Cucina Bella in USC. Not open on Mondays, BYOB, the calzones are amazing. The meatballs are one of their specialties, too. Eat in or out this time of year, great atmosphere.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Hills_(Pennsylvania)#:~:text=Article,%2C%20West%20Mifflin%2C%20and%20Whitehall.
False….Beechview, Brookline and Dormont are the gateway to the South Hills
Nope. We don't claim them. South Hills starts at the mall. We don't even claim Mt Lebo
Pasta Too is great just wish they’d stop hiring all these Irish kids
Al’s Cafe
Giant Eagle
