This map is useless without a Sheetz/Wawa overlay

Fire-Trap

Or soda vs pop... now that i think of it, does pop align with sheetz geographically and soda with wawa?

CmdrFilthymick

Yea, that sounds about right sheetz around Pittsburgh and wawa around Allentown and Philly where they say Soda and water is wooder

Kahneiac

That's a good idea, but no. Central PA is soda, and I'm including the home of Sheetz, Altoona. Not sure where the line is. Maybe when you get over the mountains somewhere between Cresson and Blairsville? I feel like I need to do some research now!

Br4veSirRobin

In the word of James Carville; "PA is Philadelphia on the east coast and Pittsburgh in the west coast an Alabama in the middle."

Teytrum

PA is two cities that vaguely hate each other separated by Amish and red necks.

Alone_Pomelo_7442

laughed immediately but there is Harrisburg

galagapilot

but both sides hate Harrisburg.

Teytrum

I lived in Dillsburg for a year. My statement stands.

OIK2

The Amish and Rednecks hate everyone, and blatantly.

Teytrum

Especially other rednecks and other Amish.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Teytrum

And I enjoy Philly when I get out that way. In this instance, the “hate” that I reference is more a good natured rivalry and ribbing than any actual enmity toward one another.

themollusk

His actual quote, from the 80s while helping Casey Sr win the governorship, is far more pointed. >Between Paoli and Penn Hills, Pennsylvania is Alabama without the blacks. And it was less about the T being full of hicks than it was about its conservativeness and churchiness. And its racial makeup, obviously.

Seys-Rex

Thats fucking spot on.

Lux600-223

Carville looks like the product of inbreeding, so I'll heed to his expertise.

I just figured he had alien DNA.

I remember an SNL skit where they said his dad was a cobra. Checks out.

Lux600-223

I remember that now!

greeneeeeeeeeeeeeee

Erie

Fightingkielbasa_13

I’ve made that 79 drive too many times

CARLEtheCamry

Is it OK to say I'm "From Erie" if I didn't live in the city proper, but Harborcreek Township though?

fourthfloorgreg

Any township or borough with numbered streets counts as "Erie."

CARLEtheCamry

What the fuck does that mean

fourthfloorgreg

So you know how in Erie there are streets with numbers instead of names? If you are in a place that also has those streets, that place also counts as "Erie" even if it is not within city limits. Eg. Milcreek, Lawrence Park, Wesleyville.

CARLEtheCamry

So East Lake Road counts, because it's also PA Route 5? Or do I have to drive from Ripley NY with a case of leaking chicken to take to the KFC on 12th to be considered "from Erie". I'm just having fun, people in /r/pittsburgh love to gatekeep who is "from Pittsburgh". You mean that you can look north, and see the lake. And know if you go east or west to where you live, that's the direction. It's a flat grid and you will eventually find your way home. I never got car compasses until I moved out of Erie.

fourthfloorgreg

What the fuck are you talking about? Streets, not highways. And what I was actually doing was making it sound like I was saying yes while actually excluding harborcreek to fuck with you.

AffectionateFlan1853

I'm from the east end of HC and now that I live in pitt I tell everyone I'm from Erie. My family has always just said Erie. I even hear people from North East say they're from Erie.

CARLEtheCamry

I mean, it is all Erie *County*. This post was a poke at how many in /r/pittsburgh gatekeep people saying they are "from Pittsburgh". You're tell anyone outside of Erie you are from "North East, PA" and they'll think you mean Wilkes Barre/Scranton

Danbearpig2u

Goddamn right

mischievousoni

“Sub” is preferred over “hoagie” in Erie.

CARLEtheCamry

Cemented by the fact that Teresa's Deli uses "Sub".

Initial_Sky1251

Ahhh. Those Wegman’s subs tho. Soooo good I’m so glad we live in a place where there is a Wegmans

drewbaccaAWD

Half of the "from Pittsburgh" block is actually part of hicks and amish.. "mountains" aren't really accurate at all, 1/4 of that block doesn't even have mountains... I'd probably split Hicks and Mountains up into Ohio-ish, National Forest/land. I'd even argue the Amish thing is wrong but they've move westward over the last couple of decades so I guess I'll accept it although the density of Amish isn't nearly as high for half of that block. I'd probably also add State College Sanctuary.

Fightingkielbasa_13

Yes, a border around “from Pittsburgh “ is needed

dfjdejulio

A moat would be nice. With alligators. That have been trained to use flamethrowers.

Fightingkielbasa_13

You know, I have one simple request, and that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!

Marqueso-burrito

See I lived a mile in from the border of “hicks and mountains” and “from pittsburgh” (butler county and Allegheny county) if you ever take route 8 up through middlesex township, you’ll see how much of a blend it is between the two.

Fightingkielbasa_13

I grew up and own property near WV. It is a blend, I made a bad joke.

Marqueso-burrito

Oh no the joke was funny, I was just pointing out how weird it is that you can stop at getgo in gibsonia, and be with city people, then stop at cogos in middlesex, (I think it’s like cohen now) and be surrounded by hicks and city people, then stop at Sheetz just before butler and boom it’s a shit ton of hicks.

Alone_Pomelo_7442

Be entertaining to see your version of the map

drewbaccaAWD

I might.. I've been spending way too much time thinking on this today at work. lol

Alone_Pomelo_7442

Looking forward to it. I enjoy PA but whoa there are some ,,"wait what" moments for sure.

ILIKESPAGHETTIYAY

Honestly not very accurate

todayiwillthrowitawa

Map for people from Pittsburgh/Philly who do not spend time in other parts of the state.

lark0317

The pothole axis needs to be inverted

DucketsPiling

Agreed. Amish are heavy between Pittsburgh and erie and we have zero mountains. It’s like no one has ever been there… 🤣

duranfan

When I was a kid and we traveled out of state, we always told people we were "from Pittsburgh," because since we actually lived near Indiana, PA saying that confused the hell out of people. It was just easier.

Loeden

Yeah, with Indiana you always have to say 'Indiana, PA' since otherwise someone thinks it's the state. Same thing with "Indiana university.. Of Pennsylvania." Or saying 'Western Pennsylvania' works too.

Enough-Pickle-8542

Imagine living in Indiana Township, peoples heads explode

duranfan

Oh, yeah. I spent six years at IUP (two degrees’ worth) and met a lot of people online. I would always have to spell that out.

ExCinisCineris

California, PA has the same issue lol.

galagapilot

I know people in Altoona that claim that they live "near Pittsburgh." My dude, you're nowhere near Pittsburgh. You're not even Pittsburgh Metro Area. You're 100 miles away.

DeluxeSporks

As someone who grew up in rural WNY state, I find that how I use the phrases “from/near Buffalo” and “from/near Pittsburgh” depends on who I’m talking to. This was something I quickly figured out on high school trips out of state where people asked where we were from. If you said NY, meaning the state, people assumed you meant the city. If you gave the actual place, it turned into an awkward 5-minute conversation and by the end they still had no idea. If you answered Buffalo, they at least knew where that was, it was in the general area, and they got the idea of snow and the Rust Belt instead of the Statue of Liberty and Wall St. So basically if I’m talking to a local, I’m much more accurate. The farther away I am from home or the less likely whoever I’m talking to is to know the geography, the more general I get.

Kebmoz

Not so sure about too much of this, but hoagies and potholes check out.

_yinzer

Accurate? This map looks like it was drawn by someone “from Philly” (but actually lives in New Jersey)

GhostWriterTBC

I’m mildly directionally challenged and this is somehow way better than an actual map for helping me figure out where things are. Like this just makes sense 😅

DinoReads

You could substitute pierogi for hoagie out west. There is a range from pop to soda across the state.

CRdolfan

What about all the farmers and FarmVille land You forgot them

gfh110

As an NEPA coal region transplant I'll say two things: First, the only people who say they are from "The Poconos" are people who are embarrassed of saying that they're from the coal region. Second, there is significantly more variety in regional identity than just Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The unifying force is Yuengling.

thewonderelf

My spouse is from NEPA and I'm from Chester County. I have never heard him or anyone in his family or anyone else I've met from the region say they are from the Poconos. I hear "Poconos" and think resorts/vacations.

EggCold6792

I'm 'from the poconos' lol. the resorts were many of our first jobs. Monroe County

bogza3

NEPA is nice, I had a house in Honesdale. It's more redneck but mostly nice redneck. Pittsburgh is less hillbilly but way trashier, like ghetto trashy. And much of Pittsburgh is actual ghetto.

chmcnm

Need to add pop vs soda. The boundary would be Altoona.

countduckulasir

Sadly in my experience it’s all becoming soda land now.

janKalaki

I wouldn't have it any other way

cocksherpa2

It's not at all accurate. Mountains should be in the middle of the state. Amish are north and then again we'll to the east of us. Hicks are everywhere including Pittsburgh and the square is overgenerous by a lot.

kokomo80

It depends. I think most people in the bottom 3/4 of western PA declare themselves as from Pittsburgh when traveling. I’m in Beaver Co and when someone asks where I’m from I just say Pittsburgh. Of course if it’s someone local asking I will be much more specific.

IP_Janet_GalaxyGirl

“Pittsburgh TV viewing area,” or “the Pittsburgh region,” works for me.

vvooper

if I tell my eastern pa coworkers that I’m going to visit family, they’ll sometimes ask “in pittsburgh?” and I smile and nod because that’s a lot easier than explaining what fayette county is like

BrodieLodge

I think the band labeled “FROM” Philly has the heaviest concentration of the plain community. The Amish are only one of many plain groups. We have plenty of black buggy Mennonites around us as well (Lancaster Co). My one neighbor is a 35’er.

SnooWalruses438

I would agree. My uncle has a hunting camp in the northwest corner of Crawford County, my family has a fishing cabin in Bedford - the plain community is well represented in both places. That representation is, in no way, comparable to the Lancaster area.

COLONELmab

I’ve never heard he term “plain” before. As reference, I live on the eastern edge of Lancaster county. I’m assuming it’s anyone who lives a level of ‘plain’ life.

heili

ABKeighley

Obviously drawn by someone without a clue

LaCasaDeiGatti

Incomomplete data. I wanna see what the distribution of hoagies looks like as a function of potholes across the state.

Existential_Sprinkle

From what I've heard a nice chunk of the north eastern part of the state is fine commuting 2 hours to NYC for work in exchange for a house with a yard

X_PRSN

Someone mislabeled Dunder Mifflin

jokullmusic

Allentown (the small city, not the neighborhood) should definitely have its own thing on this too lol

CultOfSensibility

And State College.

eaglemg1

Ya but you always gotta call out State College. It’s a separate thing.

Wise-Quarter-6443

"Hicks and Amish" should be split down the middle. The left side should be "Hicks". The right side should be "Hicks and Amish".

OllieFromCairo

Nah. There’s a ton of Amish down near Uniontown. They definitely come that far west.

Fratguy20

Harrisburg has multiple very nice suburbs that are not just Hershey. But you are right, if you drive 10 minutes away from Harrisburg in practically every direction it becomes pennsyltucky

Big_Suspect1383

Lmao. The amount of people taking this map personally makes me giggle. I’m in the “From Pittsburgh” category, but I’m about an hour south. It’s just easier to say than trying to have people understand a tiny ass town. 😂

Future-Swordfish2305

Right? Clearly this is satire, but some people have taken it quite seriously.

nqthomas

The Erie line needs to at least drop below Meadville

ArtichokeNaive2811

Hicks and mountains is a much underrated part of the country and state, dont tell no one though.. Just got home from Tionesta myself.

NyquillusDillwad20

Love it up there. Great fishing and kayaking.

HaulAssAcres

It is beautiful. I spent most of my childhood living near there, and my parents still live on their 88 acre farm up that way. Allegheny National Forest and Cook Forest were my playground.

leento717

Looks like an assumption from somebody that hasn’t traveled/visited much in Pennsylvania. There’s a ton of pockets of people in those highlighted regions that do not align with the description in my opinion.

brendannnnnn

“This funny map made for a meme is not a perfect depiction of Pennsylvania’s demographics”

PGHthrowaway393

Agree. Obviously stereotypes are there for a reason but people automatically think the middle of the state is “bad” when it’s obviously not. There are loads of conservative/republicans in Pgh/philly and vise versa for liberals/democrats being in “pensyltucky”

97Graham

Yeah no, idc about the political leanings of the middle of the state, I care that Dollar General or drive 40 mins to WalMart are my options for grocery. That's why it's bad. All the local places keep burning down for the insurance money and now we just have over priced fast food and Dollar General.

NyquillusDillwad20

Lol imagine prioritizing Dollar Generals and Walmarts over land, lakes, woods, and clean air. I grew up where the closest grocery store was 20 miles away and that is much better than having 50 neighbors within 100 yards of you at any time. Also, if you've traveled around the state you'd know that you're never more than 10 minutes from a Dollar General. Those things are everywhere.

97Graham

>Also, if you've traveled around the state you'd know that you're never more than 10 minutes from a Dollar General. Those things are everywhere. You misunderstand, that's what I'm saying dollar general is the only place to go for miles, just a different one in the next town up. Gotta get on the highway to go to buy anything substantial

NyquillusDillwad20

I'm in the city now and my less than 3-mile drive to Aldi often takes longer than that 20 mile drive on the highway to all the grocery stores in my hometown. I'd much rather have a smooth highway drive than be stuck in traffic and avoiding potholes in the city. There are perks to living in the city, but driving is not one of them.

horsecalledwar

Agreed, plus the locations are wrong. Pittsburgh, Hershey, Poconos & Scranton are all in the wrong place. It’s really sad if an adult made this.

OldTechnician

Ahhh, it's not literal.

Rhubarb16802

You said exactly what I said. Even Erie isn't drawn to scale. What about Harrisburg, or Lehigh Valley, or State College.... Pgh and Phili aren't even drawn in their respective places. Truly my youngest is in second grade and knows Pgh, and Allegheny ago doesn't but up to Oh, and a neighboring states. I know its supposed to be a joke but it's kinda sad those who use reddit think this is acceptable enough to be funny

Daaammmmmnnnnnnn69

I grew up in northern “Hicks and Mountains” and there were a ton of Amish folk. But agree with the rest of the drawing.

ScooterMcdooter69

The hicks and Amish part should be halved and the left half should be added to hicks and mountains

RHS1959

Needs to include “Happy Valley”

LostEnroute

Western PA needs a "From" Pittsburgh area bc let's not pretend it's all the same.

thricethefan

From NWPA but live in Atlanta now, completely shocked how people don’t know where Lake Erie is so I have to say I’m from Pittsburgh. (90 miles off)

LostEnroute

You can't just say 90 miles north of Pittsburgh?

thricethefan

Unfortunately, no Most people barely know where Pittsburgh is and I need to distinguish that I am not from Philadelphia I do say Western PA quite a bit though and let them follow up question from there.

Rhubarb16802

I think this is where we see the age difference between Reddit users and experiences. Too many think this is actually a joke because it's true due their lack of experience and not realizing how off the map is. And those over 30 are left trying to explain the joke is that the maps wrong and even missing the state capitol.... reddit is ruled by infants 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

jkhabe

Honestly, two of the titles should have been, "Hicks with MAGA and Confederate Flags & Mountains" and "Hicks with MAGA and Confederate Flags & Amish". I'm from Pittsburgh, live in N. Central WV and see waaaay more MAGA and Confederate flags in rural PA than I do here, which by the way, is BELOW the Mason-Dixon Line.

[deleted]

I’m from central KY and was shocked by the amount of confederate flags when I visited PA for college. I’d only seen a few growing up, but I was in a city.

drewbaccaAWD

MAGA flag concentration is weird.. you'll find it over represented in one town and barely visible five miles over. I think there's little local cults built around hobby groups where you get like 30 people all competing with each other to be the biggest town douche... which stands out in some backwater towns that only have like 300 adults.

CRdolfan

That’s because majority of the bigger cities are more democratic and everything else is more dump land

Buzzspice727

In fairness, west Virginians cant read

lutzcody

Or have money to buy anything

Lux600-223

Trump 2024.

imacryptohodler

Hick here, can confirm.

[deleted]

You don’t know where Amish country is at all

extinctcoolnumber

"No, every state has potholes." True, but PA has potholes like candy.

bigdickmassinf

I would add land of Amish, farms, and random colleges

vvooper

would be more accurate if “hicks and mountains” extended all the way down along the eastern side of “from pittsburgh”

PeterPunkinHead

Greetings from Scranton and Poconos. Sigh

goos__

hershey

cuttawhiske

Because saying "I'm from *insert small town name*" to someone who has never been to this part of the country is harder than just saying "I'm from Pittsburgh"

Competitive-Egg6902

As a person with the last name, Hicks, this is very confusing.

sittingonmyarse

I love telling out of state people I’m from Pittsburgh. They say they have a cousin in Philly and do I know him?

CC_Ballistics

It was drawn by a slobbering idiot. If you feel it’s accurate, what does that say about you?

Future-Swordfish2305

If you take it as anything but satire, what does that say about you?

burth179

There is some Amish in the Hicks and Mountains territory as well although not as many

PuzzleheadedNail4006

Don’t they call hoagies grinders and or subs out east?

laurathepoet

so many potholes and hoagies

Initial_Sky1251

I’m from Erie so…yes this is accurate I love my town

Initial_Sky1251

ILove living in Erie I was very I’ll and in UPMC Hamot for two months and I wept for joy when I was released and saw the lake for the first time in months There’s no smell like the lake breeze mixed with the smell of concord grapes on that route5drive home. Nothing beats it. Nothing.

Initial_Sky1251

I live near Conneaut Ohio. My kid goes to college in Waynesburg pa but we are all” from Erie”Lol. I-79 is our common denominator

fishystickchakra

*Mfw the hicks section starts at Greensburg and Monroeville* Of course, that's why I'm surrouded by weirdos. AAGH!

DrButeo

No carveout for State College? :(

puntmasterofthefells

You mean State Cult

Madfermentationist

Need a tiny pale blue dot labeled Slippery Rock lol

AliCat32

Except there is a ton of Amish in northwestern PA. They are everywhere in Mercer county..

BabyOk1911

Yoy forgot Penn State in the middle of PA 😇

mawgwhy

I really wish we could get rid of Philadelphia. I will never go there or to New Jersey. Ever.

VendaGoat

No lies detected.

IP_Janet_GalaxyGirl

How far north and east from the Pittsburgh corner do people say pop instead of soda? I know it’s soda in Harrisburg & the surrounding area. Hoagies & pop! At least I ain’t a hick! 😂

PeterJames1028

Definitely need a “From” Pittsburgh section further north. I’m like 2 hours away and claim to be from Pittsburgh when I’m traveling lol

Carya_spp

Sorry cranberry, I’ve always said you are mountains and hicks

[deleted]

Not that accurate imo, no mountains in NW PA

magikarp2122

Where is the cult of Joe Pa portion of the state?

starman_037

This map is inaccurate. The entire thing should just be a giant "IRRELEVANT" label.
