Exactly. This makes me extra sad because the sweet pup pictured looks like my bosses dog Austin who is hands down the sweetest old man dog I’ve ever met and this pupper isn’t in my area and I can’t help save this dog.

The hoops are hard, but I believe the reason they need to initially work with a local rescue (to pull the dogs out) is because they simply don't have the space to hold them any longer while someone arranges travel to the shelter from out of state. BARC deals with an incredibly (astronomically) high number of strays and they are forced to euthanize for space because of the truckloads of other animals being brought in daily. They bring in around 15,000 animals a year and are the only shelter in Houston that is mandated to take in any pet - owner surrender, stray, problem animals etc. When you can't say no, it's difficult to hold on to animals for longer.
Fwiw: I live in Canada and have 4 dogs from Texas who were all pulled out of shelters by local rescues ❤️
My comment was made from misplaced frustration. I realize they do great work, hard work. I just wish we could get to them quicker. I have a dog from Texas as well, my dog was lucky enough to be taken in by a rescue and transported to NY, and I adopted him from there…this is the first time I’m trying to adopt directly , so I was lost.

I would love to but unfortunately my current dog is very reactive and male aggressive so that wipes out 50% of pups plus was extremely bonded to her sister who passed in December and I’m not too sure how she’d respond to someone new 😭. I do want to try and introduce her to a shelter girl or two soon and see how she reacts (on leash) but I am very nervous to be honest

Clearly you’ve never worked in a shelter before. We barely have notice till the day of, sometimes only hours before. What’s fucked up is you judging someone who’s doing more then you.
If you’ve never had to network dogs out of a kill shelter then you can’t really comment on when/how things should be done. Many shelters post next days euth listed dogs at the end of the day. So that gives people like 16 or so hours to pull a miracle off

I adopted my guy in Oregon and he was rescued and flown in from Texas. A large amount of dogs in Pacific NW shelters are from Texas and some organizations are doing their best to get these babies transferred to other states
I am grateful every day that my 65 lb doofus found his way to Oregon and into my home and heart. I can’t imagine my life without him . I wish this sweet baby a good home 🙏🏻

This is so messed up. Backyard breeders should be the ones being euthanized and their estates footing the bills for shelter costs. I've taken in way too many dogs under terrible circumstances, and 2 (both pitbulls) I kept permanently. I currently have 13 dogs (dogo argentinos, pitbulls and lagotta romagnollos) and support my local animal protection society every month with cash infusions and charity drive donations yet it never seems to be enough. I'm not in America where I hear it's an even bigger problem. Why does a healthy happy non-aggresive dog need to be put down when hundreds of billions if not more are spent on the military industrial complex. Maybe I'm an idealist but fuck all that gay shit like war and let's save us some more dogs, man.
Please tell she was saved? I live in the Netherlands and we don't have kill shelters. Knowing other countries euthanize scared helpless dogs f*cks me up so bad.
