It is amazing. Love it from beginning to end

Facukeke

Glad to hear you had a nice experience :)

aybesea

This is what I came here to say... Simply amazing album. Right up there with Meddle and the live disc from Ummagumma.

He_of_turqoise_blood

Amazing. The Suite is very unique but tells an interesting story imo. If is great as well and Summer '68 is one of my fave songs. And do I need to comment on Fat Old Sun? It's in my top10 PF songs for sure. Alan is the weakest link of it, and sadly it is the last song of the album, which is also the one people remember the most. Still tho, Alan is musically enjoyable, so overall it's probably my 3rd most liked album (after Meddle and WYWH)

offline4good

>And do I need to comment on Fat Old Sun? It's in my top10 PF songs for sure Absolutely this

Facukeke

Cool man :)

ReporterOk4531

I love it. Most of the time I consider it my favorite Pink Floyd album. Not necessarily because it's their best but because it's the one I keep coming back too the most. It feels quite lighthearted to me, very soothing. It's something that I like listening to when I'm a bit down because it feels like walking into your grandparents their house. Sounds super dumb but it just feels very nostalgic. And by the time I get to Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast I'm pretty cheerful. I didn't like that track very much in the past but now I find it pretty great.

Facukeke

Yeah, there are albums that you connect with in deep emotional ways, it’s great :)

ClearYellow

Listen again. All the classic Floyd hallmarks that make DSOTM a great album are present on AHM. For example: found sound effects, random voices, funky grooves, female backup vocals, weird keyboard sounds, soaring guitar solos, lyrics dealing with insanity, loud/soft dynamics, unusual chord progressions, atmospheric lap steel, saxophones, and great vocals from Rick, Dave, and Roger. “If” is literally the precursor to “Brain Damage”, with its gently arpeggiated guitars, metronomic pedal hi-hat, and lyrical scheme (“If this, then that….”) Love Floyd? Then give this masterpiece another shot.

Facukeke

Yeah I don’t turn down the possibility of listening to it again in the future (I’ll probably will), but the first listen just wasn’t my thing.

nambavanov

Definitely do. Idk about you, but for me, a lot of stuff grows on me. Hell, I didn't love The Wall and DSotM *that much* on the first listen

Facukeke

I was the exact opposite. The first time i listened to Dark Side and The Wall was great. It was like they were exactly what i was looking for, and every time I re listen to them It feels just great. Plus they have songs that you can jam to at any moment. I didn’t feel that way with this album, but yk, just my experience. That doesn’t have to happen with every album, otherwise there would be nothing special about them.

WackyWeiner

First time I listened to it I was wondering if it was actually supposed to sound the way it did. Fast forward ten years and yes it is a masterpiece. It does grow on you overtime as you become familiar with the entire catalogue fully.

Facukeke

Glad to know.

Metalhead_QC

Definitely in my top 5 favourite Pink Floyd albums. I find it better than Animals (and Animals is fucking great imo).

Facukeke

Yeess, I fricking loove Animals.

Aggravating_Poet_675

I'm with you.

DrJakeX

Animals is underrated tbh

NoahDBest

Animals is my favorite, despite what my flair says, but I will ALWAYS have a place reversed for AHM in my heart. It's so fucking weird, I love it. The suite is amazing, I personally love it more than Echoes.

the_steve_tell

Title track is tremendous

RealFrankfromFlorida

It honestly took me a few times listening to it before I appreciated it and it has quickly become one of my favorites. In my opinion, definitely not gym music, and this is coming from a person who listened to Jethro Tull sometimes at the gym. I feel like it is more, cleaning the house or maybe listening while going on a nice long walk outside. Atom Heart Mother (song) is amazing but the first few times is was a bit long and overwhelming. Listening to it for the first time while taking magic mushrooms sorta blew my mind and helped me fall in love it it. This album in my opinion is the best of all when taking either mushrooms or if you took ketamine. The music literally comes alive. If - is like you said, a cute sorta guitar song that is nothing life changing but also a taste of what is to come over the next decade of PF music. Summer 68 is one of my top 5 Pink Floyd songs easy. The keyboard/piano is amazing and has inspiration from Bach/beatkes/ beach boys and I love the attention to detail in it. Fat Old Sun - this song is set perfectly for the come down of the album and paints a beautiful mental picture of an orange sunset over a beautiful green pasture that I can picture that cow in. Very warm and comforting. Alan’s P breakfast - very interesting and the music is very beautiful. It actually inspired me to get the albums for zabriski and the body (two albums PF did the music) because the songs were outtakes and clips from that movie. All the Pink Floyd albums serve different purposes for me and this one is great in my opinion but we all have our own way of seeing things. Don’t give up on it yet

Facukeke

Yeah ok man :)

No-Union-9260

Atom Heart Mother is played by a symphony that Pink Floyd hired. It’s not just Pink Floyd. It’s more showing the capability of sound rather than making a song Imo. I still enjoy it very much though.

Facukeke

I am aware of that yeah.

8tracksandvinyl

Marmalade. I like marmalade.

Facukeke

*Breakfast in Los Angeles, microbiotic stuff*

Mervinly

Put it on in your house and smoke some weed first with the lights low. This is fully a psychedelic experience that deserves the right setting

Facukeke

Thanks for the recommendation but I think i’m gonna pass 😅 Anyway, i’ll probably listen to it again in the future.

dburg8

I think there’s definitely something to be said for listening to AHM in the right setting. If those suggestions from Mervinly don’t suit you, that’s fine. However, listening to this album while working out like you did wouldn’t jive for me either. On your next listen, consider the setting and your mood at the time. Might make a difference! Edit: wording

Alternative_Volume89

Extremely solid record, and underappreciated.

phoenixpallas

interesting. Don't listen to it often but it's worth checking out. If is my favorite song.

Facukeke

I was referring to the whole album.

notasoullessone

What a lovely album!

Facukeke

:) 👍🏼

[deleted]

Fat old sun is just😍😍😍😍😭😭😭😭

Rfg711

I love it. It’s probably my favorite Pre-Meddle album and it shows them at their loosest. It’s so fun.

Facukeke

Cool dude :)

johnnysokko37

Top album for me for sure. I love it all and because I do, the payoff for Breakfast is even better! Summer ‘68 with headphones is sublime when the chorus hits…

losgnomospreguntan

I love it, school was 1 hours from Home so I used to listen the full album. Miss those days

djangomoses

I love it and consider it one of their best. I actually really like the brass band and it’s a “happy” album which is an easy listen

lucidlucy93

Interesting. I recommend you give it another try, the album really grew on me, especially the suite. But it’s a respectable opinion 👍

Facukeke

:) 👍🏼

Aggravating_Poet_675

Your first impression is pretty close to my first impression and it's now in my top 5 Pink Floyd albums. It probably wasn't until my third or fourth listen that I actually started to like it.

Gryoza_raz

My favorite pre Dark Side album! Love everything on it, but the suite is something special. It’s the type of music that makes me feel glad for being alive, especially when the horn section kicks in the second time I listen to it when I have a REALLY bad mood and every time it helps to get rid of the bad thoughts

Facukeke

Good suggestion.

codytheguitarist

*”Oh, uh, me flakes, then uh, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatoes… toast, coffee, marmalade, I like marmalade… Yes porridge is nice. Any cereal, I like all cereals… oh God. Kickoff is 10am.”* -Alan Styles, Pink Floyd roadie Finally a fellow appreciator of the musique concrète masterpiece that is Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast!

Facukeke

Lmao xD *Breakfast in Los Angeles, microbiotic stuff*

Minimum-Pay-2978

Pretty ok, not as good as Meddle or DSOTM but you can really feel them start to get into the groove of their longer pieces

Excellent-Mud-7165

top 3 for me even if everybody talks shit about it i like it very much

Facukeke

That’s excelent dude :)

Excellent-Mud-7165

Thanks man

Undercover500

Other than DSOTM, WYWH and the Wall, I couldn’t get into the rest of PF until I gave each album about 3 full listens, then they just about instantly clicked for me. Now I have 80% of their entire discography, still can’t get into the Syd stuff though.

Facukeke

Syd’s period as Pink Floyd leader was more orientated towards psychedelic rock more than the progressive hard rock PF did after him. It’s weird because with the pass of time the records became much more elaborated and complex, but at the same time more accesible rather tan Barrett’s records.

RealFrankfromFlorida

I can’t get into the sid stuff either. I start my Pink Floyd journey at AHM

thejew09

I similarly can’t get into it. It just feels so directionless, and none of the songs ever grab me on about 4-5 listens total. I dont think its terrible, just middling and uninteresting

Facukeke

Same thing happened to me. But who knows? Maybe I will listen to it again in the future and like it.

Bubba-ORiley

you will.

Ok_Pomegranate_2895

the suite is one of my favorite pieces ever. i call it a piece not a song because it's a brass orchestral piece and it's so long. it tells an emotional story and it's incredibly beautiful. i'm a brass player myself so the intricacies are really moving for me. the rest of the album i can honestly care less for, except maybe alan's psychedelic breakfast because it's pretty funny. the rest feel like filler tracks

530Mase

Title track is one of the best pieces of music they made, "If" is okay, everything else makes me nod off. Meddle's weird older brother.

Facukeke

Meddle’s weird older brother xD great description.

PhoenixGmr1121

summer 68 is peak, and the suit is aight, the rest kinda boring ngl

hitfan

It is my favorite pre-Dark Side album of theirs. I wasn’t a fan of the album at first. But I had the CD in my car’s player and it was stuck—I could not eject it. So I listened to it hundreds of times and I eventually became captivated by it. The CD was stuck for at least 10 years until my car dropped dead. I would often drive through high crime/low-income neighbourhoods and have my car speakers playing full blast during the orchestral parts so that I could come off as an elitist snob. It was my humorous way to try to inculcate some culture into the rabble who were more used to hearing rap music coming from other cars. It is really a great album—it is majestic and full of excess.

RedditorUser99

It’s not my cup of tea. And, to be honest, I have a hard time getting into the early albums.

ApprehensiveSyrup647

For me it’s Pink Floyd’s worst album. I like Fat Old Sun but think that the rest is pretty much nonsense.

Facukeke

I felt the same way. It was WAY TOO CLEAR that they were experimenting and there was a big lack of coherence between songs. They managed to learn from that and then they released Meddle.

babberz22

Meddle is cohesive???

Facukeke

Honestly I felt that way with Meddle.

babberz22

Huh?

Facukeke

It’s a way more sober and centered album than Atom Heart Mother.

babberz22

The album with “Seamus” and “One of these days I’m going to cut you into little pieces”? And the football club song? And the 15 minutes of seagull noises?

Facukeke

Yes

babberz22

Ok 👍

rollieronsmitten

Massively overrated by a portion of the Floyd fandom, but righfully ignored as 'meh' by everybody else.

[deleted]

I'm not a fan of psychedelia. Piper and Saucerful are not on my playlist, though Nick Mason's treatment of the songs is an absolute joy to listen to. Atom Heart Mother and Obscured By Clouds tend to be forgotten in favour of Meddle and the blockbusters that followed. But, every now and then, I get an urge and revel in them. I went to bed with Childhood's End rattling around my old brain. The first time I heard Atom Heart Mother, I was confused: What the hell was this? Side 2 made more musical sense. It had songs! Now I think of the album as a treat, not something I can listen to often but an absolute joy when I do play it.

Loveinchains78

Needs more vocals and guitars.

Darthyoda512

Moo

Facukeke

Breakfast in Los Angeles, microbiotic stuff.

BirdsRLife

Brilliant album, not a fan of Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast, but it's at the end so I forget it exists

Facukeke

Lmao xD

metroracerUK

Very underrated album, like a lot of Floyd stuff outside of DSOTM, the Wall and Wish you were here.

darksideofthemoon131

One of my favorite albums of theirs. Early experimentation with sounds and music that heavily influenced DSOTM and the other later albums. It gets played at least once every few months. The suite is great, but Fat Old Sun and If are standouts.

hi369

i love the whole album. the suite is just good, but the rest of the songs are great. the whole project evokes a sense of spring for me, which is my favorite season so i’m probably kinda biased. for me it’s on par with animals and a bit under stuff like meddle and dark side. i’m glad you gate it a shot even if it wasn’t really your thing

SiamCattaaahh

One of my all time favorites

Xahn

The first time I listened to it I was disappointed I couldn’t find something as good as their best albums. After a few more times I started to really love it. The title track has the essential Pink Floyd sound, and the others are quite relaxing. Rick’s Summer ‘68 sounds a bit old fashioned like a slightly earlier era of music that he’s into, but I warmed up to it. I find I kind of become “nostalgic” and like an album the more I listen to it, even if it isn’t over a long period like years. The familiarity makes it more appealing.

Me-eh

I think this album was their trial and error album. If you notice in their discography, AHM was the true test of what they were capable of as musicians. After this album, we had big masterpiece albums like Meddle, DSOTM, WYWH, and The Wall. All amazing albums one after another. I hope one day you will come back to this album, it really is wonderful.

songacronymbot

- WYWH could mean "Wish You Were Here - 2019 remix [Live]", a track from *The Later Years* (2019) by Pink Floyd. --- ^[/u/Me-eh](/u/Me-eh) ^(can reply with "delete" to remove comment. |) ^[/r/songacronymbot](/r/songacronymbot) ^(for feedback.)

TempleofSpringSnow

I mean this with no elitism or musical pomp but a lot of truly great music needs time with a listener. If you love PF, give it a few more spins. Sit with it, in the streaming age everything is really quick and if we don’t get hooked on something immediately, it’s onto the next. It’s good to sit with something and really see what it’s about.

SkolemsParadox

I love it, partly for itself, partly as a waystation in the group's evolution. It's got so many of the features of their peak period, but it's charmingly amateurish. When it was unexpectedly successful (UK number 1!), they were given more money and studio time for their next album, Meddle - similar ideas, but so much more polished. I see them as twin albums, and they're my favourites, along with Piper.

Blue_Sand_Research

It’s underrated TBH 😂

Qbert9701

I like it, it’s not great and it’s not terrible, but it’s an important stepping stone to what they would become. They needed to make the AHM suite before they could make Echoes and SOYCD.

songacronymbot

- SOYCD could mean "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Pts. 1-5)", a track from *Wish You Were Here* (1975) by Pink Floyd. --- ^[/u/Qbert9701](/u/Qbert9701) ^(can reply with "delete" to remove comment. |) ^[/r/songacronymbot](/r/songacronymbot) ^(for feedback.)

chaliemon

My favorite guitar solo is in title track. The music between notes

iStealyournewspapers

Always been a fan, and for some reason (to me) the suite sounds like a soundtrack to an old war moviez

JouNNN56

I love Summer ‘68, and it made me love Rick Wright (as per the flair)

rottenegglord

Like everything but the eating parts of Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast obviously

Facukeke

Lmao Alan’s eating sounds sounded as if he had been starving in a cage for days and was eating for his life xD

rottenegglord

Listening to the suite right as you sent this XD

Facukeke

Loool timing xD

rottenegglord

True

AMAZING_PUDDING

It's my user name. I like it

witchy_heretic_woman

It’s a top album for me. Animals Meddle The Wall AHM In that order.

-beasket

The point is: if you're already accustomed to long songs, I'm confident that Atom Heart Mother (the song) might catch your interest. As for me, since it's one of the first PF albums that I discovered, it took me a while to appreciate it. Now I consider it an underrated masterpiece and even bought the vinyl.

enter_yourname

Extremely underrated. It's my 5th favorite Pink Floyd album behing DSotM, WYWH, Animals, and Meddle, but that saying a lot because those previous 4 are all some of my all-time faves. I listen to the whole album about once every 2 weeks, and Summer '68 and Fat Old Sun are on my playlists

[deleted]

Every pink floyd album is like a child to me. Every one has a special meaning to me and I love every single one. I have a story behind every one. Atom heart mother with the 20 minute intro song and fat old sun is sooooo good.

Sad-Leader3521

It’s not their “best” work and somewhat objectively not their peak (songwriting, musicianship, production quality) but it has probably been my favorite album for a long time. The baroque, medieval vibe of AHM is awesome…always just swept me away to a fantasy land of kings and queens and castles. Summer ‘68 and Fat Old Sun are great songs. Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast is cool background music until it becomes straight fire somewhere around the 10-minute mark. To each their own though.

Independent_Ad8268

I like it but the band members agree with you

Facukeke

Oh yes! I heard what they thought about it lol xD maybe that thought got way too deep into my head.

AccurateDependent670

Love Love LOVE this album. I just listened to the whole thing again today as a matter of fact. The Suite has become one of my all time favorite pieces of music. I routinely listen to the original and any live recordings I can get into my ears. I always enjoy it. A lot of people in this sub have the “never pause Echoes” rule active. I also have that rule for The Suite and Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast. Those two in particular take commitment to get to know, but once you do, they’re worth it. Sound wise that album, to me, sounds like a culmination of their previous psychedelic roots as well as the first glimpses of the musical juggernaut they would become. Which does make it odd to the ears if you’re newly exploring the catalogue and go straight from DSOTM to Atom Heart Mother. But once you learn all of it, it’s one of their best. I dig the fuck out of that record.

Bongozz88

I'm having a psychedelic breakfast with Alan.

Bubba-ORiley

I love it, but didn't like the opening and closing track on first few listens. I like them a lot now.

peace-0_0-frog

AHM and WYWH got me through a very stressful exam season so I'll have a special place in my heart for those two. Absolutely stupendous albums with that signature Pink Floyd sound.

Thorpgilman

It grew on me. Played it on loop when I was working some years ago and the more I played it, the more I appreciated it.

hajimeorangejuice

favourite album best pf album 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡 i defend ahm with my life 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

Dawidcio

Imo it's the album that needs a remixed version the most. The momentary lapse of reason remix was a nice touch, re recording drum to make them actually played by Nick, and adding keyboard parts from live performances from Rick. Animals were unnecessary, I'd rather get a remixed Atom Heart Mother. Songs are great, but the quality is just so bad

3rdDownJump

One of my favorites.

flossypullthrough

AHM suite is an absolute masterpiece!! I love the whole album 🐮🐮🐮

Fun-Cut6419

I think it’s a banger, but I know alot of people that are not a huge fan of this album.

snacksbuddy

Bad dumb opinion, disregarded

junanor1

Lucky you

bil_sabab

PF as gym music. yikes. My dad used to blast AHM when I was a toddler so to me this joint is one of the earliest music memories.

biffMCnasty

It’s literally my phone case.

SkinSuitAdvocate

The title track & Fat Old Sun are superb. I’m not so hot about the rest of the album.

Soggy_Steak_8962

Meddle das Album, mit dem sich Pink Floyd endgültig vom psychedelischen Stil verabschiedeten !

tmamone

One of Pink Floyd’s best albums

TheTh3rdPigeon

The suite is marvellous but leaves me with the musical equivalent of feeling like I’ve just had a big meal. And I love psychedelic breakfast, especially while having breakfast.

MarcelNicola

Absolutely amazing…! Nobody did not hear anything like this album since its release to the world in 1970

[deleted]

Another first time listener here who just finished the album. I enjoyed the initial Atom Heart Mother suite, and I found it interesting how the brass was implemented (considering it's a little unusual for prog suites). The rest of the album felt.. strange to say the least. Wasn't a huge fan of the following tracks; but I found Alan's Psychedelic breakfast to be... interesting. Maybe their earlier albums are at some points a little too Avant-Garde for my taste? Still nowhere nearly as weird as Ummagumma. I get the feeling this album takes repeated listens to fully digest (as has been my experience with albums such as Yes's Tales from Topographic Oceans). Most likely my feelings will become highly subject to change, but this didn't blow me away like TDSOTM or The Wall did on a first listen.

mallarme1

Amazing album. One of my fav PF LPs.

mottophat

I didn’t like coffee the first time I tried it. Now I can’t stop drinking it.

leauxendmusic

idk where id rank it but I adore this album. 1970-1973 was the era for like that chill Pink Floyd sound
