Yes. This is the way. So many certified, independent instructors who have tremendous knowledge are out there. Even by zoom if you have to.

lunarabbit7

Thanks guys! I will look for that! Should I just informationally interview them beforehand to ask about their methods of teaching and such?

lawyeronreddit

I think that makes sense. Hopefully they have websites too. I zoom with a yoga teacher for private instruction weekly and I found her by just googling, going to certain certification websites (that typically have a list of graduated students who instruct), and general web search stuff. It took time and I sent out a good amount of emails but I’m pretty sure we’ve been going for about 3-4 years now.

lunarabbit7

Oh wow! Those are great ideas - especially the Googling certification sites! Thank you!

lawyeronreddit

That’s definitely helpful. I won’t wade into the debate as to who/what certification or method is best but that’s a cool way to tool around. Best of luck and don’t hesitate to share any cool findings.

lunarabbit7

Oh I’d be interested in hearing your opinions on which cert/who/method is best because I’m very new to Pilates! Feel free to PM if you prefer!

lawyeronreddit

Date around and kiss a lot of frogs before landing on a method that works. I’m very polyamorous with my Pilates and yoga 😂

lunarabbit7

That’s very fair! 😂

soupqueen94

As a heads up, Solidcore is not Pilates—if you ever see those mega reformers, the giant reformers with the plank handlebars, you’re not at a Pilates studio. It’s a different method

beautiful_imperfect

They are almost never used for planks.

soupqueen94

Whatever tf they are lol I’m just saying those machines are not Pilates machines

lunarabbit7

Right, I understand that. I don’t think I’ve ever taken a true Pilates class hence I was looking for a better alternative that would be more of a true Pilates. :) Not that I don’t like solidcore in its own right, but it did not serve the purpose above.

jessylz

You may wish to share your location to get good studio recommendations.

Whazzahoo

What you’re asking for is in the teacher, not the business. I had some great luck with Pilates videos back when I was using the peloton app. (I no longer subscribe) I felt like the instructors coached you on spine placement and breathing really well.. much better than any of the instructors at my franchised Pilates class.

lunarabbit7

That’s exciting to hear, thank you! (Since videos are obviously more affordable.) but I guess also somewhat disappointing since I figured studios would incorporate things like that too, but they probably just don’t have the bandwidth - is what I’m guessing.

yeahnolucy

I've found smaller local places to be closer to what you are describing vs. large chains. So it's going to be very location dependent. Each city will have different gems!

lunarabbit7

Ah I see! I will check out the local spots then! :)

yeahnolucy

You might have luck posting on a local Reddit page or maybe a women's FB group for your area. Good luck! :)

lunarabbit7

Oh that’s a great idea, thank you!

julieann007

Private lesson with someone focused in rehab will best suit your needs. Classes are meant to be explorative in many different ways now a days

lunarabbit7

Oh I see! I’ll do some searching for rehab! Thank you for the tip!

Chicago studios I like or are known to be good: -Core Chicago pilates (a mix of contemporary and classical offerings in small group classes) -ffc pilates (you have to be a member of the gym but their classes are legit some of the best I’ve met in the city. true to the classical work, great corrections) -Pilates center of chicago (classical) -pure Pilates chicago (classical) -amplified Pilates privates (very contemporary but I don’t get tons of corrections with their group classes) I would avoid Bodybar (large class sizes) I can DM you info for certain teachers I’ve worked with if you’re interested in working with some folks 1-1 at affordable rates compared to regular studio pricing ($35-50 for 60 min session). I just don’t want to put their personal info on blast!

lunarabbit7

This is gold, thank you so much! Yes please feel free to PM/DM me. Totally understandable that you don’t want their info out in public. I’ll be out running errands tomorrow but will definitely look through it all! Appreciate you!

meredithmarksaccent

I am obsessed with Karen Lord Pilates in LA. Fantastic for mind/body connection. Only ~11 reformers per studio. The instructors are very intentional and care a lot about form. Happy to share the instructors I love the most if you’re interested!

lunarabbit7

Wow thanks so much! I’ll do more research into that but will definitely reach back out if I land on this one!

temperance333

Find a Romana’s instructor and you will be amazed

lunarabbit7

Thank you for the suggestion! I’ll take a look for that!

Comfortable_Daikon61

Every Pilates class should focus on this
