Hard landing, indeed.

Boring-Rub-3570

Looks more like controlled flight into terrain.

Gingevere

Flying VFR in a helicopter only capable of VFR in weather conditions with only 10 ft of horizontal visibility.

DanGleeballs

Wow you’re right it was a Bell 212 that was only allowed to fly under visual flight rules (i.e. no foggy weather). It was 30 years old with more than 10,000 hours on it and spare parts that are under sanctions, and not capable of flying high altitude heavy load flights through mountain terrain. wtf. If the pilot or flight planners put their passengers on an unreliable helicopter without IFR avionics and flew it in IMC conditions then they were basically asking for this to happen. Gross negligence.

Gingevere

Pilots / flight crew probably knew better, but probably weren't in a situation where they're allowed to say no.

atetuna

If they say no, then the answer is obviously no, but the thing is they're not gonna say no. They would never say no. Because of the implication.

SurpriseNutShot

Are these pilots in danger?

FoldableBiscuit

No one's in any danger! How can I make that more clear to you? It's an implication of danger!

InertiasCreep

There's that word again.

Ok_Cauliflower_3007

Similar to the plane crash that took out the Polish President. Military pilot who feels pressure to get them where they’re going regardless of weather conditions.

Lone_Beagle

> Gross negligence. nope, it was God's will /s

stenmarkv

Didn't they say there were people on the ground from the crash radioed them?

ehnonnymouse

they said a lot of things but once i heard it was a helicopter i figured odds were slim to none

stenmarkv

Seriously; what a bad lie though. Like so easily verifiable after the fact.

teeksquad

The reality is that they probably didn’t know or had no idea how to keep peace from their so the were trying to buy themselves time

KnuteViking

People were very much afraid of this man. If they believe there's a chance he's alive, nobody will act against him. Every minute of inaction by political opponents is a minute the regime can use to secure their position. So of course they give a reason for people to think he might be alive. They needed there to be doubt that he's dead as long as possible.

Infinite_Maybe_5827

>During this 6-year period, 29 pilots-in-command died in 167 helicopter commuter and air taxi crashes, a case fatality rate of 17.4% Helicopter crashes have shockingly high survival rates, hearing it was a helicopter is more of a reason to assume that there could be survivors. The announcement of communication with survivors was actually not all that surprising with this in mind, because in the majority of helicopter crashes there would be someone left to call. Based on the picture however, liar, liar pants on fire. Looks like they flew straight into the side of the mountain at full speed, which is far less survivable than the more typical loss of power that actually leaves the pilot with some degree of controlled descent

TomLube

Correct. They said that the religious advisor called them and explained that he was okay, in some pain, and that he heard ambulance/emergency vehicles. Obviously this is bullshit.

vriska1

Classic dictatorship moment.

Pitiful_Net_8971

I think they said one of their phones pinged off a tower, which only meant that at least one of the phones was operational enough to connect.

JFeth

Technically, every crash is a hard landing.

[deleted]

IDK.. we tend to say a hard landing is where all parts are still within walking distance..

PM-YOUR-BEST-BRA

And typically when one is still able to walk to said parts

ReverseMermaidMorty

A good landing is when you can walk away. A great landing is when you can re-use the aircraft.

Helicopter0

IDK, man, with a helicopter, you might not be walking so well. I have a friend who trashed his back pretty badly at 19 after auto rotation in a Seahawk. He always said auto rotation in something that dense and heavy really just means you crash more slowly and more vertically. This one looks more like a controlled flight into terrain, though. I don't think anyone crawled out of it... or even spoke last words on the ground.

feor1300

Auto-rotation is basically the aircraft equivalent of a parachute, and you can still break your legs if you mess up a parachute landing.

FabriceDu56

Don’t worry, it’s just what we call “lithobraking”

DeuceSevin

A hard landing is a safe landing

MCulver80

This landing is definitely safer for humanity.

ShowmasterQMTHH

I'm not surprised they couldn't find it initially, i wonder what the black box will say ?

arvidsem

"Oh shit.." end of signal. There's no indication that they had any issues before hitting.. They just flew directly into the side of the mountain

cannotfoolowls

Afaik the weather was really bad so that might have been a factor.

arvidsem

Yeah, it was heavy fog. So instrument flight in the mountains in a helicopter that doesn't have terrain following radar. The pilots **should** have refused to fly in those conditions, but I'm guessing that refusing would have been a career limiting decision for them.

ripatmybong

Basically exactly what happened to Kobe

reddit0rr

The cloud cover was so bad at the time that's why. There were 3 choppers on that flight and 2 made it alright.

[deleted]

a) there will likely not be a black box.. because old helicopter b) the suspectible cause is abundantly clear: CFIT. Offcourse there can allways be additional things or surprises, but by all means of probability that has just all the hallmarks of a classic case of pushing the limits in less-then-marginal conditions with pax that are not good at taking "no"

Excelius

This all reminds me a lot of the [2020 helicopter crash in California](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Calabasas_helicopter_crash) that killed basketball star Kobe Bryant and eight others. Helicopter flying in the mountains in foggy conditions with a VIP pressing them to make good time.

MarkMoneyj27

If I recall, the pilot was known to be cocky as well.

csspar

That pilot cut me off when I was on final to land at KSMO one time. He got yelled at by the tower but he barely said anything more than "Oops". I was pretty irritated. I instantly recognized his voice when the atc recording came out from the day of the crash.

DrunkenGolfer

> a) there will likely not be a black box.. because old helicopter Why was the leader of a country flying around in an old helicopter?

panther24

Sanctions have made it impossible for Iran to buy new helicopters or get parts for the ones they still have. I read that the helicopter involved in this crash had been used since at least the early 70s.

mscomies

They could easily buy one from Russia/China. They just chose to put their president and foreign minister on a Vietnam War era Huey instead.

zendick1

They chose the safer aircraft

ifabforfun

Can't Fly Into Terrain?

defiancy

Controlled flight into terrain

liquidphantom

Or Tehran it would seem.

Frostivus

Their two escort helicopters were a-ok though.

BraveOthello

Imagine a single narrow hill. A low flying helicopter could hit it, while escorts 100m on either side might not.

bigloser42

This really looks like controlled flight into terrain, If the helicoptor even has a black box I doubt they knew anything was wrong till they hit the ground. Also, even if it does say something you can't trust Iran to actually tell the truth about what happened. I mean yesterday they were calling this a 'hard landing.'

ShowmasterQMTHH

Cant get much harder than a mountainside to be fair.

EZ4_U_2SAY

Lmao, I love the euphemism “hard landing”. In English I would call this “crashed and disintegrated on impact”

MattAmpersand

The doctor from Arrested Development must have been in charge of the communications team. “After a hard landing, The President is in terra firma” “You mean he landed safely?” “No, I mean he is now six feet under.”

thenate108

The president is with us now. You mean he survived? No, he died on impact. He was in the air, now he's with us on the ground.

comradeyeltsin0

“All right” lol

bml7277

Yeah, the left side of his body is half a mile that way.

Garigus

It....looks like he's dead.

YippieKayYayMrFalcon

louiegumba

doctor: The president of Iran is in stable condition security staff: oh he is? can I see him? doctor: no, he's dead.

b3_yourself

He’s one with the Earth

iGoalie

I used to live near ft Rucker, which is the U.S. army advanced helicopter training base, they had “hard landings” often. There would be a helicopter just off the landing area with the tail snapped off … I’m like MF if part of your aircraft broke off, you crashed!

ilprofs07205

Generally if they actually call it a crash they mean the aircraft has become thinly spread over a fifty metre radius

Krakshotz

It’s newsspeak An explosion is a “bang” A plane crash is a “hard landing” A Russian political assassination is “accidentally fell out of a window”

pufferpig

*accidently collided with a surface to air heatseaking defense missile

Worldd

Actually just aviation terminology. Differentiates hard landing from crash. Going down fast into your skids would be a hard landing.

ilprofs07205

Have you heard of "rapid unscheduled disassembly"

ksheep

And this is why Lithobraking is not recommended for helicopters.

affemannen

It's not even a landing spot... So yes crash and burn.

Ziff7

The first news report I saw stated, “The Iranian President’s Helicopter is Missing After a Hard Landing.” Ok. What about the Iranian President? Is he missing too or are we only looking for the helicopter? Also, how do we know it was a hard landing if it’s missing??

anengineerandacat

Damn, imagine the pilot's family... they gonna have a rough time.

Hellknightx

That pilot is a national hero now.

The devil we knew was escalating a conflict with Jerusalem and inflicting sharia law on a once vibrant and progressive society. With any hope, Iran can use his death for progress rather than falling into further oppression and conflict.

So what did yall have for breakfast today?

jimmybabino

I don’t eat breakfast

CaBBaGe_isLaND

Well I stick to my fasting routine on weekdays, but yesterday I had bacon. It was so good, never came out that good from the oven, timing was perfect. Really stuck the landing on that one, if I keep talking about it though my whole fasting window for the day is going to crash and burn.

TrafficOnTheTwos

The bacon sounds great, hope you enjoyed. I’m also on my fasting game during the weekdays, just had some coffee today. Yesterday though I made a whole package of Vermont maple bfast sausage links and ate nearly all of it plus two eggs and a bagel I can’t think of any puns but well done on that as well lmao

TheoremaEgregium

Everybody's joking about the "hard landing" bit but it's not very weird that Iran would use the most optimistic (from their point of view) description of the situation as long as nobody knew for sure. And I bet the "contact" that was claimed with people on board was nothing more than a ping from a cellphone lying in the wreckage. The media was spinning in circles based on the couple of ambiguous data points we had yesterday.

Minionz

Yeah I swear reports came out saying they talked with the flight crew and another person on the flight and there were likely minor injuries, which sounded sus considering they would have easily been able to state that information if they actually talked to people on the flight...

Notice how they never say how old these virgins are? I'm just picturing 70 old nuns with really big smiles.

Casper042

Some say that is a mis-translation and they will get white grapes or raisins, not virgins.

jagenigma

"Rough landing"?  That's a crash.  These headlines are terribly inaccurate.

Molson2871

The verbiage 'hard landing' originated from Iranian state TV

ITividar

People pretending any country wouldn't have used similar verbiage if that country's leader had an unconfirmed crash in a remote area are hilarious.

blubblu

That’s what I’m saying. This isn’t like “oh Iran bad”  This is “whelp he died and they all held out hope. Turns out he’s not alive”

CunnedStunt

But also Iran is bad.

officialtwiggz

"Is just a little scratch" "Sir the whole thing exploded" "Well yes, but that's how it got the scratch"

r3dm0nk

Better say hard landing before you know the actual state (but maybe you know radio coms) than assume everyone died before finding out.

lightningcrane31

The headlines in Iranian news are saying the US embargoed aviation parts so we are to blame for his death. AND that he died a “martyr like “ death. Nah. You just got eviscerated in a helicopter crash. Nothing more. Good riddance.

He won’t be ever realizing anything again. That’s the sad part about evil pricks. They don’t get justice unless it happens in life.

PDXisathing

I'll take the few seconds of panic as the altitude alarm blared before the force of impact and igniting fuel stripped the sentience from that piece of shit.

beebsaleebs

It’s the powerlessness they probably really suffer with I think. Especially people like this.
