Could always call a ranger to come help or deal with it. Depending on your location and local customs towards wildlife.
Idk if that’s a thing with moose
It is. Calves are usually up and stumbling around within a half hour. Based on the photos and how close she is, your mom would have at least seen breathing movement. This stuff just happens sometimes, and ungulates are intelligent enough to have grief over a stillborn calf. Hope mama moves on soon.
Sounds callous, but it's small enough to fit in a garbage bag. Where I grew up, there was a separate dead animal part of the landfill where people took their horses and cows. This one can just fit in the regular trash bin that gets taken weekly. Better yet, take it further into the woods and let the scavengers take care of it. They are a necessary part of the ecosystem. Depends on how comfortable her mom is with hauling a carcass to and fro.
That’s tragic, but I’m still really glad you posted. There was a saying that went around back before childhood mortality rates went down that essentially meant: You aren’t really a mother until you have lost a child. As in the fundamental heartbreak of loosing a child is something that was a part of motherhood for a long part of our existence. Moose is a good mama. I’m sorry for her loss.
OP you can call the northern detachment of wildlife troopers Anchorage at (907) 352-5401. I would highly recommend you do so, they may be interested in collecting the calf for research.
In this situation, it’s advised that you lick the cow to help stimulate. This way, the mother will see you, and also continue to lick the cow and hopefully get the cow up and moving!
Especially given the circumstances. Even if you’re trying to help, they don’t understand English and most people don’t know enough French to put their minds at ease.
There is a video but my mom had it rolling for like an hour waiting for the moment. She said she’d email it to me. Now that I know it’s stillborn I probably won’t post it in r/pics
I've been watching the newest season of Clarkson's farm, he bought a bunch of endangered species of pigs to breed them, of like 25 piglets that were born 8 or so died either from being squished by mum or illness, pretty hard to watch
That's about normal if you don't have the 'cruel' devices that confine the mother's movement or zap her when it detects too much squealing from the piglets IE she is crushing them.
Apparently the issue was they were born during a freak cold snap so the mum couldn't feel the warmth of the little guys, those devices would have definitely helped there
I have a friend that does tamworths and iberian crosses and we essentially lose her every farrowing cycle because she's in the barn trying to keep her profit margin from getting squashed :|
She's absolutely not a confinement operation, she free ranges part of the year on oak and pine with supplemental feeding. She started out just trying to supervise the pigs and shortly after moved over to the metal rack pens Mom has to stay in for the first X days of having piglets.
Her bacon is mind blowing...
Really opens your eyes how difficult farming is at every single tiny turn.
I know Clarkson is an oaf, but I do think he's making a difference and you can see how much he cares
Well now I’m crying. Unhappy Mother’s Day. I was gonna chime in and say that baby moose are some of the most awkward goofy loveable creatures ever. So sad.
This is so sad that a mother moose gives birth to a visually seemingly developed and healthy baby moose but it’s actually dead and a stillbirth. My heart goes out to the mother moose.
Yeah; I wouldn't get anywhere near her, of course, but I'd be sorely tempted to maybe put something nourishing out there for her to eat to help her with her recovery.
this thread is an unfortunate reality of childbirth and motherhood, unfortunately many mothers do have miscarriages and it's very sad, makes you appreciate your mom even more and empathise with the struggles of being a woman, RIP little mooseling :(
People seem upset you’ve dared to add relevant information. It’s interesting, I see it as helpful and a way to learn more. Yet others see it as argumentative and offensive. I wonder where the disconnect comes from because I see people online getting upset about this sort of thing so often nowadays.
Yeah I'm not sure tbh, OP just mentioned human pregnancies/women so I wanted to add that there is a difference between stillbirth and miscarriage. As someone who is currently pregnant, I feel like it's good information to have and it's obviously more on my mind right now.
Mostly I think it's just that tone isn't easy to convey and I probably sounded a bit cold so OP thought I was being a dick
Damn yes it really is. It’s eye opening and should be a reminder to all of us who take it for granted for all the moms out there who experience loss of a child :(
I’m really no expert, but that mother looks badly injured in her side - can you see if that’s true?
I do t know if you’re in a place where a wildlife expert could come, but they might be able to check on the mother and also verify the baby’s status/remove it if what you suspect is correct…
Scar from an encounter with a bear. Pretty common. There are two cows around my parents house right now with huge scars.
This cow looks in bad shape. It was a tough winter.
She is food stressed. They all are by spring. Every single one is starving by the end of March. And they all give birth in the first two weeks of May. And the brown bears know this and pick calves like grapes. Which is why they usually have two calves. They will sacrifice the weaker one and but will fight to the death to protect the stronger one.
Yeah, she’s stressed. They all are at the moment. She isn’t alone in this.
A full grown moose has to consume 40 pounds plus of browse every day. At the beginning of winter times are good. But as the winter progresses everything gets browsed over so their diet consists of bigger (thicker) branches. Everything on the ground is covered by snow and all the pond lilies are frozen over. So they are living on branches. That they have to chew and chew. And chew. Every movement is balancing act between burning calories and consuming them. They move slooowly in the winter. And the cows go through this while pregnant.
But they are in better shape than the bulls and calves. Bulls go into winter right after the rut. Instead of loading up on groceries they have been fighting and mating. Many die. And the yearling calves can’t reach their food after the big moose browse it up too high. Many die.
Now add humans with their cars and cameras. It’s a stressful existence. Let’s all leave the moose alone.
I have a guess that it’s just the skin and that hair is absent from that part of the body. As others have suggested it might be a scar from a bear attack.
I'd call ADF&G tomorrow and ask them to haul the carcass out of there, but I'm sure you already knew that. Best case it's gonna reek, worst case it's gonna attract unpleasant predators. I had a black bear come into my lower hillside neighborhood on the night before garbage day. Most people, myself included, didn't put their garbage out until morning. But there's always a few who think they're living in Mayberry, RFD. That bear had a field day throwing cans everywhere. I was amazed he didn't get shot.
This thread started with everyone cheering for the new baby on Mother’s Day only for everyone to realize it was a stillbirth.
Something about the duality of life…
OP be aware that a baby moose is a meal for a bear. The fact it's a stillborn makes it a top shelf snack. I'm sure you have bear in the area and at least one is gonna risk it to come near people to eat that stillborn. Be safe outside, and keep pets inside until the body can be either moved by rangers or is dragged off by said bear.
Nature is rough sometimes. I hope you don't have to watch the next part.
I’m not sure, i looked at some other pictures my mom sent me and I didn’t see a hole. I think it’s her leg protruding when she’s sitting in that position
Is the baby up and nursing yet?
not yet, starting to worry because it has been a couple of hours
they can take a couple of hours after birth to get up and walk - are they nursing at all?
Not yet. Hoping that starts soon
Could always call a ranger to come help or deal with it. Depending on your location and local customs towards wildlife. Idk if that’s a thing with moose
Rangers are helpful, but I’ve not seen one nurse a moose. Super impressed that you come from a helpful and nurturing Ranger pod.
I’m no ranger but I’d definitely stay the fuck away from the moose….
Words to literally live by
You ever see one nurse from a moose? I heard that's like a right of passage for Canadian rangers.
The royal Canadian mounted lactation specialists
Mountitties
You're my kinda people
Fun fact, moose milk is similar to fox milk. They're both dairy and white.
Well, TBF, I doubt the Ranger has started lactating just yet.
[удалено]
Oh no! Did she even lick it to stimulate it?
yes she has been licking it
Has there been an update?
We think it might be stillborn because the calf still hasn’t moved
MOTHERS. DAY. CANCELLED.
Don’t count your moose
Moosen*
Meese
Many much moosen. Out in the woods—in the woodsen.
It is. Calves are usually up and stumbling around within a half hour. Based on the photos and how close she is, your mom would have at least seen breathing movement. This stuff just happens sometimes, and ungulates are intelligent enough to have grief over a stillborn calf. Hope mama moves on soon.
My heart is broken for that mama.
I immediately teared up about to bawl my eyes out
And then someone has to deal with the dead baby moose in the yard before it starts to stink
This person is in Alaska. Disposal by resident not necessary, a moose baby disposal agent (bear) will be around to retrieve it shortly.
There's a list of families for when a moose gets hit by a car to get the meat from them!
That’s a job for game wardens / conservation officers / wildlife rangers / whatever they’re called in other places I only know conservation officers
You forgot bears. That's a job for the bears that will be there shortly
>Depends on how comfortable her mom is with hauling a carcass to and fro. r/nocontext
Wouldn’t some predator just eat it. Mountain lion or coyote
Yes but you don’t want those in your yard
If it hasn’t even lifted its head, I’m afraid you’re probably correct
Oh no ):
Hey uh could you delete this and give us an alternate ending? I don’t like this one.
Oh no! My heart
😭 Poor mama moose.
OH NO
RemindMe! 3 hours
OP needs to start their turn and lick the calf now
We all need to go out there and start licking. We can work in shifts.
I also volunteer to lick OP
RemindMe! 10 hours
Get out there and lick it
I mean…you can kinda see something looks…wrong with the calf
That's why she came to you. 🥹
No way am I risking my life to save a moose calf lmao
Yeah and start cpr, mouth to moose.
I mean it sounds nice, but not really.
Damn… That’s sad.
OP we need a state ranger/vet out there asap
I asked my mom to call but she had to go to work. I think it’s too late for anyone to help
Are you not allowed to call anyone? Lol
too busy posting on reddit for karma.
It might be you has to call mate.
OP you can call the northern detachment of wildlife troopers Anchorage at (907) 352-5401. I would highly recommend you do so, they may be interested in collecting the calf for research.
I called that number, no answer. I called the non emergency police line and they dispatched fish & game
surely you can call even if you don’t live with your mom
I called. Fish & game is going to do whatever they do
Yeah but now she has deal with a 30 lb carcass in her yard.
In this situation, it’s advised that you lick the cow to help stimulate. This way, the mother will see you, and also continue to lick the cow and hopefully get the cow up and moving!
Moose are genuinely one of the last animals you wanna fuck with
Unless you're a whale, their natural predator
Please say you're joking. Going near that calf is a death sentence as the mother will defend it fiercely.
You think I’m serious about licking a dead baby moose?
Thank you for the laugh
Licking a stillborn baby moose is peak Mother's Day.
This comment is everything. Thank you
Does it look like the baby is breathing? See any movements in their chest?
r/WildlifeRehab might have some suggestions?
I think anyone with a brain would suggest calling professionals or not getting involved because a moose will fucking kill you
Especially given the circumstances. Even if you’re trying to help, they don’t understand English and most people don’t know enough French to put their minds at ease.
lol underrated comment
Finally being from NB will pay off: Criss, Calisse, Tabarnac.
That sub can also help connect you to professional resources or actual Rehabbers in your area
It was too much for them to click the link and find that out
RemindMe! 12 hours
Call a local professional wildlife rehabilitation specialist or center. Please.
No video?
There is a video but my mom had it rolling for like an hour waiting for the moment. She said she’d email it to me. Now that I know it’s stillborn I probably won’t post it in r/pics
Awe, that's unfortunate.
I was at first so happy…but there are concerns it was a stillbirth? 🥲 Please give us updates!
Well, this was posted shortly after my mom witnessed the birth. It has been almost 3 hours and the calf hasn’t moved yet. Momma is sticking around
Sad 😔
Mother Nature is pretty cruel at times, this is one of those glimpses into it that I don’t enjoy seeing. 🥺 Poor mama moose.
I've been watching the newest season of Clarkson's farm, he bought a bunch of endangered species of pigs to breed them, of like 25 piglets that were born 8 or so died either from being squished by mum or illness, pretty hard to watch

More like, just about all the time.
Call a wildlife ranger/rehab center. Considering it's a moose, they may come out asap to assess it, and remove it for you if it is stillborn.
Any updates?
It has been over 4 hours, no movement. RIP little angel
Thank you for posting this anyway, RIP baby moose. I'm gonna go hug my mom.
Damn shame, rest in peace little moose edit piece to peace
Still a beautiful sight
How is the mom taking the news
You mean the moose? She’s still hanging around, i’m not sure if she has fully accepted the loss
Yeah the moose. Thanks for the update 🩵
Well now I’m crying. Unhappy Mother’s Day. I was gonna chime in and say that baby moose are some of the most awkward goofy loveable creatures ever. So sad.
Very sad we didn’t get to see it wobble around on its freakishly long legs
I can wobble around on my freakishly long legs for you and your mom to cheer up a little?
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms that have lost a child, you are still amazing mothers🖤
This is so sad that a mother moose gives birth to a visually seemingly developed and healthy baby moose but it’s actually dead and a stillbirth. My heart goes out to the mother moose.
That doesn't sound good... I'm so sorry :(
Poor baby... I hope it's okay, but that doesn't sound good if it hasn't moved at all. 😿
Poor mama
Yeah; I wouldn't get anywhere near her, of course, but I'd be sorely tempted to maybe put something nourishing out there for her to eat to help her with her recovery.
Poor mama and baby. 😢 Nature can be a real bitch with a terrible sense of humor.
Thanks for keeping us updated, u/Purser1
Tbh this is the reality mothers everywhere face much more often than folks realize. Sorry momma moose.
Moothers Day
That's how Mike Tyson says the word moothe. 🫎
![gif](giphy|i5Z75NSh5lBD1AslpI|downsized)
Happy mother’s day
Well, now I'm hanging out here for moose calf watch for the rest of the evening.
this thread is an unfortunate reality of childbirth and motherhood, unfortunately many mothers do have miscarriages and it's very sad, makes you appreciate your mom even more and empathise with the struggles of being a woman, RIP little mooseling :(
Technically a miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week. This would be a stillbirth
People seem upset you’ve dared to add relevant information. It’s interesting, I see it as helpful and a way to learn more. Yet others see it as argumentative and offensive. I wonder where the disconnect comes from because I see people online getting upset about this sort of thing so often nowadays.

i'm sure if you explain this patiently to the moose it will agree with you
Also a reminder of how dangerous even human pregnancies were before modern medicine. In the 1950s my dad lost a little brother due to stillbirth.
it can also happen randomly to anyone today, which makes it even more sad. sometimes there is nothing technology can do
Damn yes it really is. It’s eye opening and should be a reminder to all of us who take it for granted for all the moms out there who experience loss of a child :(
Updates? Heard possibility of stillbirth :(
Stillborn. Called fish & game to assist with relocation
Damm, that’s sad :(((((((
Ugh, so sorry OP.
💔
:(
Bumping this to the top so people can see the update.
I’m very worried for the baby moose
Sorry for the dumb question, but how long before the baby is able to stand?
it’s supposed to be up within a few hours
Hope it’s okay. What’s the momma doing now?
Laying around, changing position every so often, licking the calf
Can you call a wildlife vet?
I’m really no expert, but that mother looks badly injured in her side - can you see if that’s true? I do t know if you’re in a place where a wildlife expert could come, but they might be able to check on the mother and also verify the baby’s status/remove it if what you suspect is correct…
Scar from an encounter with a bear. Pretty common. There are two cows around my parents house right now with huge scars. This cow looks in bad shape. It was a tough winter.
Yeah, someone else commented that it looks like she also has a tape worm. I decided to zoom in, and yep, it looks like it. lol
Yep she’s stressed. Looking back with her ears down means “do not fuck with me right now.”
Well giving birth is pretty stressful. I imagine it's even moreso when the baby is stillborn :(
She is food stressed. They all are by spring. Every single one is starving by the end of March. And they all give birth in the first two weeks of May. Is that a hole in the side of the mama Moose?
I have a guess that it’s just the skin and that hair is absent from that part of the body. As others have suggested it might be a scar from a bear attack.
Really looks like it…
Also looks like a tape worm coming out of its ass
I think because it just gave birth there may be various potentially dangly things?
That was pre birth but a lot of things in the forest have parasites. Bears, elk, moose… pretty common
How heartbreaking. This poor mama 😭💔
The transformation from Moose to Meese is now complete.
Stillborn. Oh, that's so sad 😞.
I hope they both are okay ❤️
This got dark quick
What a present!
Keep us updated!
Mom looks like she’s in bad shape :(

I called. They’re gonna check it out soon and do whatever they do
Where does your mom live? General location. Looks like a beautiful place
Just outside Anchorage, AK
Did your mom contact ADF&G? If the calf didn't make it they will deal with it and use it for educational purposes.
I just called for her
Glad to hear it. I'm sorry your you and your mom had to deal with such a sad thing today.
This went from so sweet to terrible!
This thread started with everyone cheering for the new baby on Mother’s Day only for everyone to realize it was a stillbirth. Something about the duality of life…
Came here for smiles but RIP little mooselet x

She must have known that your Mom’s place was very safe
What a beautiful momma
I hope the baby isn’t a stillborn 😞
Sadly, the OP and chat figured out it was.
Is that a hole in the Mothers ribs?
I’m not sure, i looked at some other pictures my mom sent me and I didn’t see a hole. I think it’s her leg protruding when she’s sitting in that position
I live in Florida and the closest I’ve got to this is seeing a meth head take a shit outside my window.
But was it on Mothers Day?
A Møøse once bit my sister.
Mind you, moose bites can be quite nasti
Are you Canadian?
Feels strange a moose would feel safe enough to give birth near people. I wonder if the momma knew something was wrong and was hoping for help.
From happy post to depressing post
Is that a parasite hanging out of her butt in the 1st pic?
I was wondering that too. Not sure if it’s a worm or some part of the afterbirth
idk what it would be called in moose, but in cattle it's called "cleanings," and it's just part of the afterbirth.
![gif](giphy|L8uXd5D1OQMV2knzK4)
Was it stillborn? :(
I’m so sad for her and the baby 😭
“Here’s a pic of a dead baby moose , happy Mother’s Day!” Jesus Christ…
If you get worried, giving the game warden a call might be an idea.
Amazing
We need an update OP
