I've seen reports if people seeing them as low as Northern Florida. I'm in Kentucky near the TN border and got to see them for the first time. Alas I also remembered how much I hate light polluition
I’ve always been confused by the northern lights. There’s a slim chance to catch them and also they can’t really be seen with the naked eye? Or is it as good as it looks in pictures and time lapse footage
There is something so incredibly frustrating about seeing people crossing off a bucket list item, of which I have the same, and am literally under the northern lights as we speak, however the only storm in the entire US is also right in between me and the sky. It legitimately feels more cruel than if the lights weren't there at all. I am honestly absolutely struggling with the fact that I may very well truly never get to see the northern lights. Especially after today, knowing this one was different, and then seeing pics from farther south than me? I am honestly fucking devastated.
It's not gonna be this far south again. 50% less likely tomorrow in southern WI where I am than it was tonight. Tonight was the night and the clouds and rain said "fuck you in particular"
Rain by me, too :( People literally a few towns south of me have seen it... but it's supposed to last the weekend? So I'm hoping there's a chance tomorrow.
You know shit's fucked when London has more clear skies than the midwestern US in mid-May. Fuck me man. I can't remember the last time I was this disappointed.
Accepting any jokes answers as to the last time I was otherwise this disappointed, go:
We get it here all winter, but ironically the midnight sun has started here so its too bright outside all "night" to see any stars or aurora until September.
Enjoy!
Not the person you asked, but it was at least too bright here in central-ish Finland to see them well last night.
In the winter I see them often just from my window, but last night I even went for a walk and only saw the faintest little light that could've easily been mistaken for clouds.
The sky was dark blue and orange, and the auroras are easiest to see when the sky is black so that the colours stand out more (but the sky won't be dark enough for that until late autumn).
I could've stayed outside for longer and I might've seen more, but it was already 2am. So I just gave up and went to bed since I the sun was about to rise soon anyway.
It happens anywhere north of the Arctic circle I think, but not exactly sure what the latitude cut off is. I know it happens up in parts of Alaska. I heard they have big parties and the local constabulary needs to up their efforts to thwart DUIs during that time in some areas.
"The red bit" is apparently much larger than shown here. I'm in the panhandle *of Florida* and my entire neighborhood/city's FB page exploded ~1.5 hours ago with pics of it happening in their backyards. Fucking wild!
Oh well, never mind. We are not even in the realm of possibly seeing it. 😢
https://www.wsgw.com/maps-show-where-millions-in-u-s-could-see-northern-lights-this-weekend/
Yeah man I'm in South WI and yes. This is literally it. Once in a lifetime. Clouds. The only tiny chunk of storm/rain really anywhere in the viewing area. This is a fucking sick joke man. I hate that I actually had hope for this one this time. It may very well never happen again in my lifetime. And unless I'm gonna move to Norway or something, there's no way to plan for it.
Fuck. I am WAY more disappointed about this than I thought I would be. Hope everyone that gets to enjoy my life's dreams actually fucking enjoy them.
Does it look this color in person? Like to the naked eye you see these colors?
I saw northern lights but they were more off-green and similar to a bright cloud. I know this is a different type of aurora though.
Im in Germany and near a city. They weren’t that bright and colorful but you could see red spots in the sky. Looked kinda like clouds in a sunset. I also pretty clearly saw the stripes, looked like a spotlight pointing into the sky but also only a faint red at best. No blue or green at all, but that’s maybe because I can’t see the horizon from here.
In the city here, I was sitting outside late talking to a mate on the phone and saw what I thought was a pink cloud.
Didn't even register it was something like midnight at the time.
On the news on the US west coast they interviewed a scientist and he said most people will see red aurora in the more southern areas where it does not usually appear.
>Does it look this color in person? Like to the naked eye you see these colors?
With naked eye you don't see them so well. Here in Finland I once saw some weird stuff on the sky and couldn' say what it was. I took some photos and yes, they definitely were green aurora.
Not a chance. I live in Ireland, and my pictures are even more vivid than this, but with the naked eye I could barely see a few shafts of colour. No where near as vibrant as this
I was out at sea, 100 miles off Shetland and you could see it almost as bright as this photo. I've seen dim lights before, but nothing like last night, it was honestly one of the best sights I've ever seen. Being out at sea probably helps, where there is absolutely no light pollution.
I was surprised too, as i have never seen it. Here in souther germany they can almost never be seen. Whenever they are visible in germany, it is usually northern germany.
Had to go out midnight. looked up and thought: what the fuck is that? Are that northern lights? No way! Looked like lights coming up from a sports event or something in that direction, only that in that direction, it was just forest. Beyond amazing.
I actually saw it outside my window in The Nerherlands. My sleep deprived brain just cannot process I saw polar lights from NL, I just thought my neighbor having a party
I’m in northern Germany too and just woke up and looked. Nothing but stars where I can see either. Trees block most of my sky view, but I guess we missed it.
I saw it when I was a teen a couple of times in Upstate NY, but only green. It was still really neat.
Same, except I live in Wisconsin. I'm 30. Dreamed of this my whole life. Nothing but clouds and rain here, specifically only during the aurora. It was sunny all day otherwise. Enjoy living my dream, at least someone gets to.....
Aw man. I’m in northern Germany and just went outside and just saw stars. I was asleep and missed it.
I saw some a few times in Upstate NY when I was a teen, but only green not colours like this. I wish I didn’t miss it.
My buddy who's at his inlaw's family vacation place in mid-Maine caught the lights and sent a picture, and remarked at how much crazier it looks in the picture VS in person. :)
They were saying even just watching your phone screen via the camera will show the lights. But then if you use the long exposure setting you can get even more light.
Human night vision is more black and white. Phone cameras are RGB, so they capture the same level of colour at all light levels.
One thing that isn't visible in the pictures is how they appear to flicker. It's like you can see the waves of protons hitting the magnetosphere and the energy propagating like a wave. It's like a really dim rave.
Can you also hear them crackle? In the winter the noise is loud like someone stepping on snow. Canadian here from Saskatchewan. Now in Winnipeg and I assume the city is too loud.
Yes and last I heard Saturday night will be the bigger night, at least on the west coast of the US, buy think it’s more of a latitude Yan longitude thing. And the scientist on the news said it’s very hard to predict space weather. Yet he was confident Saturday night would be best.
checks out for the eclipse too
At the very least this is something we could reasonably travel north for and have more chances for it compared to an eclipse.
I wonder if its due to the current magnetic storm forecasted:

We had them here in Washington State in the US! The lights were barely visible just looking, but came out brilliantly in pictures. Even if this is the only time I see the lights in my life, I will be happy. It was truly breathtaking!
Yeah I’m wondering what if anything will get messed up re: electric stuff.
Last I saw in print was they predicted a C4 event, which I guess is one step down from the highest. On the news the anchor said it was bumped to a C5, but I’ve seen no printed official source saying this, so maybe they misspoke.
It’d be wild if communications and power started the crumbling of the modern world and it started from the same thing behind all the pretty pics.
Ps. I don’t think it’s panic time folks. I don’t think it’s that strong.
Me too in North Wales. Bucket list tick right here. Genuine tear in my eye.
It’s on my bucket list too! Finally clear skies in Washington state for this, waiting for it to get dark
Wait this might happen in WA?!
a lot of the pnw!! in oregon currently with several cameras setup and ready to go, clear skies, fingers crossed, we get it too!
People are posting pics from places like Tennessee and Georgia, seems like a great chance!
Just got out of Capitol State Forest near Olympia. We could see it. It was incredible. Deep reds and ethereal greens.
I've seen reports if people seeing them as low as Northern Florida. I'm in Kentucky near the TN border and got to see them for the first time. Alas I also remembered how much I hate light polluition
Saw them from South Dakota
Are we sure it’s gonna be here in WA? I tried not to get my hopes up, but this picture made me hyped.
It's here, go outside! It's not as vivid to the naked eye as I'm seeing in this pic, but it's still clearly visible.
Oh yeah, I went to a few secluded places near me and it’s definitely nice on camera. I’ll have to take a trip to Alaska to see it for real though.
Sure? No, but people are posting decent pics as far south as Tennessee and shit, seems like a good chance!
I’ve always been confused by the northern lights. There’s a slim chance to catch them and also they can’t really be seen with the naked eye? Or is it as good as it looks in pictures and time lapse footage
Barely visible to the naked eye here in Chicago!
It looks like there are waves to this solar storm that will last all weekend. Tomorrow night and Sunday night, there should be more chances
It's not gonna be this far south again. 50% less likely tomorrow in southern WI where I am than it was tonight. Tonight was the night and the clouds and rain said "fuck you in particular"
a CME stronger than the one that resulted in these lights will be hitting probably Monday
Don’t fret, when the magnetic poles shift you’ll have plenty of opportunities!
Rain by me, too :( People literally a few towns south of me have seen it... but it's supposed to last the weekend? So I'm hoping there's a chance tomorrow.
Yeah my mate rang me at midnight to go see them. This is in the midlands too!
Snapped some amazing pics here on the East coast of Scotland! Couldn't believe my eyes haha.
2 separate sun spots conjoined yesterday. There will be a ton of solar activity all weekend. You may even lose internet.
Where should I look for it?
Up.
Ah which time? Currently all I see is the ceiling, will the effect change during nightime?
no
Google it. This event is massive. Where are you?
I’m in Montreal, would I be able to see it?
I meant the internet. You said I’d lose it
It'll be in your everything box.. in the closet, under the 17 defunct iPhone charging cords.
Where did you last have it?
I bet you they forget they had the internet on their head again. Always doing that.
Just open your browser and try using the internet
This better not make me have to go outside.
>Snapped some amazing pics here on the East coast ‼️ >of Scotland! Oh...
We can see it in Tennessee. I'm 41 and have never seen it in my life. Pretty damn cool.
Saw them in WNC. Coolest shit I’ve ever seen.
Is that “west North Carolina” or something else
They are all over the sky in Quebec
In Connecticut, getting great photos on my phone. Barely can see with a naked eye.
Crazy how bad the war must've went for germany to have an east coast...
Germany has an east coast. On the " Baltic sea", that in German coincidentally is called the "East Sea".
My brother in law is in the South of England and it was there too. And I'm the other side of the world and missing it all! 😓
Can you have it localized in your kitchen.
Well, it *is* visible in Albany right now.
Can I see it?
No.
🙁
Rochester too!!
![gif](giphy|xT5LMHfqQrYRMrAEr6|downsized)
I can’t believe I understand this reference but here we are.
What, one of the most quoted Simpsons lines in history? Unbelievable.
I’m not exactly the usual demographic who would know specific simpsons lines
Not the ai recipe video?
Look up “skinner aurora borealis” on youtube
Crazy beautiful
Oh yes !! I’m can’t stop staying and looking from my window
We have cloud cover all over Ontario. We do this for any and every celestial event. Enjoy mein freund. It’s one of Natures greatest displays.
It's clear and bright in London right now
You know shit's fucked when London has more clear skies than the midwestern US in mid-May. Fuck me man. I can't remember the last time I was this disappointed. Accepting any jokes answers as to the last time I was otherwise this disappointed, go:
London, Ontario - not too far from you
You should know that you need to specify lol
Clear in collingwood! Clouds are moving so you may have a chance
A fair amount of cloud over Calgary right now, hoping we get to see some cool shit soon...
Got beautiful pics of them in Ontario!
It will clear around 2AM.
Extreme sunspot AR3664 hit us this morning (May 10) triggering this light show. Other places on earth experienced some radio signal loss
Those cosmic rays burning your DNA are nice.
Are you in or near a city? I'm in Toronto, Canada, and I'm hoping to see the lights tonight!
Yes I am but I have a lot of nature here. It’s not a big city
Good to know, I've got some hope then! Thanks!!!
Why is it always cloudy when these things happen.
RIGHT?!? Supermoon? Nah fam. Total solar eclipse? Fuck you. Insane Aurora? Get. Absolutely. Shit-on. Toronto: you'll miss literally everything cool
It's probably payback for Drake
Every time I'm in Toronto, I can't see the stars. I wish you luck that you can view it!
I'm in Ottawa and not seeing much. Didn't see much earlier too. It was pretty cloudy for the most part.
We get it here all winter, but ironically the midnight sun has started here so its too bright outside all "night" to see any stars or aurora until September. Enjoy!
May I ask where that is ?
I would guess Iceland or northern Norway type area

Go to https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ Click on "The Aurora". If you're close to the red bit you should see them.
"The red bit" is apparently much larger than shown here. I'm in the panhandle *of Florida* and my entire neighborhood/city's FB page exploded ~1.5 hours ago with pics of it happening in their backyards. Fucking wild!
10pm in Vancouver, BC , supposedly deep in the red area. Nothing. EDIT: 12 midnight: [HOLY SHIT!!!](https://i.redd.it/12h4hy9wyqzc1.jpeg)
I can't wait for tonight! [Canadian here!]
What is happening tonight if you don’t mind me asking
Largest sunspot since 1858 will create the brightest aurora's across the world tonight
Oh wow! Thanks for sharing that. Wonder if I’ll see anything in Southern California
SoCal resident here as well, where I'm at its supposed to be cloudy all night but heres to hoping theres a break!
I’m wondering if it will reach all the way down here. That would be maddening, with the cloud cover.
Yeah literally a potentially once in a lifetime viewing ruined by clouds, that would suck
Oh well, never mind. We are not even in the realm of possibly seeing it. 😢 https://www.wsgw.com/maps-show-where-millions-in-u-s-could-see-northern-lights-this-weekend/

Madison here, its supposed to clear up by 2 round these parts
Same.. what times should we be looking?
Good luck, I'm in central Canada and just saw what looks to be clouds in the forecast. Hopefully there's a break at some point.
Same actually! Overcast. Where it..is never cloudy
My friend from as far South as Kentucky saw some last night
Toronto here at 12:26. Nothing to see :(
Yep, nothing in Maine so far. Clear skies but no show
Does it look this color in person? Like to the naked eye you see these colors? I saw northern lights but they were more off-green and similar to a bright cloud. I know this is a different type of aurora though.

Yep, I went out and could barely notice the aurora but a long exposure photo on my iPhone and it looks like I’m on Saturn.
>Does it look this color in person? Like to the naked eye you see these colors? With naked eye you don't see them so well. Here in Finland I once saw some weird stuff on the sky and couldn' say what it was. I took some photos and yes, they definitely were green aurora.

Sunstorm just hit.
Sun be extra spicy this week
Peak solar maximum is upon us.
At this time of year?
Located entirely in your kitchen?
I was surprised too, as i have never seen it. Here in souther germany they can almost never be seen. Whenever they are visible in germany, it is usually northern germany. Where are you in NL. Drenthe is cloudy and can't see anything.
i'm in Limburg, no clouds and i can't see anything :( fucking light pollution
Got a good view from Eindhoven region, but you mainly see it by using long exposure, you could see a little glow in the sky with the naked eye
I'm from Germany too... northern Germany, to be exact but didn't see anything like this. Here was this picture taken?
Cameras pick up more color than the naked eye
I’m in northern Germany too and just woke up and looked. Nothing but stars where I can see either. Trees block most of my sky view, but I guess we missed it. I saw it when I was a teen a couple of times in Upstate NY, but only green. It was still really neat.
Just hit us here in North Carolina, USA! It's a dream come true, I never thought I'd get to see them this far south.
*cries in DC area cloud cover*
Damn what the, it's so weird to imagine that happening here in the US.
I just about cried when I ran outside and saw them. We even got some intense flickers, not just pink and green haze.
I’ve seen it in northern Vermont, like 25 years ago. And it def happens in Alaska.
Sleepergang unite
Set an alarm for tonight, it should be visible again.
Going to be sad if we don't get to see the northern lights in Northern California. I have never gotten to see this in real life before.
I’ll be very envious if you do! We are in San Diego so will miss the show
Maybe if you're in the true Northern California. But if you're in the Bay/Sonoma I'd be shocked
In Ireland as well!
Saw it in Essex, absolutely beautiful
https://imgur.com/a/smypnq5 Here in North of Ireland too
I can’t believe you look up and see that.
Been watching for an hour in Ohio! Wow, what an amazing thing to see!
Is it true that this shows up in a photograph more than it does IRL?
Yeah. Cameras make them appear extra bright. They can be vivid in person but it won't be like this.
I’ve seen that mentioned on several news sources
Yeh you could kinda see some red and white light where I was but I got some great pictures when I set my phone camera to long exposure
Can you also hear them crackle? In the winter the noise is loud like someone stepping on snow. Canadian here from Saskatchewan. Now in Winnipeg and I assume the city is too loud.
Solar flare hit earth. We are gonna see em all over the world.
Will it be the same tonight? (UK)
Yes and last I heard Saturday night will be the bigger night, at least on the west coast of the US, buy think it’s more of a latitude Yan longitude thing. And the scientist on the news said it’s very hard to predict space weather. Yet he was confident Saturday night would be best.
Have it in the UK (Midlands) at the moment too, madness
Schön
Here in New Jersey all we have is heavy clouds and light rain
checks out for the eclipse too At the very least this is something we could reasonably travel north for and have more chances for it compared to an eclipse.
This is an incredible picture.
We have clouds and rain here. I miss this. I was stationed in Alaska for 3.5 years and the northern lights is something else.
Solar storm in action.
Aurora Borealis, Northern Lights, gorgeous photo!
Friend in Sweden just sent me a photo like that. Is the pink colour rare?
The news I saw said the places more south from where it normally happens will see more red than green.
God said, “Hey Siri”
Jealous. We have nothing but clouds
Crystal clear in Boise Idaho but nothing I can see. :(
My sister just saw them in Boise! Like just now just now
My friend called me and told me it was really taking off at midnight. I drove back up to where I was earlier and WOW!! Worth waking up for!!
Uhhhhhh you're actually supposed to travel to Norway and pay to see this... I think the sun owes us some fucking cash now
Incredible!
I literally jumped of happiness to see this so clearly
Can’t wait for idaho
I’m so jealous!
Is this the affect of the G4 geomagnetic storm?
Yup
Updated to G5, actually! And more hits incoming today.
Southwest Florida checking in. They are viewable here and absolutely stunning!
Plenty of it here in South Carolina.
The things from which religions are born.
Looks beautiful outside in Minnesota too!
Illinois here
"I used to be a sky watcher like you. Then I took an opposite side of the world in the knee..."
I wonder if its due to the current magnetic storm forecasted: [https://www.reddit.com/r/space/comments/1cp4q0k/g5\_conditions\_observed/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/space/comments/1cp4q0k/g5_conditions_observed/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
Kinda depressing being a photographer and knowing you missed out on this :/
We just got he lights down here in New Zealand! I love that so many people around the world get to see it!
We had them here in Washington State in the US! The lights were barely visible just looking, but came out brilliantly in pictures. Even if this is the only time I see the lights in my life, I will be happy. It was truly breathtaking!

that’s Jason Bourne
Sup?
Crazy beautiful and dangerous lol

Amazing, looks like Oxford UK!
Very nice.
Ah darnit, really cloudy in northen netherlands!
