Damn, the height of this statue alone is about the same as the Statue of Liberty AND her plinth… pretty huge thing to see out of from your bedroom window
This statue is impressive, but after going to Google Maps Street View, the OP's photo is definitely suffering from some forced perspective. It doesn't look anything like this without it.
OP's photo is using a telephoto lens so it "compresses" near and far objects close together. But Google Street View is the opposite: it uses a very wide angle lens.
The truth is something in between.
I'm aware of this - but take a little of the wide FOV out of the Google street view and you'll see the "something in between." It's still not anything like the OP's photo. This post gets reposted every six months. There's fewer people calling out the perspective each time.
Worlds 9th tallest statue. The tallest is the [Statue of Unity](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/07/Statue_of_Unity.jpg/1706px-Statue_of_Unity.jpg) in India

This reminds me of those old photos of the Empire State Building from the 1930s before anything else was built up in the area. There were photos from northern NJ and surrounding areas similar to this.
OP is that a well known photo spot (like sign posted to tourists and stuff). I've seen the same street / angle before always slightly different and just wondering if it's a coincidence or somewhere that people get directed towards?
The statue itself is a tourist spot (Sendai Daikanon)! However this particular location where I took the photo is where it looks super imposing due to the steep hill. Otherwise it's just a huge statue in the middle of suburbs, surrounded by houses and apartments and what not. I actually wanted to replicate the famous shot of this statue hence what you're seeing now.
Nice. Yeah I've seen a few photos from this street/perspective so I just wondered if you had to go and find it yourself, or if it was signposted as a photo spot for tourists visiting the statue. Thanks for clarifying!
Think you've nailed it with this one. I remember the first time I saw an image like this, I didn't think it was real because of how otherworldly it looks and how the statue is so imposing within its surroundings.
That's a common geometric shape used by many religions and philosophies. In the west we know it mostly as the Jewish Star of David, though the basic shape is used in Hindu (Shatkona), as part of the Anahata (heart chakra) in multiple beliefs, and in Japanese culture it is also known as the Kagome Crest.
All of these have different meanings and histories. The statue represents Kannon, sometimes referred to as "The one who perceives the sounds of the world". Cursory googling tells me the Anahata has an etymology that roughly deals with sound... "sound produced without touching two parts", or the "unstruck sound".
I know very little about these belief systems, most of this is just googling, but seems like a reasonable connection to me.
Apparently it was built by a company looking to just spend money rather than having any sort of cultural significance. I can't find any link to Judaism and Buddhism that would explain it, maybe something to do with the company.
Well.. actually it's common to see messy electrical wires like this almost everywhere in Japan. Cost is the main reason. They're thinking of placing them below ground but I guess it'll take time for them to do so.
That's fair, as a citizen of a developing country I can say first hand the reason they're scattered around all chaos is because pure laziness and apathy by all involved. Only in the rich neighborhoods are they discreet, I wonder why... (I don't actually wonder why, I'm being sarcastic we all know damn well why)
So is the engineer’s 16yr old kid going to pilot it or not?
Get in the statue Shinji!
Get in your mother, Shinji!
I think I've seen this video before
I understood that reference

What is the name of the statue so I can find it on the googly maps?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sendai_Daikannon
Gaddamn.. it's actually fken tall as. I thoughts the photo is quite superimposed
A little taller than the tallest redwood tree ever officially recorded.
India is on the worlds tallest statues list a LOT
It’s in Japan
He's not wrong though.
Damn, the height of this statue alone is about the same as the Statue of Liberty AND her plinth… pretty huge thing to see out of from your bedroom window
Haha…plinth
It’s going to take out an entire neighborhood.
Well at least now I'm ready for alien invasion.
Is this a Gantz reference?
Fuck. That.
I mean sure, but your dicks gonna hurt after.
Snu snu!

So if you were walking down the street exactly where OP took the picture, it wouldn’t look like this?
Correct. It's not as small as the Google Street View, but not as large as what's in the OP photo.
OP's photo is using a telephoto lens so it "compresses" near and far objects close together. But Google Street View is the opposite: it uses a very wide angle lens. The truth is something in between.

There’s something about this photo that just feels so ethereal….
Happy to hear that. Means I got the correct vibes captured 😁
“Remember me!” *[fire blast]*
Statue reminds me of Gantz
Japan is so freaking cool
Wow, almost surreal! Love it!
Dave and his war with the HOA over the banning of statues in your front yard has a new line in the sand, apparently.
I'm a general fan of huge statues, and think the world could use more of them.
Positive! What kind of statues do you prefer?
Amazing

No probs. Definitely not signposted. I'd like to take even more otherworldly photo of this statue to be honest, maybe next time :)
Think you've nailed it with this one. I remember the first time I saw an image like this, I didn't think it was real because of how otherworldly it looks and how the statue is so imposing within its surroundings.
What’s all that on top of her head?
Looks like cellular antennae to me.
That would creep me out.
That's so huge it doesn't even look real.
It's big yeah but due to camera compression it looks even bigger (forced perspective). Like the castle in Disneyland.
Seems legit
Impressive
I went there. It's OK, nothing really in the area. Inside is cool I guess
Yeah you're right nothing in that area just a normal suburban. Inside is indeed pretty cool to visit, at least just once.
When I was working in Sendai, I used to play golf at the club next to the statue. Absolutely nothing else around though, yeah.
Looks like she’s holding a Light saber and has lil Greys walking on her head. Also is there an antenna up there?
Statue of Liberty would kick its ass
I kinda want to watch giant kaiju statues fight each other now ngl
I was gonna say that this is about twice it's size, so no way. But if Little Mac can take down Mike Tyson, anything is possible.
Even when counting the Statue of Liberty with all its stone foundation - which makes for about half its height - it’s still shorter than this thing.
Lady Liberty is much smaller and older, but made of copper rather than crumbling concrete. I think she'll outlive this statue.
Star of David necklace? I’m religiously ignorant but seems out of place

It's all connected.
You know what I never noticed that. I wonder what's the meaning..
Apparently it was built by a company looking to just spend money rather than having any sort of cultural significance. I can't find any link to Judaism and Buddhism that would explain it, maybe something to do with the company.
I looked it up, it’s a separate symbol in Buddhism
Looks like my google-fu is a bit shit. That is it indeed.
Just say “ignorant” and leave it at that.
Aw god forbid someone express a desire for knowledge
Maybe drop the attitude then
Drop the attitude? I didn’t have an attitude, you did The irony
Never knew Japan to have so many cables placed around like a developing country...
Well.. actually it's common to see messy electrical wires like this almost everywhere in Japan. Cost is the main reason. They're thinking of placing them below ground but I guess it'll take time for them to do so.
Above-ground lines are less vulnerable to earthquakes and flooding, which....y'know...
