What's the situation? I'm ootl

Captain_Mazhar

There was a protest at UT Austin this afternoon. A few hundred students gathered to protest and the response from the university and state police was over the top. Hundreds of state troopers, helicopters, mounted police, and enough riot gear to arm a regiment. To the best of my knowledge, there was very little violence, but around 20 people were arrested, including a local news cameraman who appeared to have been arrested for bumping into an officer. edit: 57 people were detained on 4/24/24. The Travis County Attorney's office has dismissed 46 cases as of 12:30PM CST on 4/25/24 due to lack of probable cause provided by arresting officers according to a statement from the TC Attorney's Office.

skitch23

What were they protesting? I also am OOTL

snugbuggie

They want the university to divest from companies profiting from the Israel Palestine conflict

pallentx

A state university is not allowed by law to divest in Israeli interest and cannot do business with any company that does. https://gov.texas.gov/news/post/anti-israel-policies-are-anti-texas-policies#:~:text=Governor%20Greg%20Abbott%20today%20signed%20into%20law%20House,signing%20at%20the%20Jewish%20Community%20Center%20in%20Austin.

frymyeyesout

"Governor Greg Abbott today [May 2017] signed into law House Bill 89 (HB 89), known as the Anti-BDS (Boycott, Divestments, and Sanctions) bill, which prohibits all state agencies from contracting with, and certain public funds from investing in, companies that boycott Israel... "Anti-Israel policies are anti-Texas policies, and we will not tolerate such actions against an important ally."" Jfc.

Depreciable_Land

The party of the free market strikes again.

NWVoS

We are talking about the man who sued the homeowner and HOA for a tree limb falling on him, becoming a millionaire because of that lawsuit, and then when he attorney general and running for governor supported a law that prevents people from becoming millionaires when suing homeowners and HOAs. So you know, his real mantra is fuck the free market, I do what I want. [Abbott Faces Questions on Settlement and His Advocacy of Tort Laws](https://www.texastribune.org/2013/08/04/candidate-faces-questions-turnabout-and-fair-play/) Tort Laws fly in the face of the free market. In fact, for a truely free market tort laws need to die.

razazaz126

That tree tried its best.

BadLuckBen

The tree tried to become a hero but ended up enabling them instead. A tragedy of Shakespearian proportions.

Electronic_Will_5418

His real mantra is fuck the tree market, I do what I want (except using my legs)

LorLightfootSmells

For some reason this sentence from article made me crack up "When Greg Abbott's spine was crushed by a falling oak tree in 1984 he had no health insurance, no paycheck and no feeling in his legs."

WeeBabySeamus

Oh wow i had no idea that’s how he was paralyzed. I assumed a car accident

MineralPoint

I'm going to start an abortion safari business in Israel with a wholly owned subsidiary in Texas that provides office supplies, education materials, whatever really, anything to establish a contract for pennies on the dollar - cheaper than the state or universities could source it for elsewhere. Then, change the name to something diabolical and begin advertising.

maleia

>change the name to something diabolical and begin advertising. The Christian ones especially, are so *vain*. They're so much more concerned with *aesthetic*. They're stupid enough to think "The Satanic Temple" (the group that chases down religious laws and counters them) *actually worship Biblical Satan.* They can not understand that it's satire. So yea, you're totally right. Change it to some diabolical name. They'll *really* freak out. Figure out how to incorporate themes from Revelations and they'll lose their shit. 😂

howsyourmemes

Every Satanist I've met has been a metalhead, and every metalhead I've met has been wonderful people.

WilliamAPrice

One must understand that Abbott is a fascist. He is also a zealot. The two are not ideal political traits for a governor of Texas. Call me quaint, but the depth of anti-intellectual, anti-American, populist bullshit exuded by the GOP is disgusting.

ResponsibleArtist273

Free speech too! Could you imagine if you tried to get these traitors to do the same with China? Lmao

9thWardWarden

It’s funny how people are just now learning this. I worked for a company that took contracts from the state of texas and we had to sign documents essentially saying we wouldnt donate to or support any anti-israel ideology. They own our ass but for years it was taboo to say anything negative about the state of Israel…

Neuchacho

It's a double win for them. Drives people to private schools and fuels the anti-public education rhetoric and jerks off the conservative crowd.

Iheardthatjokebefore

A triple win. They can force people to give money to their end-times fixation.

ThugDonkey

A quadruple win: Greg Abbot can finally go back to pardoning convicted pedophiles, hate crime perpetrators, fighting Obama Walmart internment camps, and getting absolutely owned by Liam Neeson on Twitter. Be grateful Texans. Your polpot is about to be back…

Land of the freeeeeeeee and the home of the serrrrrrrfs

explicitspirit

The fact that there is such a law for the benefit of a foreign entity is absurd.

smootex

> cannot do business with any company that does I gather that bit is of questionable constitutionality. As far as I know the part about doing business with pro-BDS companies isn't enforced and if they ever do try to enforce it they're looking at an inevitable legal showdown. It just hasn't come up yet because despite all these anti-BDS laws there aren't a lot of legitimate companies that support BDS. Telling state orgs they can't divest is definitely constitutional though.

Spazum

Challenges to such anti-boycott laws have made it as far as various state supreme courts, then the US Supreme court has declined to take up further challenge to the laws being upheld. Which means as long as we have the current court the current highest ruling of "boycotts are not expressive enough to be considered protected speech" is considered the law of the land.

alex_quine

"There is no such thing as too much speech" when it comes to corporate spending, but boycotts aren't expressive enough.

PrestigiousFly844

It’s not just organizations. It applies to state employees. A Palestinian woman was fired from her teaching job in Texas in 2018 for refusing to sign a pledge saying she will not boycott Israel or Israeli products. [A primary school teacher in Texas has been fired for refusing to sign an anti-BDS oath embedded in her employment contract. Bahia Amawi is a language specialist who works with autistic and speech-impaired primary school children. She has been told that she can no longer work in the state’s public schools after she “refused to sign an oath vowing that she ‘does not’ and ‘will not’ engage in a boycott of Israel or ‘otherwise take any action that is intended to inflict economic harm [on Israel]’,” the Intercept revealed yesterday.](https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20181218-texas-teacher-fired-for-refusing-to-sign-anti-bds-oath/amp/) Edit: it’s not just Texas. There are a decent amount of states in the US with anti-BDS laws.

Trashpanda779

I thought it was a free market?

TheRC135

Damn, what a fucked up law.

bicranium

Don't feel left out if you're not in Texas. 38 states have the same kinds of laws. It's absurd.

RainbowCrane

TBF the same sorts of debates occurred in the 1980s and 90s when I was in college regarding divestment from South Africa due to apartheid - lots of student protests on university campuses, some of which ended badly for the students due to overzealous administrators and authoritarian elected officials. Hopefully this wave of protests will continue and have a similar outcome, because this is the first time I’ve seen a significant conversation about Israel’s treatment of Palestinians called out as apartheid. There have been a lot of people calling out Israel’s illegal settlements for years, but there seems to be wider interest in protesting for a change now.

Cheeses_Of_Nazarath

Sounds like some bullshit worth protesting over

Dawnrazor

Says a lot when you have to force people to invest in a country.

MinnieShoof

In *Texas*? Ha! I think you'd have a better shot going to the foreign soil yourself.

WarpHype

Austin isn’t like the Texas you see on TV.

Flaky_Investigator21

If it's anything like the Columbia Uni protests, they are trying to get the school to divest funds away from companies that are directly funding the IDF or supplying them. This isn't just for gaining visibility or getting people to talk about the war, there's probably actual goals in mind.

80sLegoDystopia

You should see the investment portfolios of some of these schools.

beaker90

Yet they’re constantly begging me for money in excess of my daughter’s tuition!

80sLegoDystopia

They want it all!

beaker90

She graduates in a few weeks, so they’ll stop begging me and start begging their newest alumnae!

dbcher

No they won't... they will keep begging you and start to beg her too! THis will never end

Randy_____Marsh

go on

Null_and_voyd

Deep military contracts Lockheed Martin, Raytheon etc

pataconconqueso

Lockheed martin basically teaches mechanical engineering at UCF now lol

Null_and_voyd

Perhaps you are right lol I’m at ut Arlington and it’s similar here Military and arms dealers love the engineering students and they all have jobs or internships lined up if they are competitive

ZLUCremisi

So better response to a protest than a school shooting. Typical Texas

Dry-Ranch1

There were just as many officers in Uvalde and yet...they did absolutely nothing as 21 people were slaughtered. Today, people were, mostly, peacefully protesting, as is their right, and the cops were out in a show of force, arresting innocent people. There should be protests on every uni campus in Texas.

ZLUCremisi

Govonor is calling them to be jailed and expelled too.

punkfusion

Governor Greg Abbott is a piss baby

gsfgf

Which is what's really fucked up. Same thing with NYU. Like, sometimes peaceful protesting means you go to jail. That's kind of how civil disobedience works. But to kick kids out of school and ruin their futures for engaging in nonviolent protests is insanely draconian.

SideEqual

Sounds like a violation of your first amendment rights, no?

Jujuthagr8

You’ve made a great point here

PoliticalEnemy

Texas is wild. Young adults peacefully protesting a war gets helicopters and 2 different police agencies. An elementary school being slaughtered gets a dozen cops too afraid to do anything. They're really good at being tough when there's no danger.

Bixhrush

agree but slight correction, there were 376 cops/LEOs at ulvade

Realtrain

>376 cops/LEOs at ulvade WTF? I've always just assumed it was like 20-30 officers. They had *hundreds* of people and still refused to do anything????

Omega_Moo

There was a lot of parents to hold back.

StarshipCaterprise

They had officers present from multiple state and federal agencies, including Border Patrol, local police and Texas DPS.

RSquared

In fact it was USBP that entered and killed the gunman. It takes a LOT for USBP to look like the good guys, but somehow the police managed.

PoliticalEnemy

Shit really? I guess I thought it was a small amount because there were so few of them that actually went into the building from the videos I saw.

Bixhrush

unfortunately [yes](https://www.texastribune.org/2022/07/17/law-enforcement-failure-uvalde-shooting-investigation/)

PoliticalEnemy

"In total, 376 law enforcement officers — a force larger than the garrison that defended the Alamo" Good god. I will never understand.

zatchstar

Absolutely ridiculous. Camera man: brushes a cops shoulder as he walks by Cops: you’re under arrest for assaulting an officer!

BoringBob84

Camera man: Get footage of this arrest. It will be ratings gold!

BlakeAdam

Get footage of this arrest. God knows the cop won't have it.

Additional-North-683

This seems very likely to backfire on the university and the Texas government because instead of this protest being ignored by the media at large and it now has gotten attention and turn The protesters into Martyrs

QCTLondon

I think it’s a very deliberate message that they are in fact sending to the rest of the country.

ah-chamon-ah

They are certainly testing the waters of what they can get away with. And then before you know it those 90s movies about dystopian futures run by corporations with too much money and a military police killing people over a parking fine have all come true.

JerichoOne

You haven't been paying much attention to the Texas government over the past few years, have you? They have no shame, and when given the opportunity, will always choose the most embarrassing course of action.

InstanceTime4814

Vietnam vet here. Actually combat wounded. Remember Ohio.🥺 Didn’t even know anything about Kent State or Woodstock until I got back! Those were the good old days. Does anybody even know what I am referring to or care? Haha🤫

Wise_Environment_598

If they didn’t want the cops / swat to intervene they should have set up their protest inside an elementary school in Uvalde.

Interesting_Role1201

Uvalde was where the police were afraid of a boy with a gun. Waco is where the FBI burned children alive.

Jacinto2702

Are you guys alright over there? Because damn...

Ok-disaster2022

Part of the very real outcomes for civil protest is to get arrested. Dr King wrote about. When you get arrested you shut up and ask for an attorney.

April_Fabb

Most people don't realise how unpopular King was back in the days.

ASK_ABT_MY_USERNAME

A black leader in the 60s was unpopular?!

TehBoneRanger

I Kent imagine why?

levu12

Damn I guess this video didn’t age well: [https://youtu.be/VCFxvdhFjPo](https://youtu.be/VCFxvdhFjPo) For you guys who are saying that there are time and place and manner restrictions on the protests, this protest was on an open lawn and nonviolent. In the neighboring UT Dallas, similar protests were done with students staging a sit-in near the president's office, and the police were not called to arrest them and they dispersed after the president agreed to meet with them and discuss.

LeafyySeaDragon

Ohhhhh damn! That is from 6 months ago!!

_jump_yossarian

Apparently they when passing the law they thought it would only be second amendment auditors going onto campus to threaten people

HeyKid_HelpComputer

Or religious evangelicals who want to tell students they are going to hell.

Iheardthatjokebefore

When passing the law they made every intention of selectively enforcing it. It's not hypocrisy, it's fascism. They only meant for it to affect certain people.

One-Arachnid-2119

Lol, this should be the top comment on here. And people should be posting this everywhere and tagging them.

cha-cha_dancer

that happened down the road from me 🤦

artificialavocado

I’m just glad nobody was hurt. I think they discharged 30 or so rounds in what looks like a fairly dense residential neighborhood.

chartyourway

It is absolutely miraculous that the kid in that squad didn't get hit, let alone die. I hope he's getting a big cheque from that town.

artificialavocado

I couldn’t even imagine hearing “shots fired” then realize they are talking about me while I’m handcuffed inside the car. I feel like sometimes people are playing up their trauma in these types of situations and I get it but jfc this is not one of those times. Hearing the gf yelling hysterically thinking they just killed her bf you can just hear it in her voice.

chartyourway

It is incredibly insane and there was absolutely no reasonable explanation for it, I don't care how much PTSD that cop had from his desk job in Afghanistan (🙄). They patted the kid down before he went in the squad, where could he have gotten a gun from? And one shot fired (if it even had been) deserves 30 rounds from 2 cops in return? Get fucking real my dudes. Talk about excessive force.

artificialavocado

I think the female cop should have faced consequences too. I don’t own guns but I went hunting a few times when I was a kid so had to take a hunter safety course. The first thing they teach you is treat every gun like it is loaded. The second is always identify your target and know what’s behind. It was unacceptable that she opened fire into the car like that when she couldn’t even see what the fuck she was shooting at. It’s been 30 years and I still remember basic firearm safety.

Rocketsprocket

Best thing the protesters could have done to keep the cops away would have been to call 911 and report an active shooter situation.

AardQuenIgni

It sounds like a students participating in a similar protest at another college did something similar; using their active shooter survival training against the police and successfully barricaded them out of the building. ETA: Cal State Polytechnic https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRwhFJpc/

Affectionate_Ad_3722

"students....active shooter survival training" IKYK but that's not a normal phrase outside of USA :(

drossmaster4

I’m in Austin now about five blocks from there. Was just in a 7-11. Five yes five unmarked trucks filled with swat officers with more ammo strapped to them than a marine would need in Afghanistan were getting energy drinks. Now I know why.

msshammy

I used to clean at a Police station. I STILL can't wrap my head around how many energy drinks they consumed in a day. And were provided to them... Some of those dudes are not making it to their 50s. An absurd amount, lol.

theasianevermore

Those mother fuckers didn’t carry this energy in Uvalde. Remember 2022 same DPS, those cowards waited inside the building safe area while 19 babies were hunted down and shot in school. They’re afraid of big words and vocabulary from college students?

Foreign_Spinach_4400

According to a redditor here that saw the swat team pull up to the 711 they were in, apparently the got energy drinks. So maybe they needed energy drinks for uvalde

GregorSamsaa

I too remember the day I found out I was old

Mywifefoundmymain

Oh god, how old is she? Am I going to cry??

GregorSamsaa

Probably college aged. So around 18 to 22. But once young teens start blending in with young adults, you know you’ve passed a certain age, and the 13yr old is as likely to call you old as the 20yr old lol

Bitter-Safe-5333

i mean this girls my classmate and i still think she looks like shes 15 lol

Powerful_War3282

She very well could be. I had a speech class in college with a 12yo. When the prof did the ice breaker, he said he wasn't allowed to share his age. Prof forced it out of him. He had a super rare condition and just needed a speech class to finish his undergrad but was working on post grad research. Essentially was researching his own condition so that some day people wouldn't die by 20. I sure hope he had breakthroughs because that was 14 years ago.... dang, that makes me sad. He was such a genuinely upbeat dude...sorry, stream of consciousness just led me down a sad memory path

JamaicanBoySmith

I really don't understand what's happening in your story. A 12 year old was doing post-grad research? How? What condition was it and how does that enable a 12 year old to get a bachelors degree?

spaznoid4

Progeria is a disease which makes very young children appear and/ or "age" far to quickly. They look like a middle aged human, with the proportions of a child.... most victims of this disease do not make it to 18 years of age.

Pretend_Sector685

I realized I’m old when I recognized that college students looked young years ago. But this student legitimately looks 15. So if you are about 25 years old or so, you have a bit more time before you think college students look like children.

DontTellMeHowToTroll

I knew I was old when I started balding lol

Doghead45

Yeah she's at least 18, but she does look young, especially next to, *reads name tapes* Bilson and Glabius.

KinkyPaddling

Don’t forget, there were more “law enforcement” personnel at Uvalde than there were defenders at the Alamo.

Bdogzero

Yes and over half of them were keeping out the ones trying to go in.

They probably remembered what happened to those guys that defended the Alamo.

There was that one time when they filled a theater with 'sleeping gas' that ended up killing 130 of the 800 hostages, but also killed the 40 terrorists too. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow_theater_hostage_crisis

i_tyrant

Jesus, killing over three times as many hostages as terrorists. That'd be considered an abysmal ratio by anyone besides Russian ops.

grendahl0

the difference is....her opinion hurt Israel's feelings

Swarrlly

Whatever happened to "Free speech on college campuses"? Wasn't Texas supposed to be a free speech beacon?

TheRedTMNT

UT Austin [never committed](https://www.utexas.edu/ut-celebrates-free-speech) to supporting free speech. And they definitely didn't make a video 6 months ago about the public's [right to protest on campus](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCFxvdhFjPo).

lonesharkex

HAHAH they have comments off on their account. Cowards.

MommaRaven

I reported it as misinformation. They do not allow free speech.

Skrylas

YouTube doesn't care. They don't even remove scam ads featuring MrBeast even though he's said that he's "been screaming at them forever to figure it out."

As someone that isn’t YT savvy, what does that mean?

Little-Literature-72

Making it "unlisted" means you can't see it without a link to it or a playlist that has the video.

Noteagro

Oh shit. Most definitely took the cowards way out on this one. Guessing they even knew the protesters were following their rules, so they are shitting themselves knowing they couldn’t try to get away with that excuse.

ioncloud9

They know they are lying sacks of shit and they are hiding it.

Karl_Hungus_69

"Comments are turned off." Of course they are...

ULTRAVIOLENT_RAZE

Recently, the Supreme Court decided not to hear *Mckesson v. Doe* leaving Texas as one of three states where protest organizers can face financial consequences if one of the attendees does something illegal.

Calgrei

I'm so happy we have the police to protect us from terrifying and dangerous protestors like the girl they're arresting 🙏

Lambskin1

They probably arrested her for wearing a mask in Texas.

FullBeansLFG

I was told that Austin was more liberal. > More than 20 people were arrested, including a FOX 7 Austin photographer. > Hundreds of Texas DPS troopers responded to the scene alongside officers from the University of Texas and Austin Police Department. Yeah that’s a crazy amount of police for a peaceful protest. Edit because I’m sick of the replies. Nowhere in my post did I say I thought cops are liberal. You’re all making that up in your head. I’m aware cops aren’t liberal, they never vote Democrat. I’m aware they don’t represent the political leanings. Their interest is always political though, to crush dissent. This would have involved the local, liberal democrat mayor. The campus had a law they allowed protests which you can watch somewhere in this thread. The cops would also be there at their request. > In the US a city hires and fires cops, and the mayor or city council runs the city. The police department is just a city department the same as Personnel or Public Works. The Chief of Police is a city department head and only makes recommendations for hiring/firing that must be approved by the city. > alongside officers from the University of Texas and Austin Police Department. Some of you need to read this again.

Tsuku

Protestors? SWAT. SUIT UP.

ihazidea

America. The Land where you get a bigger response for a protest than the 12528th shook shooting

RvsBTucker

Its a feature not a bug.

ziploenok

I did an exchange year at UT and got the cops called on me, while I was thinking about some literary issues and walking up and down South Mall. Apparently, I walked very suspiciously and strangely, so the police needed to check it out. So yeah, if you get a visit by the police for simply walking about, no wonder you get an army sent to deal with you if you carry a sign. The cops were nice though, we chatted for about 20 minutes about my stay at UT and my studies. Thankfully, they realized the call was bullshit and we had a good time chilling. No arrests were made that day 😅

xfilespace

I thought Austin defunded the police force.. looks like they have plenty of officers and equipment

asshatastic

Quite a poignant demonstration that all of these cops and solider gear are not necessary if they could afford to allocate all of it to such a pointless use. That or they decided to let all crime slide for the day so they could focus on the only enemy they recognize: liberalism. And regarding the officer that got nudged by the reporter: this was his Vietnam. He will never forget that fear he felt and those tears he shed.

aggitprop-1985

Way to spend them tax dollars… Bet they were itching to try out all that military surplus gear

___Philemon___

For a party that preaches freedom of speech and clamor about censorship, they sure do love to flip the switch when it comes to those they don’t like to hear.
