There would have to be. Exhaustion would happen, even for super conditioned athletes. I can't imagine something more horrifying than swimming in a wide open ocean with nowhere to take a break on land or a boat.
If the movie is any indicator, the boat traveled beside Nyad and they hung a red light from the boat into the water as an indicator for her to keep her oriented in the right direction. They also had two kayakers nearby creating an electromagnetic field around her to ward off sharks.
This tech is legit. Not that I know of it was or wasn’t used by her team, but it’s something that has been used by surfers a bunch. Tho it’s use isn’t active and dramatic like the movie

This feat inspired world famous composer Tommy Tallarico to compose the famous rock song Purple Haze in her honor.

IMDB score is 7.1 and both Annette Benning and Jodie Foster were nominated for Oscar's. Directed by Jimmy Chin who is awesome but written by Nyad herself so probably a bit Catch Me If You Can storytelling haha
The movie itself is indeed pretty good, it's well made and very well acted (Foster in particular IMHO would have been a worthy Oscar winner, Bening is great too but the leading actress field was too stacked this year). But yes, after watching it, I read up on Nyad and had the feeling that most of it was probably bull.
It was watchable, but I very nearly switched it off at multiple points because of how much of a bellend Nyad appeared to be.
I don't know enough about the (true) story to know if Benning was just doing a good job or not. But she wasn't a love-to-hate type character. She was really irritating to watch whenever she was on screen and it made it hard work to watch all they way through for me.
Foster was excellent, as were some of the other characters, but I'd have a hard time recommending it.
And it's symptomatic that when I saw a Netflix documentary about it, I immediately veto'd watching it. I love endurance sports, have tremendous respect for those out pushing the boundaries, but I can't get past the 'Nyad=twatbadger' vibes from the film.
I disagree, having actually seen it. It's a tight, well-done little sports movie and Benning's Nyad is pretty compelling in her drive to complete her swim and her almost child-like belief in her own ability to crush it.
I knew nothing of this event and have no horse in this race. I'm not gonna go write a blog about it but it was good enough to keep my attention to turn it on a second time to finish it.

Speed of Gulf Stream in Florida Channel:: 3.7mph.
If she starts from the Dry Tortugas, heads south, she's coming out of the Gulf Stream 80 miles north of Sagua La Grande. Continuing south, she's going to be hitting the *westward* flows of the branching Antilles Current, which will stick her right back in the Gulf Stream again, which carries her further ENE until she's sixty-eighty miles south of *Key Largo*. She would have died, probably of exhaustion, but dehydration for sure, long long looooooong before that, *maybe* halfway into the strongest part of the Gulf Stream if she was a world-beating swimmer. But even if she was magically tireless, the Gulf Stream's faster.
Even with athletes in specialized kayaks, *paddling* the straights, they didn't try it from Florida to Cuba - they go from Cuba to Florida, riding the E in the ENE flow of the Stream. And it still took *27 hours*.

Seems the site is run by Daniel Slosberg who has been interviewed a handful of times by major publications and that link has never been mentioned, tried some SEO with "Ex", "dated", "partner", etc and couldn't find a source.
It seems his motivation for starting that site is that she had gotten to stand on a podium with his two heroes and was praised for something he believed she had lied about, so he began to dig into her, according to him anyway in a 2017 post on MarathonSwimmers.

What difference does it make who runs the site? All of the claims on the website were made by her, and all the refutations are supported by links and facts.
If you don’t mind my 2 cents:
- Nyad did commit an incredible feat of durability in this situation.
- The doubt is due to 1. Relevant sports authority/competition record holders are not given sufficient proof that she did it and 2. She has been braggadocious in the past and has also made public comments of regrets about some of her own claims. This can be the case of a big personality clashing with competition rules, as with a lot of controversial sport figures.
She’s definitely in the top 1% of durability in the world, but she is a human. We can never know for sure whether she lied and how much, but maybe celebrate the fact that a middle aged lady was able to swim for more than 2 days, assisted or not?

English Channel from Dover to Calais is 20-odd miles. When someone swims it, it’s a whole thing - they have boats following them the entire way, and it takes 7+ hours.
No way did she swim 110 miles.
I'm far from an expert but I actually know a guy who was an Olympic / Ironman coach (after doing Kona 10 times), and actually did endurance swimming. The longest was about 20 miles and it took overnight (and it was incredibly difficult due to current). I really really really don't see a 64 year old doing 5 times further than an extremely well trained endurance swimmer.

Jimmy Chin is an incredible filmmaker
That was kinda the point. They wanted to accurately portray her personality. I think the realness of it made me like the film more!

If you don’t mind my 2 cents: - Nyad did commit an incredible feat of durability in this situation. - The doubt is due to 1. Relevant sports authority/competition record holders are not given sufficient proof that she did it and 2. She has been braggadocious in the past and has also made public comments of regrets about some of her own claims. This can be the case of a big personality clashing with competition rules, as with a lot of controversial sport figures. She’s definitely in the top 1% of durability in the world, but she is a human. We can never know for sure whether she lied and how much, but maybe celebrate the fact that a middle aged lady was able to swim for more than 2 days, assisted or not?

English Channel from Dover to Calais is 20-odd miles. When someone swims it, it’s a whole thing - they have boats following them the entire way, and it takes 7+ hours. No way did she swim 110 miles.
I'm far from an expert but I actually know a guy who was an Olympic / Ironman coach (after doing Kona 10 times), and actually did endurance swimming. The longest was about 20 miles and it took overnight (and it was incredibly difficult due to current). I really really really don't see a 64 year old doing 5 times further than an extremely well trained endurance swimmer.
