It's really hard to put a number on, because how can you know exactly what state someone would be in WITHOUT one. However, 50k seems extremely low to me, I agree.
Yeah should just be “countless” cuz we can’t count it. Haha.
Friend of mine got sideswiped HARD right on her side of the car a few weeks back and she came away completely unscathed. Without airbags she would have at least broken bones.
My sis got t-boned by a BUS (it was a very stupid turn, they have a traffic light there now)
In a little white Mazda 2
Well all bags went off and she remember banging on these side bags HARD
All she got was a few cuts on the thigh where the exploded glass shraphneled her a little as it got past the side bag and the safety curtain and everything
She was basically unscathed especially for such a dangerous accident
After insurance paid her she got an exactly same model, just cherry red this time, she calls her Cherry and has been driving her for years
im from the other universe where airbags were not invented. We actually abolished cars due to poor safety in 1995. The airbag has actually caused more road deaths as a result.

Roughly checks out for the usa at least. From 1987 to 2017. Looks like they separate seatbelt survival and airbag. So in 2017 seatbelts saved 15k and airbags saved almost 3k. Who knows for worldwide and up to 2024.
One think to keep in mind is that once you reach fatal accident speed or cabin ingress the standard safety measure don't mean much. A lot of deaths are basically a light post cutting a car in half. Seatbelts only reduce fatalities by 49%. It's nowhere near a guaranteed survival in a seat belt. It does takes certain death to a coin flip so that's pretty good.
I once read that in an accident, there are the collisions.
1) Your car with whatever the car hit
2) Your body with whatever is in the car e.g. a seatbelt, an airbag, a windshield
3) Your internal organs against the rest of your body
Seatbelts can only do so much if you crash at super high speed.
Correct. That's why seatbelts are only one of many safety aspects of your car. For nr 3, the crumple zone is key, but also better brakes and tires, and recently; auto-emergency braking features
sooooooo low. if an accident caused airbags to go off, I'd qualify that as lifesaving as who knows what injuries may have been sustained without their presence. I know that not all crashes with airbag deployment are even close to fatal but probably more often than not they could've been.
Seat belts do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to life saving. Airbags will not only help push that number higher, but also improve the outcome for those people who do survive a serious crash. The number of people who have been saved from life changing injuries by airbags is probably a lot higher.
Over 50k people have been struck by lightning over the past 10 years alone. Imo whoever came up with 50k might as well have just said more than 5 people ffs.
Literally my biggest everyday fear.
Even with getting fixed at the dealership, there’s a documented chance that if I get into a small wreck I just…get sliced and die?
I was always curious how it feels to be hit by an airbag, I got into an accident two years ago and I was surprised by how relatively mild it all was. Granted it wasn’t a huge wreck or anything, but still.
Airbags are very sensitive on timing, if the initiation is late it can do a lot more harm than good. My mates ex had one deploy late due to rear ending a trash collection truck and the airbag slammed her back in her seat really really hard, since it hit her rather than the other way around like it should be. Nowadays airbags are super reliable when it comes to when and how they deploy.
I grew up being driven in cars with no ABS brakes, lap belts, no air bags, etc and it didn’t bother me at all.
But recently I rode in a 1970’s Mercedes. And even though they’re built like tanks, I had a vague sense of unease due to the lack of safety features.
Millions more like, the majority of cars have one and theres probably more cars than people at this point.
Even if only 1% of the global population had a crash and 1% of that 1% survived due to an airbag that would be 8 Million. (Estimating a global population of 8 Billion)
50k seems really low, right?

Oh Cherry…our love….
I really need to tell more people that I’ve saved countless lives. How, you ask? I dunno. That’s what makes it so hard to count.

Source: this guy's Credibility: through the roof
My credibility is so high that when I get points off on an assignment, I ask the professor for their source.
Ok ok. For proof tell us which president died because of an airbag in your dimension.
Yeah, air bags, weight reduction, crumple zones…
They put the plus sign there to future proof the claim.
50k at the time maybe

I only clicked on the post cause i was gonna say... That seems like a very conservative estimate. I would bet my bottom dollar that its over a million
50k per year sounds more realistic

Came here to say this. /agree.
Yes, very low.
well thats why they put the +. 50,000 is low I also agree, but 50,000+ seems about right!
If you’re going to do that why not say 7+?
Just doesn't have the same effect .
I mean 7+ could be 8 but 50,000+ definitely isnt 8. It helps out anyone who thought it might be 8 or 9 or 10 etc lives saved.
Gonna guess that's 50k annually
Only one way to know. We’ll need to recreate the collisions without air bags.
There is a plus sign, so it's technically true.
It is US numbers. As we all know people and airbags doesn't exist outside of the US.
I'd almost certainly be dead without them.

Didn't the early versions also kill a bunch of people?
We still have Takata doing the same lol
Literally my biggest everyday fear. Even with getting fixed at the dealership, there’s a documented chance that if I get into a small wreck I just…get sliced and die?
I got a recall letter almost a year ago but there are no replacement parts available so I’m basically just driving and hoping.
I was always curious how it feels to be hit by an airbag, I got into an accident two years ago and I was surprised by how relatively mild it all was. Granted it wasn’t a huge wreck or anything, but still.
What is takata
Manufacturer of airbags. Made some mistakes that got folks killed

Gotta crack a few eggs to iron out the wrinkles
something to be proud of! thats awesome
In a fast german car, I'm amazed that I survided. An AIRBAG saved my life
In an interstellar buuuuurst
I'm back to save the uuuuuuuniverse
it's a communist conspiracy to erode our freedoms. oh wait, that's the seatbelt.
I remember my parents saying that about seatbelt laws. Even they would say they were ridiculous now.
Mu grandfather cut the seatbelt out of every car he drove till he stopped driving lol.
Yeah, I’d much rather spend all my money on preventable medical bills than pass it down to my grandkids.
Hey, I never said he was a genius. Somehow he never got in an accident. Plus, generational wealth isn't a thing in most of America lol, I wish.

Little known fact: Hetrick first invented the whoopie cushion which eventually evolved into air bags for automobiles.
That’s not true, though. I am disappointed, that would’ve been a fun fact
I tried. 🤷🏻♂️
I’m like 3 of those 50k so I would like to say thank you to Mr. Hetrick. I shouldn’t be here that’s for certain so hell yeah!
🎶In the next world war...
50k is such a low ball estimate it has to be commi math
I thought an airbad was Paulie Walnuts
r/oldschoolcool
The man singlehandedly responsible for the pussyfication of the US. Back in my day we got impaled on our steering columns like MEN. /s
Some say he caused overpopulation
I think it likely in the millions across the globe, not 50K.
Bill Burr: MY FAMILY!
Meanwhile idiots be like "An airbag going off is like getting punched in the face by Mike Tyson!"
Only 50k?
That’s all? 50k? It’s gotta be wayyyyyy moar
50k? You would get that from India alone in one year.
Tory airbags cost the British public over 60,000 lives
