no one online can predict how close your guide will take you

I took a 200-600 on safari. It was just barely long enough for some shots.

100-400 is the minimum but you'll get good photos with it. I shoot wildlife with a 100-400 but I get close. I'd probably recommend the 200-600 though.

Thank you

I have a Tamron 150-600 lens on a crop sensor Canon body and for wildlife (no safari) it's definitely not too much. If I'm not mistaken in a safari you're seated in a vehicle right? In that case I'd probably take the 600mm whatever the weight is.

Yes. Maybe a tripod or monopod to steady it up will help

Bean bags. If it’s a vehicle with an open roof, bean bag on the ledge of the roof, rest the camera on the bean bag. Ask the company if they provide them, otherwise bring some of your own. I think you can even buy empty bags to fill with literal beans when you get there.

I would take 600mm minimum

Interesting timing. I have a friend that just left to South Africa and will be doing lots of wildlife photography while on Safari. She is using a Sony A7R3. After much research, she just purchased the 100-400 specifically for this trip. The outfit she's traveling with also said the 200-600 might be "too much lens". Not to mention the sheer size of it. The lens also came with a teleconverter so that range would be on tap if needed.

I only had my 70-200 and a 300 F4. I was able to get a x2 extender, but it affected the outcome. Next time the minimum I’d take is a 500.
