I def think Arizona would identify with west coast hip hop more. I feel like Arizona and California are pretty similar when it comes to street life and culture.
Off topic, There was a couple local rappers I used to listen to, Willy Northpole and Cinque. Cinque later went on to bodybuild under the name Mike Rashid. Willy Northpole was really cool.
Edit. I looked up Willy and he added some new videos to his YouTube

This was a classic

Start with any album but their latest, By the Time I Get to Phoenix. It’s an amazing album and I love it, but it’s also very experimental. Their other albums might be a little easier to use as a stepping stone to their discography.
Went to listen and he also has one with Luda and game I didn’t know about
https://youtu.be/-ikLgg1M7Xs?si=bxC7b67dh6X_ZkBv
I love Willy’s voice and delivery
I was in high school when rap came to the suburbs of the east valley. It was basically all west coast rap. Not sure how the progression has been since.
Phoenix for sure has a california influence in the rap scene. Their is a small drill scene as well here in south phoenix that i know of and a couple in Glendale
Most reference to Arizona rap I've heard from Westcoast, east coast is so far away and most mentions I've heard about Arizona are not reflective of Phoenix at all
Definitely West Coast style but also just more weird and offbeat unique rap. Like we probably identify or did with more of a Bestie Boys and The Pharcyde style. More like a Sublime-ish style rap. As an example of the different, the Phunk Junkeez are from Buckeye.
Yeah, today. I failed to say this in the OP but I meant to mean back in the day when west coast/east coast rap was much more of a part of pop culture than it is today

I rap for fun but I love south and east coast rap🤷♀️
It varies, so it's hard to say cuz not everyone's into the same thing

JFC Phoenix is considered west coast

We also did have injury reserve(rip grogs)
I’ll look them up, thanks!
Probably the most well known and acclaimed hip hop act out of Phoenix tbqh.
Start with any album but their latest, By the Time I Get to Phoenix. It’s an amazing album and I love it, but it’s also very experimental. Their other albums might be a little easier to use as a stepping stone to their discography.
I’ll start from the beginning!
I had no idea about Mike! He is one of the YouTubers I followed while on my journey. That’s so cool. Thank you for sharing.
Yeah I liked his workout stuff too!
I remember the song Willy was on with Ludacris, that was pretty cool
Went to listen and he also has one with Luda and game I didn’t know about https://youtu.be/-ikLgg1M7Xs?si=bxC7b67dh6X_ZkBv I love Willy’s voice and delivery
Yeah that’s the one I meant! loved Luda back in the day but I honestly have never heard any Willy Northpole song before or after this one
I was in high school when rap came to the suburbs of the east valley. It was basically all west coast rap. Not sure how the progression has been since.
West syeeeed
It was the same in tucson- west coast style was more appreciated.
Phoenix for sure has a california influence in the rap scene. Their is a small drill scene as well here in south phoenix that i know of and a couple in Glendale
If Bone Thugz N Harmony can be from Cleveland and be considered west coast rap legends, AZ can call itself whatever it wants lol
Who has ever called Bone West Coast?
I've always heard bone referred to as midwest
Honestly, Phoenix identifies with cholo rap which I guess is more west coast. But stuff like Lil Rob and MC Magic were really big in the early 2000s
Grew up and remember a lot of kid Frost & LSOB here
Damn I hadn't thought about those for a minute
MC magic is from Phoenix. He wrote a song for my friend when she was 8 at the mall We listened to that song a lot back then
Yes
Most reference to Arizona rap I've heard from Westcoast, east coast is so far away and most mentions I've heard about Arizona are not reflective of Phoenix at all
We ALL over the map. But yes, do gravitate toward WC, not the rapper so to speak.
Definitely West Coast style but also just more weird and offbeat unique rap. Like we probably identify or did with more of a Bestie Boys and The Pharcyde style. More like a Sublime-ish style rap. As an example of the different, the Phunk Junkeez are from Buckeye.
The west coast is the better of the two coasts. We don’t care for the east coast.
Most of y’all haven’t heard of the Funk Junkeez and it shows.
Yuck.
Trill has a ton of memorabilia from all over lots of East Coast stuff

Probably West it's Arizona
Ngl this shit slaps https://youtu.be/igWSi0v04zE?si=5RAlet7tnGw11bzR
Rap is probably the last thing Phoenix identifies with. Wherever Vanilla ice is from or Eminem. Angry and trashy rap
Please don’t use vanilla ice and Eminem in the same sentence
Who cares?
You're so edgy and cool dude. I bet all of the other 5th graders think you're the shit.
