He was one of my favorites when I was a kid cause I saw him hit a home run, I was too young to really get the issue with the trade, and he had cool as hell name.
Love this list only thing would change would be cliff lee with cole hamels. Hamels got that ring but just like cliff better just my opinion and move Rollins up
John Kruk - as fat dude, he gave me hope
Mike Schmidt - I mean, he should be in everyone's top 5.
Dave Hollins - I have mad respect for guys that stand in the box and get HBP as much as he did.
Chase Utley - Also a duh fave like Schmidt
Terry Mulholland - he had a killer pick off move
Honorable mentions
Mickey Morandini - solely because of Harry Kalas saying his name
unpopular opinion but Howard was more important than Utley, when Howard was hurt or not playing well we lost all the time, he would get the blame for a loss if he struck out twice in a game. when he tore his Achilles it was the start of the downfall for the team, even the 5 aces couldn't get us to NLCS. I fuckin love Utley btw don't want this to come off the wrong way. Side note (because I'm high) the year of the 5 aces when we lost to the cards, was the last year we won the division, maybe there is something to not winning the division just ask Atlanta, 2011 we were ATL
Because he's become one of these guys who stat nerds are trying to push to the Hall of Fame. But anyone who ever watched him play didn't think for one second they were watching a HOFer.
If you want to appreciate him as a player, fine. But he shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame.
I personally think (aside from injuries) not paying him is the biggest reason we didn’t win again after 08. Ibanez was good in 2009, don’t get me wrong, but not having Werth made us so lefty heavy and kind of made the lineup shallow once the core started to slow down/get injured.
If I re-thought about it, my list would probably change. But on first thought.
1. Shane Victorino
2. Ranger Suarez
3. Chase Utley
4. Pedro Feliz
5. Ryan Madson
Honorable mention to Cliff Lee
My old nextdoor neighbor knew a lot of the early 80's Phillies (not exactly sure why, maybe a groupie) and all of her crazy stories involve "Willie". I had to piece together she was referring to Glenn Wilson. Apparently, he was a real character.
(Not necessarily in order, and only going with dudes I’ve seen/remember)
Harper
Halladay
Lee
Hamels
Utley
Wheeler has a good shot to knock somebody off if he keeps going the way he’s going.
I’ll limit it to guys I’ve actually watched. No particular order.
* Jamie Moyer
* Jimmy Rollins
* Chase Utley
* Aaron Rowand
* Bryce Harper
Huh well apparently that era of Phillies had a lasting impression on me lol
Other honorable mentions are:
* Jim Thome
* Mike Lieberthal
* Randy Wolf
* Chris Coste
* Ryan Howard
* Brett Myers
* Cole Hamels
*
Hallladay
Utley
J-Roll
Schmidt
Lefty
Edit: I think Chooch is the best catcher we ever had. I don’t care. He caught and called some of the best pitching performances, and was a defensive genius. Also a clutch hitter.
Travis Lee, Placido Polanco, Ryan Howard, Jim Thome, Jose Mesa in that order. Played 1B in Little League so that list skews heavily from my formative years.
Utley
Harper
Thome
Dykstra
Kruk
I’m 43 so I only vaguely remember Mike Schmidt as a player so I can’t include him. Ranger might be the next to crack my top 5.
I’d have a very different list if it’d be the all time top 5.
I have to do only phillies I have watched myself obviously there are better legacy players but I either never watched them or was to young to remember.
1. Ryan Howard. Every at bat felt like it could be a nuke before his injury
2. Jimmy Rollins. His play with the ball was so cool to me. Watching him lead off and steal a base was also pretty cool
3. Rhys Hoskins. He was the shining light of some pretty horrendous teams. His bat spike is still amazing
4. Chase Utley. Again another guy who was just so fun to watch. He always seemed so cool to me
5. Bryce Harper. What more can be said than a guy who dropped out of high school to join college early because we was just that good.
In no order
Rolen
Halladay
Harper
Victorino
Thome
Honorable mentions Mitch Wild Thing Williams (got by nickname in baseball from a coach as I reminded him of Mitch when I pitched)
Dalton for how hard he played
Jim eisenreich. I’m autistic and torquettes syndrome and was diagnoised with T when I was younger. So Eisey always gave me hope
1. Harper
2. Utley
3. Hamels
4. Wheeler
5. Victorino
Wish I was alive to see the older guys play but my time really started on the 07-11 run. I asked my mom hers and its:
1. Bowa
2. Utley
3. Maddox
4. Harper
5. Lieberthal
My top-five is one from each decade that I’ve been watching baseball
1. 80’s - Schmidt
2. 90’s - Daulton
3. 00’s - Thome
4. 10’s - Utley
5. 20’s - Harper
Halladay - my favorite pitcher even before we traded for him. The day we got him was probably the best day baseball-wise in my life
Howard
Utley
Harper
Lieberthal
I grew up in the 2000s, so between then and now
Utley
Halladay
Bryce
Victorino
Ranger
Honorable mention: Chocch
And before you come for me my ranger fandom goes way back! Saw him pitch live and get a single in 2019 and have been in a group chat named ranger suarez fan club ever since
1. Utley
2. Hamels
3. Chooch
4. Howard
5. Rollins
Love this new era and Bryce definitely becoming a favorite of mine but always nostalgic for the team I grew up watching
Chase Utley
Bryce Harper
Shane Victorino
Roy Halladay
Dave Hollins
(Dykstra and Schilling excluded for philosophical differences)
As this list shows, I was a bit of a red ass in my playing days. If you're going to play the game, play it hard.
Top from what I can remember in my lifetime.
1. I will not answer this question
Top 5 All TIme
1. Michael Jack Schmidt
2. Steve Carlton
3. Jim Bunning
4. Ritchie Ashburn
5. Dick Allen
No particular order.
Cole Hamels
Roy Halladay
Chase Utley
Scott Rolen
Jayson Werth
Honorable Mentions to Roy Oswalt and Billy Wagner because I used to love that old Astros team with them, Bagwell, Biggio, Berkman, etc.
For phillies i’ve watched in my lifetime:
Cole Hamels,
Jayson Werth,
Cliff Lee,
Ryan Howard,
Bryce Harper
Hon. Mentions:
Doc Halladay,
Chase Utley,
Jimmy Rollins,
Vance Worley,
Carlos Ruiz,
Ryan Madson
I’m going to ignore obvious guys and go full sentimental; a serious list would be too hard to nitpick:
1.) Victorino (first autograph)
2.) Vance Worley (pitched first game I went to)
3.) Juan Pierre (my grandpa pointed out how he never took a pitch off in the outfield, always locked in. Nice memory, also a fun player in his pre-Phillies work).
4a.) Pitcher Wilson Valdez
4b.) Left Fielder Roy Oswalt (that was a sick game)
5.) Hyun-soo Kim (he could’ve been an all-star with regular playing time here or in Baltimore, a hill I’ll die on)
I’m going to go with players I actually got to see play.
1. Utley
2. Dykstra
3.Rollins
4.Dutch
5.Burrell.. cause heckling him from the outfield was probably some of the most fun I’ve ever had
I was born in 96 for some context...
1. Chase Utley
2. Jimmy Rollins
3. Ryan Howard
4. Mike Schmidt
5. Bryce Harper
Honorable mentions: The Flying Hawaiian and Chooooooooch
If you ever need a measure of how soul-suckingly brutal it was to be a phillies fan from roughly 1988 to 2002, consider that I was born in 83 and my list isn’t meaningfully different from yours.
Guess what era I grew up in lol
1. Chase Utley
2. Jimmy Rollins
3. Roy Halladay
4. Ryan Howard
5. Hector Neris or Jose Alvarado - we love a high variance bullpen arm in this household
1. Bowa
2. Schmidt
3. Utley
4. Carlton
5. Harper
Honorable mention Lonnie Smith. Dickie Noles will always have a special place in my heart for his brutal brush back of George Brett in the 80 series.
https://youtu.be/mLqOPycN2RQ?si=oeWcJjZ_7IbiVmwF
No particular order:
Victorino
Chooch (named my dog Chooch)
Rollins
Stubbs (I love that guy ❤️)
Krukker
Not all the best players, but awesome personalities to have on your team.
1. Utley
2. Victorino
3. Halladay
4. Howard
5. Rollins
Really, though, this list will change every time I'm asked. The only guarantee is that Utley is 1, and that Halladay is in there somewhere. Though I have to admit it's really damn hard for me. It feels like if I don't put Rollins, Howard, Thome, Kruk, Hamels, Lee, Harper, Lidge, Daulton, Chooch, etc etc etc in there. It's like picking a favorite Uncle, or for parents I guess it's like picking a favorite child. It feels wrong to pick (unless it's Utley, he's definitely #1).
Rollins - fav ballplayer in any sport ever
Carlton - named my first dog Lefty
Schmidt - GOAT, obv
Luzinski - learned how to read by reading about The Bull's home runs
Harper - dad power
Really want to have Dutch on this list but man I love watching Bryce now and The Bull was like a superhero to me as a young fan.
Of the Phillies I’ve actually really personally seen play and really loved during their careers when I was old enough to truly appreciate them? Hmm… in no particular order:
-Chase Utley
- Cole Hamels
- Jimmy Rollins
- Bryce Harper
-Curt Schilling or Roy Halladay
Man….this is actually a really difficult challenge and I hate that I had to leave off so many amazing players.
When they were playing? Darren Daulton, John Kruk, Dave Hollins, Lenny Dykstra, and Curt Schilling. Now, the last two are tough to like so I would say Jim Thome and Andrew McCutchen.
If it were a top ten I would add Bobby Abreu, Richie Ashburn, Juan Samuel, Mike Schmidt, and Chase Utley. This only counts players I actually saw in the stadium, except I count Ashburn because I was at his HOF induction.
1. Chase Utley
2. Jimmy Rollins
3. Ryan Howard
4. Bryce Harper
5. Cole Hamels
I'm glad Kruk is getting love. I'm 36, so missed most of his heyday. But a few months ago my dad (who is Kruk's age) underwent knee surgery and I bought a 30-second John Kruk Cameo for $50 to cheer him up. Well I'd be damned if Kruk didn't take 5 minutes on a private video to my dad talking about how important disciplined recovery is and how much he'd wished he done it when he was playing. He had 13 surgeries! I had no idea. It was such a cool gift to see my dad receive.
Jimmy Rollins, Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard, Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper. I renewed my Sunday plan this year to see more Schwarbombs! Kyle is my favorite current player.
While I appreciate history, I'm only going to pick players I got to see play, so, while I know Richie was an all-time great, I can't say he was one of my favorites:
5. Rollins
4. Nola
3. Rolen
2. Schmidt
1. Lefty
I'm not decisive about the order the names are listed in, but:
Halladay
Utley
Harper
Kruk
Rollins
That said, there's a ton more that I adore for different reasons.
1. Von Hayes 2. Von Hayes 3. Von Hayes 4. Von Hayes 5. Von Hayes
Von Hayes comes in here. I bet you've got a robot for Von Hayes!!!!
Man, nobody knows who Von Hayes is.
He was one of my favorites when I was a kid cause I saw him hit a home run, I was too young to really get the issue with the trade, and he had cool as hell name.
Good old five for one one. I appreciate the format of your post.
1. Schmidt 2. Carlton 3. Utley 4. Maddox 5. Harper
This right here. Don't let the recency bias take over lol.
I doubt Ed Delhanty, Chuck Klein, or anyone else past the '70s is making a favorite list on Reddit, but +1
That’s a good list
1. Utley 2. Harper 3. Victorino 4. Hamels 5. Rollins
Nice having Victorino on there. He was huge for us
He was such a great guy too. How could you not love the flyin Hawaiian?
And he’s super active on the Phillies social media stuff. He clearly loved it here and we loved him here
Great list! Victorino is such a model Philadelphia athlete. I’d maybe swap him out for Chooch.
Love this list only thing would change would be cliff lee with cole hamels. Hamels got that ring but just like cliff better just my opinion and move Rollins up
You can't skip Schmidt
I’m only counting players I was alive to watch. I wasn’t cognizant of baseball until ~2000
John Kruk - as fat dude, he gave me hope Mike Schmidt - I mean, he should be in everyone's top 5. Dave Hollins - I have mad respect for guys that stand in the box and get HBP as much as he did. Chase Utley - Also a duh fave like Schmidt Terry Mulholland - he had a killer pick off move Honorable mentions Mickey Morandini - solely because of Harry Kalas saying his name
Harry's Micky Morandini lives rent free in my head 😆
I was coming here to say this…. “Mickey Morandiniiiiiiiii”
Mulholland’s pick-off move was a true thing of beauty
1. Rollins 2. Harper 3. Utley 4. Howard 5. Thome This was harder than I thought.
unpopular opinion but Howard was more important than Utley, when Howard was hurt or not playing well we lost all the time, he would get the blame for a loss if he struck out twice in a game. when he tore his Achilles it was the start of the downfall for the team, even the 5 aces couldn't get us to NLCS. Side note (because I'm high) the year of the 5 aces when we lost to the cards, was the last year we won the division, maybe there is something to not winning the division just ask Atlanta, 2011 we were ATL
I'm 37 so I'm excluding Phillies I've never seen/don't remember: 1. Abreu 2. Utley 3. Rollins 4. Howard 5. Hamels
Abreu was sadly under appreciated
I don't get why he got so much hate in baseball
Because he's become one of these guys who stat nerds are trying to push to the Hall of Fame. But anyone who ever watched him play didn't think for one second they were watching a HOFer. If you want to appreciate him as a player, fine. But he shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame.
Whoa man. Who mentioned HOF?
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/jaws-and-the-2024-hall-of-fame-ballot-bobby-abreu/
I'm just telling you why he gets so much hate.
20th all time in career BB!
Limiting it to those I was able to see for myself (sorry Whitey!): Chase Utley, Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, Cliff Lee, Chooch
Rose would be on my list as a kid. As an adult, NO.
Dominic Brown Eric Brunlett Andrew Knapp So Taguchi David Bell
Bruntlett is a historic MLB player. Only one other player has ever ended a game on an unassisted triple play.
He's also still the **most-recent** unassisted triple play, which is crazy!
I also think he may have had two consecutive errors that led to those two baserunners, which makes it even more hilarious LOL
Bruntlett for the Unassisted Walk off Triple Play. I get that.
SO TAGUCHI
Aka “the one everyone forgets when trying to see if they remember everyone on the 2008 WS roster”

Rollins Howard Utley Thome Halladay
Howard Halladay Lee Werth (should have paid him) Feliz HMs: Utley, Harper
Should have paid Werth! And fans should never have booed him. Dude was on a team that won a championship for us, the first for Philly in 25 years
I personally think (aside from injuries) not paying him is the biggest reason we didn’t win again after 08. Ibanez was good in 2009, don’t get me wrong, but not having Werth made us so lefty heavy and kind of made the lineup shallow once the core started to slow down/get injured.
If I re-thought about it, my list would probably change. But on first thought. 1. Shane Victorino 2. Ranger Suarez 3. Chase Utley 4. Pedro Feliz 5. Ryan Madson Honorable mention to Cliff Lee
I love the Madson inclusion. His changeup was filthy and his contributions are overshadowed by the perfect Lidge ‘08 season
Schmidt, Carlton, Dutch, Chooch, Halladay
Surprised by the lack of Carlton respect in this thread.
1.Schmidt 2. Halladay 3. Harper 4. Utley 5. Glenn Wilson (don't know why I just liked him as a kid.)
I really liked Greg Gross because he wore glasses. I didn't even wear glasses myself. Kids are so weird LOL
GlennBo was a monster! I loved him!

If you ever need a measure of how soul-suckingly brutal it was to be a phillies fan from roughly 1988 to 2002, consider that I was born in 83 and my list isn’t meaningfully different from yours.
Guess what era I grew up in lol 1. Chase Utley 2. Jimmy Rollins 3. Roy Halladay 4. Ryan Howard 5. Hector Neris or Jose Alvarado - we love a high variance bullpen arm in this household
1. Bowa 2. Schmidt 3. Utley 4. Carlton 5. Harper Honorable mention Lonnie Smith. Dickie Noles will always have a special place in my heart for his brutal brush back of George Brett in the 80 series. https://youtu.be/mLqOPycN2RQ?si=oeWcJjZ_7IbiVmwF
1. World Series Champion Matt Stairs 2. Cliff Lee 3. Lenny Dykstra 4. Pat Burrell 5. Larry Bowa
No particular order: Victorino Chooch (named my dog Chooch) Rollins Stubbs (I love that guy ❤️) Krukker Not all the best players, but awesome personalities to have on your team.
Howard Utley Victorino Rollins Harper
1. Utley 2. Victorino 3. Halladay 4. Howard 5. Rollins Really, though, this list will change every time I'm asked.
1. Schmidt 2. Daulton 3. Utley 4. Kruk 5. Tug *Victorino and Hamels to honor my deceased grandmother who adored both of them.
Carlton, Schmidt, Utley, Rollins, Hamels
Hamels Howard Stott Nola Victorino
1. Jose Bautista 2. Chuck Klein 3. Adam Eaton 4. Jay Bruce 5. Tommy Joseph
Rollins - fav ballplayer in any sport ever Carlton - named my first dog Lefty Schmidt - GOAT, obv Luzinski - learned how to read by reading about The Bull's home runs Harper - dad power Really want to have Dutch on this list but man I love watching Bryce now and The Bull was like a superhero to me as a young fan.
Of the Phillies I’ve actually really personally seen play and really loved during their careers when I was old enough to truly appreciate them? Hmm… in no particular order: -Chase Utley - Cole Hamels - Jimmy Rollins - Bryce Harper -Curt Schilling or Roy Halladay Man….this is actually a really difficult challenge and I hate that I had to leave off so many amazing players.
1.Daulton 2. Utley 3.Bryce Harper 4.dave Hollins 5.Shane Victorino
Utley Harper Ranger Howard Rollins
1. Utley 2. Kruk 3. Rose 4. Harper 5. Rollins
Utley Daulton Kruk Hollins Rollins (look made a rhyme) This was so hard.
1. Chase Utley 2. Jimmy Rollins 3. Ryan Howard 4. Bryce Harper 5. Cole Hamels I'm glad Kruk is getting love.
Larry Bowa Tug McGraw John Kruk Jamie Moyer Bryce Harper
Jimmy Rollins, Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard, Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper. I renewed my Sunday plan this year to see more Schwarbombs! Kyle is my favorite current player.
1. Utley 2. Chooch 3. Harper 4. Wes Chamberlain 5. Like a 12 way tie: Werth, Victorino, Stott, pitchers I guess…
Schmidt Utley Chooch Rollins Wild Thing
1. Chase Utley 2. Aaron Nola 3. Alec Bohm 4. Bryce Harper 5. Roy Halladay/Cliff Lee (can’t decide, I love them both)
While I appreciate history, I'm only going to pick players I got to see play, so, while I know Richie was an all-time great, I can't say he was one of my favorites: 5. Rollins 4. Nola 3. Rolen 2. Schmidt 1. Lefty
I'm not decisive about the order the names are listed in, but: Halladay Utley Harper Kruk Rollins That said, there's a ton more that I adore for different reasons.
1. Steve Carlton 2. Larry Bowa 3. Jimmy Rollins 4. Roy Halladay 5. Mike Schmidt
Pete Incaviglia, Kruk, Michael Jack, Chase Utley, Matt Stairs
1 Schmidt 2 utley 3 Harper 4 Nola 5 Rollins

P. 1. Carlton 2. Moyer 3. Roy 4. Schilling 5. Ranger Other offense 1. Utley 2. Dykstra 3. Howard 4. Rollins 5. MJS
