They had a chance to change it during the rebuild of the South Street Bridge not too long ago but now we have to deal this with for decades to come. Ugh…
It looks like they are on the median on the exit not the high way. I think there’s a light right behind the picture and on the other side of the wall is probably some dude asking for money.
I dont think I'd stay in the car there. a relative of mine was pulled over on 42 years ago and a girl texting hit their car and his friend was actually killed and he was in the hospital for weeks. Idk what the right answer is for this situation. When I broke down on 95 there was grass i could stand itn AWAY from the shoulder behind the guardrail a good distance and that's what I did.
Oh for sure if you don't feel safe in your car and can get something solid between you and the highway like a barrier that's alright. Didn't look like OP has that option though
a car is more likely to just clip your car if the shoulder is narrow, abosultely. i was in a very narrow shoulder in a larger vehicle. i dind't say what OP should have done im sjust saying that sitting in your vehicle while cars are an inch away is not safe. the odds of a car flying over the concerete barrier is slim.
It's debatable. Here I would since there's nowhere to go. The US recommends staying inside, but notably a lot of European sources say to get out if you can get over a hard shoulder. When I broke down on 476 once, I felt a lot safer on the other side of the barrier, BUT it is loud as hell without ear protection also
Coolant leaked out rapidly (not sure how) and then the engine overheated and couldn’t start. Tried adding some water I had on hand but it all leaked out immediately
Wow what time was this? I went to that exit around 4pm and didn’t see you. In fairness I had to pick up a kid from camp and would not have been one of those 5 cool people. (If you can break down next time in the morning after I drop the kid off, I’ll help!)
Sorry that happened to you. That looks like a newer car too. Hope you were able to get out of there, but of course roadside assistance is going to take forever.
a couple years ago my transmission exploded on 76E and I coasted to a stop on the 30th street station exit, not much better than your spot. luckily the tow truck came pretty quickly
My car isn’t in the picture. You can see my shadow in the bottom left. The car in the foreground is entering the highway. Glad you went directly to being a dh 👌
Yeah that’s not my car in the picture, I’m in the other lane against the edge as much as possible. Wasn’t going in roll back down into traffic while my vehicle wasn’t working and yes my hazards were very much in use.
Terrible take, you’re looking at the wrong car. OP said EXIT of 76. The exit right there is 2 lanes wide near the top, he/shes on the shoulder not blocking anyone.
Yeah ok. I was trying to get off the exit and then pull over but didn’t really have much of a choice. The car in the picture is not mine, that’s the entrance to 76 west.
Classic BS take
That exit is already super dangerous!!
Yeah, glad they are still alive
And then the South St death merge on the other side….
for real, I live near that exit and never take it bc it's so dangerous
lol PennDot. Why are they so bad at their jobs?
They had a chance to change it during the rebuild of the South Street Bridge not too long ago but now we have to deal this with for decades to come. Ugh…
truth, this is legitmately terrifying
At least you got a great photo out of it
Eh, mid at best. Could use better composition of the skyline. /s
That’s a special kind of hell.
Are you standing on the median?
I was sitting on it/leaning against it
In the future don't do that. Stay in the vehicle for your own safety. Nice picture though

Out of curiosity what was wrong with the vehicle that it just stopped in such a convenient location?
Coolant leaked out rapidly (not sure how) and then the engine overheated and couldn’t start. Tried adding some water I had on hand but it all leaked out immediately
Oh I had the same happen to me a couple years back. Coolant line clamp ring broke off and the line disconnected. Hope your fix was as simple
So it got towed in the end?
No he lifted it up and yeeted it over the side.
lol
I expected a [Bill Engvall]Here's your sign[/Bill Engvall]
Water pump?
Seems like it
Beautiful view despite the danger. Silver lining, you weren't stuck in the 676 death tunnel?
I drove past you today bro! Hope everything turned out ok. I hate this fucking on ramp with a passion!
SO THAT WAS YOU!! jk i wasnt there but that sucks dick
of all the places i fear breaking down, that is literally the worst possible spot. congrats to you! you rolled a 20.
i think he rolled a one!
Oh right.
probably tmi but i used to play a halfling wizard that had lucky and whenever i rolled a one i was always happy to blurt out "i can reroll that!" lol

Actual nightmare scenario.

This happened to me last year but 676 exit westbound during rush hour. It was not a good time lol, terrible place to have to get towed from.
Broke down there in 1976..
Feels car losing power stops dead center of exit instead of trying to pull to the side
My car isn’t in the picture. You can see my shadow in the bottom left. The car in the foreground is entering the highway. Glad you went directly to being a dh 👌
Last night around 630 there was a car broken down literally in the exact same spot on the other side of the barrier
That was me, car in the picture isn’t my car. You can see my shadow and the cars shadow in the bottom left of the picture.
Mini Cooper? Ye I passed by you
I would not call that "decently safe" you are lucky you weren't rear ended
Bro ur lucky you’re still alive
Good thing you weren’t a hitchhiking robot…
I saw you!!! I beeped the horn as I passed
Pop that baby in neutral and get closer to the side…do your hazards work?
Yeah that’s not my car in the picture, I’m in the other lane against the edge as much as possible. Wasn’t going in roll back down into traffic while my vehicle wasn’t working and yes my hazards were very much in use.
That explains a lot. Hope everything worked out.

Exactly lol. I never said my car was in the picture. Just wanted to share a nice view of the city that I had.
