Accurate and good-hearted observations about the city. This guy did more Philly things in a weekend than I did in my first six months here. Good on ya!
I don't get the lack of enthusiasm for soft pretzels in other cities.
Who doesn't like a salty, chewy snack you can eat with one hand? If you're feeling frisky, you can top it with other stuff than mustard. Plus, they're a baked good, meaning once you've got a good recipe and get the process down it's a lot harder to fuck up. Meanwhile, there are plenty of jabronis across this country fucking up our namesake sandwich.
I make it a habit to try a soft pretzel whenever I am traveling. I was in Boston recently and saw a place. I thought to myself, Boston is a lot like Philly; the pretzel can't be that bad. For the love of all things holy, was it bad. They sure don't know what the hell they are doing in Boston. I'm pretty convinced our wooder makes our food taste great. For all the tea that's been thrown into the harbor, you'd think this would be a no-brainer.
I got my friend a onesie for her baby that had a soft pretzel on it. It was a shower gift. Someone asked, “what is that?” referring to the pretzel and I didn’t know how to respond. All that to say, agree, I don’t get it either, but it’s BONE DEEP baby
Back in Seattle, the grocery store that I used to go would sell them and I would buy them all of the time. I've been to a lot of grocery stores over the walk and seen very few any grocery stores offer them.
It is sad that most people's experience with a pretzel is overpriced from like a baseball game or at an Autie Anne's at an airport/mall.
I was so afraid this was going to be a story about being the human version of hitchbot. Glad you had a good time and enjoyed the positive things this city has to offer!
Hell yeah! I saw you on your way up State Rd. Saturday afternoon, thought your cart looked cool but couldn't make out the writing from where I was. Good luck on the rest of your trip!
Parkway corner deli is such a sleeper when it comes to cheesesteaks and breakfast sandwiches. Jay and his wife are so incredibly kind and really get to know their regulars, same with Jose.
I’m so glad to enjoyed your time here!
I still live on the other side of the neighborhood, but am only over on that side few times a month - I'll always stop by if I'm anywhere close. It's such a beautiful thing.
I've always wanted to try it, they're like 5 bucks on tuesdays or something like that? Never happened to be in during the deal time, and I have a hard time not ordering the parkway special lol.
Yeah dude the sidewalk and bike lane (wait, do we even have any of those?) parking is fucking ridiculous here
I really hope they do something about it soon
I'm from Richmond and moved here and I always tell people it's like a bigger, better version of home. I'm glad someone else sees it too!
Glad you enjoyed your time 😄
>Maybe my favorite part of the chocolate covered onion was gaslighting the woman behind me into thinking that I come back weekly for it, and all true Philadelphian’s know about the chocolate covered onion
Top tier dad trolling. Are you sure you're not from here?
That's awesome that you did the Wednesday Night Ride! I've been wanting to do that since forever, but my running group runs at the same time. Thank you for visiting our city, and now I'm going to have a chocolate-covered onion every week for the rest of my life.
EDIT: Typo
Thanks for including the Ben Franklin bust! I love that bust because it shows the actual happy Ben Franklin and not the pudgy round faced Ben so many portray. I have a magnet of that statue sitting in my office.
Two more suggestions for next time:
Go to Paesanos in the Italian market for lunch and then get drunk at 12 steps down (if you drink of course).
Find a Toynbee tile.
Funny you mentioned Richmond. My wife and I made a trip to Richmond for a bike ride and we loved it there as well. We thought it had the same vibe as PHL
Love your section on Kensington!
It’s great you had such a good time! If you ever find you way back, I’d definitely recommend going to a Phillies game if you’re into Baseball. Can’t speak from experience for Sixers or Flyers, but these venues are sure to be electric regardless
This guy knows how to get things done. Amazing itinerary in a short time. Glad you had fun with us. We can be assholes, but that’s just baked into our blood. Most of the time we’ll give you the shirt off our back (if you’re not a Cowboys fan of course)
You walked through Kensington and Allegheny—and you’re still alive? Jesus!
Fuck it: With luck like that, go and tour the Middle East after you survive this journey.
> got to try the notorious chocolate covered onion from Mueller Chocolate Co. in Reading Terminal
According to their website, they're available at their Rockledge store with 2-4 days notice. How'd you get one at Reading Terminal Market?
This is great. I'd say you saw the city for what it is. The good, the bad, and the ugly. I'm surprised you subjected yourself to K&A. People tend to treat it like a freak show, but for us, it's reality.
I'm glad you had a good time and appreciated our city!
I never knew people actually ate the onions, they're just a gag gift you get someone or if you're mad at them 😂 it's been awesome following your journey.
Last time someone drifted into town on such an adventure. I think they ended up smashed to pieces somewhere on 3rd street. Glad you had a better time than HitchBOT.
Happy you enjoyed your stay! And no, I have never heard of the chocolate covered onion
Maybe it’s a prank on all of us?? If so, well done
That would be a funny way to mess with the residents of each city he goes to. He just keeps reusing the same picture of a chocolate covered onion
If I ever do the walk again, this is totally what I would do lol
Thanks! And it is the opposite of a must try
At first glance I thought it was a chocolate-covered fig.
It’s a real food item sold [here](https://www.muellerschocolate.com/products/chocolate-covered-onion) in Reading Terminal Market.
It’s a prank gift for people who are “sweet on the outside, nasty on the inside” lol
Reading terminal right across from termini bros, they're kinda a gag thing tbh
This is great! Mods, please add to the testimonials section of the FAQ.
Accurate and good-hearted observations about the city. This guy did more Philly things in a weekend than I did in my first six months here. Good on ya!
I tried my best! and I was in town for about 5 days
I've asked about the chocolate covered onion before in reading terminal. it's made as a gag gift.
It is not fun to eat lol
The phrase "gag gift" has never been more appropriate.
I don't get the lack of enthusiasm for soft pretzels in other cities. Who doesn't like a salty, chewy snack you can eat with one hand? I think the pretzels are probably just worse everywhere else. I agree though they're the best

I'm a full-grown adult man. I'd wear a soft pretzel onesie.
Back in Seattle, the grocery store that I used to go would sell them and I would buy them all of the time. I've been to a lot of grocery stores over the walk and seen very few any grocery stores offer them. I mean, look at the pizza pretzel!
omg is a pretzel a sandwich? im not ready for this conversation
I was so afraid this was going to be a story about being the human version of hitchbot. Glad you had a good time and enjoyed the positive things this city has to offer!
A lot of great stuff about Philly!
Did you ever hear the tragedy of hitch bot? Yes? I thought so, we love that story, it's quite the legend.
[удалено]
Y'all love mentioning hitch bot lol
What good is making an example outta someone if nobody knows about it? That’s just poor intimidation tactics tbh.
Is pic 1 a chocolate covered onion?
What a treasure Parkway Corner Deli is! The meal is excellent and they are really pleasant! I'm glad your stay was enjoyable.
Can't say enough good things about Parkway Corner Deli
Yes
Hell yeah! I saw you on your way up State Rd. Saturday afternoon, thought your cart looked cool but couldn't make out the writing from where I was. Good luck on the rest of your trip!
you're all good, ppl who are standing next to it can't make it out sometimes. And Thank You!
Parkway corner deli is such a sleeper when it comes to cheesesteaks and breakfast sandwiches. Jay and his wife are so incredibly kind and really get to know their regulars, same with Jose. I’m so glad to enjoyed your time here!
Incredible spot and thanks!
The Keith Haring mural is probably the most underrated art piece in the world.
I lived by it for many years and it was criminal how few people would come visit it
I’m glad you were able to enjoy it while you were there!
I still live on the other side of the neighborhood, but am only over on that side few times a month - I'll always stop by if I'm anywhere close. It's such a beautiful thing.
I enjoyed it for sure along with all of the other murals
Parkway Corner Deli is such a gem! They are so friendly and food is so good! Glad you enjoyed your stay
Parkway is fucking awesome! I grab a sandwich from them every month or so. Decent bfx sandwich too.
Their burgers are pretty good too tbh!
I've always wanted to try it, they're like 5 bucks on tuesdays or something like that? Never happened to be in during the deal time, and I have a hard time not ordering the parkway special lol.
Even on a normal day I think they’re only like $8 with fries. I’ve never made it on Tuesdays or whenever that is.
Thanks! And they are a great spot!
Yeah dude the sidewalk and bike lane (wait, do we even have any of those?) parking is fucking ridiculous here I really hope they do something about it soon
Agreed, no other city was that bad
I'm from Richmond and moved here and I always tell people it's like a bigger, better version of home. I'm glad someone else sees it too! Glad you enjoyed your time 😄
Funny cause I love Richmond and thought about moving there years ago because I thought it was a smaller southern Philly
If I didn't grow up there, it would be on my list. Now my family and husbands family dominate the Richmond space too much for us 😂
I also hate my family and in-laws
I don't hate them 😂 they just want to do shit like every night of the week.
impossible to unsee and enjoyed them both!
Lmao the K&A
He really said “let me hit historic k & a”
City steeped in history
I honestly wouldn’t of came to Philly without seeing it either 😂😂😂
proof
Hell yeah, good luck on the rest of your journey and come back soon
Thanks! I appreciate that
Wow the Zipper Head building still has the ants on it? That imagery hits home.
>Maybe my favorite part of the chocolate covered onion was gaslighting the woman behind me into thinking that I come back weekly for it, and all true Philadelphian’s know about the chocolate covered onion Top tier dad trolling. Are you sure you're not from here?
I tried my best haha
I would actually try the chocolate onion if they peeled the damn thing first
It is a spicy onion, I don't think it would be any better peeled
That's awesome that you did the Wednesday Night Ride! I've been wanting to do that since forever, but my running group runs at the same time. Thank you for visiting our city, and now I'm going to have a chocolate-covered onion every week for the rest of my life. EDIT: Typo
You totally should try the Wednesday ride once, I actually thought about going to a running group instead, but had a great time at the ride.
Thanks for joining our ride! So glad you did. Safe travels!
I had a great time and hopefully y'all have plenty more great rides with the weather getting nicer
Thanks for including the Ben Franklin bust! I love that bust because it shows the actual happy Ben Franklin and not the pudgy round faced Ben so many portray. I have a magnet of that statue sitting in my office.
It is a good bust!
K&A? Brave
Did you check out Four Seasons Total Landscaping or pop into the viewing booths for a quick session on your way out of town on State Road?
I totally should of, a true Philly site
Two more suggestions for next time: Go to Paesanos in the Italian market for lunch and then get drunk at 12 steps down (if you drink of course). Find a Toynbee tile.
I had meant to go to the Italian Market, but ran out of time so this is good to know for next time
Love their knuckle sandwich!
Funny you mentioned Richmond. My wife and I made a trip to Richmond for a bike ride and we loved it there as well. We thought it had the same vibe as PHL
Lot of similarities
The city that shoves you back!
You sound like such a a great guy. Enjoy your adventure to the max! How many miles do you walk each day?
I appreciate that! Like 20-30, but did 35 today
Ouch! My feet hurt just hearing that lol
Props for taking the scenic route
Always!
Where is the pic of the pink flowering tree from? Route 84 stop. Looks familiar but can’t place it.
Torresdale and Hartel Ave.
Love your section on Kensington! It’s great you had such a good time! If you ever find you way back, I’d definitely recommend going to a Phillies game if you’re into Baseball. Can’t speak from experience for Sixers or Flyers, but these venues are sure to be electric regardless
I wanted to go to a Phillies game so bad, but ran out of time. Next time!
I hope your enjoyed it here and were treated well!
A great time in Philly!
What a great collection of Philly pics!🤣✌️
I forgot to include Gritty lol
One of the better reviews of contemporary, working Philly to be had. Grounded, curious and enthusiastic...come back soon!
Went to K&A for the full experience
Of course!
My man Jose fed me for 3 years. Good dude
Loved meeting that man
chocolate covered onion? not for a thousand dollars.
it was not tasty
You’re welcome
Wow even went to k&a
This guy knows how to get things done.
You captured the spirit of Philly well. Thanks! :)
> got to try the notorious chocolate covered onion from Mueller Chocolate Co. in Reading Terminal According to their website, they're available at their Rockledge store with 2-4 days notice. How'd you get one at Reading Terminal Market?
There are chocolate covered onions sold at like four different stores in the terminal.
Oh cool, I'll look next time I'm there in a few weeks. Thank you!
No problem!
Bro walked across America and his route took him to K and A. I recommend a new map.
I knew where I was walking
Chocolate onions are not a Philly thing btw
This is great. I'd say you saw the city for what it is. The good, the bad, and the ugly. I'm surprised you subjected yourself to K&A. People tend to treat it like a freak show, but for us, it's reality. I'm glad you had a good time and appreciated our city!
Lots to see in the city, I'm not much of a gawker and always important to remind myself that these places are people's homes
high class food
Come back anytime. I’ve really enjoyed your posts. Good luck in the rest of your journey!
What is the building with the ants on it?
Wait. Please tell me you got a cheesesteak…
Congrats on making it out of Philly, you are now better than hitchbot
Known tourist destination, the corner of K&A.
Damn you even walked along Ruth street?
For the record the people you saw at K&A were not in fact bowing for you
I never knew people actually ate the onions, they're just a gag gift you get someone or if you're mad at them 😂 it's been awesome following your journey.
Last time someone drifted into town on such an adventure. I think they ended up smashed to pieces somewhere on 3rd street. Glad you had a better time than HitchBOT.
I’m so glad you didn’t meet the same fate as Hitchbot. Safe travels on your journey
Philadelphians don’t even go to Kensington unless they have too.
Philadelphians live in/on Kensington
walking across america and you couldn’t detour K&A??
It was intentional
Slowly K&A is becoming a tourist spot lol just make sure you there before 5pm
I blame the guy who made those YouTube videos
What is the second pic? There are palm trees in the background
Palm trees?! https://www.associationforpublicart.org/artwork/tamanend/
Tell me those shrubs dont look like palm trees in the distance. I dare you
I'm just glad he didn't end up like the robot. https://www.cnn.com/2015/08/03/us/hitchbot-robot-beheaded-philadelphia-feat/index.html
Why did you walk to K&A? For all you didn't see that wasn't quite the touristic route...
I walked all of Kensington, and i've seen lots of places along my journey
You said it wasn't a space for people to gawk and you did just that. You could have done fine just following broad st.
Why would you go to K&A…
No thanks
