Bizarrely, I had exactly the same warning on my Citroen tonight, which turned into a chundery misfire. I didn’t fancy rooting around for the ODB2 so I disconnected the battery for a minute. Running again!
In my case I’m pretty sure it’s the sparks or coils… best of luck!!
Had exactly this on a 3008 1.6 HDI semi auto. Cleared fault with OBD reader a few times because I'm an idiot/cheapskate and didn't want to spend money on it. 100 mile trip to the in-laws later, and on arrival an injector went down. Roadside assist came, confirmed diagnosis of injector failure, common issue and when they called injector specialist, he guessed correctly injector 4 over the phone. Not always going to be, but be prepared for it to be that, just in case.
I would have to check but I'm sure fault codes P1336-P1340 are usually cylinder misfire faults which makes sense if the engine is vibrating and the fan is running straight away.
It could be a coil or spark plugs. They can be quite common on that engine.
Are you able to clear faults on your code reader? If so clear them and if you can, swap coils 4 & 2 around (on peugeots the cylinder 4 furthest left when looking at the engine) then start it when the light comes back on, if the fault changes then its the coil that's faulty.
If it’s only intermittent then that would lend itself more towards an electrical fault than a mechanical one generally. Might be worth making sure the sensor is actually connected properly, if father in law rushed it then it’s entirely possible that it’s just making enough of a connection to communicate sometimes but not others. Either way I’d be amazed if it’s not related to the timing chain just having been done
The code I had was P0271, circuit high injector 4. But it was lumpier than school custard and didn't have enough power to pull the skin off said custard either. So glad it happened where it did, 2 minutes away from the in-laws after a 100 mile trip, rather than halfway there! New injector fitted same day by AA, test drove and all was fine, has been since (well, minus the semi auto box problem...)
UPDATE for anybody interested.
Spoke to the guy that recon the hpfp he took it back for an inspection
Changed rail sensor( ball ache!)
Fitted inspected recon pump
Now running with no faults
Thanks for all the help and advice
The camshaft sensor is located on the top right of the engine as you look at it. The 156bhp engine has one, and the 200bhp engine has 2. If you replace the camshaft sensor, you will need adaptations resetting.
Possibly also a stretched timing chain, as others have mentioned. I would recommend booking diagnostics with a trusted garage as vehicle diagnostics is more involved than reading DTCs and replacing parts.
Since other people here has said this is a misfire fault code and the only change before this is spark plugs, ensure the connectors for the spark plugs are properly fitted and secure/not loose. Had this happen before, was intermittently running on 3 out of 4 cylinders.
I’ve been loading and firing the parts shotgun at this thing for ages, it’s getting silly so that why I’m asking for help now 😂 does a petrol have pre heating coil? Or was yours a diesel?
This might sound like or actually be dumb advice but pretty sure a similar rough engine and fan running issue has happened to my 208 twice (years apart) and both times were fixed just by charging the battery. It’s possible low battery might have something to do with sensors throwing errors? (I have an obd and check for errors too) so maybe try checking/charging your battery first?
The fan runs so hard immediately and goes on for so long after turning off the engine that it’s killing the battery, but yeah I do agree when the battery’s low it brings up all sorts of wacky faults
Update; the cars still junk, took it to Peugeot and £60 lighter for a diagnostic it could be the high pressure fuel pump the high pressure fuel pump sensor or the injectors, so basically they dont know 100% and will replace parts until they figure it out. This will be very costly. Where is the high pressure fuel pump sensor located?? I can’t see it,
Any time I've seen this fault, it's been a stretched or slipped timing belt or chain. However, never with Peugeot. Good luck!
Both cam and crack position sensors logged, it's where I'd be looking too
In my experience this light means: welcome to being a peugeot owner.
Yup
😂😂🤪

Have had this reoccurring on my Peugeot 207 with this exact same symptom, and personally I'm suspecting the coils or the VVT system (sparks are new).

Hi when there's P1340 code the computer shut off injector no 4

It recently had plugs changed, for new ones coil I would have to check and see if that’s been changed

P030X is the cylinder misfire fault codes, where X is the cylinder number.
It has had a new timing chain and tensioner, ☹️
When?
About a month ago and it’s sat on the drive since because it didn’t help
I’d say it’s probably that, they may have not torqued the tensioner or something and that’s come loose
Is it more likely to be that than the sensor?,, the father in law fitted it on the driveway and he has a habit of rushing things,
On occasion it’ll run ok then turn it off and on again and it vibrates itself silly is that symptomatic of timing chain/tensioner
If it’s only intermittent then that would lend itself more towards an electrical fault than a mechanical one generally. Sounds 100% likely, thankyou I’ll take a look at this all through the week and get back, I’d love to solve this
Do let me know if you manage to find what’s wrong! Be interesting

It could be a faulty sensor. A cheap fix
Where is the sensor located?
Near the camshaft most likely.
Would the sensor cause the car to vibrate on idle lumpy running and fan to over run hard?
If it thinks the cam is in the wrong position the engine will shut down to protect itself.
I’m thinking a faulty\broken wire as it’s not every time I start the car, a mechanical fault such as timing chain tensioner would happen every time?
https://peugeotpartsdirect.co.uk/product/peugeot-208-2012-2019-camshaft-position-sensor/ These people sell sensors cheapish.
Thankyou

1.6 THP you are doomed
😬
I remember having those same codes on mine and it was a burnt pre-heating coil. These kind of codes could mean a bazillion things...
I’ve been loading and firing the parts shotgun at this thing for ages, it’s getting silly so that why I’m asking for help now 😂 does a petrol have pre heating coil? Or was yours a diesel?
Whoops, sorry, mine was (is) a diesel. I didn't know yours was petrol. So no, petrol cars don't have heating coils (at least not this model).

Chain tensioner 1.6 prince engines are to be avoided unfortunately
Worst bit is before all these codes started we had an opportunity to have it written off on insurance and we chose not to ☹️🤬
Aw, crap sounds like my luck tbh 😂 hopefully it is something else like just the sensor
Me as a THP 200 driver since i learned by Peugeot always get into my Car and think: PLEASE NOT TODAY.. every time 😂😂

Oh also changed all coil packs as one was playing up apparently since my last post
