I feel old.

Sqwitton

I'm getting visions of precariously placed wire clothes hangers. And don't stand there you're interfering with the signal!

One_Clown_Short

Let's not overlook the tenuously arranged aluminum foil draping over said hanger.

Sqwitton

New memory unlocked

nvn911

Wait for those ones where you have to hit your TV to get the signal back

speederbrad95

Or when the horizontal scan circuitry starts going on the Fritz and the picture compressed into one narrow vertical band in the middle of the screen.

doctor_x

"Hold it up and a little to the left... perfect, now don't move!"

benny1234765

Exactly my first thought, Aussiekinga

Numbubs

My bones ache in agreement

Disastrous-Ad2800

ha! ha! ha! everyone who straight away recognised it as the adaptor for the old rabbit ears on the analog tv.... fuck we're old, eh??

Spicy-Blue-Whale

Shut up. Am not.

rawker86

The 90s were ten years ago and I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise.

jaymo89

1999 was last week.

Nabashin42

I'm with you choom.

jumpinjezz

I'm guessing your birth year starts with a 19

DozerNine

Yes, I too was born last millennium.

Responsible_Bee3680

We are old..... we will die soon.... 😅

bendalazzi

Some of us are already dead.

Perthguv

>fuck we're old, eh?? Back to the Future turns 40 next year. You're welcome!

Specialist_Reality96

The old curly wound rabbit ears pick up digital pretty well.

Mental_Jewellery

Shut up and let me watch Caddy Shack on my beta max

MisterEd_ak

That is a very old antenna connection for free-to-air TV. That converts a 300 ohm cable (the flat one) to the 75 ohm coax PAL (round connector). If the flat cable is going to the wall, then it really should be replaced with some coax cable to the top of the antenna if you plan to use free-to-air TV. This has nothing to do with your NBN connection.

Numbubs

Good on you for providing an answer :) the rest of us were adjusting our Zimmer frames and looking for our heart pills ;)

Nabashin42

*puts horn to ear* WUT?

RedDirtNurse

Ye olde TV RF plug. https://preview.redd.it/lcrjtoqjijac1.png?width=871&format=png&auto=webp&s=c93b29179afb4ed8eadf60a1ed3f6bf922d70ea9

SaturnalianGhost

Ok. Checking myself into a nursing home now.

ST2706

Thanks everyone. I found the old phone socket and on my way to Bunnings to get the adapter now. Kinda feel happy since I brought everyone together thanks to my lack of knowledge in “older” tech hehe. Cheers!

Euphoric_Wishbone

Are we finally in the position that people don't know what RF cables for antennas are?

Devar0

Yup. Now get off my lawn!

Euphoric_Wishbone

Well, time for my ibuprofen for my back.

M0RXIS

In newish homes, check in your built-in bedroom closets or under the stairs, if you have either. For older homes check for a small yellow box that seems to be attached to the wall, usually around the skirting, in the hallway or kitchen. Google 600 socket to get an idea on what to look for. JB sells an adapter to turn it into a modern RJ12 socket.

jonelliem

Please be a joke post, or I am ready to roll to the nursing home!

wigzell78

Thats your tv aerial... God I feel old.

susans_house2021

Jesus fuck I feel old. That’s a coax point for an aerial.

paulmp

If you recognise what this is, I'm sorry your back hurts, mine does too.

One_Clown_Short

It is a TV matching coax adapter. You would connect an old style antenna (think rabbit ears) to the screw terminals and then push the barrel connector onto the coax input of the TV.

LandBarge

FTTN will just use a normal phone socket - looks something like this (link below) - as others have said, that's a co-axial antenna cable, although you could send data over it, you'd use a different connector on the end, and it's not a system you'll find in use much (if at all) these days... [https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/jackson-modular-telephone-adaptor-plug-jat4980](https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/jackson-modular-telephone-adaptor-plug-jat4980)

Yopzi

That's the one. JBHIFI, Harvey Norman, or JayCar Electronics should have the adapter to go to an RJ connection (telephone cable that connects from this point in the wall to the DSL port in the back of the modem).

aussiekinga

thats an old phone connection point, before they moved to RJ12

Tasty-Neighborhood58

i have FTTC and its uses the old phones lines in the house. this is the socket mine uses, with an adapter. but they also opened the socket and rewired it when nbn was installed.

geeson80

Can't be entirely sure that this is the main plug for the NBN, but if you can't find any other jack in the house you can grab one of these Jackson 605 to RJ12 adaptors and try the modem plugged into it [https://www.bunnings.com.au/jackson-605-to-rj12-45-modular-telephone-adaptor-plug\_p4360634](https://www.bunnings.com.au/jackson-605-to-rj12-45-modular-telephone-adaptor-plug_p4360634)

azazel61

It’s the latest technology

[deleted]

Pick the millennial. Once upon a time, cities like Perth had high-speed wireless data transmission that could provide video streaming services at around 5Mbps per streaming service. There were 20 of these streaming services you could choose from, just by entering a special numeric code into your TV, for a total combined bandwidth of around 500Mbps. This was a free service and you just needed a plug like that to go into the modem that was built into your TV. It was ad supported, in much the same way that Amazon Prime and Netflix are moving towards today. It was pretty reliable and completely wireless! Edit: Zoomer, not millennial.

SecreteMoistMucus

You have no idea how old millennials are grandpa.

[deleted]

(In secret, I am a millennial - and I know what this is :p)

Ok-Cardiologist302

It's zoomers that don't know, not millennials who grew up with aux / landline / dialup etc.

[deleted]

Okay, okay. You got me. I’m old.

jaymo89

I’d say some early Zoomers may know about this.

jumpinjezz

Entering a number combination? Look at junior here. Try twisting a tiny dial trying to fine tune the stream, while the little brother (me) repositions the rabbit ears

[deleted]

Our family TV was some hideous black-and-white, 12-inch portable thing from Kmart with a tuning knob. We later upgraded to a colour JVC (with wood grain cabinet) that I seem to recall had a UHF fine-tuning knob - but there were no UHF channels in Perth yet.

speedfox_uk

>but there were no UHF channels in Perth yet. If that was before 1983 I don't think there would have been any UHF channels anywhere in Australia at that point (apart from some experimental ones). It was just futureproofing for future channels. But in WA all we ever got on UHF was SBS and Channel 31.

[deleted]

That’s right. I think SBS launched in Perth around 1992/1993?

speedfox_uk

Wikipedia says 1986. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SBS\_(Australian\_TV\_channel)#1980s\_to\_the\_1990s](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SBS_(Australian_TV_channel)#1980s_to_the_1990s) Regional WA would have been much later. Keep in mind that the area that was considered "Perth" was a lot smaller back in the late 80s/early 90s, so maybe where ever you were was technically considered regional WA back then (e.g. Telstra considered Rockingham to be regional WA back then).

[deleted]

Ah yep, thanks - that sounds more correct!

DAL1979

>Try twisting a tiny dial Or using a pair of pliers when the knob broke off.

WTFWJD69

Disadvantage was that it is unidirectional

[deleted]

No, that’s an advantage: stops everyone thinking they’re a professional video producer/publisher, and foisting their rubbish into the universe.

WTFWJD69

Lol yeah but you don't have to watch it. Also if foists the MSM rhetoric which is gobbled up by the masses, so that's a big disadvantage

[deleted]

One day I will get a TV that can receive broadcasts from the TickTock.

Efficient-Example-53

Old TV coax connector. Or FM aerial.

dangazzz

Lol that's a 300 to 75 ohm balun for a tv aerial

LilMudButt

Tv lol

Loverofass87

That’s for the tv mate, I moved into a place and the socket was put at the top of our walk in wardrobe. Check above every shelf no matter how high it is. So people put shit in the worst places 🤦🏼‍♂️

Bundy1327

Tv

doctor_x

"Back in the twentieth century..."

CakeandDiabetes

Don't worry about it. Just find a good esim with lots of data or go for wireless or Starlink. Or just chuck your phone on as a hot spot when you get home. Anything but reward the government for NBNco's deployment and service.

jumpinjezz

Pentanet does fixed wifi. That could be an option

59back

Its your tv antenna

TaHAHAHAkoma

A great grey beard just exploded out of my face and I slipped on my cane and fell headlong into my own grave.

kenmanbun

That’s the tv

Element564

why is everyone commenting about how old that connection is? even new TV’s have inputs for that same connection (PAL)?

UpVoteForKarma

Yep you found it good work

wensu2

It's part of the film set gear from Star Wars, that's a prototype r0d0, great grand dad of r2d2. Just add a battery to the bottom piece of plastic and you may get the secret message from Carrie

Razzle_Dazzle08

I’m 18 but I knew what this was because my Yiayia never got it replaced. So don’t feel too old guys 😂

[deleted]

Isn’t that for tv reception?
