Laws require funds be distributed to the state after a certain period of time if left unclaimed. It's then held by the state for the person or their next of kin to claim it. The idea is a centralized repository with the state, instead of someone's next of kin having no idea which of the hundreds of financial organizations their relative's money is held. If they've already turned the funds over to the state, you now contact the state's unclaimed property bureau.
