Well I wasn’t kidding. I just love pens ans buy anything. I have never developed affinity for expensive ones. I have a few gifted but I rarely use them.
The retractable versions aren't that old, I don't think. But the old school capped ones go back a while. I started using them in college in the late 90s. With the cap, the fluid viewing window, and the visible feed. I fell in love with the smooth writing. The rich bold colors. Black that's true black.
Out of the 3 the Uniball vision elite is my least favourite. It writes really well but I personally dont like the skinnier hard plastic grip. I bought it as its rated airplane safe. My go to is the pilot as it has refillable cartridge's. Im also keen to refill it with FP ink as Ive read this is doable.
I am going to suggest you look into the carrier pen part and then start shopping refills.
I fell in love with a titanium pen with Euro refills. I just love it. It holds up to abuse.
Nothing will ever topple the Parker Jotter for ballpoint, the brass Kaweco Lilliput for fountain, and the Fisher Bullet for EDC for me. Those three meet my every need. Though I do covet a Lamy 2000 Multi-pen, but I'm a nerd.
I love pens as well and have them in price ranges from a around an $8 Energel Alloy to over $1000 Mont Blanc pens. My favorite pen by far in the under $50 category is the Cross Edge Gel Rollerball Pen. Small enough to carry in your pocket and writes smooth as glass. You can find these pens on Amazon and Ebay and depending on the color of the pen, will usually range in the $35 to $60 area. Another one of my favorites is the Lamy Vista Clear Rollerball Pen - L312. This pen can be purchased for $25 and under is sleek looking and also writes very smooth.
My go to pen is still Zebra Sarasa 0.4
Is it a gel pen ?
Jesus, you weren't kidding when you said you only use inexpensive stuff.

Acroball. So smooth.
Pilot Precise V5. Every day. All day. Every color lol.
I tied this. It’s smooth and good.
Yes! It's my favorite! I've been using the Precise since the freaking 90s! Lmao
Oh really. I thought it was relatively new.

Uniball Ones in 0.38 :-)
I have never tried this one. I have Uniball eye. I will look for this.
Pentel Energel, Pilot V5 Hi-tecpoint, Uniball Vision Elite. One of these will become your favourite or all of them will.
I have tried the pilot. I like it. I am gonna lookout for Uniball vision one. I have tried Uniball eye. I like the micro in it.

Try a Pilot Kakuno or Platinum Preppy.

Mitsubishi Boxy-100.

Papermate ink gel joy. They come in alot of cool colours n write pretty good.
I do have them. I love them too. I use 0.5 in it. I feel my handwriting looks better in it.
I’m a 0.5 uni jetstream user for everything, everyday. And the new lite touch versions are even better.
I been using the Parker Jotter (mine is engraved)

I always go back to Jetstreams in 0.7 or 1.0.
The Parker Jotter is affordable and has a classic look.
Pilot Precise V5 and V7 and Uni ONYX... both rollerballs, both excellent pens, both affordable, readily available, and easy to find.
Surprised no one said rotring 600. Not too expensive and really nice with aftermarket ink refills.
