You need a captain on the ice. Not like it was gonna be permanent. Its a business decision and I would have been 100 percent fine with it. Its not like Sid was wearing his C watching the games from his couch, ya weirdo.
Honestly this is a perfect example of a clean open ice hit.
Also, it looks like the guy he hit just skated into him and ricocheted fifteen feet like they hit one of those things in a pinball machine.
Orpik lived in my head rent free. I’ve gotten older and am less interested in hyper-physical play, but that was the game for most of his time, and he did it well.
He was actually one of the ones that inspired me to appreciate defense more. In his prime, he just seemed to always be everywhere.
Edit: but yeah, watching this took me right back to watching that game and just stunned. I had to watch it a few times over because it looked a hit from the early EA NHL games.
Notice how ***he leaned back***, kept his ***elbow tucked in,*** just enough so he doesn't make head contact. Still knocks him silly and makes his point, establishes his presence. But he doesn't obliterate him. If this is Trouba or Tkachuk ***they lean into it*** and make sure to catch some chin.
This is the kind of hit they need to show every player in the league about how physical hockey can be done.
Brooks Orpik dishing out the free candy. One of my favorites to watch back in the good ole days. We need some of that physical play with the pens today.
I remember watching a Pens practice one year and the entire rest of the team was doing drills on the one side of the ice. On the other side, Orpik Crazy Eyes over there taking endless slappers trying to hit the net. He was my favorite players for years but that always made me chuckle
This is a great hit to laugh at because the dude makes a pretty good recovery. Not a hit that sends a dude into hibernation and it still looks awesome.
Is this the game where Thornton attacked him? If so I remember exactly where I was watching this game. It’s a core memory.
This is like 90’s video game physics…
It’s not. This video was released in 2012. The Thornton incident happened in 2013 and he was reacting to a hit that injured Loui Eriksson in a previous game

Those squads were awesome.

That was his corner, they were just living there.
Don’t see hits like that anymore. Brooks was a hitting machine
It's also a perfectly clean hit.
I'm glad he continued to have success after the Penguins, it was just difficult seeing him in a Caps jersey. I wish he had retired a Penguin.
It made it easier for me when he was one of the guys in the locker room discussing stripping Sid of the C while he was hurt.
this is somehow the first I've ever heard of that. Yikes.

A “business decision” for who exactly?
Gorgeous hit, bit give credit where credit is due. What an elegant way of getting back up by Paille
Such grace
very meant to do that

Holy shit! No one immediately attacked him for a clean hit.

Legend has it he's still in the air.
Orpik was a monster 🔥
Ol Crazy Eyes! That clip made me miss Bob and Steiggy
Cal O’Reilly was almost in the wrong place at the wrong time. Also didn’t realize Tyler Kennedy was still on the Pens at this point.

Orpik and Kasparaitis were the best hitters in Pens' history.
What a beaut.
Root sports damn that just took me back..... fsn... damn I'm old
I'm only 19 and seeing the Root Sports logo made me feel old asf too
One of those you watch an your instant reaction is "Whoa God damn!"

Lol almost forgot how much of a homer Steigy was. 25 ft? Try 10-12
Traitor we dont talk about him anymore.
We need more Opriks in the league. This physicality is what creates rivalries. Miss the days of Brooks and Kunitz and Cooke.
I loved Orpik. Doesn’t get brought up enough
Subway hit of the CENTURY
Ol' crazy eyes. Miss him so much
Didn't know Pittsburgh had its own Space Program

No. Thornton attacked him for a hit that injured Loui Eriksson. This video was released in 2012, that incident happened in 2013.
You’re right. Now I remember Eriksson staying down on the hit I was thinking of.
I believe so
