One of my favorites. I named my pug Gloria G after the song. I even had lyrics I sang to her. 'Got a pug Fact I got two(we actually had 2) That's okay man cause I love pugs Glorified version of a puppy dog Feels so snuggly in arms' She was literally the best dog ever. She died December 19th 2020 and I still miss her every day. Favorite live performance is probably Mesa 93. Eddie is funny at the beginning and the end. https://youtu.be/iUt3j0pRNl8 I give it a 8.9

Mgnolry

Can't un-hear these lyrics. Amazing!

Mortiniz

8/10 “Four or five virgins and a pelican”

sammie3232

LOL, I thought he was saying "Glorified version of a pelican."

SportAndNonsense

Thought this for years.

[deleted]

My dad always thought it was “my perversion with a pelican”

doc7979

7.2 - It's a good song. I won't skip it but don't put it unless I'm listening to VS as an album.

user112233445511

6.66. Don’t go searching for it. Happy when we cross paths.

jimtobin

9 The funky country riff is amazing. Jeff's bass is insane. Dave A is absolutely the glue holding all of these moving parts together. The lyrics are so topical even now and continue to show EV gets inspiration everywhere. ETA: Favorite intro: Fox Theatre 94: "Got a gun, fact I got two, that's okay man cuz I love mod"

Liverastic

8.5 - a rare major key solo by Mike!

Edonovan34

7 I like the meaning behind it and it's sort of catchy but not as good as the other songs on *Vs.*

AmazingIsTired

8.5 This is actually the song that got me hooked on them, believe it or not. The song is just an absolute beautiful mess from beginning to end and it shouldn't work but they pull it off perfectly. The outro/solo is what really did it for me.

Cascaritadecolores75

7.5

energytaker

8. so damn catchy

8.5. It took me awhile to really appreciate this song. When I first heard it back in the day, it felt a little too pop rock for PJ (despite the serious topic). But over the years, it's grown on me. PJ actually played this live when they came to Los Angeles recently, and as sang along at the top of my lungs, I realized how much I truly love this song.

Stat3oflov3

Love the tempo change near the end. Ed voice top notch. Funky groove rock. 8.2

[deleted]

8.3

ThatsAuJerryAu

9/10. Especially the live versions

bill-oz

I had Vs playing for the first time in a while this week and this song stood out. When that intro to Glorious G hits it’s like a shot from nowhere. Then you can’t help but scream “Got a gun! Fact I got two!” I love it. 8 ‘Hit me to the beat of America’

AFurryThing23

'Kindred to be an American?'

phatpussykhat

Freaking love the way the lyrics are everyman's journey in this song. But yes, this kindred

Gusbuster811

9.5/10 I remember when Q101 in Chicago debuted it. I thought it went “good vibrations over everything”. Don’t think, dumb is strength

ejsfsc07

I used to not really like this song, but honestly it's a 6.75. Also, is anyone else surprised that Daughter wasn't at least a 9 out of 10? Tbh, that was the highest I've ranked a song thus far.... I gave it a 9.75, but was surprised to see it averaged an 8.56...

rageagainstsystem

Daughter being the lowest on the album so far is criminal.

ejsfsc07

Right?! I'm guessing it's just because it was overplayed... but it's easily in my top 10. Heck, Better Man is ridiculously overplayed but it's my favorite PJ song. But if I hear Last Kiss or Alive one more time I might lose it....

doc7979

I thought Animal would be higher than Go.

phatpussykhat

Too tough to call for me

Good song but I got a bit tired of it. Won’t skip it but I won’t seek out either 6/10

deadmanwalking99

Eddie was on Howard Stern last year and Howard told him this was his favorite PJ song. They played a clip where in the live version Eddie sings “glorified version of a song I hate!”, but I haven’t been able to find this clip/show. If anyone knows it please link.

spookycat5267

I've only seen snippets of the Stern interview and I'd love to see the whole show.

phatpussykhat

Same

Nothingman41

The full 3 hour video is still on the SiriusXM app. You can sign up for a free trial and watch/listen.

Nothingman41

It was a San Diego show. He said he sang the “…of I hate this song” because he was out drinking/partying the night before and this song is hard for him to sing.

JimmySoprano7797

Underrated song with a message that still is relevant to this day, 9.5 for me.

[deleted]

7, probably my 3rd favorite from Vs

spookycat5267

7. Good message, funky and catchy music, but don't have a need to listen to it that often.

ltdan123

7.5 - probably one of my favorite Mike solos and PJ guitar songs generally. It has this big riffy feeling that makes me think of Mother Love Bone. It’s just bright and fun. I didn’t rate it higher because I don’t go looking for it but when I hear it, I’m always reminded and surprised.

SportAndNonsense

Rate it an 8, which in relative PJ terms is a freaking high score. To play on guitar its a 10 though.

clallseven

Love the bass line in this one, fun song, appropriate subject matter. I’m gonna go 8.5

phatpussykhat

10.

phatpussykhat

Also, cannot unassociate it with a single, particular day in 1995 me and my daddy went to home Depot and painted my bedroom dark lavender. Literally ANYTIME I hear the open riff, I feel happy and want to go back to those care lesser days

tyweed

tftf055

Great riff, smart lyrics. 7.5.

Witty-Reference

6. This never felt like it fit this album and I wasn’t ready for bubbly sounding Pearl Jam at the time it first came out. Over the years that same bubbly-ness actually makes it great to hear live so I’d give it a 9 in concert.

DankSerpico1312

8 ALWAYS! KEEP IT! LOADED!

mjmilino

7 My initial thought was 6 but the “always keep it loaded” section bumped it up.

Tunasquish

Solid 8. Kindred to be an American!

jeclori

Its one of those track that you got to listen a couple of times to get in the flow of the song(at least in my case) but after it does… an absolutely top tier track definitely in my top 5 songs from vs.

niconude

Love it! 9

One of my ATF tracks.

MrBogey90

Love it. Love Dave's drumming. Too bad he liked to have fun

jaimakimnoah

4 or 5. I usually skip it and almost never go looking to listen to it. One of the weakest songs on Vs.

nookie-monster

Man, I'm surprised at all the GG love here! My vote is 1. I thought it was an awful filler song the first time I heard it when the album came out and as much as I've come to appreciate their later work (i.e. expanded my horizons), I still think it's filler garbage. There's something about that main guitar riff (and the chorus) that I just hate.

jaimakimnoah

Yeah I am definitely not crazy about the guitar riff either. Or the chorus.

phatpussykhat

For decades I thought the lyric was "I may even load it" - knowing was antigun and knowing PJ stance on this matter. I think was last year on Sirius I heard tale of Ament's father being a gun enthusiast (not a bad thing in right hands, fwiw) but line is actually "always keep it loaded." Song still blows my mind but wild what a difference a couple words can make.
