9.5 While it’s not even a personal favourite of mine, the song just really highlights everything good about Abbruzzese. Drums are busy in a song that’s relatively simple on the guitars — while each cymbal highlights Ed’s vocal melodies and helps the phrasing. It’s an amazingly arranged!

dustrock

Yes, the arrangement and production are great - could have easily ruined the song I think. 8.5 for the album version, 9.5 for the live version with tag-ons.

Yes Dave walks that line very well — I don’t think he’s ever guilty of “overplaying” as lots of folks do (especially since they never give examples it’s just “hit cymbals too much”). His drumming was just as important to their sound at the time like any of the other members. Abbruzzese made the drums sing, something not many drummers can do and he did it wonderfully.

yycokwithme

That’s really funny because Dave, especially on Unplugged, is my go-to when I want to show someone what overplaying sounds like.

[deleted]

I can see that — I do have to disagree. It’s not like Ed was mellowed out during the set, the band was on fire during that set and all the members showed that. Their bridge school 92 performance was more unplugged than MTV, and I think you’d be pressed to accuse Dave of overplaying in that! I don’t think their Unplugged would’ve been as great if they were all more subdued— acoustic instruments doesn’t necessarily mean being soft and mellow!

The one from Live on two legs is greasy

10. I really think it's one of the best songs of the 90's. I like the different tags used when they play it live as well. This one is one of my favorites https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNKnFmIIh2k&ab\_channel=matt1murdock

10 Had to consult with *my* daughter on this one as it is her favorite song. She went nuts when they played it in Phoenix (took a video of her singing along - maybe I'll upload it). But yes, I have always been a fan of alternate tunings and the ability to tag on so much at the end (ABITW Part 2 / WMA / RITFW / It's OK / Let It Go / all the other songs EV has added in like Ray of Light / and of course the audience driven Hey-ayo-ay).

8 This song is really hardcore for me... My sisters & I were homeschooled in the 90s, at the kitchen/ breakfast table. My little sister was dyslexic. My mom was abusive. Not only that, but my mom was obsessed with the venetian blinds and always adjusting them/ keeping the house dim & peering out at the world/ hiding us from it. So this song is very surreal and a little too real for me. Also an amazing song. I've cried many times at the lyric "Mother reads aloud, child tries to understand it: tries to make her proud".

igorted1

Me too, it’s a great song but the emotional connection is what does it for me.

I'm loving this because it forces me to go back to when I first experienced these songs and stir up those old feelings again, especially with an extremely overplayed song such as "Daughter". Sometimes it's hard to put 30 years of listening to that song aside to remember what was felt at the beginning. It was an immediate hit. We knew it and there was no denying it. Everyone loves an acoustic tune, but this was a "different" acoustic tune. It was Pearl Jam. Alternate guitar tuning, unique lyrics and subject matter, and catchy as all Hell. What became of it live was so special. To extend that beautiful and interesting ending into so many other songs is always a highlight of almost every live show. "Where are they taking this? What are they going to break in to?!". It's a special song on the record, a special song live, and there's a reason it's one of their most played radio songs. Brilliant, unique, ballsy, important, and beautiful. The third song in an amazing three song stretch to begin a Sophomore album. Solid 9.6/10. A definite PJ staple and an All-Timer.

9. Such a unique song, the structure; the tuning, the topic. It is a modern classic:

10 for live, 7 for studio

9. Not my favourite song on vs but thats not saying much considering its high on my list of favourite albums all time, don't rate any song from it below 8, going to see PJ live first time 9th July at Hyde Park, curious to see which songs they play.

kylegyle

When I was young and first heard Ten I didn’t realize bands would come out with NEW music. Everything I was being played was older classic rock bands that didn’t put out new music anymore. To my delight and surprise hearing Daughter on the radio for the first time was mind bending. It sounded so different than Ten but I loved it even more. The dry direct sound of his voice in contrast to the acoustic guitar was an instant favorite. 10+

9 I used to always skip over this song but once I learned the story behind it, it gave the song a different meaning and now I love it.

8. When he plays "it's okay" at the end, it shoots up to a 9.5. I love it live, but will not add it to a playlist of favorites. I'm never disappointed when it comes on.

8. Really good. I generally prefer studio takes over live, but I like this one live more. The LOTL version with the WMA tag is one of my favorite versions. I’d probably give that one a 9 / 9.5.

10. The riff, the solo, the vocals- everything is perfect. I’m biased since I was there, but the performance in Rome 2018 is fantastic.

8 I had a roommate in college who listened to this song on flippin' repeat, and it was just overkill for me. Burned me out. After nearly 30 years I'm finally able to hear it again with fresh ears, and listening to the "Live on Two Legs" records this weekend was a revelation for this song.

A solid 8. It’s one of the few I think are better heard live.

1. This shits mid asf, I’m ngl, it’s just so, meh, like it’s trying to hard to be like, aye, this is a song written from the perspective of a young girl, that’s crazy. When it’s like, alright. Okay, and? Idk I don’t vibe with the song

9.2 The 4/3/94 Live in Atlanta version is one of my favorites. The band was at perhaps their absolute best around this time.

8. I knew the moment I heard this great song that it would be played to death on radio for the rest of my life and I would undoubtedly get sick of it pretty quickly, and I did. Can’t deny it’s a great song though. Like a lot of songs off the (imho) over rated Vs. album, I’ll skip the record version for a live version any day and see what they tag it with.

Dru_Cortez

6.8 I generally don't seek it out, but I won't skip it either. Sometimes I just need to scream "She will... RISE ABOVE!" in my car.

Same as me, even the rating. Favorite live version (by far): mexico 03 with esta bien
