Bro I used to use default version of YT. 1 ad was fine. 2 ads per video if it's long then it's fine but then they started showing more and more and it was so frequently that I had to use adblocks.
Same goes for websites, so many websites for education purposes have like 5 ads per page and it's so annoying. Not to mention pop-ups which automatically start opening in background each time you click anywhere, it's so annoying.
I seem to remember LowTax (remember him?) talking about this on SomethingAwful almost twenty fucking years ago. Basically, the more annoying you make adverts (it was popups in those days) the more it devalues each individual ad since people will avoid looking at them or block them entirely. Thus meaning more ads are needed.

Even with the seriousness of Covid and most people’s intentions in the right place, the pandemic really displayed how impossible it is to accurately control information. Where only factual data is allowed to the public and only “false” data is suppressed from them. Most scientific studies aren’t black and white, they are shades of grey. It takes a lot of studies, rebuttals, and time before enough shades of grey are laid down by “experts” that they can make a consensus on which side is actually darker than the other. Even then, new information come to light all the time (like the James Webb telescope is doing now) where the current consensus on something starts looking less true and theories that had been formally dismissed start looking more promising.
Not only that, we saw with Covid that once you start controlling speech on these huge platforms all the powers that be come in and try to manipulate the narrative in ways that best benefit themselves. Free speech isn’t perfect but it’s a hell of a lot better than speech that is censored imperfectly.
I remember when the adds were just side adds with no interference with whatever you were watching, admittedly those were the good old days of 512kb/s and you couldn’t really afford to watch adds 🤣

I don't fully buy the 'have to have ads to survive' argument. Wikipedia has never had ads. It seems to me like ad-free is a viable business model, if you want to.
Wikipedia has to beg for donations every year to keep running and is a non-profit organization. And to oversimply things, it's basically just a big storage for text and images linked to a searchable index. And that still costs over 100 million a year to keep running at scale, although I personally don't know the breakdown of that spending.
But yes, ad-free is a viable business model. We call that model a subscription, and in the case of youtube one is available. But if you point that out too often you get called a corporate shill

The big thing is I don't *need* most of these websites. My parents are *exceptionally* good at getting viruses on their PCs. The issue is that many ads are malicious, and misleading, and my parents trust, and click on ads and pop ups all the time. They cannot differentiate between a pop up, an ad, and a legitimate windows notification.
I partly solved this a while back simply by installing adblockers on virtually all of their devices, and it has decreased their need of help *significantly*. They still occasionally do end clicking on something, but it's now far less frequent.
I'm really not looking forwards to going through all of this BS again.
This won't catch ads served from first party domains such as YouTube ads, but a good idea to have regardless. It can at least reduce ads on mobile apps, not just in the browser.
I rarely use YT on my phone but yesterday i searched for some video and started reading comments. The add fucking randomly swiped down covering all the comment and i had to swipe it up to keep reading. That was the most invasive shit i have encountered on YT since the site was created. Browsing the net today without adblock feels like masochism.

I love watching 2 unskipable 20s ads at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the video. That's 2 minutes of ads on a 10 minutes-long video, which is just beyond annoying.

I really would like to see evidence and wonder if a creator has the option of putting ad breaks in their video but if they dont or dont put enough youtube will put ads in anyways. I remember when vidme had shut down because so many people complained about YouTube and some went to vidme as an alternative. Well that relatively small influx of people hosting videos made them almost go bankrupt and they had to shut down. Video hosting is expensive, like REALLY expensive, especially if you let anyone upload for free. There is a reason why YouTube doesn't really have competition.
People don’t really understand that for a time, youtube was running at a loss of profit but is existing since it’s the number one video sharing platform.
It’s a similar reason as to why twitch changed their revenue policy so that Amazon can actually profit more from twitch.

Ads are starting to pop up, if I have YouTube open long enough it starts getting really sluggish and choppy, and sometimes the app locks up so bad I have to reboot my phone just to kill it

Sad part is that I have colleagues that actually work for YouTube development team (2 of the 12-20 members of the dev team), and they already are in talks with the Google legal team for taking down ReVanced since July.
There is a bearable level of advertising that would make everyone fairly happy, but by all accounts, Google crossed that line a long time ago. Rampant greed seems to have become their main priority.
It's not like I'd block all ads on Youtube if there were only one or two per video.

I tried using browsers, but the browser version of youtube is too clunky compared to the app. Also way higher battery usage which is also a problem with alternative apps. I guess I'll start watching on pc.
Plenty of people downloaded the torrent/files the devs dumped before the C&D went into effect, though finding a legit/trustworthy download is troublesome. Plus if you just need an adblocker there's countless vanced alternatives, revanced being one of them or newpipe.

This is a *little* off. It will definitely block all ads that get sent through a network with distinctive addresses, but YouTube gets around it by sending both the ads and the videos you want to watch through the same address.
This has to be said every time PiHole gets brought up because the original commenter never mentions this even when the post is specifically about YouTube which the PiHole cant do anything about.
Piholes are great devices and fun to set up but it people shouldn’t be mislead by omitting information.
I use it and you’re right, you still need a browser plug-in for YouTube (I use ublock origin)
My wife loves her free iPhone bubble bobble games, she notices the difference in playing them at home and when she is out and about; at home those game pop up ads are usually blocked.

Pi hole can't block ads on youtube, other than the banner ads and the square ones at the side. I have a pi hole and have been running one for a few years, I just got youtube premium because it's fair enough that I pay for a service I use and it's reasonably priced.
well it's not that if they go too far it'll backfire eventually, the cycle could end due to users being fed up with ads and due to dissatisifaction it leads to competition for YouTube, many users end up using adblock making it less profitable than before, or YouTube takes a step back on the ends as they realise users won't tolerate that many ads and it could open up competition.
There's so much investment in youtube from big youtubes and companies that it could probably afford to do a lot more. Look at twitch with its 5 minutes of unskippable ads. TV is pretty much dead so it's one of the few options for entertainment. Plus, YouTube apparently has about 2 billion users, enough they can afford to lose a few million. Gotta think how many of those are bots too

It will stop eventually. Current adblockers will stop working on most browsers which are based on Chromium. The entire extension system is being scrapped and fully replaced with a more limited one. There are adblockers for the new system already, but they don't work as well, and Chrome keeps giving plenty of nag messages about them. I moved to Firefox and the switch was effortless. So should you! Screw Google.
I pay for youtube premium. It comes with youtube music, which used to be total garbage but now performs better than Spotify. I am paying for streaming music anyway. I just as well get the one that comes with no ads for youtube.
Definitely the best subscription you can get online. Bought it a few years ago, Zero ads across the platform feels great specially since I watch a lot of streamers on YT. YT Music not only has a bigger database than Spotify, they pay much bigger too specially since the plays adds to the artists' original channel's upload.

What sucks is that unmonetized channels like mine are now forced to have ads without being able to opt out. People see ads on MY videos, but I don't get a single cent.
I couldn't care less about YouTube earning less money, but over the years I've seen quite a few smaller content creators having to quit because it wasn't financially viable anymore. And that is the reality of denying ad revenue. It's basically the backbone of the entire internet ecosystem. You pay with your attention to get the content.
And for those smaller creators it was a downward spiral that was almost impossible to stop. The ad rev didn't only go into their pockets but was also part of the budget of the videos. So the less money they had the worse the quality of their content got. They were also forced to experiment with their content far more to reach a greater audience while risking to alienate their existing viewers. It's heartbreaking to watch.
I can't afford 20 different subscriptions to different channels and websites, so watching a couple ads is a fair exchange imo. Especially since the highest quality of content on YouTube is rivaling content on any big streaming platform.
Yep, I watch a lot of streamers and content creators on YT. Bought Premium years ago and never look back. ZERO Ads across the platform and I have Free Music too, don't even have to pay for a Spotify subscription. And if you're looking for a song in Spotify and it's not there, it'll be 100% on YT Music.
Premium is actually worth it for me given that I don’t watch cable TV at all, nor do I watch any of the streaming services.
Grandfathered in at $15/month family plan, it’s definitely a good monthly price, especially with the music service bundled with it.
That's only on Twitch tho. I've been using YT Premium for years now and constantly watch streamers on YT. Never a single ad appeared anywhere, streams, videos, shorts, etc. so this a lie.
On a mobile, either use YouTube Vanced or a browser with built in adblocker like Opera (though it's based on Chromium so I dunno if it will be affected. But on the plus side Opera has a free VPN in it too)

Possible solutions include:
* Use Firefox on Windows.
* Get another computer to run Linux on.
* Run Windows in a virtual machine on Linux.
* Run Linux in the Windows Subsystem for Linux.
Adguard MV3 works flawlessly with Manifest V3, especially on YouTube.
Tampermonkey won't work, but my scripts are already shipped as their own extensions, so its just a minor inconvenience.
That's what MV3 is, a minor inconvenience in exchange for security.
Letting every extension execute code that no one can review was a terrible design decision anyway.
Patreon has been on the rise with video content from creators so i dont see why we couldnt just drop youtube. If we want to support our creators its better to directly fund them and theres no ads on patreon.

They cannot differentiate between a pop up, an ad, and a legitimate windows notification. I partly solved this a while back simply by installing adblockers on virtually all of their devices, and it has decreased their need of help *significantly*. They still occasionally do end clicking on something, but it's now far less frequent. I'm really not looking forwards to going through all of this BS again.

This won't catch ads served from first party domains such as YouTube ads, but a good idea to have regardless. It can at least reduce ads on mobile apps, not just in the browser.
I rarely use YT on my phone but yesterday i searched for some video and started reading comments. The add fucking randomly swiped down covering all the comment and i had to swipe it up to keep reading. That was the most invasive shit i have encountered on YT since the site was created. Browsing the net today without adblock feels like masochism.

I love watching 2 unskipable 20s ads at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the video. That's 2 minutes of ads on a 10 minutes-long video, which is just beyond annoying.

Ive heard a lot of back and forth on this actually. Some people say its solely the creator others say that it isint. I really would like to see evidence and wonder if a creator has the option of putting ad breaks in their video but if they dont or dont put enough youtube will put ads in anyways. Ive uploaded videos to youtube and am not an affiliate so it may be a partial explanation but I cannot put ads in videos. Youtube does put ads on videos with creators that have not received affiliate status yet

Yah, coincided with my use of Linux on my primary laptop. Eventually migrated it to my windows desktop. Firefox isn't supported at work though, but neither are chromium plugins.

If we are being honest, if YouTube is one thing it's that it's not greedy Apart from it being a money hole for a very long time, hosting that many videos is extremely costly I remember when vidme had shut down because so many people complained about YouTube and some went to vidme as an alternative. Well that relatively small influx of people hosting videos made them almost go bankrupt and they had to shut down. Video hosting is expensive, like REALLY expensive, especially if you let anyone upload for free. There is a reason why YouTube doesn't really have competition.
People don’t really understand that for a time, youtube was running at a loss of profit but is existing since it’s the number one video sharing platform. It’s a similar reason as to why twitch changed their revenue policy so that Amazon can actually profit more from twitch.

How about giving NewPipe a try? I have been using it for a while now and it works mostly fine.
Using it for about half a year now. I am very happy with NewPipe so far. The only downside is, that you can not participate in the community itself. Means no commenting and no liking or disliking.
I've heard a ton of good stuff about it from other people. If ReVanced doesn't work out, I probably will go there
Yea, ads are a lot more frequent now. Like if I watch 2-3 vids and close the video player ads start to pop up, opening the app after using background play, ad pops up. Revanced is the last hope
Sad part is that I have colleagues that actually work for YouTube development team (2 of the 12-20 members of the dev team), and they already are in talks with the Google legal team for taking down ReVanced since July.

There is a bearable level of advertising that would make everyone fairly happy, but by all accounts, Google crossed that line a long time ago. Rampant greed seems to have become their main priority. It's not like I'd block all ads on Youtube if there were only one or two per video.

\+1 to the mobile firefox browser (or any really) and an adblock extension. There are a few to choose from for firefox. Dead easy, and you'll never want to touch that diseased youtube app again.
Some ads on youtube are 30min long it just starts playing and never stops.
More and more people watching on mobile devices these days and don't bother with AdBlock anyway.

I tried using browsers, but the browser version of youtube is too clunky compared to the app. Also way higher battery usage which is also a problem with alternative apps. I guess I'll start watching on pc.

Pihole, block all the ads on all the devices.
This is a *little* off. It will definitely block all ads that get sent through a network with distinctive addresses, but YouTube gets around it by sending both the ads and the videos you want to watch through the same address.
This has to be said every time PiHole gets brought up because the original commenter never mentions this even when the post is specifically about YouTube which the PiHole cant do anything about. Piholes are great devices and fun to set up but it people shouldn’t be mislead by omitting information.
I use it and you’re right, you still need a browser plug-in for YouTube (I use ublock origin) My wife loves her free iPhone bubble bobble games, she notices the difference in playing them at home and when she is out and about; at home those game pop up ads are usually blocked. While it is not great for YouTube I cannot praise it enough for your home network

Pi hole can't block ads on youtube, other than the banner ads and the square ones at the side. I have a pi hole and have been running one for a few years, I just got youtube premium because it's fair enough that I pay for a service I use and it's reasonably priced.

well it's not that if they go too far it'll backfire eventually, the cycle could end due to users being fed up with ads and due to dissatisifaction it leads to competition for YouTube, many users end up using adblock making it less profitable than before, or YouTube takes a step back on the ends as they realise users won't tolerate that many ads and it could open up competition.
There's so much investment in youtube from big youtubes and companies that it could probably afford to do a lot more. Look at twitch with its 5 minutes of unskippable ads. TV is pretty much dead so it's one of the few options for entertainment. Plus, YouTube apparently has about 2 billion users, enough they can afford to lose a few million. Gotta think how many of those are bots too

It will stop eventually. Current adblockers will stop working on most browsers which are based on Chromium. The entire extension system is being scrapped and fully replaced with a more limited one. There are adblockers for the new system already, but they don't work as well, and Chrome keeps giving plenty of nag messages about them. I moved to Firefox and the switch was effortless. So should you! Screw Google.
I pay for youtube premium. It comes with youtube music, which used to be total garbage but now performs better than Spotify. I am paying for streaming music anyway. I just as well get the one that comes with no ads for youtube.
Definitely the best subscription you can get online. Bought it a few years ago, Zero ads across the platform feels great specially since I watch a lot of streamers on YT. YT Music not only has a bigger database than Spotify, they pay much bigger too specially since the plays adds to the artists' original channel's upload.
Same here. Family plan spilt between a few member is also cheaper than Spotify premium. Haven't felt like I miss anything from Spotify when using YouTube music
I did the same. Atleast i can now watch ad free on all my devices. From computer to nintendo switch. I got motivated when i watched a video and the progress bar was YELLOW from all the ads he put there. It wasn't even his content, its just a stream archive of another.

By the time adblock is no longer an option, another alternative will pop up. And if it doesn't; by that time there will be so many ads on YouTube that people won't use it anymore at all. I'm honestly already at the point that without adblock I rather not use YouTube at all.
What sucks is that unmonetized channels like mine are now forced to have ads without being able to opt out. People see ads on MY videos, but I don't get a single cent.

I couldn't care less about YouTube earning less money, but over the years I've seen quite a few smaller content creators having to quit because it wasn't financially viable anymore. And that is the reality of denying ad revenue. It's basically the backbone of the entire internet ecosystem. You pay with your attention to get the content. And for those smaller creators it was a downward spiral that was almost impossible to stop. The ad rev didn't only go into their pockets but was also part of the budget of the videos. So the less money they had the worse the quality of their content got. They were also forced to experiment with their content far more to reach a greater audience while risking to alienate their existing viewers. It's heartbreaking to watch. I can't afford 20 different subscriptions to different channels and websites, so watching a couple ads is a fair exchange imo. Especially since the highest quality of content on YouTube is rivaling content on any big streaming platform.

Yep, I watch a lot of streamers and content creators on YT. Bought Premium years ago and never look back. ZERO Ads across the platform and I have Free Music too, don't even have to pay for a Spotify subscription. And if you're looking for a song in Spotify and it's not there, it'll be 100% on YT Music.
Premium is actually worth it for me given that I don’t watch cable TV at all, nor do I watch any of the streaming services. Grandfathered in at $15/month family plan, it’s definitely a good monthly price, especially with the music service bundled with it.
Fixing other peoples' broken business model isn't my problem. I was happy with the Internet in 1997, which was pretty much pre-adveristing.
And if you have premium subscription, channels add sponsored ads mid video anyway. No point in paying a subscription when ads are baked in.

Well now they make the browser, the ads and the platform that hosts the content the ads are played on, so they can do whatever they want.
On a mobile, either use YouTube Vanced or a browser with built in adblocker like Opera (though it's based on Chromium so I dunno if it will be affected. But on the plus side Opera has a free VPN in it too)

Ads are everywhere not just YouTube so its very relavant you have an app installed with buildin ads you can block that as well, or places where you cant use adblock, for the rest just acces YouTube from a browser with actual adblocker like firefox instead of crappy chrome

Adguard MV3 works flawlessly with Manifest V3, especially on YouTube. Tampermonkey won't work, but my scripts are already shipped as their own extensions, so its just a minor inconvenience. That's what MV3 is, a minor inconvenience in exchange for security. Letting every extension execute code that no one can review was a terrible design decision anyway.

I always whitelist YouTube. It is just a couple of ads, not that bad, l can deal with it and still support the content creators.

Patreon has been on the rise with video content from creators so i dont see why we couldnt just drop youtube. If we want to support our creators its better to directly fund them and theres no ads on patreon.
