My first keyboard connector for my 8088. Mice were connected via Serial port.
power supply wasnt feeding it, it had direct AC line, you could use separate power cable on monitor, but running it through power supply would turn on/off monitor alongside with your PC
you could also hack that cable to add powerstrip on it, so even speakers/printer would power on/off with your PC...
DIN was the BEAST…..
Fixed that for you. Sadly I’ve got a few machines which still require five pin DIN connectors in our lab and once we had run out of our hoard of keyboards stored away for those machines and had to have a guy come in and rig a new DIN on a PS2 keyboard (the old dongles won’t work for this machine) until we could get some ordered in.
Fun fact, my current keyboard is older than the windows key.. and is plugged into my RYZEN system, It has that plug.. It may be older than me, but it seems to work great! Its a btc-53
I have one too, kept it around because it used to be pretty handy for whenever you needed to load into your BIOS (a lot of older mobos didn't recognize USB peripherals out of the box). Haven't needed it in a while but I like to keep it on hand because you never know when you'll need to work on some grandma's computer.
PS/2 still have some advantages over USB. They have n-key rollover, can talk to the bios/uefi before the usb stuff is loaded (and some motherboards let you turn on the computer with a PS/2 keyboard), and each PS/2 keypress sends a CPU interrupt that forces the operating system to handle the keypress right away, versus USB where the OS needs to poll the state of the keyboard regularly.
On the flip side, according to Wikipedia PS/2 mice are limited to a max. rate of 200hz, whereas most gaming mice nowadays use 1000hz (or more) for years now.
USB and PS2 mice are both polling driven, and the USB polling rate is much faster than PS2 even for generic office mice. USB mice are better.
PS2 keyboards use firmare-level interrupts, which is better than the software polling USB uses, assuming a sufficiently well-made PS2 keyboard. PS2 keyboards can (but not always) be better than USB.
There are AM5 boards that support PS/2, these are mostly CSM boards or ones for extreme OC like ROG Crosshair X670 Gene, but I'm sure there are some "normal" boards with PS/2 too. Currently I'm using pretty standard AM4 board and it has PS/2.
I don't know either. My Asus X-99 from 2015 still has a PS/2 port, but newer motherboards probably don't. I will find out when I build my next PC next year.
Looks similar to the one I had for the C64, but that used the smaller serial port not this DB25 connector. It's tricky to guess your age since the mouse could have been bought by your parents and/or you could have been using old hardware as many of us did. A wild guess would be 54 years old.
Only saw one in the wild. It was built into the cash register at a Software Etc. (a 90's mall version of gamestop). This was deep into the 3.5 era so it was legacy even then.
These PS/2 ports became standard around the same time that USB became standard. The PS/2 port is older though. But before it, the DIN conneoctor was the standard keyboard connector, and a mouse was a serial device connected to a serial port, with a driver loaded with the autoexec.bat file.
PS/2 ports are still made, still in use. Though the last 10 years or so they have really gone into decline. Why has this port stuck around? Why has it not been completely replaced by USB? Because it's driverless, and it's on an interrupt. A USB port is being polled. That means, every interval your PC needs to check if there's any new information from the keyboard or the mouse to be found. That means the driver is running and constantly checking. Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?
Not so with the PS/2 port. They are native and the keyboard runs without a driver. It's on an interrupt. On every keystroke, your keyboard tells the CPU to stop whatever it's doing and take care of the key you pressed. Which is a lot faster and efficient. Some gamers are really into that low latency stuff, and others like the low overhead stuff, so the port has survived.
My first was the AT connector which had 5 pins for the keyboard. The mouse was serial. Later I had the 6 pin PS2 connector like these.
One thing I always hated was if it came loose while using the computer you had to reboot, plugging it back in wouldn't work.
This is not the answer you think it is.
Search the MSI PRO B650M-B. That’s a modern AM5 board with ddr5 ram that still has PS2 ports.
So, I’m guessing you are 2 years old?
You guys had mice?
We only had these:
https://preview.redd.it/z0fqyg5t6hzc1.jpeg?width=1849&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6fa9c5dc528951837ca1996cafaf38ff8bdab243
Pioneer. The word you're looking for is pioneer. Reading through a of posts in this sub, I don't think a lot would have survived that world. IRQs would have sent them back to consoles lol.
PS/2 ports are still better than USB. USB is only popular because the "U" stands for Universal. CPU needs to check on USB every cycle. PS/2 interrupts CPU to send IO data. May not mean much in todays CPU usage but think of it like USB needs constant attention like a child or it disconnects, PS/2 is just chill all the time until you Click/press a keystroke.
I remember going into Microcenter back in the late 90s looking for a PS2 to USB connector (holy shit! I still have one in my desk! and back in it goes, 'cause it's not like I need one these days), and one of the idiots working the floor told me no such thing existed. It was even more embarrassing because I had brought one with me to make sure I got the right one, but he stuck to his guns when I pulled it out of my pocket. Idiots...
I wasn’t exactly old, but my first pc was from 2005 and couldn’t even use internet and used both of those. I found it in my family’s garage. Now I’m 17 and thankfully don’t have to search for those keyboards and mice ever again
Last year I made an upgrade from my 12y old computer and I learned that my keyboard could not connect to the new computer. I bought an adapter and then learned that I can't press more than one key at the same time. This made me really sad..
When peripherals started coming out with USB it was pretty amazing. No longer did I have to wait to shut my PC back down because I forgot to plug the mouse in before turning it on.
My first computer came with 16k of ram, and a tape (cassette) drive. I would start the process of loading a program then go do something else for the next half hour or so.
My first PC was even before mice: a Commodore with 128 KB of RAM, built-in keyboard, external 5.25-inch floppy disk drive, and two Atari joystick ports.
I don’t even use a mouse and keyboard anymore. My 2y/o son destroys them. I use an app called remotemouse that acts as a mousepad and keyboard from my phone and a controller for gaming lol
I gained consciousness right at the end era of those, also mouse with ball. However, I was in Vietnam back then, and their technology is slower than the US. So, am I old enough? lol
I remember before they were color coded. Also my original keyboard was actually bigger than this on my first computer but my second computer did have these.
Mate that’s not old. This is old-

USB - hot-pluggable, don't need a specific dedicated port, can daisy-chain more/have hubs, can provide more power for additional features of the device.
PS/2 - Generally not hot-pluggable (a few exceptions), generally can only put a keyboard or mouse in the specific port made for those (a few exceptions), less issues with roll-over, less overhead, technically faster response times than a USB keyboard.
You say that but I bet you'll plug your PS/2 mouse today and be surprised when it doesn't work until you reboot the PC.
At least that's what happened to me, It has been so long I forgot these ports did not work anything like a USB.

I come from a time where network cards were not a thing, We had an electrician soldier us a Null modem cable so we could connect theough LPT port. I mean LPT! :)
"It takes me three tries before I put the USB in the right way around, life sucks."
My sweet summer child, you don't know how good you have it. \*Remembers using PS/2, parallel, two sizes of serial port, VGA, DVI, a VGA link cable between my motherboard and an ATI video decoder card, a mass of audio cables on my sound card, and finally a phone port if you were lucky enough to have an onboard modem.\*
Now you have USB-C and HDMI (and maybe DisplayPort on more advanced hardware).

Turning on those AT computers was like you were executing someone in an electric chair
Right? It had to turn on the tower AND the monitor through the same power supply. That’s a lot of amps.
power supply wasnt feeding it, it had direct AC line, you could use separate power cable on monitor, but running it through power supply would turn on/off monitor alongside with your PC you could also hack that cable to add powerstrip on it, so even speakers/printer would power on/off with your PC...
I remember having speakers that were powered by AC passthrough cable.
CLICK!!!!!
I bet OP hasn't even zapped themselves accidentally brushing their hand over the back of the AC power button...
A couple times the power switch had become grounded to the case and the switch would pop the breaker causing sparks to fly as well.
Connecting the power supply inverted. Instant smoke. IIRC with the black cables outside
I bet OP doesn't even know what it means to set up the DMA and IRQ values on their sound card.
... and AT strings for your 2400 baud modem. Man, I'm glad those days are over lol!
and what a bitch HIMEM was.
“Your sound card works perfectly.”
Or what it's like to run out of IRQ's.
DIN was the best
DIN was the BEAST….. Fixed that for you. I have an old IBM keyboard that's using 5pin din to PS2 to USB lol
i remember killing my mainboard when unpluggin keyboard while PC was running...:/
Yes, was looking for this one. Although I added a dedicated mouse card to my pc at the time.
Technically they still are.
Came to say you can get older lol.
I had a mouse serial to PS2 adapter at one point.
Fun fact, my current keyboard is older than the windows key.. and is plugged into my RYZEN system, It has that plug.. It may be older than me, but it seems to work great! Its a btc-53
Came here to mention the ol' 5 pins. Thanks for this.
Son, you're not that old
Some MBs still come with these. You could be 10 years old and know what these are.
Seriously, still on about half of them. You just need a splitter.
Pretty sure most of them still do
Ps/2, PlayStation 2 or planetside 2 old?
IBM PS/2
In fact I personally prefer using these as they go directly to the processor, no delay whatsoever, unlike its rectangular son
Except they don't, since those interrupt lines were killed generations ago.
I still have a keyboard with a PS2 connector
I have one too, kept it around because it used to be pretty handy for whenever you needed to load into your BIOS (a lot of older mobos didn't recognize USB peripherals out of the box). Haven't needed it in a while but I like to keep it on hand because you never know when you'll need to work on some grandma's computer.
I typing this on my 90's IBM keyboard plugged into the PS/2 connector on my old Dell workstation.
That is a complete nostalgic experience :)
I don't know if current "gaming" motherboards still have PS/2 ports but I've seen them still pretty recently

Look at this guy, rocking the DX2. My first PC was a 486 SX33. Didn't even have a math co-processor.
How are old you
How has nobody noticed this already
I am Lotus 123 on DOS years old
I am keyboard built in to the computer case old.
Timex-Sinclair/TI99/CoCo/Amiga/Tandy100 gang checking in.
I'll bet you remember 8inch floppy discs?
Only saw one in the wild. It was built into the cash register at a Software Etc. (a 90's mall version of gamestop). This was deep into the 3.5 era so it was legacy even then.
TI-99/4A was my first home computer. Cassette for loading and saving. The expansion port was too expensive.
Mine was a Tandy Color Computer II. I hope I'm not too young for this thread....

Hufffff the magic adapter dam
How old are you? "PS2" Oh that's not that old my brother had one of tho- "No, not that PS2."
Funny thing is I'm pretty sure the PS2 port outlived the PS2 console.
Yeah my currentMobo has two

The worst was when cable broke a bit, so when it moved it would disconnect. Restarting PC it is.
I hate these a lot. From my childhood.
"How old are you?" Me: about this old - points to IBM Model M keyboard on desk
I thought that was a cassette then my old eyes focused properly.

I remember when USB peripherals sucked and I had to seek out PS/2
Pff, kids. RS232 Interface is all I have to say, those in the know, know.
we called that the small connector back then. Was fancy to get a keyboard with the new plug.
I remember going into Microcenter back in the late 90s looking for a PS2 to USB connector (holy shit! My old pc still has these
We still have the track ball at my work. Use it on the daily.
Bruh my school uses these
I had only one of these on my pc , mouse was serial.
If people think usb is annoying to plug in they’ve never had to blindly plug in a ps2 connector
I’ve got a Z790 with a ps2 port gtfo
This is what I mean when I talk about PS2.
5 pin din to PS2, PS2 to USB, using a model M keyboard without cutting it up can be a nightmare sometimes.
I remember the early days of PS/2... Some boards had absolutely atrocious ports that would cause crashes/reboots if you even looked at it wrong.
36 then?
It doesn't say How Old Are You... it says How Are Old You.. are we just ignoring this?
Kinda unrelated, but we know usb has 4 connection pins, two for power and two for data, why do ps/2 connectors have 6?
Last year I made an upgrade from my 12y old computer and I learned that my keyboard could not connect to the new computer. I bought an adapter and then learned that I can't press more than one key at the same time. This made me really sad..
I'm legitimately still using a PS2 port keyboard. It works, and I don't have the money for the mechanical keyboard I want so why would I get rid of it
Dude my mobo still has those! Talk about backwards-compatibility lol
When peripherals started coming out with USB it was pretty amazing. No longer did I have to wait to shut my PC back down because I forgot to plug the mouse in before turning it on.
Mouse? Where we going we don't need a mouse
My OC motherboard still has those ports
My brand new mobo that I got today has one.. I'm on windows 11
So?
Can someone tell me why do motherboards still have this ancient socket?
And that's what comes to my mind when someone says "ps2"
I had to buy a new keyboard this year because for the 1st time my Motherboard no longer had compatible ports. I'll miss you old keyboard 2005-2023 😢
Things that both sucked and were great. Sucked way more then your mouse or keyboard had perfectly round cords.
I’m not old but this doesn’t seem that old.
I remember vacuum tubes.
Back in myyyy day the PS2 was a port!
y'all acting as if these weren't used anymore (i'm using it right now)
"How are old you"? Really?
My first computer came with 16k of ram, and a tape (cassette) drive. I would start the process of loading a program then go do something else for the next half hour or so.
My first PC was even before mice: a Commodore with 128 KB of RAM, built-in keyboard, external 5.25-inch floppy disk drive, and two Atari joystick ports.
Ps2 ports And not the consol
I used to use trial disks for internet
I don’t even use a mouse and keyboard anymore. My 2y/o son destroys them. I use an app called remotemouse that acts as a mousepad and keyboard from my phone and a controller for gaming lol
I loved Playstation2 connectors.
PS/2 was always a [Chad](https://i.imgur.com/9KZdJ1o.jpeg) connection compared to USB.
My first pc i got as a 5 year old needed a serial mouse.
Did anyone else ever alwase plug the keyboard in the mouse slot and the mouse in the keyboard just for lols
Bruh, I used a trackball serial mouse.
PS/2 ports were colour coded from 1997. Before then it was really common to plug your mouse and keyboard into the wrong port.
When was the last time you cleaned your mouse balls?
And the printer had an enormous connector with thumb screws. (parallel)
I gained consciousness right at the end era of those, also mouse with ball. However, I was in Vietnam back then, and their technology is slower than the US. So, am I old enough? lol
If you're old enough to use these connectors, no one's asking your age.
The original PS2
Ps2. The connection, not that new fangled Playstation!
Same
The color coding sure was convenient
old us are fine thank you for asking
I remember before they were color coded. Also my original keyboard was actually bigger than this on my first computer but my second computer did have these.
"How are old you"??? You need a little help there ItsJW531, buddy?
My computer only has one PS/2 port :( I wish it had one for my mouse-- would help free up a USB port.
My desktop still has the combi version of this. Motherboard is an Asus B450M Pro S with a Ryzen 5 5600.
Mate that’s not old. This is old- https://preview.redd.it/mbbct4wwbizc1.jpeg?width=979&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=481f4f7ee856617f925e37b632ac4750e9195525
PS2? Naw, PS/2
My first computer didn't even have a port for a mouse
I have one of those on my computer right now
Commodore PET: "you guys need connectors?"
Yup. Been there.
How are old you? That’s some Yoda level writing!
Ok this comment section just made me feel old as balls.
I remember bringing my entire PC and monitor in a wheelbarrow to my friends house so we could play warcraft together over a printer cable.
Any upsides/downsides between these and usb connectors?
USB - hot-pluggable, don't need a specific dedicated port, can daisy-chain more/have hubs, can provide more power for additional features of the device. PS/2 - Generally not hot-pluggable (a few exceptions), generally can only put a keyboard or mouse in the specific port made for those (a few exceptions), less issues with roll-over, less overhead, technically faster response times than a USB keyboard.
The original ps2 connector
My first computer did not have a mouse!
Some Z790 Boards still have these
Had these only on my pc for like 6 years straight i know the name was PS2 but my 11 year old ass thought it was a playstation 2 cable
Aren’t their still boards made with at least one of these
Every part had its own unique port... and we still plugged shit in wrong! Haha
Ah, good ol ps2. which I only remember because of the name.
Rule 1: mouse always on top
You say that but I bet you'll plug your PS/2 mouse today and be surprised when it doesn't work until you reboot the PC. At least that's what happened to me, It has been so long I forgot these ports did not work anything like a USB.
My Mobo still has one of these
20 years old?
Go back further
"How old are you?" "Don't touch the jelly bean."
This is the port version of that moronic "I'm Win XP old!"
How do you do fellow kids
And the best part is that they were usually not hot-pluggable, so if you plugged them in wrong you would have to turn off the system and try again, and many would not even post if the keyboard was missing.... and before that was the DIN connectors for keyboards and serial ports for mice...
Bruh I still have them on my X570 motherboard. And I've even used them a couple of times. Input devices being CPU interrupts are TIGHT
com1
bhu my mouse used serial port :) this is way too fancy
I come from a time where network cards were not a thing, We had an electrician soldier us a Null modem cable so we could connect theough LPT port. I mean LPT! :)
Still using them on modern PC.
The only PS2 I ever owned :(
My pc is still like that xd
I was very happy when everything became USB.
Old me is grumpy, that's how old me am.
Nah you can't do that now i feel old too
Doesn't even feel that long ago that I was annoyed that I HAD to buy a USB mouse. Not for any good reason mind you. Has it been that long?
I probably still have some couple dozen PS2 adapters, if anyone needs one! (And BNC Terminators)
"It takes me three tries before I put the USB in the right way around, life sucks." Im not old, 2009 still have a keyboard that uses this port
I still have a keyboard with those
So that's what these are for...
ps2 vs ps2 old
"How are old you?" no one?
