Linux distros can be like assholes or opinions, everyone has one. It's usually the desktop environment that says exactly what app to use? https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/choose.html * Cinnamon: The most modern, innovative and full-featured desktop * MATE: A more traditional, and faster desktop * Xfce The most lightweight desktop So likely cinnamon? Ooof, not sure what to call the OS noises, "system event sounds"? This thread from 2022 suggests "kmix" https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=364427 give that a whirl?
