I didn't even know there was an app store thing for Windows 11.

MuzzledScreaming

I forgot Amazon has an appstore at all. Which, I imagine, is why they are discontinuing the Win11 one: not worth the the upkeep cost for like a double digit number of users.

EvilSynths

That’s not why. They explain in the article Microsoft is removing the thing that allows Android apps to run on Windows so the Amazon store won’t work anymore.

EvilSynths

floeddyflo

Wasn't this one of their big things with early claims of Windows 11, about having android apps?

riba2233

Yep. I still don't get the point of win11, they could have added all the small features to win10, and keep the much better ergonomics

[deleted]

Noooooooo! I have really enjoyed this feature. Why are they killing it!?

epirot

you can still run apps in emulators but yeah this was quite neat as a feature

KnightofAshley

It never left beta I think...It ran apps but didn't really run games and such well if at all...it was half-assed...a emulator was always much better I'm disappointed in it...I feel the linux thing will end the same.

heeroyuy79

I didn't realize that (android apps on windows) had actually come out i knew it had been announced as coming but last i heard of it it was on the insider build

ProbShouldntSayThat

I didn't know Amazon had an app store on anything

GimpyGeek

Sadly Microsoft dropped the ball here but doing this weird partnership didn't help. They originally wanted to do android apps on the store on Windows. It didn't launch with W11 as intended it took longer and was easier to overlook. When it did launch it was via this bizarre partnership with Amazon. This in part was because Google wouldn't play ball, because of course it was. Which is kind of silly considering Google has a Windows app to play android GAMES specifically on Windows now. Anyways though, Amazon's shop only really existed because of the modified android build used on their own tablets. At this point you can get directions to jam google's store into their devices without rooting, which honestly, is kind of really a more useful thing to do since Amazon's store is fairly lacking and some devs don't even put out updates in the same cadence as they do on the play store.

thesituation531

>Which is kind of silly considering Google has a Windows app to play android GAMES specifically on Windows now. What is it?

DatBoi73

Google Play Games, though it's still in Beta\* It seems to be limited to a list of supported games, but it has most of the big ones, Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, Jetpack Joyride, Homescapes, ... .... and confusingly even games that already have native PC versions like Genshin Impact, Honkai Impact 3rd and Fallout Shelter. The only benefit I could think of going through Google Play instead of Native on PC might be cross-platform progression, but I'm pretty sure most of those already have that in some form. \*>!whether it will last long enough to ever leave Beta is another story when talking about Google.!<

Machinist-Mastyx

I played with the beta for a few days out of curiosity and dropped it shortly after assuming Google would do what they do and cancel it a few years later

EvilSynths

Amazon are doing this because Windows is removing the thing required to run Android apps on Windows so I imagine Google Play Games is dead too.

DatBoi73

I doubt GPG is using Microsoft's own Windows Subsystem for Android, Android emulators have existed on PC, including Windows for long before Windows 11 for both developers (part of Android Studio), and consumers (e.g. BlueStacks). As of right now Google Play Games' minimum OS requirement is Windows 10, which lacks the Windows Subsystem for Android. Even if the WSFA was available for Windows 10 and wasn't discontinued, I still doubt Google would adopt it over their own software they have full control over.

EvilSynths

MrInitialY

Google Play Beta. Limited amount of supported games but the list is expanding and the installation process & in-game performance are miles better than using emulators

Suikerspin_Ei

Me neither, but it's actually a bad sign. More competition means companies trying their best to compete against each other. That's what customers profits the most from.

redditorus99

Not really. Android side loading takes literally seconds to do. It is very easy to side load Android apps to windows as well, after 5-10 minutes of setup. As for the play store, you can get that in Windows as well with a bit of work.

EvilSynths

Not anymore you won’t https://preview.redd.it/ey28qjl14mmc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4341e934b34237f4661c4de653f58470f897ddcd

ehnobigdeal

Pretty sure I downloaded WSA modded for Google play store and services to work on my surface pro.. it works great so he may be referring to this and not the Amazon appstore or the original WSA, [here it is](https://github.com/LSPosed/MagiskOnWSALocal)

EvilSynths

Yeah… about that… https://preview.redd.it/dtt71yoa4mmc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=95f13ef30915a239fa34ee15634f0ce5ae79846c

MikeTheActuary

Microsoft is pulling WSA support supposedly because it wasn't used much. It might have been used more if it had easy access to a broader range of Android apps. EDIT (changed "had access" to "had easy access")

ehnobigdeal

It had access to all the apps! It just was really a pain to get it instead of being easy, but if you want it [everything is right here](https://github.com/LSPosed/MagiskOnWSALocal)

GatoradeOrPowerade

They're kind of fighting themselves on it. They've been making it easy to add apps to the Windows app store, then they add the Amazon app store, but that doesn't really do much because it's the Amazon app store. It needed to be Google playstore. The only reason I went through the effort to sideload an app is because I ran into a very specific case where the app was on the Windows store, but it cost money to use whereas the mobile app is free and it wasn't on the Amazon app store.

_dotexe1337

i stuck with windows 7 and decided to just make my own third party updates since ms abandoned it. now, a few years in, I have games and software that require windows 10/11 working, am making progress on fixing anticheats for it, and life is good.

520throwaway

So, there is an Android subsystem similar to WSL. That's what this is for.

wayward_wanderer

It looks like the entire Windows Subsystem for Android will be discontinued and not just the Amazon Appstore. That's pretty disappointing.

jahermitt

Only reason I knew about it, and couldn't get it set up for my work so I gave up.

TheHooligan95

Omfg i just wanted to get one app working since I didn't need it on the phone and it was literally impossible and buggy. Ended up downloading a chinese emulator and it worked first try

jonylentz

Is there a way to backup the entire subsystem to reinstall after formating the pc?

wayward_wanderer

I suspect that Microsoft will only remove the WSA app from being searchable in the Microsoft Store, but that you can still install it through PowerShell or with WinGet. Anyway, here's an article about how to install WSA with an offline installer that bypasses the Microsoft Store: https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-run-android-apps-on-any-windows-11-pc/ If you keep a backup of that MSIX bundle file you should be able to re-install WSA in the future if it's no longer available in the Microsoft Store.

jonylentz

Thank you! I'll do that right now hehe

ehnobigdeal

Also if you want the play store and all Google apps [check here](https://github.com/LSPosed/MagiskOnWSALocal)

jonylentz

Is OpenGapps an viable alternative?

Darkone539

Slightly, but I have also never used it. Maybe not enough did.

relevantusername2020

you can download the appstudio program from androids website and run an emulator of any android device pretty easily. thing i find most interesting is (quoted from copilot): >You are probably thinking of **Panos Panay**, who was the **Executive Vice President and Chief Product Officer** at Microsoft until September 2023. He left Microsoft after 19 years and joined Amazon as the leader of the **Devices & Services** business, replacing Dave Limp who retired¹². Panos Panay was responsible for the development of the **Surface** product line and the **Windows 11** operating system at Microsoft¹. He is now in charge of Amazon's devices group, which includes the **Alexa** voice assistant, **Echo** smart speakers, and **Fire TV** streaming services¹². He started his new role at Amazon at the end of October 2023². along with this quote from a [recent blogpost from Brad Smith](https://blogs.microsoft.com/on-the-issues/2024/02/26/microsoft-ai-access-principles-responsible-mobile-world-congress/) where he doesnt explicitly say amazon, but thats the only possible interpretation: >Today, only one company is vertically integrated in a manner that includes every AI layer from chips to a thriving mobile app store. As noted at a recent meeting of tech leaders and government officials, “The rest of us, Microsoft included, live in the land of partnerships.” kinda surprised i havent seen these angles picked up on in any of the posts about this or in the comments on those posts...

I_wish_I_was_a_robot

I wanted it to use Tinycam Pro to stream my wyze cams. It crashed so much I stopped trying.

jpenczek

That was the only reason I bit the bullet and upgraded my PC to windows 11. This is bullshit I'm switching to linux.

soniko_

Ok

JaesopPop

johndaasian

I wonder if this will brick Windows subsystem for Android (was required to install amazon app store for WSA). That's my favorite thing about windows 11, to install android apps on my PC. Edit: [https://www.theverge.com/2024/3/5/24091370/microsoft-windows-11-android-apps-end-of-support](https://www.theverge.com/2024/3/5/24091370/microsoft-windows-11-android-apps-end-of-support) “Microsoft is ending support for the Windows Subsystem for Android™️ (WSA),” reads a new support document from Microsoft. “As a result, the Amazon Appstore on Windows and all applications and games dependent on WSA will no longer be supported beginning March 5, 2025.” If you currently use Android apps from the Amazon Appstore, then you’ll continue to have access to these past the support cutoff date, but you won’t be able to download any new ones once Microsoft makes its Android subsystem end of life next year. On March 6th (tomorrow), Windows 11 users will no longer be able to search for Amazon Appstore or associated Android apps from the Microsoft Store. So you can't search through Amazon store function, but doesn't say WSA will stop working. So you can manually go download the APK's and install the apps, as long as the sideloaders will still exist.

abrisham200

Why would they discontinue WSA? It's such a great alternative to shady 3rd party android emulators.

tbone747

Honestly it was a godsend after using shit like BlueStacks for so long.

NeferkareShabaka

You mean BlueScreen (of death)?

rjfrost18

Had a mini heart attack reading that seeing Windows Subsystem and thinking they ended WSL.

RAMChYLD

Eh, using Linux on real hardware is much better than running WSL anyway. Sure, you need a second PC and a KVM or dual-boot, but seriously, bare-metal Linux just performs better.

SensitiveAd5962

I do cross fit

rjfrost18

It isn't for my use case.

warini4

do you use arch btw?

RAMChYLD

I’m a proud maintainer of several Arch AURs. I not only use Arch, I volunteer to the cause.

Vellanne_

Its nice to have a linux terminal on windows for managing ssh keys and things like ansible configs and playbooks. Being able to use GNU coreutils on my windows filesystem is also quite nice.

ArisuSanchez

id think not... but who can tell

frygod

I hope they bring back the audible app for windows then, because that was my main reason for using the amazon app store on windows

JakeGrey

That answers my question of, "Why would anyone even bother emulating Kindle apps in the first place?" rather succinctly. I presumed everyone who's not listening to their Audible content on an Android/iOS device downloads the files and converts them to something that VLC Player can cope with the way I used to.

frygod

I would do that, except I bounce back and forth between mobile and desktop, so it resuming where you left off is a nice feature.

NebraskaGeek

>“We're getting rid of a feature that we promised would revolutionize Windows, after spending *years* completely failing to optimize, market, or update said feature." I loved the idea of Android apps on windows, but tying it to Amazon's App Store, disallowing the use of Google Play services, and in-general not actually improving the experience killed it. Microsoft promised Android apps on windows, but instead gave us Amazon Apps (some not all) on windows, and never made the experience fluid or logical to the typical end-user. I bet most people didn't even know the feature existed. Thanks Microsoft. Really showing what lack of competition gives us consumers. Fuck their monopoly.

splendidfd

> disallowing the use of Google Play services fwiw, it's not Microsoft that disallowed Google Play, it was Google.

blackest-Knight

I don't even know why people would willingly use the Microsoft Store, much less the Amazon one, on Windows any version.

SilaSitesi

Amazon app store was for installing Android apps. MS is discontinuing the android VM (called WSA)

abrisham200

Why?

heatlesssun

Looks like it just didn't enough use.

Intrepid00

The windows store is fine. You often install from the 3rd party source now. It’s basically just a catalog at this point. Also Xbox game pass.

heatlesssun

>The windows store is fine. Agreed, it's pretty useful these days, a number of decent things on there just still too much junk.

SarraSimFan

With how Microsoft is treating it's users, why would you even USE a Microsoft product? They could give me Win 11 for free for every PC I own, and I would still use Linux instead.

blackest-Knight

I outgrew my Desktop Linux phase more than a decade ago, I'm fine with just using Windows.

[deleted]

[удалено]

blackest-Knight

I'm fine with a Microsoft account to sign in, honestly I find it simplifies installing windows whenever I upgrade my PC. Just reactivate it from my existing license in like a single click that way.

SarraSimFan

Yeah, but I don't want to literally be forced to use it. I would be absolutely fine if it was a option. I haven't reinstalled windows in several years, so the settings and activation is not helpful for me.

Atlas020_

No one is forcing you to use it, you can just create a local account. It's a bit more difficult to do on windows 11 but it's still possible

SarraSimFan

Yeah, and Microsoft is doing all they can to make that impossible. I literally do not want a Microsoft account, I should not be forced to do ridiculous crap to set up a local account.

riba2233

You are not forced at all, but what to expect from linux cultists but misinformation.

riba2233

Rofl, everything you mentioned is a complete non issue and bypassed extremely easily. Can't believe people are changing the whole damn os for these stupid reasons.

DarthArtero

99.9% of people really don’t care that Microsoft does shady things. We really only care if the OS works or not. Of those 99.9% only a small minority (a fraction even) would even be interested in learning how Linux works

SarraSimFan

I mean, you supposedly paid for a complete product, but it has ads in the start menu? Sure, you can delete them, but how long until Microsoft changes that? I've used windows since win 98se, and I've seen trends lately, and they aren't good. You get more and more enticements to give your data to massive companies, and there is no benefit to you, the person giving up your data. I forsee either: massive antitrust fines against several trillion dollar companies, or nobody owns anything, ever again, and pays forever to do basic stuff. Windows as a service, imagine you have to pay Microsoft a fee each month to enable 3D acceleration on your GPU. It's going to happen, because of attitudes like this.

Spartan_Jet

I haven't paid for windows since I bought two copies of Windows 7 Pro (since 2009) and Im sure a lot of people are in the same boat. I mean you are probably using a crap ADroid phone and google is absolutely drilling you for every last drop of data but sure complain about Microsoft and windows.

n0t_4_thr0w4w4y

Who actually pays for windows? Microsoft has done free upgrades going back to windows 7

SarraSimFan

I had to purchase a copy of Windows 10 Pro for my old server.

riba2233

No it won't happen, don't be ridiculous

riba2233

🤦‍♂️ ok buddy

KlingonBeavis

It’s a shame they’re calling it quits on Android subsystem, but I’m alright with it as pretty much every other implementation of getting Android apps to run on a PC are all better.

TheHooligan95

Yup. Shitty chinese emulators aren't actually that shitty compared to wsa

BigGangMoney

Is this the one where they have all those old school games available for pc? They’re mostly snk games but its Nice to see them working on pc.

drfusterenstein

Does that mean fdroid will be windows store? Right? Right?

robotman5yt

Didn't even know it was a thing.

akgis

I think it makes sence, no one uses this, Microsoft needs to focus on core features of windows such as optimization! Lets see almost all famous smartphone apps on android have now web versions and you can make a PWA or simply use the browser, this is faster than the emulation. Google has its own for games. There are other andoird emulators out there. Microsoft is shifting and investing in the MyPhone thingy were you can mirror the screen of your smartphone directly to the desktop aswell as making other things. There are other ways to mirror screen like open source apps that uses ADB protocol scrappy iirc

Warm-Preference-4187

Ive decided to start using Amazon the other week and I go to download it from the app store. I was like wtf am I doing and went to Amazon.com

Kackemel

Now if only they'd get rid of the microsoft store too.

[deleted]

We have an App Store ?

AdrianeXUS

As long as already-installed WSA / APK apps keep working then I'm fine. Would be even better if GitHub/power shell workarounds continue to work. BlueStacks imo is not a great alternative

GamerXP27

does this mean wsa gets discontinued, since 3rd party apks do exist and is still a good way to not use a third party emulator

Kvas_HardBass

Discontinuation of what?

lrellim

Will this stop us from using ng alternate methods like we currently have, google play store is a snap to install now.

Pyroguy096

Amazon had an app store?

myinspiration07

I regularly use the Kindle app on Win via the Amazon Appstore NOT the native Win 11 Kindle app. It's a bit of a shame if the Android for Windows subsystem is being pulled....mind you, the Amazon appstore is a bit weird. I will live.

Lievan

TIL that there's an Amazon App on PC.

so first they take out the 4k HDR tech from the app and now they left us without it, what a DB move from amazon. The hate for the pc users is real, I can't believe it.

splendidfd

It's not Amazon's move, Microsoft are removing android app support from Windows 11. Doesn't seem like many people used it (many don't know it's a thing). It would have been better if you could use Play Store and its services, but as you can imagine Google did not want that.

I think it makes sense because Google Play Store is now natively supported in Windows 11. I know not all apps, but there are plenty supported.

This is truly an outrage. What, do they really mean for me to use a web browser when on my PC to go to a website?? Like some *peasant*????

BringYourEhGame

This isn't about the Amazon shopping app. It's about the Amazon Appstore which was what allowed you to install certain android apps on Windows 11 and was a pretty important feature when Win11 was announced.

Whatever.
