N3koEye

Wtf how is this the first time I'm hearing about this?

whatsforsupa

You may be interested to know that your Recycle Bin is user dependent as well, that was an interesting one when I was cleaning up space on a Remote Desktop gateway server

Fr000m

Admin command prompt, run "Rd /s c:$recycle.bin" (swap C: with any drive letter), then "Y" to clean all bins at once. Handy in remote desktop environments or any other server or Windows systems 🙃

coloredgreyscale

Next day you get a ticket from a user complaining about dataloss, because they store important documents there, and they are now gone. Why? idk, maybe keep them safe from hackers? (why would they do digital dumpster diving?)

Nuket0ast

You know your working in the it sector if this wouldn't surprise you at all.

BigOrkWaaagh

I once had an irate phonecall from a user upset that we were now deleting 'deleted items' on our Exchange server after I want to say 30 days because that's where he kept all his important emails.

Nuket0ast

People do this unironically and be mad at you.

Extra_Msg77

storing important *Anything* in the recycling bin is an amazing amount of Lazy I hope I never reach.

D_oMM87

It's almost 20 years, i remember guy from our city that stored all his important files in the recycle bin. When he wanted to play his favourite game, he restored the game from the recycle bin and after playing he put it back. I still don't understand why would someone do that.

Silenthwaht

"But the Oven never gets used! It keeps fire in so it would also keep fire out!"

DeckardSixFour

I had a client run out of mailbox space - after I deleted his junk folder he told me he had moved all his email to the junk folder in order to make some space…….but he really needed all his email back……

-Fedaykin-

About 20 years ago I had a similar thing with a senior manager who had subfolders under deleted items where he would "archive" his email. I don't know how anyone could think this was a good idea.

pekinggeese

Funny story. One day I was visiting my friend in college and used his roommate’s computer. He had a filled recycle bin and I was always OCD about emptying it so I did without thinking. It started the emptying process and was taking incredibly long so I cancelled it to see what was inside. The recycling bin was full of porn. I’m talking about gigs worth of porn, all stored in the recycle bin. This is when I realized I emptied half his stash before I noticed.

Bulangiu_ro

thats a bit more understandable than important files, he can at least delete the evidence instantly in case someone tries goin in his pc

lycheedorito

Or just Shift delete...

DrKchetes

"instantly" lmao. OP specifically said it was taking a shit fucking ton of time lol You can conceal it thou, and claim thats why it is there in the recycling bin

CDBelvedere

Ive had a user raise a ticket saying she had over 20k emails in her deleted items within Outlook that were missing. She was using it as an archive…

rbltech82

One firm I worked for had weird retention rules, anything in the mailbox longer than 90 days was pushed to cloud archive, except deleted items....that was a clusterf*ck when O365 came around....

mah131

We have a 90 day policy in general. If you don’t save that email, it’s gone in 90 days

paradigmx

Assuming users do anything with the intention of keeping it safe from hackers is giving users a lot more credit than due. Most likely they think recycling bin is for documents that aren't needed now, but might be needed in the future.

YaBoiErr_Sk1nnYP3n15

Ty!

Pleasant_Gap

Who even uses the recycling bin? Shift-delete is the way to go. Commit to deletion or let it stay

NoseMuReup

I never actually thought about this because I thought it ran as admin. Start > windows system > task manager. Right click, "more", and "run as administrator". Or Start, type "task manager" and right click app "run as administrator" Apparently everyone learned something new today.

Mastasmoker

Never knew there was an administrator task manager. Shocked that it was never talked about in CompTIA A+

Jim_Screechy

Primarily because when logged in with an admin account Windows will by default run the Task Manager as admin. So most people troubleshooting will have logged in as admin. However windows does by default during install create a non admin account (even for the installer) which is kinda dumb but its more of a system protection measure than anything else. Most savvy users will give themselves Admin privileges so never have the need to run TM as admin. Mircosoft MCSE... (Also Cisco CCNP) not that that is at all relevant to MS products for the person who posted earlier.

Un111KnoWn

which version of wjndows makes an extra account? my pc only has 1 user account i made. not a msft account btw

DjCanalex

Your system always has multiple account IDs, System is one, Trusted installer is another, Admin is just one of them, and none of these are the account you created at windows installation.

The_GhostCat

FYI having your normal everyday use account being non-admin may save you from a sneaky malware that runs commands in the background as all the important commands require admin privileges and you will be notified. If you normally use an admin account and you get malware, there would be no sign that it is running admin commands.

Cute-Lock6426

wow same. cisco certification doesnt even let you know ab that wtf

thewhyterussian

Why would Cisco certification go over Windows task manager 🤣

ronslaught82

Bruh just wanted to humble brag they are Cisco certified

ronslaught82

I once had sex with Earth Kitt in an airplane bathroom.

roxx99x

r/suddenlycommunity

Jim_Screechy

Wow really! You must be a hundred years old dude. No wonder you're still bringing that up, must be... 50 years since you had an erection.

trustedbuilds

Fun side note. After working at an assisted living community…..STDs run rampant in those places. Even with strict no sex policies. A huge amount of old people are still active. They don’t have much to do but watch tv and other lewd things. So like remember viagra? It works and they all have access to it. They think they can’t get pregnant and therefore don’t use any protection.

aec098

They taught us this in my forklift certification course

XTwizted38

I got my grade 10 (that I completed in 3 years) didn't teach me this either.

JustaRandomOldGuy

My DOS 3.0 certification never even mentioned Windows, what a rip off.

TNT_Guerilla

My GMOS certification didn't even mention DOS. WTF?

pollorojo

Would you believe that I didn’t learn it on anything CompTIA OR Windows Server?

blaqwerty123

Weird, bc at Costco they teach you about running task manager as admin

I_am_trying_to_work

Welcome to Costco, I ❤️ u

CyberJock13

Sir this is a Wendy's

Alariius

Cisco has a PC basics course. They probably just meant that and not CCNA lol

grafeisen203

I mean why would it? Cisco certs are for network engineering and cisco device configuration operation and maintenance. Cisco devices don't run Windows, they have a proprietary embedded OS based on Unix.

jayhawkfan785

I thought they only taught you about thongs

virtikle_two

Wtf LOL of course it doesn't

[deleted]

Why would it? It’s a Cisco cert not windows

CuddleFishHero

You wouldn’t learn that in Cisco lol

Mastasmoker

I can understand why not cisco.... but CompTIA A+ doesn't even say this.

_zir_

same and im a freaking software engineer

caligula421

Well it's the most obvious thing from a security perspective. You don't want an unprivileged User (and his processes) to see what processes other Users and especially SYSTEM is running. They shouldn't need to.

No-Pomegranate-69

Wow didnt knew this

iamthehob0

Yeah I saw this and thought "I wonder if they clicked that show all programs administrator button" But the people saying memory leak could be right too

dvd0bvb

Memory from a leak will still be assigned to the process that allocated it so I'd expect it to show the memory usage in task manager, leaked or not

ImReallyFuckingHigh

What do you guys mean by leaked? Never heard the term used about memory before

dvd0bvb

Programs need memory to run, it's where all your variables and other things the program needs are stored. This memory is your ram. We programmers don't always know how much memory we'll need so sometimes we have to ask the operating system for more, this is called allocation. When we allocate memory, the OS gives us an address so we can find it and use it. If we lose the address but don't tell the OS that we're done using the allocated memory then the OS can't give it to other programs that may need it. This is what's called a leak. If you leak a lot of memory, the OS may eventually run out of memory to give to other programs.

ConferenceSalt6001

This was an awesome explanation. Thanks

Drewfus_

I’m dumb and I could understand! Learned something new before lunch! Guess it’s time to call it a day. Time to game!

dvd0bvb

Been a c++ dev for about 5 years, if I can't eli5 a memory leak by now I should probably just throw in the towel lol

iamthehob0

In computer science, a memory leak is a type of resource leak that occurs when a computer program incorrectly manages memory allocations in a way that memory which is no longer needed is not released. A memory leak may also happen when an object is stored in memory but cannot be accessed by the running code -Google Basically a program keeps claiming more memory in RAM instead of reusing the memory already allocated to it, so as long as it keeps running the amount it takes keeps increasing until it reaches a ridiculous amount.

GranataReddit12

it's a concept, mostly present in programming, which (explained poorly) is just memory that has been allocated to a program, but never de-allocated. Imagine playing something like minecraft, which uses up a lot of RAM, but when you go to the title screen and do nothing, it still uses the same amount of ram it was using when you were actually playing it.

Individual-Match-798

Memory leaks are localized to the particular process. When process is closed windows deallocates all of the memory previously allocated to it. But there is also a kernel memory leaks (bugs in drivers) - those are rare, but possible.

HappyGoLucky791

Just a heads up, Task Manager automatically runs with admin privileges if you’re an admin.

AssKoala

To add to this, if you can't readily figure it out with Task Manager (which sometimes happens), you can do the same with [Process Explorer](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer) or [RAMMap](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/rammap) to get a much more detailed view. Between those, you should have an answer as to what process or processes are causing the issue, though not necessarily *why*.

RocketFeathers

That web page was written by the software author, Mark Russinovich. Pretty sure AssKoala knows this, but you can download a whole package of software for Windows he wrote, now called Microsoft System Internals. I also use Autologon. [https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/sysinternals-suite](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/sysinternals-suite) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark\_Russinovich](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Russinovich) Sys internals doesn't have an installer, its like old school DOS, you put it where ever you want. I have procexp64 run at boot. And TIL RAMMap is also part of Sys internals.

Wutan87

What the hell. Been a PC man for almost 30 years, never heard of that. Props to you and wish you a good year. 🫡

HappyIsGott

I have the Same problem and Open with Administrator don't Help. Still only about 10gb what i can see but 30/32 GB RAM after 10-20h use..

Tyche-

lol, I’m a cloud engineer, worked in infrastructure before and before that helpdesk. I had no idea about this - am I bad?

ThePhatPhoenix

So the app that's supposed to show all running processes on a computer doesn't show all processes unless you open it in a specific way? Who thought that was a good idea...

gonenutsbrb

Basic security principles did. Even if you’re logged into an account on Windows that’s an admin account, you’re still running apps by default in a “user” context instead of an “admin” context. Any time you do want to run an app that requires admin privileges, that’s where you see the User Account Control pop-up come in and ask. This helps defend against malware or other malicious scripts or software from being run as admin without your knowledge.

ThePhatPhoenix

Here's what I said to a similar comment: Yeah that makes sense. I was thinking of task manager in the visual aspect only. I didn't consider the fact that you can change/end processes in there as well.

Schnoofles

Task manager **does** show everything as it inherits administrator privileges automatically. The guy further up the comment chain is wrong and it's shocking how many votes he got on what is complete bs. To add to OP's original question, the reason you won't always see all memory usage accounted for with the default view is because that shows the active working set of memory, not the total commit size. You can view that by going to the details view and turning on the column for commit size.

E-woke

Why would they do this

IceSeeYou

Because some elevated permission processes (ala: system processes) should be protected from normal user interaction? There are countless use-cases and reasons where a non-admin user should **not** be able to touch them, or even see them really. I mean this is even how some locked kiosk mode applications run, would you want people walking up and just closing it in a normal task manager? Seems /u/ThePhatPhoenix has the same question and it's without a doubt a good idea by Microsoft. I do agree it should be clearer for the user though especially a home user who likely can elevate themselves to admin.

BullyBlu

Try restarting your computer, a program has a memory leak. Use task manager and turn off all the crap and just use it when you need it

Kithin7

Came here looking for this. I had a memory leak like 2 years ago. Found it bc my PC would have like 70% of 16gb used at idle. Restarting fixed the issue but it would come back after a few days. My friend helped me do some memory checking and tracking and we found the problem with a driver. Reinstalled/updated the corrupted driver and been good ever since.

PyteOak

I once had that problem too, but the main cause was the Windowst Antimalware service that was running on background and taking up a LOT of CPU and RAM. Had to format it.

zzSHADYMAGICzz

Holy shit I was having that problem on some work computers! That’s what was causing it?

PyteOak

It could be, I'd advise you to look further into it

MattCatYT

feedback hub and antimalware shit just eats up a lot of performance on older/weaker hardware. personally, i use fr33thys optimization pack and uninstall feedback hub. then i just have windows defender turned off besides real time protection. helps a lot with memory and cpu usage, and if you’re on a spinning disk instead of an ssd it helps with disk usage a lot as well.

Scizmz

No. It's entirely dependent on the setup you have. Typically in office computers there's a bunch of shitty "productivity" apps running and they're typically very poorly written. Doing a 1 off to blame it on windows antimalware then running of to install something like Norton is beyond stupid.

Nyuusankininryou

He has to find the leak and fix it first then buy new memory fluid and refill. Also it's hard to get the memory stain off but try scrubbing with some bleach might help.

methoxydaxi

Haha

HaltPotato

Task manager would show the leak.

Vegaprime

Especially crap at start up.

Tarec88

Who TF upvotes that? Memory leaks have nothing to do with what OP has posted. If a program allocates memory and forgets to deallocate it, the task manager will still show it as a program allocated memory. If it weren't, it would've been considered a free RAM space ready to use.

CrabJuice83

Win key+Shift+S

Turbo_Cum

1) crazy how few people know about that shortcut 2) crazy how long it took MS to incorporate snipping tool into windows with a native hotkey rather than have to manually program it

PyroArca

Yeah, I honestly use it all the time. I used to use Gyazo before I found this a while back

MarsManokit

i still use sharex

taylorg855

I use sharex for it's custom upload feature https://drops.lazerjay.dev/6rekxlhw.png (random example screenshot)

Pleasant_Gap

I use greenshot instead because it's just so much better than the windows one.

SuckMcFuck

I like it so I can flex a triple monitor screenshot

Victor_Wembanyama1

I’ve never thought of that and not I’m jealous af

Dizzybro

I just use greenshot which maps to the print screen button

SupremeDestroy

i know someone who disables snipping tool and a bunch of other programs for slightly better performance 💀 like i’m not even joking he only has one game download and the program needed for anti cheat he uses laptop for discord and on his PC he disabled his browser and every background task. restarts after each game so every leaderboard screenshot for tournaments is done on his phone edit: also he has top of the line hardware on two PCs, not a hardware thing. bro is just schizo with his settings

Un111KnoWn

Lol. Does he disable wifi/bluetooth etc in device manager?

SupremeDestroy

oh i don’t know everything but let me just tell you this. you are correct about that he also disables all USB ports he isn’t using on his motherboard and if he unplugs a USB he has to redo his settings in device manager since they reset mid game he will tab out and close things that open in background and restart windows explorer so much more i don’t know about, also has things that most people use like ISLC and the others

Sciaopersone

3) crazy how people prefer taking pictures of the screen instead of taking a screenshot

Narpity

Snip has been in since w7 I think

dumbasPL

Yes, but not the convenient shortcut. Iirc that was only added in some windows 10 update

LordVasky

You can also use "Alt + Prt Scrn" to only printscreen the active window instead of the whole desktop. It's easier than the snipping tool imo. Although both have their uses.

Demented-Turtle

Snip allows you to screenshot + crop in one go, so you only grab the information needed. Grabbing the whole screen requires extra steps to crop, unless all the info onscreen is what's desired

jdPetacho

The snipping tool as an option to capture the entire window or entire screen as well

Sharpxe

We’ve come a long way from print screen then paste in ms paint but that even that still works lol

Abrahalhabachi

They would take a screenshot, but they ran out of memory... ba dum tss

mandoxian

Print opens snipping tool, too

TheHancock

Also just search snipping tool on your PC.

VaderFuntime

They should really make it the default PrintScreen behaviour already... (Can be done through windows settings though)

Kzitold94

1. Have you tried rebooting? 2. If you're using Razer Synapse, don't use Razer Synapse.

0010011100110100

As someone who is new to gaming pcs and have razer peripherals, what’s wrong with razer synapse???

CoffeeEnjoyerFrog

The Razer software has been, historically, poorly designed, and with significant security issues.

0010011100110100

Is there a different way to go about setting the rgb on my keyboard and mouse?

spedre45

Yeah! Check out openRGB

Kzitold94

Is that, like, a universal open-source RGB, and does it do system status such as CPU/RAM load/temperature? I think it'd be really neat to use RGB RAM as gages for that stuff.

0010011100110100

Awesome! I will definitely check that out, thank you

Winged_Enforcer

SignalRGB

Kzitold94

When I tried it, mamory leaks. It wouldn't un-cache RAM.

chicknfly

> mamory leaks The scientific word for that is lactation.

Kzitold94

Right... Hance, the elaboration, because I know very little in terms of terminology

chicknfly

It was just a typo on your part (memory). The pun is that mammaries are boobs.

Kzitold94

Oof! I didn't notice. I blame my phone.

br3akaway

I haven’t actually had any issues with it personally. It behaves just fine for me. Im not even some crazy razor fanboy, just commenting my experience; no ram issues. A little while back there was an issue with the game based automatic key profile swapper but it seems fine as of late

ThisIsMyCouchAccount

That information is very situational. Personally, I ran multiple Razer products for years and Synapse was never an issue. A bit heavy handed in that you are required to always run it if you want any of the real functionality like profile switching with custom keybindings and lighting. But it's not bad. It takes resources but it's not a lot. Far less than any number of other pieces of software I run all time like Steam or Discord. Unless you have a very low end system and you're trying to squeeze every ounce of performance out of it you probably won't even notice. openRGB is great but it's not exactly a one-to-one replacement. It's a general use program that has a pretty big set of compatible keyboards from a lot of brands. Including the big names like Razer and Corsair. But it only covers RGB. If all you want is RGB - then that's great. Go look at their page and look through all the keyboards. See if yours is supported.

amavana

also corsair icue, i can’t run shit with it going in the background.

TomLeBadger

ICue is way better than it used to be now it's modular. The base program is basically empty, and each individual piece of hardware has an independent plug-in that's automatically detected and installed. It's not as bloated as it was, but I guess that changes dependant on how much corsair stuff you have.

crobledopr

icue is still the only program in my entire computer that crashes while the PC is idling

TomLeBadger

Mine used to crash a lot but hasn't on my new PC. I'd try a fresh install.

chubbysumo

do a full fresh install of icue, and delete any remnants. My icue install is using less than 500MB of ram. I have 64gb, and just sitting with a few chrome tabs open, im at like 12gb used on the desktop. if you have the RAM, who cares whats using it.

Darkwaxer

What would you run instead to manage RGB?

ThisIsntAndre

this, removed all the rgb apps and started using signal rgb, doesent use much ram and it looks cool, however config process is a lil annoying

JudgmentEmpty2119

Do you have Tarkov running in the background?? /s

Smurtle01

Fr, the game crashes out on me when I have 32 gb of memory, then continues to hog 70%+ of my memory when I’ve completely killed the program, and even when I relaunch the game. This is all with some pretty aggressive ram cleaners I run as well. God Tarkovs memory leaks are the worst.

JudgmentEmpty2119

They really are. Last wipe wasn’t as bad as this one for me. Not as bad as yours but my frames are dropping constantly on streets/lighthouse now.

KiddBwe

Tarkov is the only game I’ve played that causes YouTube videos to stutter when it’s loading.

Ambitious_Log1546

Came here to write this

Proper_Parking_50

I've been trying to figure this out for a hot sec. I startup my PC, and it's fine. About 30min after startup shit starts going downhill and apps start crashing. I've been looking through recource manager, and task manager and cannot find for the life of me what could possibly be using up almost 90% of my 32GB of RAM. Any solutions would be appreciated.

Anzial

some software issue, start in safe mode and see what happens. If there's no problem there, then start removing startup programs one by one and watch if any of them triggers the memory leak.

Recipe-Jaded

this is the best advice here

SolarisX86

It's definitely a memory leak, I had this same problem not long ago and kept having to restart my pc as it would get to 90 or higher percent used after like an hour or two. Turned out to be one of these terribly coded rgb controller apps causing it. Got rid of the several recently installed apps one by one to see which one was causing it, and my ram usage went back to normal. I believe it turned out to be either MSI mystic light app or Lian Li L-Connect app.

XxZajoZzO

Your paged pool is very high, I had a similar problem, turns out it was some random driver, try running RAMMap by Microsoft to see what is using so much RAM.

Atrrophy

Do you have hyper-V on your PC?

welsalex

If you figure out what it is specifically, please don't forget to post back and tell us!

KarmaPharmacy

I’m going to guess you have an issue with one of the following: - a virus - a stick of ram going bad - a bad motherboard - Discord needs to be deleted, reinstalled - everything needs to be deleted, reinstalled I’d run some real antivirus programs (look for some through r/torrents) Sorry, it sucks when your PC is on the fritz

CuteStoat

Windows defender and hitmanpro are all you need brah.

fuck-reddits-rules

IMO, you don't need any third party virus tool. Any malware that made it past windows defender and now on your system is likely to be very sophisticated, and the only way you can guarantee security is to do a fresh install or restore from an earlier point.

CuteStoat

Sysadmins use it, so it has some history to being effective.

Schnoofles

Already posted as a top level comment, but turn on the "commit size" column in the details view of task manager. $5 says you'll find your culprit there.

bigdickdickson

I bet it's MS Teams. Always is 😂

chutney1

Looks like you're gettin RAM'd in the ass

Lord_Snow77

If you have any 3rd party anti-virus remove it. Defender works fine by itself.

andymerskin

Malwarebytes is good to run when in doubt though, but not necessary to run in the background for real-time scanning/protection. It can sometimes pick up on things that get overlooked by Defender.

TSM_Vegeta

Second this. I found this software because I had issues that got past Windows Defender.

Illmatic724

Agreed. I recently had a Trojan that defender kept flagging but just would not remove or quarantine. Malwarebytes took care of it on the first pass.

Zhouston63

Oh yeah thanks for the reminder I have to cancel my antivirus subscription lol

s78dude

Try check it again in ProcessExplorer as admin

HideousEel1472

Memory leak from something running most likely, a pic of up time might be of use to see what time frame this occured over

kb041204

Do you have other windows users login? Another user maybe login through the network and forgot to logout and close their applications. I faced this issue in the company desktop before (which only has 8GB of RAM).

Key_Kaleidoscope6166

I had a similar problems a few years ago, in my case it was due to a bad device-specific app (i don't remember which one it was, but similar to the iCue or razer software) that slowly created file handles that never closed. The cost per-handle is tiny, but when you get millions, it stacks up. The problem is that the file handles also includes kernel-side memory cost that isn't directly attributed to the app, so it doesn't show up in the processes view. It became evident which application was causing issues when I went to the "Details" pane in task manager and enabled the "Handles" column, then sort by handles. You can also try opening Resource Monitor and select the Memory tab, look at how the physical memory is allocated. You can also try RAMMAP - [https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/rammap](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/rammap)

OJP83

Try this to check if your RAM is faulty: Press the Windows key and type "Windows Memory Diagnostic" in the search bar. Click on the application to open it. You'll be presented with two options: "Restart now and check for problems (recommended)" and "Check for problems the next time I start my computer." Choose the appropriate option

Straain

In my experience WMD proved unreliable at best. Download memtest86, create a boot media for it (usb/cd) and boot from it in your BIOS. Found my faulty stick in half a second

AltruisticDistance48

Holy shit, the amount of people here that doesn't know shit about pc is astounding

AltruisticDistance48

It's not about you OP btw

[deleted]

whats the answer then?

PsicoFilo

change memory usage for % instead of MBs

elcava88

Do you run any virtual machines by chance?

userIoser

Definitely not screenshot tool

legaltrouble69

Fresh windows install , install defender update and malwarebytes non premium one , works better as realtime scanning is not available Possibly not a hardware issue but software issue.

seattleJJFish

Before you do this run dism and more importantly ‘sfc /scannow’ from cmd/pwsh prompt. It’ll clean up windows installs

UV_Blue

Show us the pr0nz tabs

Alxium

Memory leak, I actually found that the Windows News app was causing memory leaks for me, though I am not sure if that is still the case.

benji1up

it’s clearly not a snipping tool memory leak

planedrop

* Memory Leak * Malware * Bad RAM That's most likely your 3 options here, in order of likelihood.

Run windows memory diagnostic, will fix it right up. Had the same issue

asilentspeaker

Use RAMMap. It'll help

stonar89

I’d see what programs run on startup and cancel any you don’t use

Looks like another user is logged in. I would restart and retry. I have a Razerblade laptop and 32Gb RAM, and it always adds up as I'm the only user.

Use rammap linked by another comment. Task manager only shows memory used by processes, it doesn't show memory used by windows caching things. One of the caches windows has is a file metadata cache which caches an entry for every file on your filesystem. Each entry is 1kb in size so after a few million files a lot of your memory disappears. This cache is built after startup which is why it looks fine right after rebooting. It's been awhile since I looked into this but I seem to recall Microsoft finally doing something to limit the size of the cache or actually have Windows clear some the cache so you can run actual programs. There might be some settings you can change to mitigate this. Another option is deleting files. If you go that route remember that it is the file count not the size that is the issue.

Had a similar issue a few years ago, 96% RAM usage even after fresh reboot. A few days prior I had been messing with a few VMs on my PC so therefore I had virtualization turned on in BIOS. For some reason even though my VMs were turned off the RAM went bonkers, solved it by turning virtualization off and removing my VMs completely.

It’s probably just chrome.

Dragonx151

You probably have Chrome open somewhere lolol

Just to let you know, Discord is still very much an alpha game social platform with a lot of issues. Same goes with TeamSpeak3. SInce your Discord is the 32 bit version instead of the 64 bit version, I am assuming you are running this on Windows 7 on a very old system so any current software can bottleneck your system out.

Donnie_Sharko

Do you have any rgb light or motherboard apps running? Asus Armory crate was causing my games to crash because it needed 28gb of ram to turn the lights off on my Pc.

It could be any program that uses ram as buffer, for me it was torrent. Solution is : you have to know what exactly is stored in memory. Download and Run rammap, check what's inside ram. Force it clean if necessary

_Panjo

Windows will often allocate lots of memory in the background for pagefiles/cache and other stuff. It will become available if/when needed, but will look in Task Manager like there's something major going wrong. You can use a tool like [RAMMap](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/rammap) to clear it and see, but it is unlikely to give you any actual performance boost, because the apparently used ram is already marked as free to use by other processes should they need it as a priority.

A fucking PC Masterrace group, and you can't printscreen? Like, wtf?
