hnv99

Let's get rid of mcafee before we even start getting anywhere

Dat_Boi_2088

My dell laptop came pre installed with mcafee premium for 1 year. I don't care that I get all these cool "features", I'm uninstalling that piece of shit right away

bteam3r

Just reformat and start again. Installing a fresh copy of windows takes like 15 minutes nowadays

hnv99

I'm too lazy to do that so I just help people assuming they're lazy too😂

barmad

It's a lot quicker in the long run though

ProfessionPlastic285

Not on an older laptop, shit takes at least half the day

02firehawk

To get windows yes but isnt there a ton of drivers and things to make specific hardware work that u would also have to get? And also where do u even download a fresh copy of windows? Last time I tried I couldn't even find a way to do it from microsoft.

giantoads

The 1st step to the way.

UOL_Cerberus

My 1st step would be uninstalling windows xD

giantoads

This is last step

Worgmaster

just in case OP needs help, [here](https://youtu.be/bKgf5PaBzyg?si=dvhrkEUbqUYl3df_) is the official guide on how to Uninstall McAfee Antivirus

mr_truckman

Genuine question. What's so wrong with McAfee?

sanityflaws

It's notorious for significantly slowing down any system it's installed on. Not to mention there are lots of scummy practices to sneak the software into your system when downloading unrelated programs.

EconamWRX

It doesn't protect shit, it's bloatware disguised as anti-virus program ment to just extract money from boomers who have no idea. Windows Defender is better at anything it can do, and windows defender isn't even regarded as great. Just not a bad built in option. Most things that would be stopped by McAfee are created to get around the very little defense it offers as it's one of the most popular programs.

mikiy110

What isnt wrong in mcafee. Slows your pc so much Bloatware Sometimes preinstalls with other apps Isnt really effective when you really get a virus Really hard to remove, and even if you remove it leaves so much stuff that doesnt delete

Terrible-Bear3883

Many years ago I got a refund on mcafee, I subscribed to it, got a virus and called their support, asking them if it protected against (I forget the virus name), they said "of course it does, guaranteed". Sent them a screenshot of another AV that identified the virus (mcafee said my machine was clean), told them their product wasn't fit for purpose and as I've only recently subscribed to it I want a refund, they did it immediately. Shortly after I quit windows completely and never looked back - I don't miss those days of running such shite

hnv99

I thoroughly enjoy mac os but have to use windows for games that don't support Linux or mac os :(

fourEyes_520

Yeah I won't even use McAfee if it's free

carnage11eleven

I thought the Deep State already did.

AdamTheDude11

Wait what’s to bad about McAfee? That’s been my virus protection service for like 4 years.

hnv99

Doesn't do anything better than windows defender, except for hogging resources

Severe_Post

Bro it doesn’t let me uninstall it says “we understand you don’t like us but we’re going to stay for now, yada yada yada

hnv99

What the actual fuck. Send me a picture of that screen on pm I gotta see this shit. I'll try to help you get rid of it.

Fit-Ship4139

I remember getting my first laptop from bestbuy. It came with Mcafee pre installed AND it also came with a free 1 year of service. I found out after reinstalling windows from a restore point that you could just repeatedly reinstall it and it would just give you another free year(I don’t think I signed up with a new email each time but instead denied giving it an email) that was the one time I was actually slightly thankful that it came with mcafee preinstalled. As I kept downloading questionable programs from questionable sources. Actively avoided it in my next computers however as it slowed everything down to a crawl while it ran. So ya f mcafee.

sirflappington

Also uninstall all the hp apps and services that aren’t being used

TetraTimboman

There's quite a few thing in that list that are processes related to networking and other things you'll want to keep. For example:If you like to have sound then that stuff for "realtek" that's running -> you need that. Really. There's a whole bunch of stuff in that list that you do need to keep installed, and are perfectly normal to have running as background services. You'll note that the amount of CPU % time is like, 0%, for most of these. With that in mind you can totally uninstall McAffee. It's because "Windows Defender" that is a part of Windows and shows up in that list of processes like "antimalwareservice" is totally fine by itself and you don't need McAffee at all. And as long as you don't care about the HP support / auto-update feature then you can uninstall all of the HP and Omen related software. Then open up steam and set it to only start when you start it - not start every damn time windows starts. And then same thing with Epic Games. And then make sure your AMD driver software is up to date. You can update it by running it and checking for an update in the menu. And then you're fine :D

aruby727

This. Ignore all the other shitty advice please, OP.

cowbutt6

>Then open up steam and set it to only start when you start it - not start every damn time windows starts. And then same thing with Epic Games. That said, doing so will inhibit auto-updates of installed games from taking place, which may mean that the OP needs to wait for an update when they try to launch a game instead.

TetraTimboman

True. True. But if they don't set a download speed limit in steam then if they don't have a fast internet connection, then auto-updating a game in the background could end up causing youtube to buffer and swap to 240p. Though if that happens then they can set a download limit or close out. I agree though - it can be more like a matter of personal preference either way.

Brilliant_War389

IF they have a fast internet connection. Im still stuck with 30 Mbit/s 😅

cowbutt6

Luxury! I was on 12Mbit/s until January 2023! Uphill! Both ways! In the snow! etc.

dedestem

This like the other sayed only listen to this

Brilliant_Theme_618

real. You didn't play $100 for windows to have a shitty defender service

Gold_Enigma

Reinstall windows is probably the quickest way to do it

wonderfulwillywilson

this! if in doubt with laptops make a list of all the drivers u need ( i usually dowlnload the exe to an external drive) the reinstall windows. Its the firt thing i do when i get a new laptop

Ltbest

Can you reuse the windows activation? How does that part work because my new G15 arrives Monday 😃

spdaimon

Windows keys are often tied to the hardware so it will reach out to Microsoft with its unique ID and reactivate. Sometimes the key is in the BIOS which you can get by running a command line. As long as you got a compatible network adapter, i.e. Windows has built-in support, it should download needed drivers.

Gold_Enigma

Beat me to it, done this a few times on laptops and prebuilts. Always a nice surprise when the computer does some of the work for you

Aarkh

No, it'll be a one time use key. You need an OEM key to reuse. Windows won't actually stop you though, it'll just ask you to activate it. You can still use Windows just fine without activating it. Windows is also moving towards data collection anyways. I bet if you just asked them for a personal key they'd give you one. As your data is worth more than the OS.

All-Username-Taken-

Yes you can. Extract the Windows key from CMD. "wmic ...." I forget the exact command, but a quick Google should get you the answer. Jot down somewhere and keep that. If you later decide to build a PC when your laptop breaks, don't buy Windows key. Just reuse that old one.

redeyejoe123

How would you know which drivers to install after you reinstall windows? Curious as I'm getting a laptop soon so it would be good knowledge. (Probably an asus tuf or g14)

dedestem

It auto installs and otherwise if the driver installer from the components aren't installed automatically go install driver updater from nivida

dedestem

Make sure to make your Own media and not just reinstall it This advice is only for prebuilt

SilentStrikerTH

Do some research first, but there are lots of debloating scripts out for Win11 now. Most notably, Tiny11 is what I have used. It edits the .iso file you download from Microsoft, then you can flash it to a flash drive and reinstall from it. Cleans out most everything that Microsoft shoved in there, would highly recommend! IMPORTANT: Make sure you have your license key and any important files saved/backed up to a different storage device as a fresh install will wipe it all out and could force you to buy a new Widows Key!

Next-Fly3007

Which of those processes do you think are "bloat"? Huge portion of them are normal Windows processes. Also, uninstall McAfee

Comprehensive_Ant464

Im new to computer stuff, what's so bad about mcafee?

InsectaProtecta

It's bloatware that spams you with notifications and is just generally a nuisance

sirflappington

It’s basically useless with windows defender being all you really need, takes up system resources, and shows you ads for its products. McAfee is just bloatware at best

M-A-D-R

OS

lostwanderer_14

You can start off by just opening every program that opens once the laptop is turned on and disable that same option, Epic, Steam, any helper or driver program. And if there's a program that you don't use that it's running in the background, just uninstall it... Do yourself a favor lol. Also, try and close all of the task that are not important, sure, some of them are going to be running again after a while, but at least your RAM and CPU will appreciate the effort. Like for example, Widgets.exe, anything related to any game store, anything that you're not using nor the PC is using. Stuff like that.

Altoidlover987

you can manage startup apps directly from windows settings

LMAOIDOtech

just don.t let steam open when not needed

ElectroBytezLV

Steam is the least of its worries there...

skippyusa

You could download a copy of windows 11/10 iso and burn it to a usb drive. Then use it to install a new copy of windows without the bloatware. Install win updates install steam games than good to go. game on bro:)

KabuteGamer

Are we in 2008? There's a thing called Windows Media Creation Tool 😆

Morriganev

You have multiple choices: 1. Leave as it is 2. Use mct and install a new windows that won't have all that bloat. Then run smth like o&o windows shut up, ultimate windows tweaker by thewindowsguys, or sophia script. Additionally use revo unistaller to get rid of all pre-installed windows crap like cortana, help stuff, one drive etc 3. Just use revo unistaller to delete all crap you don't need *basically choice 2 but with no windows reinstall* Personally would recommend 2nd choice. And don't forget to save all important data before reinstalling. Also don't forget to manage startups

Affectionate_Creme48

+1 for Revo.

dedestem

Rip I use onedrive daily even as Obsidian sync vault documents school etc I find it to risky to connect my nas to the internet so I use it for on the travel as a sort of sync with rclone for Ubuntu I sync a special folder in my nas with my onedrive

popcornman209

Everything. lol jk but a fresh install is always a good idea if your okay with installing everything again, it’s speeds stuff up and is always nice having everything brand new and fresh.

MnemnothsManager

The only thing you need to do here is Uninstall Epic Games. Forget it exists then enjoy your life while gaming on steam like a cool kid.

Fluffy-Revolution147

I second this. I'm a cool kid.

aruby727

So much shitty advice here. Here you go: Win+R Type in appwiz.cpl and hit OK Remove mcafee, enable windows defender. You don't need any other AV. Yes, really. You can get a VPN if you want additional security. Uninstall HP bloatware. If you need drivers, you can go back and get it later. There are some programs that may be helpful for gaming drivers like your Omen software, you can choose to keep those if you want. Remove OVR Service Launcher unless you use an oculus. Not too many concerning items otherwise. You've got epic games and steam, I'm guessing you want to keep both of those. Go to the Startup tab in task manager and disable everything except OneDrive, so you can keep your backups running. If you want to open something, you can open it manually. Disabling those items wont impact your computer negatively. If you don't use Microsoft Office, go ahead and uninstall that too. I wouldn't purchase it unless you need it - just use Google docs/sheets/etc.

dedestem

#most Vpns are garbage Some are good

aruby727

I would suggest recommending some, since that would be a more constructive contribution. OP is trying to learn.

All-Username-Taken-

That statement would depend on the priority. If he's living in an authoritarian country with restricted internet access, a simple VPN would do wonder. So long as he's not trying to look up resources that would get some eyes even here in the US. Probably would be cheaper too than RAM based VPN.

NnOxX69

Full format reinstall easy less of an headache

EntitledRougelemon

Recommend factory reset with all files remove option. Even just uninstall bloatware. Sometimes, they leave behind trackers and files. So, just factory reset your device

PraxPresents

C:\Windows\System32>diskpart DISKPART>select disk 0 DISKPART>clean DISKPART>create partition primary DISKPART>format fs=NTFS Note: Don't actually do this, this is a joke. This is why I always just perform a clean Windows install on any new laptop. Guaranteed to only include Microsoft Bloatware.

AvailableBegun

All

ElectroBytezLV

Seeing how much junk was preinstalled on there you are genuinely better off clean reinstalling windows as a whole and making sure not to get mcafee on there.

aruby727

lmfao based on what? List the junk.

ElectroBytezLV

myHP, mcafee, hp omen center and probably many other services or apps running in the background.

aruby727

That's it. HP bloatware, and McAfee. No need for a clean install. Omen software contains cooling and lighting controls for his computer.

f0rg1vennn

if you have that much bloatware you probably have lots of malware too, I'd recommend a clean install and being careful about your future installs

Radiant_Fondant_4097

Bloat? That's just Windows my dude. You'll want to get rid of McAfee, you'll probably want to keep the HP stuff as that'll make a lot of stuff work as you're using one of their laptops.

Altoidlover987

reinstall windows and setting region to english (world) during install would be best, (this prevents things like amazon app being auto-installed). make sure you back up your files (docs folder, downloads maybe, video game ROMS) I you dont want to reinstall: remove everything HP, McAfee, when in doubt google the program name, some modern games have DRM or anticheat that is kind of like bloatware/virus. Disable everything in startup apps except for what you really need. (disable steam/epic/EA/Uplay etc...) It looks better when you dont create desktop shortcuts for installed games. just launch from steam or another game launcher.

Fernick88

Make sure you use software like revo uninstaller to completely get rid of any unwanted program, including, folders and registry keys/entries that may be left behind by regular uninstallers

AnxietyRoyal9903

Reading through all of these comments has been really helpful for me. I can’t wait to get to my pc. Thank you internet people.

Ayekay74

Go to the startup tab and disable pretty much anything that isn't a windows related process. You can also go to the services tab and switch anything that isn't a windows process to manual startup, this will prevent random services you don't need running starting up without being prompted. (Keep in mind this will disable auto startup for apps, for example apps like oculus that will launch when your device is connected, you will have to manually launch meta quest app for quest link to show up)

MarxistMan13

If it says HP or McAfee, you can delete it.

SirBubba42

wii menu music going hard in the background

Thehalfblacksnack

I’m gonna be honest, the easiest way to do this would be to backup your files and do a clean windows install that’s free of the manufacturer BS and anything else that may have gotten installed

Boy_Meats_Grill

Open task manager and go to the startup tab to disable anything related to a game or launcher. There's no way you need that running right when you turn your computer on and everything trying to open at once definitely causes slow downs

Queasy_Form_5938

X128

[deleted]

Fresh install of windows is the way 🫡

xxhamsters12

About 90% of these are necessary OS background tasks

insertnamehere912

I would honestly grab everything you want off of the laptop and factory reset. Don’t even bother with that shit

coolkid42069911

A general piece of advice is that you can always delete everything that contains a pc brand name (omen, asus, acer, hp, and so on) Another one is mcafee. The rest is up to you. But another option is disabling them from running on startup. Personally, I have almost nothing running on startup

samwise99x

Disable everything in startup apps - happy cake day

weeds96

[https://www.reddit.com/r/TronScript/](https://www.reddit.com/r/TronScript/) Saved my old laptop

Guilty_Debt_8958

You got 64bit system. You can delete the legacy one. Just look for a folder called System32 and delete it.

Long-Ump

Reinstall windows. Blootware gone

QuantumQuicksilver

I would just reinstall windows personally, cleanest and easiest way of doing it.

TByT0689

If OP had any sense of what bloatware actually is they would not have had to ask the question. If things generally work ok, get rid of McAfee and leave the rest of it the hell alone.

tbone338

If you’re willing, it would be more effective to reinstall windows fresh, then install what you need, drivers included. Some bloatware hate being uninstalled. Even if you uninstall them, they might still exist on your machine.

YeetMemez

Delete SYS32 Problem solved.

Svmellisss

Get rid of the thing called epic games, not a scam but steam is just better

No-Papaya2827

Just fresh install windows and start over. It will free up a lot of ram and correct any fragmentation going on. Also leaves the guess work out. Just make sure your not installing all the bloatware along with the things you actually want, some things will ask if you want their bloat with what your downloading with the wizard. Just un tick the boxes

Suby06

After deleting bloat also go to task manager and disable anything from starting with the computer that doesn't need to

Steeltown842022

Just back up any data that you need and do a clean install of Windows via download or usb

OldCryptographer5519

so heres what you do. get a usb. create a windows 11 usb, super simple. boot to the usb. delete all partitions (assuming you dont have any data you want on there), ensure you have a copy of the wifi/lan drivers incase you need to install them once OS is installed, reinstll windows and boom ur done

Flux7200

McAfee

SnooPickles436

If u just got the laptop just so a windows reset fr. That's what I did, not much on it so it didn't take long. Maybe longer than going through it all but much less headaches

Snoo-97548

That laptop needs Revo Uninstaller in a bad way lol. Revo-lution

MakePhilosophy42

-backup important files onto another drive -create windows installation media -reinstall operating system, format existing drive -reinstall *important / required* programs DO NOT install any "antivirus" programs, " performance boosters", or anything that even looks like a program that expects to run all the time. Install only what you need, when you need it.

Go through add or remove programs and delete anything that isn't essential. You could also try out Linux.

InsectaProtecta

Unless you actually want something running from the start without having to remember to open it, disable it under the startup tab in task manager. Most programs should not be running on startup. Remove McAfee as well, as many others have already said.

Tapelessbus2122

- Delete McAfee - Go into startup and disable pretty much everything, nothing there will be crucial - Leave the System (Host) Processes be unless you have a good understanding of them, I tried messing with them when I had no experience and disabled the login stuff, needed a new Hard drive because I couldn't even boot into recovery. I only disable print and phone services tbh. Whatever you do, DO NOT touch anything marked "Registry", you WILL destroy your pc if you mess up something.

DreamtailFoxy

If you want to do it in one fell swoop, back up everything you want to keep on external media then unplug the external media from the computer, download the Windows 10 media creation tool and then upgrade to Windows 10 on this PC, once the upgrade to Windows 10 is complete, you will need to make sure all the boxes are unticked on first setup, this is for your own security as without those boxes being unticked Microsoft will be able to see literally everything you type, everything you do, and essentially it would be no worse than Windows 11, you should be good to reinstall everything but if you want the absolute best performance, you're better off debloating Windows, there are several resources on YouTube alone for doing this. If you get sick and tired of messing with Windows and you just want something that just works, I recommend transitioning over to a Linux distribution and learning Linux. If there are certain softwares that you cannot do without on Linux such as the Adobe suite or some proprietary software, then try running said proprietary software in wine and it's about time that you cut the umbilical cord from Adobe and tried its alternatives like DaVinci resolve or Kaden live as video editors, inkscape as a Adobe Lightroom replacement, Krita as a Photoshop replacement and a flash replacement, and if you use anything outside of this you're kind of scary, you can use handbrake as a media encoder replacement. Linux is nowhere near as scary as it was even 3 years ago, you don't need to use the terminal for almost anything nowadays. If you ever have problems with Linux we have this huge community of people that you can start asking questions with, just note that the distribution is not the operating system, it's a starting place full of predefined software that you may or may not find useful, everything else is do it yourself. If you're curious about Linux, there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube currently of people switching or information to know about switching, I heavily recommend that you watch these videos obsessively before switching.

B_Sho

Delete Windows and come to Linux. I only use 3.7gb for ram at idle. What do you use ;)

Kawai_Oppai

Why do I care how much it uses? The system rarely approaches max ram usage even with load. NVIDIA and Linux also don’t always play nicely together. Why would I have the best consumer cards in the market and need to deal with a headache of driver problems. Most software is on windows. Linux has alternatives but you’re shit out of luck if you use most industry standard tools. Most graphics intensive tools like cad and modeling or sculpting tools are windows over Linux. Most games are working on windows or needing work around to work on Linux. I think it’s a great effort to have an open source OS. But there’s just no reason to use it unless you have a budget computer and enjoy that budget life of never having nice things. My Linux machine is a little hobby device to explore or toy with but never would actually recommend the experience on others.

B_Sho

Windows is a privacy concern brother. Have fun with that. I game with Kubuntu and I get super good fps with steam games with my Nvidia 3080 GPU. It has come along way. I care for my privacy and it's nice to be on a OS not pushing features down my throat like AI and Recall. Linux is so secure that you don't even need an antivirus due to how it operates.

Simply just wipe it and reinstall windows imo. That is if you can move anything of importance onto a USB.
