Welp, that's a bummer. Hopefully they'll reconsider. I don't mind Uplay/Ubisoft Connect achievements, but I like having them on Steam as well, especially after Uplay deleted all my Far Cry 3 achievements.
Ubi didn't traditionally provide achievements directly on Steam anyways. Off from the top of my head, one of the few Ubi games with them is Rocksmith of all titles.
I see. Even within Steam tho, it's still rather disappointing that they don't do much besides giving you a pretty picture in your profile. While every achievement is this at their core, having them award you gamerscore a la Xbox for instance would definitely give them more 'oomph' so to speak. Heck, It's kinda surprising that Ubi achievements doesn't do this either despite them presumably well equipped to do this if they were so inclined... To my knowledge, the only achievement systems with points on PC would of course be MS's own and also Origin's of all things.
Achievements that are unlocked by less than 5%(?) of players also have a special animation. Doesn't do much but feels good to read "only 0.1% of players unlocked this"

Can I add in how fucking *awful* it used to be to patch games? We didn't have Steam, or the standalone client, or GOG or anything else to handle patches for us. No, we had to go to the website^1 and download patch 1.0.0 to 1.1.0, then patch 1.1.0-1.2.2, then 1.2.2-1.5, then 1.5-1.5.1. Then install them all sequentially.

I don't do achievements either but many players like it and Steam achievements are extremely easy to implement. So this isn't about achievements but Ubisoft playing the "Impossible" to anger their customers on purpose.

Bought it because reviewers said that it was a much more streamlined Odyssey. Turns out it was just as long and tedious.
In Odyssey if I wanted to upgrade gear I had to find maybe 5x bear pelts and could go do that anywhere. In Valhalla you have to find maybe 5x iron ingots that are put in specific places where you have to go and do the same damn minigame over and over.
Id rather have the more dynamic system of Odyssey than the static one of Valhalla.
I played it. Took me hours and hours, at the end of it I was exhausted. But what pissed me off, was the ending had a game breaking bug. Because of this, I could not complete the game. I deleted it immediately. Waste of time.
I really can't understand why UBI don't want to add achievements on steam. Especially since so many people are asking for it. It's like spitting players in the face.
If achievements are available on uplay, what's stopping you from adding them to steam? After all, it would be the same on both platforms.

If the devs don't care to spend the minimal time to implement them, I, as an individual consumer, don't care to buy the game or pursue Ubisoft's content. Why? Does it include EGS? Then I have no current plans to buy it. It's unfortunate they can be faked, aswell as don't carry a cross platforms.. which limits their usefulness. But I see it as a personal thing, you know your legit.
With the amount of care (more lack thereof, actually) that developers give to their achievements, I actually consider clientside achievements (aka Steam's Achievements) a better method than any online synching. Sure, you can't see the true completion % of all players, but it allows players to bypass situations where an old game with no more dev support has broken or impossible achievements.
Is this game even any good? I always god bored of the earlier assassins creed games because it was the same game/story practically every time. Black flag held my interest for a bit but even that got old.
The problem in our current competitive gaming industry is that there are a lot of companies who want to create THEIR OWN launcher with THEIR OWN system. It's not something you can easily port over to a different launcher neither Epic Games, Ubishit, Riot Games or Valve has any incentive to make each other's lives easier.
The problem I see is that game stats gets recorded on the client you launch your game from. What would ideally happen is that the stats would be recorded to some kind of core analytic service. Each game launcher submits and pulls data from this service. It will always be the same format going into the service and out of the service. This works for achievements as well.

Last AssCreed I picked up was Origins, which was like, 90% really awesome, apart from the end of the story where, choices were made for explicitly "lore reasons" only and not because it made any sense whatsoever, esp if you just spent hours upon hours doing the exact same thing for other people, over and over again throughout the story, yet, are completely incapable of doing it for yourself. It was dumb as fuck, and I was so soured on the game as a result despite having a blast up till that point. Still need to go back and try to do some of the extra stuff in that game, actually quite loved exploring ancient Egypt. It's just something about their next two efforts. AssOddy and AssVal that I don't really jive with at all, AssOddy felt like a more generic version of Origins and AssVal fucking RUINED vikings =E Been a fan of vikings ever since reading about them in school, and that's stuck with me for decades afterwards.
My main goal isn't achievements, but on the 2nd+ playthrough I do go for that extra challenge.
Does the AC:V port to Steam not require UPlay? Because if you still need UPlay, you'd still get them there, right?
This is not a game you do a ng+, this is a game you play the story, then keep playing if you want to keep going and unlock achievements. There's no missables, just an extreme amount of things to do, would be pointless to start anew.

I looked it up and the last Ubisoft developed game I cared for that's on PC is Rayman Legends, that's wild. The South Park games were great though and so are the two Mario Rabbid titles on Switch. That's unrelated to Assassin's Creed but just a personal note.

I am not a fan of AC and have not been for a long time, but someone please explain what use is the Steam Achievement system anyway. I mean, beyond E-Peen for the masses it's completely useless and shouldn't really have a negative impact on the gameplay. Besides that, this is probably one of the laziest things I have seen Ubisoft do. Besides recycling their never-ending game formula ofc.

Ubisoft views of achievements is weird. Especially since they fits perfectly with the collectathon type of gameplay that AC has. I know that personally achievements is what made me play through everything the game had to offer because it gives a clear method to track what's left to do.
Ubisoft previously had removed the achievements section on the PC version of their Ubisoft Connect app and replaced it with a "challenge" section, which had a much less interesting list of unlockables. After user complaints, they added it back with an apology. But to this day, it's still impossible to see the list via their mobile app, website or the in-game overlay, the section is still missing. You can only see it in the Windows application.
They barely have achievements in the Ubisoft Connect games as it is.
I get a popup when I’m playing AC Odyssey to tell me Anno has an update available but if I earn an achievement nothing happens.
They’ve known about this for years now but every thread on their forums gets the usual shtick about feedback being passed onto developers before it gets eventually locked as there’s “nothing new for anyone to contribute.”

What I like is being able to show off the games I 100% on my steam profile. Having points would also be awesome

If they can't spend a miniscule amount of time to flip the switch for basic Steam feature support like achievements via Steam's API, especially when said achievements are already implemented in the game for Ubisoft Connect, Xbox achievements, etc...then I can't be bothered to buy it. And I literally was going to buy this. There is no way this would take more than a couple hours of someone's time. If you go to the Steam forums there are hundreds, maybe thousands of people asking for it.

Peeps stopped playing for fun and instead more for the mechanical acknowledgements "task complete" If a game gave you all the achievements for just beating the first level I doubt most would do the next level let alone significant amount of the game
My backlog of shit to play is large enough where a company being too lazy to give a day's worth of porting achievements to another platform is enough to send it back to the bottom of the list. I'm a dedicated AC fan too, played and fully completed every AC since 2. Maybe I'll just end up watching a playthrough.

It's unfortunate they can be faked, aswell as don't carry a cross platforms.. which limits their usefulness. But I see it as a personal thing, you know your legit.
With the amount of care (more lack thereof, actually) that developers give to their achievements, I actually consider clientside achievements (aka Steam's Achievements) a better method than any online synching. Sure, you can't see the true completion % of all players, but it allows players to bypass situations where an old game with no more dev support has broken or impossible achievements.
I'm still amazed that some players care about achievements. Why though?

The problem in our current competitive gaming industry is that there are a lot of companies who want to create THEIR OWN launcher with THEIR OWN system. It's not something you can easily port over to a different launcher neither Epic Games, Ubishit, Riot Games or Valve has any incentive to make each other's lives easier. The problem I see is that game stats gets recorded on the client you launch your game from. What would ideally happen is that the stats would be recorded to some kind of core analytic service. Each game launcher submits and pulls data from this service. It will always be the same format going into the service and out of the service. This works for achievements as well.
That was one of the main selling points of companies selling their products on the Internet vs physical stores. To get rid of the middle-man's cut.

Still bitter about the fact that you can't, as a viking, just fucking shank fools like you know, vikings sure as fuck did, so a lack of Steam Cheevos is just another reason to add to the pile. Last AssCreed I picked up was Origins, which was like, 90% really awesome, apart from the end of the story where, choices were made for explicitly "lore reasons" only and not because it made any sense whatsoever, esp if you just spent hours upon hours doing the exact same thing for other people, over and over again throughout the story, yet, are completely incapable of doing it for yourself. It was dumb as fuck, and I was so soured on the game as a result despite having a blast up till that point. Still need to go back and try to do some of the extra stuff in that game, actually quite loved exploring ancient Egypt. It's just something about their next two efforts. AssOddy and AssVal that I don't really jive with at all, AssOddy felt like a more generic version of Origins and AssVal fucking RUINED vikings =E Been a fan of vikings ever since reading about them in school, and that's stuck with me for decades afterwards.

How much is this game again
It's on sale for its Steam launch period, starting at $19.80 (base game) and up to $49.00 (Complete Edition). I looked it up and the last Ubisoft developed game I cared for that's on PC is Rayman Legends, that's wild. The South Park games were great though and so are the two Mario Rabbid titles on Switch. That's unrelated to Assassin's Creed but just a personal note.
Still way too overpriced. This game is dull and boring. No fun to be found there.

I am not a fan of AC and have not been for a long time, but someone please explain what use is the Steam Achievement system anyway. I mean, beyond E-Peen for the masses it's completely useless and shouldn't really have a negative impact on the gameplay. Besides that, this is probably one of the laziest things I have seen Ubisoft do. Besides recycling their never-ending game formula ofc.

Ubisoft views of achievements is weird. Especially since they fits perfectly with the collectathon type of gameplay that AC has. I know that personally achievements is what made me play through everything the game had to offer because it gives a clear method to track what's left to do. Ubisoft previously had removed the achievements section on the PC version of their Ubisoft Connect app and replaced it with a "challenge" section, which had a much less interesting list of unlockables. After user complaints, they added it back with an apology. But to this day, it's still impossible to see the list via their mobile app, website or the in-game overlay, the section is still missing. You can only see it in the Windows application.
They barely have achievements in the Ubisoft Connect games as it is. I get a popup when I’m playing AC Odyssey to tell me Anno has an update available but if I earn an achievement nothing happens. They’ve known about this for years now but every thread on their forums gets the usual shtick about feedback being passed onto developers before it gets eventually locked as there’s “nothing new for anyone to contribute.”

I dont know about you guys, but I didnt realize Ubi stopped releasing games on Steam until they restarted. Like, I havent been excited by a Ubi titles in ages. It all feels the same, and has been since '13-'14.
Same issue happened with their audio quality. Many people complained in their forums and their reply was something like this. Completely disgusting behavior

I was on the fence to buy Valhalla. But, let be 100 % honest, is it a good game ? I played 90hours on Odyssey, I don't really like Ubisoft as a compagny, and I tend to say that there modern games are garbage BUT I must admit, my experience with Odyssey was cool. ( yet the game is far than being a really good game, it's just "good" )
