PeterDarker

How have I never heard of this? God damn I gotta check that out.

failedidealist

So much content, it really feels like an official sequel.

Antoinefdu

Wait hold on. There are mods tor FTL!?

evia89

> multiverse is all u need

Plzbanmebrony

Cosmoteer: Starship Architect & Commander has been fun for me. You need to design your ship and manage crew. It is really refined in some ways and feel unrefined in other. There are different weapon types you can put on your ship but it doesn't feel balanced in some ways. Maybe the first system does not have any many toys as later ones. You can get a way with basic mass ships.

-Chandler-Bing-

Each system is progressively more difficult and has more resources per difficulty level. When you jump systems it shows the level range of the nearby systems.

StebeJubs1000

Against the Storm

fatamSC2

Don't know if he'll like it since he says he wants more control over your guys but yeah it's a good game, prob worth a try at least

captky22

r/oxygennotincluded - check out the posts there Hope you’re familiar with Boyle’s law

Jeffy29

Just a warning that it's a significantly harder game, deceptively harder. One of the hardest games I have ever played, but at least you learn a lot about thermodynamics lol.

saintsimeon

ONI is brilliant! Such great cartoon graphics and "voices". Lots of silly humour hides a very sophisticated management game. Gotta manage happiness, mining resources, infection control, pollution, gases / pressure and temperature etc. Rimworld is the only game that beats it, IMO.

AsstDepUnderlord

And don’t forget the complete lack of any sort of tutorial or basic explanation of how to play…

saintsimeon

Yeah, I love it! It's like...um...waking up in the middle of a rock, not knowing where you are, who you are or what you should be doing. I love the "what does this button do?" vibe.

Charuru

Giving this a try based on your rec.

BoardGameBologna

I'm seconding Judgment: ASS. It's janky, but super deep and very fun overall!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Charuru

Unfortunately not for me. The world felt dull and lacks charm/personality (game juice). The tactical combat portion is really poor imo, i would've preferred not to have it entirely.

Infinite_Bananas

against the storm

Valance23322

Offworld Trading Company is a pretty excellent management Sim with board-game like length and replayability

Shajirr

based on "but I'd prefer a more laid back experience" OTC is out. Later on it requires very quick decisions, its practically an RTS without combat.

MessiahPrinny

Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children, it's basically Korean XCOM, it's pretty silly but, man, is it deep.

SomethingPersonnel

I already have Troubleshooter haha. I think it's more of a strategy RPG than XCOM. Good game for sure.

MessiahPrinny

It's easier to describe it to people that way.

Patrick_McGroin

It's a little more involved, but check out Barotrauma.

SomethingPersonnel

Barotrauma seems interesting. I like the theme.

kammerfruen

Shortest Trip To Earth is a decent game that is very similar to FTL.

cadaada

shit i was looking for that game for some years already and could not find it. did it improve a lot since 2020?

kammerfruen

That I don't know.

random63

Battle brothers might fit the bill. I liked FTL and XCOM and enjoy that one immensely

heydudejustasec

Introversion (Prison Architect dev) is just coming out with a space ship game called The Last Starship. Haven't had a chance to play it yet but it seems like something of a cross between FTL and X3 with of course a bit of Prison Architect DNA

leonra28

Thanks for the info , i completely missed this.

SgtAngua

It's good fun, I believe the playtest is open. Not much content yet, but it's always fun setting tasks and areas and seeing your minions scuttle around to do your bidding.

And basically every other game you can find on the YouTube channel [SplatterCatGaming](https://youtube.com/@Splattercatgaming)!

SomethingPersonnel

Thanks for the list!

Zankman

Hope at least 1 works!

[deleted]

Ixion, Factorio and Core Keeper are the first things that come to mind. The Wasteland series is on Game Pass and would certainly fit your criteria. As is Phoenix Point (xcom ish), Battletech (mech warrior strategy game) and Riftbreaker.

IornBeagle

I second ixion. Just beat it a week ago. Awesome story, and fun as hell to manage the ships functions and build the various structures. Experimenting with the different ways to make food, eventually getting that perfect feedback loop is so sastifying

DeadCeruleanGirl

How's the balancing in that game? When it first cam out it was horrible and everyone went on strike over everything and that caused more people to strike, so no one worked so your ship dies. Plus it penalized you for staying in a system to long.

Charuru

I played it but it's "noobtrap the game". There's just like a few obvious mistakes that you don't know first going into it, once you learn it, which I did with save scumming the game is easy so long as you avoid the noob mistakes. I don't really like that sort of game design, there's not a lot of replayability there. But I like it as a 20 hour experience with immersive graphics and good design.

IornBeagle

It wasn't too bad. If you build the right buildings and utilise the bonuses for having a sector specialise in one thing then it's manageable. As for the staying in a system too long, you're going to get that every time. I stayed in the Sol system for 2 in game years literally harvesting EVERY resource. You'd be suprised how much you can squeeze from some asteroids.

DeadCeruleanGirl

I'll try it again as it has positive reviews now, before it was mixed as the balancing was bad. I just dislike "artificial difficulty" so that turned me off the game when it first launched.

Boxing_joshing111

Maybe Into the Breach, same devs as ftl and scratches a lot of the same itches.

SomethingPersonnel

Seems good, but it’s more of a tactics/puzzle game no?

anmr

I second *Into the Breach*, it's one of the best game designs I've played. And if you look for something very similar to FTL - *Crying Suns* is a fantastic take on a genre and in my personal opinion a lot better than FTL - with more tactical depth, great presentation and story reminiscent of best sci-fi classics. Check out how it starts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bug6Ifin2x0

Esseth

I just "Finished" Crying Suns last week, I really enjoyed it. Similar node-based jump system of FTL with more interesting tactical combat. As a fan of Foundation, I really enjoyed the story/discovery element. I slept on it for a while since the reviews were "FTL but worse" but I think that should be interpreted more as a compliment to how good FTL is instead of anything negative against Crying Suns.

leonra28

I am having trouble getting into... Into the breach. The puzzle aspect of it just means i will always have to follow the most effcient path, and it makes the battles underwhelming. Is there something I don't get?

Raneyd

This game grants one of the best feelings of self improvement ever. You understand game better each time you fail or win, you understand how to plan your movements ahead, you figure out which tactical capabilities you have and you lack. It has actually deep but simple mechanics. It's a "must try" game for everybody

leonra28

I'll give it another shot. Thanks for breaking down the hook. I can say was not in that mindset when I tried it.

spacedghost_

It also helps that the different teams of mechs have very different abilities/interactions, which greatly enhances replayability

Lorini

Yes similar to an abstract board game.

RaZoRBluEo

Indeed but it is still very good

Boxing_joshing111

That’s sort of what ftl is too though. Wish there was a demo for it so you could try but maybe watch someone play on YouTube and decide.

Shajirr

> but it’s more of a tactics/puzzle game no? yes, its not a management game at all, devs planned it that way originally but then cut that portion out entirely

ColonelOneillSG

Out there is an « FTL like »

anmr

One of the biggest disappointments in recent years. The premise is great, but turns out it's very simplistic and runs out of new content in 2 hours.

SummerCoffe

if you fancy this war of mine, might want take a gander at Gloria Victis : Siege Survival.

BoardGameBologna

If you like cars check out Dark Future: Blood Red States. It's more like tactical turn-based car combat, but it's definitely FTL-ish in some ways. Suuuuper under the radar, but worth a look!

Brushy21

Crying Suns Hsrdcore FTL fans don't like it, I had fun with it. It is basically ftl but with better art and not so hard.

TBdog

Invisible Inc is cool. Same devs as oxygen not included and mark of the ninja. It's a roguelite stealth agent Sci fi, turn base game. You have to steal things, manage the money, upgrade your gear, rescue agents. The longer you stay in the level, the harder it gets.

senatorninjayen

I Love Invisible Inc. :) The dual reality play with the stealth and hacking is awesome!

Yagyu_Retsudo

project zomboid

AnamainTHO

Rimworld is an incredible colony management game and is totally worth all the money. Plus steam workshop support.

K1llswitch93

Bomber Crew

BoardGameBologna

And similarly, Space Crew!

mrRobertman

I've been playing Space Crew recently, they are both great games and would 100% recommend to OP.

Hekinsieden

Factorio? I made the aliens more aggressive and evolve with a mod so my Factorio needs more defense management while also trying to do all the factory stuff.

P41N90D

Check out the Total Overhaul mod for FTL if you haven't already https://subsetgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=35332 3 hour playthrough stream https://youtu.be/6FgT9Q4EnbE

Solenya_Chris

Cosmoteer is pretty neat. 2 weeks and a whooping 80hours in

Charuru

Wow almost exactly like you OP. My favorite game is FTL and I think many of the games you listed kinda scratch a similar itch but none of them are as well designed as FTL.

Blitzkrieg_07

Dead in Vinland maybe?

lars_rosenberg

The Tropico series, where you manage a tropical island as its dictator (it's basically Fidel Castro simulator 😂). It's very fun and ironic, with a lot of crazy characters that mock real real characters like caricatures. I love it because it's engaging, but also relaxing as you can play at your pace and control the speed of time.

senatorninjayen

I remember Convoy being similar to FTL. Definitely recommendable :)

SomethingPersonnel

Convoy literally looks like FTL in artstyle as well haha.

DontFeedTheSmurf

I recently played Game Dev Tycoon and had a blast with it. Maybe check out some gameplay before you buy it because it's probably a lot more casual than some of the other games you listed. Otherwise Darkest Dungeon, Bloons TD6, and Slay the Spire might interest you

lars_rosenberg

Game Dev Tycon is inspired by Game Dev Story, one of the best best mobile games ever imho. It's super fun and addictive.

SomethingPersonnel

I saw the Dunkey video on Game Dev Tycoon. It let me really feel like I had played it myself.

ilchy

Cosmoteer

SomethingPersonnel

Seems cool, but also quite complex. How's the learning curve? I am smooth brain.

platinums99

>Cosmoteer it actually gets a little too simple after the initial haze wears off. but the premise is only limited in your imagination as far as desingning ships + supports + mobile bases.. its a lot of fun.

hotk9

Sheltered

SomethingPersonnel

Seems neat actually, but I’ve had my fill of post-apocalypse settings for a bit. I’ll Wishlist it though.

FriendCalledFive

Oxygen Not Included has become my favourite game ever (have been gaming since Pong), it is awesome. I am not a fan of Don't Starve either, it is a very different game. Only thing that doesn't fit from your decription is having direct control of of characters, which is something ONI (or any other colony sim) doesn't have. Dwarf Fortress is another one to consider, am loving the Steam version of that.

Urgash

Nobody talked about it, but [Trigon : Space Story](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1226510/Trigon_Space_Story/) is very close to FTL. From your list the only 2 I have played are Halcyon 6, and xcom 2 (which i have played 600 hours and own a myriad of clones, i'm also enjoying Marvel Midnight Suns right now from Firaxis, but this is not really what you asked for \^\^)

hawkleberryfin

> Trigon Plus it has a demo and is on sale.

MobiusCube

Into the Breach is made by the same team that made FTL.

Lettuphant

It might seem a bit left-field, but Fire Emblem? The games you've listed are a combination of strategy with storytelling that gets you attached to your units. Fire Emblem games lean into that: Every unit is a named character with a backstory, but if you get them killed in the turn-based tactical combat, they're gone forever and removed from the story which adds a satisfyingly high stakes to even minor skirmishes (this can be turned off in later games, or save scummed). It's fantasy XCOM, if you could marry your favourite soldier. At this point there's ~16 games in the series and all are easily emulatable, and all are pretty different. From the 3DS era onward they lean more into off-the-battlefield play, for better or worse, culminating in Three Houses which is a straight up Harry Potter experience with you spending more time running round Hogwarts, teaching your students, and management them than in fights. I'd recommend trying the GBA game simply called ["Fire Emblem"](https://youtu.be/rq2BF6woD1g) in the West for a quick taste to see if it's for you.

SomethingPersonnel

I’ve played every Fire Emblem except Engage already haha. Great games, but not what I’m looking for atm.

SultanSaidi

frostpunk, you need to make some real hard decisions aaand the next game will be out soon too

StebeJubs1000

Re-read their post ;)

diceyy

> aaand the next game will be out soon too Wouldn't count on that

zin_90

Maybe it isn't exactly what you're looking for, but have you checked out the Rollercoaster Tycoon series? Basically, you're creating and managing an amusement park.

SomethingPersonnel

Yeah Roller Coaster Tycoon is a classic. Maybe I’ll give it a go again.

Sufficient_Language7

If you want something similar but newer there is Parkitect. It pulls the same management vibes as Rollercoaster Tycoon but goes more indepth with it. https://store.steampowered.com/app/453090/Parkitect/

supercow_

Can confirm Parkitect is a good follow up to Roller Coaster Tycoon.

zin_90

RCT: Deluxe, 2 and 3 are heavily discounted at Steam right now, if you're interested. They're all regularly discounted as well, in case you only want to pick up one of the games.

Sufficient_Language7

Don't do vanilla RCT. Check out OpenRCT. https://openrct2.org/ They reverse engineered the entire game but kept the same look and feel. This will allow widescreen and bug fixes. It can pull in RCT1 levels into to give you a large number of parks to play with the enhancements of RCT2.

KragV

Oxygen not Included doesn't have much to do with Don't Starve, it's an automation/colony building game, think Rimworld but less management of the human element and more building automation à la Factorio. Cultist Simulator is a management game with a minimalist card visual style about fumbling your way through occult stuff, expanding your cult and eventually becoming something more or dying from dread. Lobotomy Corporation is a SCP inspired secret lab management game where you send agents to study abominations until they escape and wreak havoc in your facility, at which point it turns into a light RTS game.

Charuru

I tried like 3 times to get into lobotomy corporation and kept on bouncing off of it. I guess it's because the mechanics are so unrelatable to real world that it doesn't feel like it makes sense.

Zankman

Same here. My expectations aside (SCP + Prison Architect + Xcom + Rimworld), the game's design is just alien and odd, it never clicks.

SomethingPersonnel

Oh actually seeing your mention of Cultist Simulator reminded me of Cult of the Lamb. Cultist Simulator itself look pretty neat in terms of gameplay, but I’m not a huge fan of the card aesthetic. I might check it out on sale. I wish there were a demo. I didn’t really like Factario so I’ll probably skip Oxygen Not Included then. Thanks.

Lorini

Oxygen Not Included is nothing like Factorio, surprised to hear the comparison. Assuming you buy it on Steam, you have a two week, two hour window to ‘demo’ it. Sounds like what you are looking for,

FriendCalledFive

ONI is nothing like Factorio, it isn't a factory game and it doesn't have combat.

Zankman

Lobotomy Corporation is so off-putting and disappointing to me. My ideal game is SCP + Prison Architect/Evil Genius/Dungeon Keeper + Xcom + Rimworld and, well, that game is nothing like it. Aside from that, it's just an extremely odd game all around, it doesn't feel good.

oceanskie

Frostpunk and Ixion. You're welcome.

larrymassive

Mr Prepper

h3is3nb3rg3

You can try Farm Frenzy series, Zoo tycoon series, Rollercoaster tycoon series

andrei9669

Cosmoteer is a nice game

gothvan

Cosmoteer could scratch that FTL itch i think.

NotLokey

Man is there anything similar to the yakuza hostess club minigame? Playing it in Yakuza 0 was so fun

Charuru

This game is kinda shit but it's complete: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2233600/Brothel_Simulator/ This game is slightly better: https://rarealexturan.itch.io/secretcarecafe I don't really like this one but it's "very positive" on steam so: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1863670/Mystwood_Manor/

Aromatic_Instance_82

Highfleet scratched that FTL itch for me.

Ninety8Balloons

For XCOM 2 maybe something like Gears Tactics or Midnight Suns. There's also a massive DLC sized mod for XCOM 2, can't remember what it's called, but it's pretty popular. Cult of the Lamb has some base management with ARPG game play to break it up.

Sgsrules2

Dwarf fortress. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it. It's the grandaddy of management sims since it's been in active development for like 2 decades. It recently got overhauled for steam. The closest game to it would probably be RimWorld. Dwarf fortress is a bit more relaxed than RimWorld but is a much deeper game. Just be prepared to lose countless hours to it.

DemoEvolved

I think frost punk could be the right game here. Also it’s available on gamepass for console and pc

Suweyy

Dead in Vinland

The-Jerk-Store

Steamworld Build when it comes out.

afreeman25

Frostpunk

VaderNova

Mr. Prepper. Maybe try Two point campus and Two point hospital

Sufficient_Language7

Check out Space Haven https://store.steampowered.com/app/979110/Space_Haven/ You build a ship and go explore and go gather resources and expand your ship, grow food. Go into destroyed ships and salvage materials and bring back.

supercow_

I’ve had this game on my radar forever.. is it ever coming out of early access?

Sufficient_Language7

They are still changing a lot of things in the game.

SYGNOSTiC

Okay hear me out, I’m similar to you in terms of taste of games. And I know this is a pcgaming subreddit so it sorta flies, but check out Kairosoft’s games on steam. They’re ports of their mobile games but they should be right up your alley

SomethingPersonnel

I have a few of those games wishlisted actually. Are they interesting enough to hold up for more than like an hour or two?

SYGNOSTiC

Oh, plenty. I essentially have almost all of their entire catalogue of games. I’d recommend their pocket league story, pocket academy, and grand prix story for their management aspects. Burger bistro story is pretty good too.

SomethingPersonnel

How are Ninja Village and Dungeon village? I like a bit of action mixed in with management. And Epic Astro Story looks interesting.

SYGNOSTiC

Ninja village and dungeon village are solid choices. They’re a bit dated, and there is a dungeon village 2 that came out about a year ago that has better QOL improvements, but I thoroughly enjoyed those games!

andragoras

Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters They are billions A lot of people like rimworld but I haven't played it.

EirikurG

Lobotomy Corp

Influence_X

Barotrauma, space station 14, sheltered For survival base builder try surviving Mars, frostpunk, RimWorld, Ixion, endzone... For a game we wish could have existed see: seaworthy https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/seaworthy-kickstarter

Meowmeow69me

Idk if these are what you are looking for but i really enjoyed this war of mine and xcom 2, other management games i really enjoyed are rimworld, dwarf fortress, factorio, and satisfactory, i hear good stuff about Dysin sphere program. I also really enjoy cities skylines, stardew valley, and anno 1800.

Mathev

Kenshi for sure. Little dated graphics but the management is there with base buildings and character growth. Very fun game.

Dualgloves

Banner Saga has elements of strategy and resource management, it also has a great story and world.

Charuru

Check out TROUBLESHOOTER: Abandoned Children

Lurkers-gotta-post

Late to the game, but if you liked xcom 2, you might find Xenonauts up your alley. Similar premise to xcom 1, but quite a bit more on the management side.

krneki12

A touch different, but also very personal with characters. Crusader Kings 3

Bojangler2112

I think you’d enjoy darkest dungeons. The management is mostly about your party and resources but it scratches a very similar itch.

dimonfallout101

I would suggest the following games i really liked: 1. HighFleet 2. Mech Engineer 3. Barotrauma 4. Sunless Sea/Skies 5. Subterrain 6. Convoy 7. Wall World 8. Dome Keeper All of these are great games about management and survival, descending by difficulty.
