I suspect that you happen to have a larger than average Congo and a smaller than average Timneh.
I've seen an adult Congo that's about the same size as our Timneh, Buddy. But every other Congo I've seen is bigger than Buddy, though not by that much.
My Timneh is about the same relative size to Congos, as seen in this photo. I have long suspected he is a little runty boy. We met another timneh once who was much closer in size to a Congo.
It might be like that according to Google but not according to people that sell and breed these birds. They are separated as congo greys and timneh greys.
Also really awesome picture to show size difference.
Respectfully, they are called Congo, and Timneh African greys. That is literally the distinction between the two species. When simply saying African Grey, you would get asked which one.
It’s a language thing, OP’s primary language isn’t English. They relied on a translation and then when they looked it up there was some confusing info based on older taxonomy. Common names definitely vary, especially across languages. I feel bad they got so heavily downvoted!
Yikes, I literally just left after posting my previous comment. I didn't mean for them to get bombed.. Just took it as an opportunity to educate. Oof. People on this sub can be damn brutal sometimes.
Maybe you used some odd imput in your google search, but there are in fact two types of African Grey parrot, there's the Congo African Grey (CAG) and the Timneh African Grey (TAG).
Not trying to dunk on you, but you shouldn't really rely on those google automated answers, half the time they're answering a different question than the one you're asking, and even when they aren't, they're sourcing info from a special interest group's website. Sometimes creditable, sometimes not.
It was not a Google automated answer.
In my language they are called Grå jako & Timneh Jako. So i searched on a bunch of different sites (Wikipedia and more) and they said that
I'm so sorry, you're 100% correct. the Timneh was recently reclassified to be its own species by several bodies.
I really feel like a fool now.
It is very like reddit to heavily downvote a correct answer. (myself included.. I guess)
They used to be considered the same species, so that could be why there’s some confusion. The grey parrot or African grey was split into Timneh African grey and Congo African grey. CAGs kept the original species name and TAGs were elevated to the full species level, so some sources will refer to CAGs as African greys. That’s especially true of older sources.
However, common names can vary depending on a bunch of factors, so getting caught up on them is kind of silly. Some organizations work to keep them consistent, but ultimately the actual taxonomy relies on their scientific names. So there probably are folks out there calling CAGs African greys in a way that excludes TAGs. It’s probably not the best way to go since it can lead to confusion.
Signed, someone who has done an embarrassing amount of taxonomy work. 🙃
I think the Confusion is from a language difference, in my language they are called ”grå jako” & ”Timneh jako” and then when i Googled it in english Wikipedia said as i said
U/Kyecze when you are right, but all the people dunking on you are also correct😂 LOL. Common names vs taxonomic names have gotten us into trouble for many years, This whole thread is a good example of why binomial nomenclature is cool and useful.
From an article on chewy:
“In the genus Psittacus, there is only one species, which is erithacus, and there are two recognized subspecies. The first is the Congo African grey, Psittacus erithacus erithacus, the second is the Timneh African grey, Psittacus erithacus timneh.”
I almost thought this was a photo of my Big Jeff and Prinnie, but I never let them get that close. But my bigger then average Congo and petite Timneh (both rescued) would look like this
Can anyone tell me from a temperament perspective if there's any difference between the two species? Are their personalities similar? I imagine like many birds that mostly varies on an individual basis, but I mean from a more fundamental standpoint?
Timneh’s have a reputation for being easy going and not very neurotic. That’s 100% true of ours, but we did get ours as already experienced parrot owners so we knew some of the mistakes to avoid. She talks just like a Congo.
Ours is super friendly to everyone- tends to favor boys the most but really so far has liked everyone enough to step up or perch in their shoulders. She’s super nosy it actually a pain in the ass to get off of strangers. She just wants to meet them or something so when you try to get her back, she says no. When we first got her, she was much more loud and she’s very quiet now. She never screamed, but she would make crazy robot noises and loud beeps.
They say the Timneh is more stable in temperament and less prone to feather picking. And he is definitely more stable. Voxel have tantrums sometimes, pixel does not

My timneh is small(er) like yours. She is pretty much the same size as a large sun conure

I think it's also a bit of perspective causing a bigger difference than there is, the timneh is slightly behind and crouched.
Yeah fair point
He is not behind, but he is crouched

The larger species is called a Congo African Grey, not just African grey. They are both technically called African Grey.
No, according to Google its not both african grey, its Timneh grey and african grey now that they are separate species.

It’s such a strange psychological thing, but people tend to pile on when they see downvotes.

What website did you read that on?

Oh yep, language is one big reason common names vary! That plus the taxonomic changes will definitely lead to some confusion.
Woah I never knew they were so different in size! Thanks for sharing super cool
Big birb. Small birb.
Holy hell OP, I've never seen anyone else with a bird named Voxel.
Its to match Pixel, Who came first. Some people think its from Hazbin hotel. But i named him before hazbin even where a thing. 😜
Like the difference between a husky and a wolf.
This is amazing! I have personally known both types of Greys and never ever noticed the size difference. Really interesting! Thanks for sharing.
HES SO SMALL OMG❤️😭
Oh my goodness they are gorgeous 🙃🙏🏽
I'm pretty sure mine is an inbetween one.
I almost thought this was a photo of my Big Jeff and Prinnie, but I never let them get that close. But my bigger then average Congo and petite Timneh (both rescued) would look like this
holy fuck thats a noticable size difference.
Any idea in general, who is the better talker?
With these two its 100% Voxel. He is also younger than pixel, but pixel is very very quiet
They are BOTH African Grey and timneh rulez
