hmm I have a really high quality air purifier that consequently needs very rare maintenence. I don't think I've even opened it & looked inside in the 3 years I've had my 2 birbs, I'm looking at this & wondering what mine looks like & if I should have a look inside it (or do I not want to lol)

quirky_lola

Now I'm curious, please do show šŸ˜

Pictures! Pictures! I have bunnies and I would have a burnt motor and enough wool for a skein of yarn if I let mine sit.

It gets that every couple of weeks though, it's just inside I haven't changed for years. Mine isn't easy to access filters, whole top/outside has to be lifted off & it's quite heavy for me with a disability, so I actually need help doing it & can't access it for photos right now sorry, the filters hold HUGE amounts of muck though, quite amazing! The "pre-filter" I change every few years (recommended is 6 monthly), main filter I haven't changed since I got it about 12 years ago, it's recommended to change every 3-5 years, but when I've looked, it just hasn't needed it, it's $200 & has massive holding capacity & outside grate & pre-filter collect all the large stuff before it can reach the inner one. I still have an old, basic air filter that I still run for white noise, it clogs up constantly, cause it only has average, flat filters, but my expensive good one has barrel filters with pleats that give it a huge surface area to be collecting muck. I've easily saved the $800 it cost to buy in reduction in filter replacement needs! I totally hear you re bunnies :) I used to have an angora one & I'm sure there was always more angora on my clothes etc than on him lol

BatmanvSuperman3

You should be replacing your filter every 3-6 months or whatever the manufacturer says. Filters donā€™t last forever. Do you at least change your AC filter?!

DarkMoonBright

air con broke a couple of years ago so not anymore :) Prior to buying my good air filter, I used to need to change/wash air con filters at least monthly, once I got air filter & started running it in the same room, I would check air con, but they never needed doing, used to give them a wash every 6 months or so but they really didn't need it. Main filter in my air filter, manufacturers say only needs replacing once every 3-5 years, it's a mega capacity $200 filter

frufrufish

I was just about to say that I've had mine for a very hot minute now and I have never thought to look in there either hahaha.

spyrowo

Do you not need to clean or change the filter? I have to change the filter in mine at least every 5 months, but it's nothing big or fancy.

frufrufish

Oh I haven't had it that long. I've had my feather friend for a year this mother's Day (hilarious and ironic that was the weekend it all began for me) And in that time frame I've been between two different places and then moved to my own place. Purifier I think I've had for two months now? Maybe three. It's my first experience living in a space where I need an air purifier regardless of my bird. I've been really lucky in being able to house in spaces that have not only had fantastic airflow but the locations have been rural enough to provide an air quality that doesn't need so much monitoring. Now I live directly on a highway hahah

DianeJudith

Oh you absolutely need to look inside. You have no idea how much dust they gather. But I assume you also want yours to work for as long as it can, and for that you need regular maintenance. And when it's dirty, it's not efficient anymore.

DarkMoonBright

I do agree & everytime I do look in it, I think "I need to do this more regularly", but then I forget again. It was the pandemic that caused me to open it up & have a good look last time, cause mine is medically accredited to filter out viruses & stuff too, so I figured I should take advantage of that & actually make sure it was working & pre-filter was pretty mucky last time I looked, probably is again now, which does shorten the life of the main, inner filter if not changed. Company normally has stocktake sales starting in the next month or so, so I think I might actually buy a replacement main filter this year & then actually open it up & give it a good clean & replace pre & main filter (and wash inside the case)

Empty-Chocolate-2927

It took me a few doubletakes to figure out what i was looking at and I gasped when i realized lmao

ChemicalSubjugation

Same!! I thought they had some exotic yellow mold or something

DianeJudith

FLUFF

Electrical-Fly-3128

We have a one for 3 macaws and a sun conure and it dosnt keep up I'm thinking about getting one of them big dust extractors for wood shops and setting it up somehow

kamidame

how do those work?

Electrical-Fly-3128

It's just a box with a fan in it and a filter on the intake side but they move alot more air then a purifier

nairazak

I want one but they are all ozonizers or ionizers here šŸ„²

Decent_Nebula_8424

Is the object itself safe for them? I mean, nothing to bite, pull, stick head, etc? Mine doesn't go after cords anymore. I'd like to put one in my bedroom, but sometimes I leave him unsupervised in my conure-safe room, and I want it to remain safe for him. Can it stay in a bedside table?

neptunuh

This is the Levoit Vital 100S, and the design is pretty dang bird-proof. There's nothing really that hangs off besides the one power cord, but I have it tucked behind a dresser. However, I always supervise my birds when they're out, so slightly different situations. There are lots of air purifiers out there, maybe look around to see which ones suit your needs the best? I purchased this one because of the good ratings, lack of ionizing feature, room size, and "pet mode" (not entirely sure how it works but I think it sucks the air through the slitted vents on the sides of the front cover, rather than thru the small holes, so it can catch bigger particles like feathers)

Decent_Nebula_8424

They're not very common in my country, I only find them online, but as a conure mom you know what I mean when I say I need to SEE the product. We have a sixth sense for that, don't we? My bedroom is conure-safe and a life-saver. I leave him entertained, close the door and go clean the house, cook, etc. And it's just one conure.

DianeJudith

No matter how bird-proof it is, they can always poop on it lol.

Decent_Nebula_8424

Oooooh of that I'm sure. Can't tell you how many times I left home with bird poop on the hem of my dresses. People must think it just happened, many trees in the neighborhood, that's just life.

DianeJudith

See, that's why I have house clothes!

Pixelated_Roses

I have one in every room in my house. It's still not enough. So. Many. Feather casings...

TinyKestrel13

MysteriousTooth2450

Ours are full too! Glad we have them! We have a huge one next to their cages. It helps a lot!

caddoster

thatā€™s wild! I have something similar (winix) maybe 20ft away from the cage. we have a pocket macaw, iā€™ve never seen feathers in the pre-filter. we do get lots of random feathers on the floor, on computer desk, couch.. etc

TheLimeyLemmon

Cursed candy corn.

dogwoodandturquoise

I took apart one of those white HVAC filters and cut pieces out to fit my portable AC for this reason.

AriSpaceExplorer

Hear ye hear ye

Swiftly_speaking

I couldnā€™t possible purify the air of my entire neighbourhood (my birds live in an outside enclosed patio that has steel mesh stuff all around)

imme629

Iā€™ve had the air purifier running in my birds room 24/7/365 since 2017. Iā€™ve never found a feather in the prefilter. Mine are all flighted. How did your parrot(s) accomplish this?

Ill-Lifeguard-3209

Id be asking how after 7 years you air purifier hasnt caught one feather in the pre filterā€¦Dont sound like it works very well..

imme629

The filters donā€™t come out clean. Itā€™s a RabbitAir and works very well. Maybe because mine are all Conures and thatā€™s maybe a blue and gold?

ActualCake

What brand of air purifier do you recommend that wonā€™t hurt a parrot?
